GOP Kills Banking Bill to Pander to Anti-Poker Extremists
mysanantonio.com — The House Financial Services Committee defeated a bill submitted by congressmen Barney Frank, D-MA and Ron Paul, R-TX, that would have helped put online poker on the fast track for a clearly legal status. Titled the “King Amendment,” the bill would have freed financial institutions from the burden of policing the Internet by screening transactions.

- TheEngineer2008, on 07/03/2008, -1/+16House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Spencer Bachus (R-AL) took his opposition to all gambling to a new, radical extreme. He essentially demanded that banks fall in line and follow the mandates of the federal government, no questions asked! He followed this with an anti-gaming speech bordering on hysteria where he expressed a belief that government must censor the Internet and control what Americans do in their own homes. He even stated his fear that the freedom to play poker is dangerous, and that we all need the federal government to protect us from ourselves. He’s certainly far outside the mainstream of our community in his low regard for personal freedom. I know I don’t need Congress to “protect” me by controlling my actions in the privacy of my own home.
I'm glad Ron Paul stood up and spoke out against this. I hope we all will. The Poker Players Alliance, a non profit group dedicated to advocating for poker rights, has a letter at http://www.pokerplayersalliance.org/letter that you can send to Congress in less than 60 seconds. I encourage everyone to stand for liberty and to send this letter. Thanks! - Masternajee, on 07/03/2008, -1/+16The government still wants to be morality police.
- reed311, on 07/03/2008, -1/+6I know, next thing you know we'll have Congressmen submitting bills trying to define life at conception in order to de-facto force abortion laws upon the states and promote a Christian agenda.
- btschul, on 07/05/2008, -0/+1All pro life people are not christian. they just believe that life begins at conception, and they are anti-murder. Believing in not killing babies doesn't make you religious.
- CryRightardCry, on 07/03/2008, -0/+2How can such an immoral organization led by the most immoral and unethical administration hope to ever be able to police morality?

- Robjayne, on 07/03/2008, -0/+8That made me laugh, very good.
- Todash19, on 07/03/2008, -0/+13Everything Ron Paul says in the congress falls on deaf ears.
Only the people listen to him, and thats not really who counts in this case.

- NeoHomer, on 07/05/2008, -3/+0My Dad is a gambling addict. One day we'd go shopping and buy everything, the next it was getting repossessed. The only thing I got from it was learning that poker is lame. Gambling in general is a giant waste.
- btschul, on 07/05/2008, -0/+4That is probably true, but it is not the government's job to protect your dad from gambling. Your daddy is a big boy now, and he can make his own decisions, just like the people who choose to gamble responsibly.
- uglyowl, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3At the age of 18 you go to Iraq and can risk your life everyday, but at the age 18 if you play online poker you are the innocent youth who shouldn't be allowed to risk $5 playing cards that we must protect.
