- shupy, on 04/27/2009, -27/+239Well well, on another thread the sore losers are slamming Janet for not being aggressive enough in combating this breakout.
It always comes back to the same old thing. Trying to blame the administration for the mess of the Republicans. Republicans=incompetence that keeps on giving. - freedomjoe, on 04/27/2009, -18/+175FTA:
Obey and other advocates for the spending argued, correctly, that a pandemic hitting in the midst of an economic downturn could turn a recession into something far worse -- with workers ordered to remain in their homes, workplaces shuttered to avoid the spread of disease, transportation systems grinding to a halt and demand for emergency services and public health interventions skyrocketing. Indeed, they suggested, pandemic preparation was essential to any responsible plan for renewing the U.S. economy.
Now, as the World Health Organization says a deadly swine flu outbreak that apparently began in Mexico but has spread to the United States has the potential to develop into a pandemic, Obey's attempt to secure the money seems eerily prescient.
And his partisan attacks on his efforts seem not just creepy, but dangerous.

Again, the Republicans can not govern. All they can do is shriek "no taxes for the rich!" Kick them all out. This is an outrage. - CptnEvilStomper, on 04/27/2009, -17/+165Can we please stop taking these people seriously now? How many more stunts like this do they have to pull before Americans realize they don't now, nor have they ever had our best interests in mind?
- ForumDriv, on 04/27/2009, -12/+114Fighting disease is more big government intruding in the lives of the average citizen. Sort of like giving water and medical care to victims of a massive flood or putting out forrest fires. First one wants fresh water, police protection, health care, or a blanket, then the whole damn country expects coddling by a national nanny. Give a man a vaccine and he'll be free from this particular world flu pandemic. Cut the man's taxes and he can afford to start a world class health research university, attend it, and learn how to vaccinate himself from every pandemic! This message brought to you by the Republican National Committee.
- scottknick, on 04/27/2009, -13/+110The Republicans are not a small enough minority yet. But don't worry; they're working as hard as they can to correct that.
- kmom5, on 04/27/2009, -13/+108Maybe someone should remind their republican senators of this about right now... Remind them that it's not always right to shoot an idea down because it didn't come from the right.
Now, as always, who's paying the price for their extreme partisanship? - digg4peace, on 04/27/2009, -19/+107The party of torture and tax breaks has little else to offer...I can't imagine what four more years of these jerks would have done to this nation...
I still give thanks everyday that Obama won the election... - niradg, on 04/27/2009, -17/+101Even with a Democratic President and Democratic majority in Congress, Republicans still find a way to ***** us over.
- meese, on 04/27/2009, -12/+79We don't have a Sec. of Health and Human Services because the GOP has been filibustering her nomination. And it's not like she's a controversial figure even among conservatives - she's the twice elected Gov. of Kansas, and has had well over 60% approval in her conservative state.
- charlie6969, on 04/27/2009, -8/+73The American People don't even really care about this crap. They just want the CORRUPTION to STOP and to be TREATED WITH A LITTLE RESPECT!!
I am a registered Democrat, but I have always voted according to my conscience and their voting record. I never really cared whether they were a Republican or Demcrat.
I still don't.
But, I am very disappointed in so many of the politicians, right now. It is sad.
I just want a few honest ones. It should not BE this hard to find a few honest politician! - Anomaly100, on 04/27/2009, -6/+53They just keep sinking lower and lower. Their wording says it all!! They try to instill fear wherever possible. They're self defeating, trying to take everyone down with them. They're dying out, thank goodness. I can't take much more of their rants!
- Joe_rigby, on 04/27/2009, -14/+55The "party of no" to the "party of no survivors"
- MixMastaKooz, on 04/27/2009, -4/+43I still fail to see why people vote for a party who believes that government doesn't work, and as we saw the last 8 years, these same people who vote for this party fail to see that this ideology is a self-fulfilling prophecy....
- Kinak, on 04/27/2009, -5/+41Yeah, who needs a Secretary of H&HS, it's not like we might be facing a housing crisis or a pandem... oh.
- Jordan117, on 04/27/2009, -4/+37"Wait, how did this happen when the Democrats control the House and Senate?"
That's what happens when you try to negotiate with Republicans. You offer concessions by cutting billions of dollars from the stimulus, and then get precisely zero Republican votes in return. I guess they'd only be happy if Dems passed bills as the GOP would write them... apparently they don't understand the meaning of the word "election".
"This is pretty funny, though. Who needs volcano monitoring and pandemic funds, right?"
If a significant GOP politician scoffs at the need for near-Earth object detection, I suggest taking your family to the nearest underground shelter immediately, with supplies to last at least six months. - jhbarr, on 04/27/2009, -1/+34I guess you forgot the Dems were trying to pass bipartisan legislation before the Repubs started whining about Nancy Pelosi's speech on the house floor.
- woodsjransom, on 04/27/2009, -16/+46As usual the rushpublicans don't have their pulse on the general public. This is one funny kind of flu outbreak. It's in California, Texas, Kansas, Ohio and New York about 20 cases but there may be 100 in New York. Usually its not that wide spread when it surfaces. It is striking young people, 1300 people in Mexico have it and 80 have died. Eat your vegetables, fruits and wash your hands often. Whatever you do don't listen to the rushpublicans.
- ironhide, on 04/27/2009, -6/+35I disagree, no reason to let people suffer due to the arrogance and stupidity of their elected officials.
- kingofinternet, on 04/27/2009, -13/+40Just let those ***** in Texas deal with the swine flu.
- sulthernao, on 04/27/2009, -1/+28Not if it got Filibustered in the Senate. Guess who was the one who made the changes in the Conference Committee? Yep, Susan Collins, one of the 3 Republicans whose support was necessary to get cloture in the Senate.
So basically it doesn't matter what House Democrats did, because the legislation needs to pass the Senate too, where Democrats don't have enough votes for cloture. - hawkspur, on 04/27/2009, -1/+27Apparently you don't know how our legislative process works at all. Perhaps a majority in the House could get bills passed with ease, but you need 60 Senators to stop a fillibuster. You can't just steamroll every peace of legislation through over the Minority.
- scottknick, on 04/27/2009, -4/+30LOL!
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -27/+53Republicans = *****.
- Aero347, on 04/27/2009, -6/+31"Dear Senator Collins,
Thank you for ensuring the 'pork' was removed from the stimulus bill.
Removing the $462 million for the Centers for Disease Control, and $900 million for pandemic flu preparations was a responsible move.
Unfortunately we are now setting into the Swine Flu pandemic, which will probably kill alot of your supporters.
Good luck getting re-elected." - lordmike, on 04/27/2009, -2/+25Very good! For awhile I wasn't sure if this was snark or a real post from one of Digg's right wingers... you certainly have their style down to a T!
- ProfessorSYM, on 04/27/2009, -2/+24They only want to be involved in government to the extent that they can dismantle it and usher in corporate fascism.
- lordmike, on 04/27/2009, -3/+24That's what republican blowhards count on... That people with good sense will bail them out, but they still get the credit for appealing to the mob....
- niradg, on 04/27/2009, -5/+26Because the Senate Democrats caved in to be "bepartisan" to get the support of "moderate" GOP Senators like Susan Collins.
- sulthernao, on 04/27/2009, -2/+23They may have majority, but they do not control the Senate. If they had60 votes and still can't deliver, I'll be right there with you.
Also note that the Democratic Coalition is very diverse, ranging from very liberal to downright conservative. - CaptOblivious, on 04/27/2009, -5/+26MrObjectional
Actually, yes it would. The money spent on being ready would give skilled scientists, doctors and lab techs work which would PAY THEM MONEY that they would then SPEND in the general economy.
In addition to making us ready for the eventual flu epidemic/pandemic.
you really should go look at what happened the last time there was a flu pandemic, millions and millions of people died
Could you be capable of any sort of thought that doesn't come from fox "news"? - DigitalisAkujin, on 04/27/2009, -12/+33It's gonna be hilarious watching the repubs self destruct again in 2010.
I can see the future now:
GOP leadership says "We must work hard to communicate our vision to the American people." When asked what that vision was they responded by advocating for cutting taxes. - hawkspur, on 04/27/2009, -6/+27I'm not a particular fan of Obama, but if you are going to bash anyone you need to actually know the facts. Almost immediately after he first took office, Obama ordered Guantanamo shut down and signed an executive order prohibiting further "harsh interrogation techniques".
Just because he isn't holding a war crimes tribunal for Bush (though he deserves one) over the torture, doesn't mean he's defending the practice. I'd like to criticize Obama on some of his decisions, but when the other people criticizing him are such dittohead morons, it makes me want to defend him instead; simply for the illogic of a great number of arguments. - asgardshill, on 04/27/2009, -12/+33's all right. Jesus will make you all better if you're a reliable Republican voter. So who needs vaccine?
- hawkspur, on 04/27/2009, -1/+21Protip: A simple majority isn't how the Senate works. You can't steamroll every piece of legislation over the other party. The opposition can filibuster and otherwise delay legislation a great deal.
- futurepastnow, on 04/27/2009, -11/+31Of course they did. That's what Republicans do. They say no to things.
- swazo, on 04/27/2009, -3/+23Well, if you get the swine flu, I hope you suffer and thank the G.O.P for not giving a *****.
- siszam, on 04/27/2009, -2/+20mrfoos, are you forgetting the Republican crises of imaginary WMD's that got us into two wars? How about the economic crises that Bush dumped on the country?
- ProfessorSYM, on 04/27/2009, -2/+20What's it like to be so stupid?
Seriously. And guess what, you aren't the only taxpayer so stop getting all outraged over the probably less than $5,000 in taxes you pay each year.
A lot of us pay a lot more, and guess what?
I would be glad for it to go to pandemic preparedness. - WorldLeader, on 04/27/2009, -5/+23The fight over Kathleen Sebelius's nomination has convinced me that the GOP is a bunch of raving lunatics. Why the hell do they think that Obama will bow to their wishes and nominate a pro-life candidate? Sebelius is as close as they are ever going to get, yet they still act like she is pure evil.
I'm live in Kansas. She is not terribly liberal. She's actually a very good governor and a decent person. Both sides should be happy with this nomination. - inactive, on 04/27/2009, -2/+19Just because government money is going to something other than oil companies or corn farmers doesn't mean it won't stimulate the economy.
- rationalist, on 04/27/2009, -5/+22You mean those of us who use an electronic communication network whose development was funded by taxpayer dollars?
Or, do you mean those of us who will get vaccinated thanks to taxpayer funded public health programs?
I assume you will nobly refuse to be vaccinated, and also will not bother us with posts chronicling your death from swine flu on the Intarweb. - inactive, on 04/27/2009, -2/+18Aaaaand mrfoos reveals that he is neither a climatologist, nor an economist, nor a medical researcher. Why don't you stick to talking on subjects that you understand? You'll look like less of an irrelevant fool that way.
- Aero347, on 04/27/2009, -4/+20"It didn't belong in a Economic stimulus package."
Great, so you'd like to see the stimulus package go to waste because a pandemic comes and wipes out our economy. Republicans wanted the bill worded this way, you can thank yourselves for promoting "fiscal responsibility". Good luck in 2012 morons.
Why don't you go sell the tires off your cars? - rationalist, on 04/27/2009, -5/+20Let's see you turn down the "ultra-left" socialist-medicine flu vaccines when it's your turn.
- woodsjransom, on 04/27/2009, -3/+17*perfect* now I am hoping that they don't wash their hands often.
- protoopus, on 04/27/2009, -4/+18i don't think that p.o.s. has been back to the "ranch" in texas, since he no longer needs to fool the bubbas.
- plainOldFool, on 04/27/2009, -4/+18Wouldn't preparing for pandemic crisis already fall under the CDC?
- RazorElite, on 04/27/2009, -1/+14Obviously you don't know what the ***** you're talking about.
- bicyclethief, on 04/27/2009, -3/+16Get back in the woodwork.
- MixMastaKooz, on 04/27/2009, -3/+16Random flu outbreak? Ever heard of the Spanish Flu of 1918? It killed more people than during that year of WWI. 660,000 Americans died. The average lifespan of Americans went down by 10 years!! More people died of the Spanish Flu in one year than during the four years of the worst outbreak of the Plague! Why was it so bad? The strain targeted those between 20-40. Those who were more likely to survive a normal flu infection were this virus's bread and butter. And now, THIS new swine virus seems to have a similar profile: targeting those in their prime! So yes, this situation is serious!
