GOP's New Slogan Already Being Used To Market Anti-Depressan
huffingtonpost.com — Leave it to the tone deaf GOP to find a way of attaching themselves to this election cycle's "change" mandate that simultaneously reinforces the fact that their failed policies have messed up the world to such an inhuman extent that many Americans now live their daily lives in a state of free-floating panic and paralyzing anxiety.

- SheilaNoya, on 05/13/2008, -12/+109The GOP has a point.
You have to be under the influence of mind-altering drugs to even consider voting for a Republican now.- OffPiste, on 05/13/2008, -7/+5Maybe for President. In many places that are heavily Democrat or Republican the opposing party doesn't even run a candidate.
- weside, on 05/13/2008, -23/+10Actually, I've never drank, smoked, or done any drugs, and I'm a lifelong Republican. So your correlation fails ;)
- dtfinch, on 05/13/2008, -1/+17Weekly brainwashing sessions work too.
- cathl, on 05/13/2008, -2/+17That's great that you don't do any drugs, but the fact that you feel that no one else should be able to means you're just an idiot.
- tech42er, on 05/13/2008, -0/+11Originally, I was going to say how do you know he's not against the WoD. But then I checked his profile and saw that he's a authoritarian, elitist douche.
- weside, on 05/13/2008, -8/+4Thank you for the compliments!

- absurdist, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Hmmm.... mild brain damage? Oxygen deprivation at some point? Mom drank while you were young? A blow to the head, maybe?
- goomba323, on 05/13/2008, -1/+5You will also be a life-long virgin.
I don't really have a problem with people who don't drink, do drugs, or smoke (or are Republicans for that matter), but when people like you criticize other people for doing it, that's when I say "don't knock it til you try it" cause you're really missing out (not trying to tempt you, but if you've never drank socially, maybe you should...it's a grrrrrrrreeat time)- weside, on 05/13/2008, -5/+1lol yes, because if someone doesn't drink, smoke, or do drugs, they are condemned to lifelong virginity. /sarcasm
- richbleak, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4You are right; the sentence should have read "You have to be under the influence of mind-altering drugs or a complete ***** retard to even consider voting for a Republican now."
- sassip, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2One side-effect they forgot in your case, "depressed, or non-existent sense-of-humor."
- dhVyse, on 05/13/2008, -1/+8And MCCAIN as your only choice is sort of a no brainer. But then again we're talking about the same people who elected Bush Jr. Twice.
- rpgmaker, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6So they will legalize marijuana now?
- happyseamonster, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3They keep drugs illegal so they can make billions off them to fund illegal activities.
- Kingmichael, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3You're right. All the Democrats are "the good guys" and all the Republicans are "the bad guys."
- BishkekBuddy, on 05/13/2008, -6/+15Too funny!
- JimmyTheHeel, on 05/13/2008, -9/+42"Common side effects are very much in keeping with the world the House Republicans have striven to build: nausea, apathy, constipation, fatigue, vertigo, sexual dysfunction, sweating, memory loss, and - and I swear I am not making this up - "electric shock-like sensations also called 'brain zaps.'"
- smurfsahoy, on 05/13/2008, -14/+4Yes, you are making that up.
- dkbg, on 05/13/2008, -0/+11I have personally experienced that symptom, it's not fiction.
- bjornski, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6Me to. I was given Effexor for a while. Those "brain zaps" are real.
And they never fully went away when I switched medications. Oh well. *shrugs, left eye blinking twice* - emjaymj, on 05/13/2008, -0/+10As far as I know it's only a side effect of discontinuing the drug, not actually when you're taking it regularly. I've experienced it over a course of two days when I was young and stupid and took far too much MDMA. One of the most awful experiences of my life, I can't imagine dealing with it for months like some people report.
- yaddayaddayoda, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4I had them during the use of Effexor and during the withdrawal period. REALLY unpleasant.
- bjornski, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4I haven't been on it for over a year, and I still get waves of "zaps".
It sucks. It sucks real bad. - flashback99, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4And yet my doc still tells me theres no lasting damage. Big Pharma are ***** that play with real peoples lives.
- yaddayaddayoda, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3The zaps eventually went away. I really got sidelined by the restless leg syndrome during/after tapering down my dosage. Hang in there, it'll get better.
- emjaymj, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1@flashback99
Technically it's neither lasting nor really damage at all. It's an EXTREMELY unpleasant side effect to be sure, but it's in no way caused by "damage" to the brain and evidence suggests that the phenomenon is no more harmful than a side effect such as increased sweating. And to suggest that the zaps are anywhere near permanent is patently false.
"Big Pharma" is still very much guilty though, these drugs are over-prescribed to a disgusting degree. But anti-depressants have improved the quality of life for many people and have even saved many lives.
- smurfsahoy, on 05/18/2008, -0/+1Alright, fair enough. It's pretty messed up though that they don't list that on their website that I looked through.
- bjornski, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6Me to. I was given Effexor for a while. Those "brain zaps" are real.
- dkbg, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Err, side effect. Damn it.
- flashback99, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Seeing the poster just brought back bad memories for me. Effexor ***** me up. It's ok for 3-6 months, but then the shocks kick in , spasms, the weird dreams and other *****. Can't believe they're advertising this dangerous stuff like candy for adults.
And mj is still illegal.
- dkbg, on 05/13/2008, -0/+11I have personally experienced that symptom, it's not fiction.
- smurfsahoy, on 05/13/2008, -14/+4Yes, you are making that up.

- Defuser, on 05/13/2008, -13/+1Oh, well gee, that makes it TOTALLY clear. Because clearly, George W. Bush relied on his wife's money, and not the ten grillion oil dollars that his family bathes in every night. It couldn't possibly be that abby11 is just an idiot who can't spell and can't find the CAPS LOCK.

I'll pick up an internets sometime.
Now everyone acts like they get the reference, until your reply I saw I had like +4 in my profile page. Psshh.. digg.. "Of course I knew that, of course!"

- kakwakas, on 05/13/2008, -9/+6You vastly overestimate politicians. Just wait til Obama has been in office for a half a year or so and see how much you like him then.
- flashback99, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1You vastly underestimate Obama. On the other hand, we underestimated bush and he still did worse than our expectations.
- buckrogers1965, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6Jesus would run as a democrat.
- flashback99, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I'm sure there's a rule that says dead people can't be president. I'm just guessing. Anything's possible in America, right?

- Idiggapony, on 05/13/2008, -18/+9And leave it to the nasty, insensitive HuffPo crew, who regularly rejoice at the medical problems and death of anyone who disagrees with them, to coopt the suffering of people with anxiety and depression for their own incessant political whining.
HuffPo, is there one single tiny little problem in the whole entire world that isn't the Republicans' fault?- Defuser, on 05/13/2008, -4/+10While you're entirely correct about the disingenuous nature of the Huffington Post, the fact remains that the Republicans deserve the thrashing they're currently getting. They acted with extreme hubris, and now we're in a never-ending war with an economy that's crashing while gasoline is headed for five bucks a gallon. I used to be a Republican. Then I looked around me, and realized that I was surrounded by people who honestly believe that it's "good" to spend billions of dollars killing innocent Iraqis, but think it's "evil" to spend even five cents providing health care to children in our own country.
What good can be said about such people?

- Mattwdj, on 05/13/2008, -2/+7LOL we barley have any socialism right now. For the record i am against socialism and i am not a democrat. But we should support our school system and have heathcare. Not so much to help the poor or whatever but because it gives us an advantage and will help our economy grow. The smarter and healthier our population is the more productive we will be therefore everyone becomes richer. I am always down to become richer.
- WhiteRaven, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2"But we should support our school system and have heathcare."
Why? Because you say so?
And what makes you think the federal government *can* provide those things better than private enterprise leavened with charity?- Mattwdj, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1No not because i say so. But it is a theory in economics. The healthier and more educated the population is the more productive the population becomes therefore increasing GDP. I am not saying private schools don't work but not everyone one is the US is has enough money to send their kids to private school. Also no one sets up private schools that are free to go to. Furthermore, you are probably annoyed with all the poor people or annoying people on the streets in our cities that always want to fight or steal or do something. Well if had a better education system that supported them and improved there lives it would also improve our lives. Improving Education and Heathcare is not just helping the poor but improving the lives or every single American in different ways.
Dont think that i am for 100% free heathcare for everyone becuase i am not thats the stupidest idea ever. I am for a government program to get heathcare to people how cannot afford it.
I care about the economy and the best way to improve it is by improving our education and heath care system.

- WhiteRaven, on 05/13/2008, -2/+2"But we should support our school system and have heathcare."

Are we being a little melodramatic?- Cattywampus, on 05/13/2008, -3/+1That was one hell of a long sentence that they used to begin that article. Could have been two sentences, at least.

I'm X_Politician and I approve this message. - Mattwdj, on 05/13/2008, -2/+11I am not a democract or a republican, i am moderate i will voter for the better candidate. But it seems like the republican candidates have just become incompetent. Bush and now McCain they seem so out of touch and unfit to run a country. just my opinion.
- WhiteRaven, on 05/13/2008, -2/+3Your opinion would be more interesting to us if you would give an example.
- happyseamonster, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Are you smoking crack?
- WhiteRaven, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Are you avoiding the issue?
- Mattwdj, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1I didnt know i needed a example for Bush because its fairly obvious he did a horrible job. But for McCain, staying in iraq, his foreign policy is totally crazy, his un willingness to help out people who's homes have been foreclosed on, and his little to no knowledge about the economy is prolly the worst considering our economy is the most important thing.(to me atleast).

The biggest drag on today's economy is all the baseless negative talk. The biggest weakness of America's foreign policy is the extent to which it is sabotaged by contrarian talk meant to shape public opinion.- Nanite, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3America's foreign policy isn't being "sabotaged by contrarian talk", it is being sabotaged by the very people in charge right now. All of the negative rhetoric that surrounds the Bush administration isn't baseless, far from it. In fact this administration has shown itself to be incompetent in just about every facet of policy making; education, defense, economics, the environment, energy policy, etc. It all adds up to mismanagement on a grand scale, and which is more than deserving of ridicule and "contrarian talk."
Think, don't dismiss all criticism of Bush just because you don't understand the situation. We are in the mess we are in now BECAUSE of the fact that people in positions of oversight haven't been criticizing Bush ENOUGH.- WhiteRaven, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Why is it that you made this post and took the time to list *aspects* of policy that you think are lacking but you neglected to offer a single example of exactly what is lacking. Saying that they are incompetent without offering an example of incompetence is exactly what I am talking about. Does it really make sense to you to tell me that it's "not baseless" without bothering to offer basis? How hard can it be to come up with two sentences giving an example of what you are talking about?
Let me remind you of something. The real world is not a tidy place. There aren't many rules that can be counted on to hold true. THERE ARE NO RIGHT ANSWERS. I think it's despicable to criticize those making the hard decisions without offering some kind of credible alternative.
You know, one thing about Obama that pisses me off is the way he claims that when he is president, his foreign policy will be different because he will be willing to "talk to" other countries. What a ***** ass. To imply that we do not already pursue peaceful diplomacy to it's fullest extent is both dishonest and destructive. People are actually believing this crap and it hurts exactly those efforts we are making that he pretends don't exist!
The Bush administration is criticized for always making a point of keeping military options "on the table". Well, there's two things to remember about this. First, you don't *ever* give up an option. Surrendering bargaining points is not enlightened or wise, it is just foolish. Secondly... did you notice that there is in fact a *table*? We have been negotiating with Iran (for example) constantly. We are *always* talking. People who refuse to acknowledge the diplomatic work being done under the Bush administration are doing a disservice to the entire world. Or perhaps they are so ***** stupid, they assume that simply making an effort guarantees a peaceful and satisfactory solution.

- Barackalypse, on 05/13/2008, -6/+2The rhetoric in this summary is ***** insane, even for a Huffpo article.
"failed policies have messed up the world to such an inhuman extent"
Say what?! Aside from our own country, Iraq, and Afghanistan, what policies of ours have really done harm on an inhuman scale to the rest of the world? Aside from the Iraq war, the greatest human suffering is probably the genocide in Darfur, which has nothing at all to do with our policies (hell, even the UN Rights Mission blamed the Sudanese government for it)
"many Americans now live their daily lives in a state of free-floating panic and paralyzing anxiety."
This is the first I'm hearing of it, if things were that bad I'd be seeing bodies jumping into the river and we'd be seeing a massive spike in the suicide rates. Buried for sensationalist propaganda.- sassip, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1"Aside from our own country, Iraq, and Afghanistan, what policies of ours have really done harm on an inhuman scale to the rest of the world?"

- sassip, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1"Aside from our own country, Iraq, and Afghanistan, what policies of ours have really done harm on an inhuman scale to the rest of the world?"
- woobyluv, on 05/13/2008, -6/+2There sure is alot of hate in these reactions, perhaps some of you people should stop and consider what the real options are...
1) Obama - A person who doesn't have the moral fortitude to recognize when his pastor of 20 years spouts hate speech, whose church sells openly racist and hateful literature on its website, refuses to distance himself from an unrepentant terrorist, has a wife who has made public statements that strongly indicate that she hates America, and to top it all, his comments and demeanor indicate his elitist position. All these combined really tell us:
a) he isn't paying enough attention to who he associates with and his judgment is sorely lacking making him unfit to be President.
or b) he really believes the garbage these controversial associates believe and he is unfit to be President...Only the self-delusional would ever consider voting for this guy.
2) Clinton - Not much better; Bill keeps sabotaging her campaign as if it were on purpose. She gets caught in a bold faced lie, aka "Sniper-Gate" which even though politicians lie, this is such a blatant falsehood, you have to be completely self-delusional to ever consider trusting her for anything other than to do what is best for Clinton.
Then you have 3) McCain - Clearly not the best the GOP could muster but, sadly, is likely the most electable of the candidates. His maverick attitude and recent flip-flops bring into question his trustworthiness now as well.
All in all, there is NOT A SINGLE candidate that I would want in the White House for any length of time.- jhelmer, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1I can't think of another post on digg that so accurately echoed my own opinion. Our choices range from absolutely fricken' dreadful (Obama) to very bad (McCain). Even the likely libertarian candidate (Barr) is horrible. I want a do-over. Let's just restart this whole election cycle.
- woobyluv, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0It's just too bad nearly everyone is blissfully drinking their Kool-Aid and not stopping to really examine every candidate :(
- Cattywampus, on 05/13/2008, -3/+1Did any of those geniuses at HuffPo check to make sure that Obama's "Change you can believe in" isn't being used as an advertising slogan?
As anybody who followed the 2004 campaign probably knows, "Yes we can," which Obama has also been using, was Howard Dean's slogan when he ran for president that year.
Personally, I like the slogan on that Effexor ad as a political theme: "Reality: You have options."- bill1237, on 05/13/2008, -1/+0I believe it was Lenin who first used "change you can believe in" when he was setting up the communist state of the Soviet Union. Like with Obama, little did the people know what it really meant.
- x0epyon0x, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1Am I the only one who felt like this article was written by the staff of Cracked.com?
- bill1237, on 05/13/2008, -3/+1Democrats, raise taxes, fund socialism and gun control. It's all they know, it's all they ever have known.
I wonder when Pelosi is going to get around to decreasing the gas price as she promised before the election? Oh that's right, the say anything do anything to get elected Democrats never intended to do anything about gas prices. Sorry. They are now busy on global warming -- The plan, raise taxes and pretend that government can control the climate. How cool is that? That way you can feel good about paying through the nose for protecting the caribou and the polar bear and the ... anything else the wacko environmentalist can come up with.
People are so easily fooled.- woobyluv, on 05/14/2008, -0/+0Though I agree with this sentiment, lets face facts. The Republicans are little better anymore. Those on Capitol Hill have lost their way. By and large they keep failing those that elected them. Of course, there are still several Representatives/Senators that continue to make their case, but it mostly falls on deaf ears or any deals come with a lofty price tag in the form of unacceptable compromise.
- tmyeager, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I am assuming that after the last 8 years, it's quite possible that many of the GOP is taking Effexor XR and the slogan was so effective it rubbed off.
- happyseamonster, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1That's *****' beautiful.
- robthom, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1"...free-floating panic and paralyzing anxiety."
If they could find a way to concentrate that it would be a weapon against "our" enemies. - kiley481, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I half-expected Effexor to be an anal suppository ...
- socketman, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2I am by no means perfect, but I can't respect when people post articles with glaring misspellings in the title.
WTF is "depressan" ?
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/depressan
I guess that just helps prove the point that you have to be retarded to vote for a democrat.
Seeing how much support Obama is getting on the internet, I think I am going to need some depressan meadasine. Hopfully not four the next for years, that would get exspensive.- AngryChris, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Or that perhaps the URL can only be up to a fixed number of characters and the last 2 didn't fit in the buffer. But perhaps you have to be retarded to not be able to think about such things.
- chase001, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Makes sense - isn't that what most Republicans use to numb their minds and their consciences?
- oldcyborg, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Prozac(generic), works for me... I no longer freak out about things. I hear them, and I get it, but I just don't get too upset about things over which I have no control...... Bless you all!!!
