- Godwhacker, on 10/19/2009, -18/+383When you leave out the stupid people, 100% of Americans support legalization.
- brickwall99, on 10/19/2009, -15/+284"Support for legalizing marijuana hits new high".
Get it? - govtdoesnotwork, on 10/19/2009, -17/+159Wanna quit losing, Republicans? Get a clue from that 'crazy' Texas doctor who's been right about this issue for decades. You talk about small government, but then you support this Nixonian, failed-history-class policy, and then you wonder why there's no respect/excitement for your ossified political party? Get real. The picture should tell you that this trend is not your friend.
The proper policy response, which hasn't been tried, is tail between the legs retreat, at least when it comes to weed. Want it to be less fun for the hippies? Wanna destroy drugs as effectively as any government ever could (which means "not very" in reality). Tax that ***** like they tax cigars. It's one of the only ways you will be able to credibly attack President Obama "from the left;" and yes, a sensible cannabis policy would bleed off some very active Democrats, who are very effective at getting out votes. - darkz77, on 10/20/2009, -2/+130Alcohol is legal. Marijuana should be legal
- BrokenSpectrum, on 10/19/2009, -9/+126I wouldn't just point a finger at the Republicans when the Democrats are just as much to blame.
- Jookly, on 10/20/2009, -0/+80Prostitution should be legal.
- HeyyyJoe, on 10/19/2009, -3/+57"Support for legalizing marijuana is growing."
Get it? - BoneStamp, on 10/20/2009, -1/+49I don't think it's cannabis related. Weed is practically legal to smoke in Canada and their general level of education is much higher than ours and high school drop out rates are much lower. Lots of US companies have moved their call centers there because they can actually hire intelligent people for minimum wage.
- TritonX, on 10/20/2009, -2/+47It's funny that we still don't have any rational explanation for why it is illegal in the first place. Sigh
- daPhoenix, on 10/20/2009, -12/+57LSD should be legal. Cocaine should be legal.
- RealmDown, on 10/20/2009, -15/+54No, 56% of the nation disagrees. When disagreement = dumb, then you are on the wrong road.
Americans need, really need, to stop putting themselves down. It only encourages others to do so more. - jammyfred, on 10/20/2009, -0/+38I still don't get why the government or the rest of populous should get to decide what an adult eats, drinks, swallows or inhales.
In unrelated news, Only 42% of Americans like star wars, so no one should be allowed to watch it until a majority is reached. - EndAntiSemitism, on 10/19/2009, -3/+40One only has to look at the age demographics to see that it will probably happen within the next generation. Starting with California and working eastwards...
- funkedup, on 10/19/2009, -5/+40I think we will see a couple of state's using nullification and declaring the federal governments tyranny on this issue as unconstitutional. CA or MA will likely lead the charge, but some other state might legalize it first. Who knows? Sadly, marijuana will become legal so the scum-bags in Washington (and what ever state legalizes it first) can tax the death out of it, and not because of the freedom thing.
- jbnumba1, on 10/20/2009, -0/+34While daPhoenix is being sarcastic, the statements made are correct. All drugs should be legal. The effects on health are irrelevant to the fact that in a free society, adults should be able to put whatever they want in their bodies. The governments job is not to regulate morality or even public health. If I want to eat nothing but fried, processed foods, I'm free to do so.
By the way, daPhoenix, you may be curious to see where doctors place LSD and marijuana on a drug harm assessment. Compare LSD and marijuana with alcohol and tobacco.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rational_scale_t ... - vault, on 10/19/2009, -2/+35There's no way it won't be taxed if legalized. We tax tobacco and alcohol..
- Dundaman, on 10/20/2009, -1/+34I think you have to add ignorant to that list. A lot of smart people, who don't realize they know a lot of smokers, still think marijuana is additive etc.
- funkedup, on 10/19/2009, -10/+40Republicans and Democrats are both to blame here. The Republicans are idiots for not knowing their history on the subject, and the Democrats are idiots because they champion social freedom. The Republicans are for fiscal responsibility as much as the Democrats are for not going to war. Both are to blame...
Also, legalize it, but don't tax it! - Moralogic, on 10/20/2009, -1/+31Level of education went down because of 8 years of failed education program funding and planning. The failure of no child left behind is the main item that demonstrates that, but there are other factors too.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 10/20/2009, -0/+27That’s funny. Where I work they just instituted a new, ongoing random drug screening policy where if you fail a single urine test you are immediately fired. It’s not like we even operate heavy machinery or anything like that, I work in an office.
- sHockz, on 10/20/2009, -1/+27just wait until all the old people who are mentally scarred by 'reefer madness' die or leave office, things will change in due time.
- heliumflash, on 10/19/2009, -33/+5956% of the nation is dumb
- Lalaki, on 10/19/2009, -1/+24I'm not ashamed to say that if California decides to legalize it I'm taking a field trip to San Fransisco.
- hydrodev, on 10/20/2009, -0/+23The rational explanation....IS irrationality.
- pyrohotdog, on 10/20/2009, -1/+23Marijuana is not for everyone....but THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE, IS!
- gsm54321, on 10/20/2009, -3/+25An argument that started with name calling and then used a stereotype as supporting evidence.
God bless the internet. - cyberclown, on 10/20/2009, -3/+25WTF 54% oppose it !!!! I'm 57 years old and I grew up with pot, who's opposing it the 80 year olds and how many can there be? Where was this poll taken a senior home?
- govtdoesnotwork, on 10/19/2009, -7/+28A whine. Well that ought to stop it. /s
- heliumflash, on 10/20/2009, -3/+22So you'd rather that millions of people are fined/arrested each year and billions of tax-payer's dollars wasted than have your friends do weed (which they will do anyway)?
:-/ - FyreGoddess, on 10/20/2009, -3/+21How can you claim that it's "starting" with California? Last November Massachusetts decriminalized it - the first state to pass non-medicinal action. Seems to me that it "started" there more than anywhere else.
- DougChristian, on 10/20/2009, -4/+22How can you say you're not dumb? Your post proves it. You're here talking about how it can have bad effects on certain people. What the ***** does that have to do with anything? Should we ban motorcycles, candy bars, alcohol and adultery?
What you have is an argument to abstain and to teach your kids not to use. That's it. To think that gives you reason to take away the freedoms of strangers to make those choices for themselves makes you not only dumb but a fascist *****. - Alderon, on 10/20/2009, -2/+19omg - I just got a raging clue...
- jbnumba1, on 10/20/2009, -0/+17@Mossman85: Why do you get to make the decision that someone is not allowed to use coke? I personally don't, but I respect that if someone else wants to make that choice (in my opinion a bad one), then they should be free to make that decision. The negative side effects of the drug are punishment enough for the user. Besides, there have been countless studies that show that prohibition does nothing to lower usage. Prohibition does nothing but expand the police state, the prison industrial complex, and create a black market which fuels organized crime.
I would think it would be a pretty simple concept that what you do with your body and mind, provided that you aren't hurting others, is totally up to the owner of said body. - the2989, on 10/20/2009, -1/+17You don't know *****. Most people drive just fine when high. And no, they don't go 20mph under the speed limit, that's a myth that you were stupid enough to take as fact. Only old people with cataracts do that.
- darkz77, on 10/20/2009, -0/+16I think the idea is people should be able to make their own decisions. we have the right to smoke ourselves to death. we have the right to drink ourselves to death. we should be able to trip to death :).
- fallingdamage, on 10/20/2009, -2/+17speaking of which, I wish I could go back in time to my 6th grade class, find the D.A.R.E. teacher that used to come and brainwash us once a week, and punch him in the face.
- BoneStamp, on 10/20/2009, -0/+14I know lots of die hard republicans in California who fully support legalization. They have no intention of smoking it, but they know that everyone who wants to do it is already doing it and the state can benefit from that. I'd vote republican next election if they promised legalization.
- Mossman85, on 10/20/2009, -0/+14No, I don't. I must be high.
- govtdoesnotwork, on 10/19/2009, -2/+16It could happen even sooner if an Indian tribe has the requisite balls. (I hereby pledge to go there and support them with my wallet if such a tribe emerges, just like I bought hemp granolabars from Dr. Bronner a few days ago!)
- rocknog, on 10/20/2009, -0/+13I've never actually even tried pot. The reason I want it legal is because of the vast amount of money wasted on the drug war and the number of people in prison over it. I don't see why it's necessary for this to keep going on.
- ggfobster, on 10/20/2009, -0/+13Social injustice. Plus I enjoy it every now and then with friends, and don't want to be committing a crime.
- govtdoesnotwork, on 10/19/2009, -5/+18I'd love it not to be taxed, but in the real world if we're going to get the one we're likely to get the other. I'm not going to fight that fight, because I think the REAL thing to concentrate on is spending, not taxes, if we ever want anything even resembling smaller government. Look at the history of how alcohol prohibition ended (Reason magazine is good on this, and highschool history books are universally *****)
- the2989, on 10/20/2009, -1/+13Magic mushrooms and LSD. And weed. Ecstasy, sure.
- NSResponder, on 10/20/2009, -1/+13Oh, come on. That guy probably believed what he was telling you. Educate him, don't condemn him.
-jcr - hacker52404, on 10/20/2009, -0/+12Some people see an injustice and want it corrected. Others have had their lives "ruined" or at least changed dramatically because they were arrested for smoking a joint in college and therefore lost all eligibility for federal financial aid.
- jsuther, on 10/20/2009, -1/+1356% still believe the lies told in the early the 1900's by racists and nylon manufactures with government connections.
- theviceroy, on 10/20/2009, -0/+12That kind of policy is useful for weeding out narcotics and amphetamine abusers who statistically suck ass at their jobs and cost companies a lot of money... but it also catches a lot of people who smoke a bowl after work to relax who probably are very productive and good for the company.
In short, its a dumb policy. - jsuther, on 10/20/2009, -0/+12I think that's what they thought in the 60s. More action is need than waiting.
- therightside, on 10/20/2009, -0/+12man i need to set up my grow room
