- redcolumbine, on 02/18/2009, -43/+215Squeal about pork, but bring home the bacon.
- TexasSlim, on 02/18/2009, -55/+163Seriously, if they are so upset about the spending, and so convinced it won't work, then they should refuse the money.
- Kosh, on 02/19/2009, -25/+104This is NOT hypocritical. They opposed the stimulus bill, they opposed taxing people to pay for it, they opposed what they saw as "generational theft" since future generations will somehow have to pay for this. That being said, now that the bill is passed and they are going to have to pay for it ANYWAY they might as well try to get some money out of it. That's not hypocritical.
Now maybe I don't have a clue what I'm talking about, but I'm pretty sure if you knew you were going to have to pay for something anyway you'd try to make the most of it. - Kosh, on 02/19/2009, -18/+73Why? If they have to pay for it via their taxes they might as well get some. On the other hand, I bet if they could both refuse the money AND not pay taxes for the bill they would.
- cxret, on 02/18/2009, -57/+107Refuse the money hypocrites!!
- samblam, on 02/19/2009, -13/+62Why wouldn't they? After all, their districts are helping to pay for the stimulus package.
- ptheroux, on 02/19/2009, -9/+53Their constituents no longer have the option to chose not to pay for the stimulus, but the GOP congressmen do have the ability to influence if their constituents get some of their money back.
- harrisbradley, on 02/19/2009, -8/+43@Kosh, truth and reason have no place here. You words will fall on plugged ears.
- DFutureIsNow, on 02/18/2009, -52/+86Why is the MSM not reporting on this hypocrisy?? This should be plastered all over the news, republicans looking for stimulus handout from Obama... FLIP - FLOP - FLIP - FLOP...
- DD2CC2U, on 02/18/2009, -39/+70Vote The GOP Bums Out!
- lamejoketeller, on 02/19/2009, -8/+39I'm really annoyed by the argument that, since the Republicans expanded the deficit so much during Bush's term, and now they're opposing government spending, they must be wrong. That's a logical fallacy.
It doesn't mean they're wrong, it just means they're hypocrites. I was against wasteful spending when the Republicans did it and I'll be against it when the Democrats do it. - Kosh, on 02/19/2009, -16/+45Hi.
They have to pay taxes to support the bill. The government gets the money from somewhere. That said, as long as they MUST pay taxes on it they might as well try to get some of the money.
However, if you could find a way for a republican to neither pay taxes (to support the bill) nor get any stimulus money, I bet most of them would take it. - ricperry1, on 02/19/2009, -13/+42There's absolutely NOTHING HYPOCRITICAL about fighting to keep the money your constituents are paying in your district or state, even if you didn't think they should have to pay for the behemoth in the first place. I didn't agree with the stimulus bill, but I'll be damned if my congressmen don't fight to keep as much of MY money in my local area as possible. After all, I am one of the 60% who actually pays income taxes!
- LiquidIse, on 02/19/2009, -11/+39This is not hypocritical... now that the bill has passed, everyone is going to have to pay taxes on it.
Why should GOP District X have to refuse money they are paying taxes for?
You can oppose the bill, but once it passes your opposition means nothing on the fact that you still have to pay it. - Sagags, on 02/19/2009, -5/+32I don't think this is a GOP problem, I think this is a idiot problem.
- homah, on 02/19/2009, -8/+35Thank you for this post. Finally some logic.
- booksnmore4you, on 02/18/2009, -8/+33Both Olbermann and Maddow covered it last night on MSNBC.
- JumpingJack79, on 02/19/2009, -15/+36The greatest of them all is of course Jindal: "I will review the offered money VERY carefuly before I take it. I will only take it if it comes completely free and without 'strings attached'. If it comes with 'strings attached' (i.e. responsibility), then I will not take it."
- ousthouse, on 02/19/2009, -12/+31When the republican congress lowered taxes, how many democrats overpaid the IRS out of principle?
- JFreelov, on 02/19/2009, -8/+26Do I really have to be the first person to point out that voting against something is not on the same plane as taking advantage of something that has already passed? Given the chance to vote, I would get rid of carpool lanes, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't use them while they're legal. This is just one example, but one could think of many more (tax cuts come to mind). Did any of you seriously expect them to rollover and say, "Damn guys, we lost the vote. Now lets let them REALLY screw our constituents and refuse any part of the stimulus." Ridiculous.
- Dignan666, on 02/19/2009, -7/+25This is stupid. To refuse the money now would be like refusing to eat dinner because your friends all decided on ordering pizza instead of your vote of staying in and having top ramen.
- metrodigg, on 02/18/2009, -8/+25I hope that local AZ Republicans don't refuse the money. I know that Kyl, McCain and Flake are dogmatically against "earmarks", often to the detriment of the state, but I'm sure that state and local officials will gladly receive whatever funds they can. Even Jan Brewer who has been critical of the stimulus would be foolish to refuse any money. Then again she already reinstated funds for Arpaio to continue his "immigration" sweeps even though his procedures are blatantly wasteful and designed to increase his own media coverage. Was an entire SWAT team really necessary to take down a few janitors working in the middle of the night?
- bovox, on 02/19/2009, -11/+27Are you people retarded, or do you even know what a hypocrite is? (Serious question)
The only way that these Repugs could be hypocrites is if every person who opposed the stimulus bill (and their families for the next 2-3 generations until it is all paid off) were exempt from all future tax payments/increases towards paying it off. These people are being forced to pay it back, and their children, children's children, and children's children's children are also forced to pay it back.
Since they're forced to pay for it, they deserve some of it. - homercles337, on 02/18/2009, -15/+31The Corporate Media would not dare cover something like this. It is not in the interest of their owners.
- woodsjransom, on 02/18/2009, -33/+48There is a hypocrisy in there somewhere. I am curious to see how they will justify that when its time to campaign for their jobs again.
- JumpingJack79, on 02/19/2009, -19/+34No, you don't understand. The GOP is not inherently against spending. They're just against spending for OTHERS. That's not hypocrisy, it's perfectly consistent (and predictable too) :)
- inactive, on 02/18/2009, -33/+47yeah i'd like to hear one republican supporter defend their grand party on this one
- phatfiend, on 02/19/2009, -18/+32They aren't hypocrites. You don't suddenly stop doing what is best for your state just because you oppose a bill. They are paying tax too so they should at least get what they can from it.
HuffPo is such a ***** site. - Tenareth, on 02/19/2009, -2/+16Exactly. Fight the good fight, but if you lose, at least get as much of the prize as possible. Simple rational self-interest.
- Echota, on 02/18/2009, -14/+27If not for the Governors and mayors of the states and towns that have stepped up to say they are for any help they can recieve from the stimulus I'd say to he!! with them all.
And then I remember I live in one of those states and that our arsehole senator voted against it...and I know how bad this state and the people needs the help. - AriaStar, on 02/19/2009, -6/+18What they did as oppose it knowing it would pass anyway. This way if it doesn't work, they can say they voted against it. They were counting on it passing so they could fight to put in in their own coffers and have no blame if it ends up bombing.
Truthfully, I'd be weary of giving it to them. Give it to them and watch them blow it so that Dems look bad and they can say, "Don't look at us, we didn't pass it!" - shrewduser, on 02/19/2009, -6/+18how is this hypocricy? are you supposed to debate policy then refuse to co-operate when its passed just because you disagreed?
this happens all the time, with all political parties. but most diggers let balance and reason go when they let bias and sheep mentality in. - neilk85, on 02/19/2009, -7/+19oh i'm sure they're be happy to refuse the money if NOT ONE dime of the taxpayer money from their districts is used on this bailout. they still have to pay for it even tho they didn't want it so that entitles them to a piece of the money
that would be like my college decided to increase tuition $10,000 so they can put an expresso machine in every single room on campus. I may vote against it but if it passes I'm sure as hell gonna use the machines since I was forced to pay an extra $10,000 in tuition and couldn't opt out. - Insightful, on 02/19/2009, -16/+27Alright Palin, here is where you can put money where your mouth this. I expect you to out-Jindal Jindal on this one and refuse this Socialist Obama money for your State!
<wink> - shrewduser, on 02/19/2009, -9/+20think about it another way: they oppose having their constituents shoulder the burden for this stimulus package, for reasons their own they don't like the idea.
now that they have to why aren't they entitled to some of the spend exactly? - lordmike, on 02/19/2009, -3/+13Are you kidding? Alaska's the biggest socialist state there is! the government actually pays alaskan residents thousands of dollars just for living there (oil money that they "nationalized" from the oil companies).
- mikelieman, on 02/19/2009, -1/+11Spongebob beats everyone on cable in the ratings. So, it's not like cable ratings really mean anything.
Wait. I stand corrected. An episode of Monk was #1 a few weeks ago. - patpl22391, on 02/19/2009, -10/+19I love how the Congressional Budget Office has stated that this bill will hurt us in the long run, yet we still feel we need to pass it. Because, Government has done a bang up job already, huh?
- Ranzera, on 02/19/2009, -4/+13Are you kidding me? No seriously. Go look at a chart of states on how much they pay vs receive. Blue states already pay in more than they receive and Red states receive more than they pay. Only a couple Red states pay more than 1 dollar for each dollar they receive.
Maybe you should think before you start clacking away at your keyboard. - EntangledPhysx, on 02/19/2009, -6/+15Everything from the huffingtonpost is so liberal biased and purposely misconstrued, it pisses me off they make the front page so much.
- inactive, on 02/18/2009, -6/+14I can guarantee you KeithO and Rachel Maddow will talk about it.
- bjornski, on 02/19/2009, -4/+12Red-staters are good at that. The blue-states have been paying their way for years.
- maz2331, on 02/19/2009, -8/+16Yep - but since they will have to pay their share of the cost (in future taxes), even the opponents should get as big of a piece of the pie as they can now that it's passed. Unless, of course, we can get an opt-out into the whole thing.
- smacksaw, on 02/19/2009, -1/+9Even Ron Paul was faced with that very problem - he dislikes earmarks, but said he has a fiduciary duty to the taxpayers of his district to see that they are getting a return on their investment.
- lordmike, on 02/19/2009, -6/+14Typical republicans... whine about money for social programs, but then are the first in line when it's time for a government handout.
- latinjones, on 02/19/2009, -6/+14Diggers need to grow up. That means you.
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 02/19/2009, -5/+12It'd only be hypocritical if Republicans weren't going to pay for it...
- DangerCollie, on 02/19/2009, -5/+12Only if the rest of us get to opt out of the financial bailout and the cost of the Iraq war. We're all paying for your mistakes, so you can stuff it.
- Insightful, on 02/19/2009, -3/+10Yes, lordmike, I agree. Alaska is also the #1 pork State for decades and decades.
Hence all the head-scratching among us "elites" over Palin's non-sensical "Obama is a Socialist and I am a real American" comments. -
