- UncleScubba, on 03/26/2009, -18/+178Whatta surprise! I guess I gotta give them credit for one thing -- no matter how good or bad things are for the rest of the country, the Elephant Herd apparently never forgets its (rich, particularly closed-in) base!
Hey, since trickle-down didn't work at all in the '80s, let's try it again before everything goes to hell in a bucket [shrugs]... - booksnmore4you, on 03/26/2009, -11/+147That's all their plan ever was -- a 21st century feudal system.
- redcolumbine, on 03/26/2009, -13/+131Now that's what I expect of the GOP - consistency in the face of evidence.
- kareemachan, on 03/26/2009, -9/+110Another reporter reminded Boehner that he has "criticized Democrats for throwing together a stimulus quickly and nobody knew what they were voting on. Are you saying that your budget will be unveiled on the same day that the House is expected to vote on it?"
"No, I expect it'll be out next week," he said, though the House is expected to vote on the budget next week. "But understand that a budget really is a one-page document. It's just a bunch of numbers."
Does Boehner realize how absolutely idiotic and asinine and contradictory he was? Must say they have a lot of nerve to try to get the tax cut by us - again. - novenator, on 03/26/2009, -12/+107LOL, same old neocon tricks, new 'real conservative' face
- rhabdomancer, on 03/26/2009, -8/+86"Two nights ago, the president said, 'We haven't seen a budget yet out of Republicans.' Well, it's just not true, because here it is, Mr. President," said House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), waving a blue document in the air.
---
This doesn't make any sense.
Two nights ago was two nights ago. No plan.
Today is today. "Plan" appears.
Obama was right, and John Boner is a moron. - profgiles, on 03/26/2009, -12/+85The Conservative Answer Machine
Ask any question, any at all, on any subject and receive the same answer:
"Give more money to the millionaires." - footbag01, on 03/26/2009, -10/+83And that increases the deficit! So much for conservatism.
- DD2CC2U, on 03/26/2009, -7/+58Reporters -- mainstream, liberal and conservative -- greeted the Republican document with a collective scoff.
"Are you going to have any further details on this today?" the first asked.
"On what?" asked Boehner.
"There's no detail in here," noted the reporter.
Answered Boehner: "This is a blueprint for where we're going. Are you asking about some other document?"
A second reporter followed up: "What about some numbers? What about the out-year deficit? What about balancing the budget? How are you going to do it?"
"We'll have the alternative budget details next week," promised Boehner. Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) had wisely departed the room after offering his opening remarks. ("Today's Republican road-to-recovery is the latest in a series of GOP initiatives, solutions and plans," he had offered.)
A third reporter asked Boehner about the Republican goal for deficit reduction, noting President Obama aimed to cut it in half in five years. "What's your goal?"
"To do better," said Boehner.
"How? How much?"
"You'll see next week."
"Wait. Why not today? Because he asked you to present a budget."
"Now, hold on," said Boehner. "The president came to Capitol Hill and laid out his blueprint for his budget during the State of the Union. He didn't offer his details until days later."
"In general, where do you see cuts coming?" the Huffington Post asked.
"We'll wait and see next week," he said.
Another reporter reminded Boehner that he has "criticized Democrats for throwing together a stimulus quickly and nobody knew what they were voting on. Are you saying that your budget will be unveiled on the same day that the House is expected to vote on it?"
"No, I expect it'll be out next week," he said, though the House is expected to vote on the budget next week. "But understand that a budget really is a one-page document. It's just a bunch of numbers." - Homerr, on 03/26/2009, -10/+58GOP answer -
economy down = tax cuts for the wealthy!
economy up = tax cuts for the wealthy! - amprather, on 03/26/2009, -10/+53Swing and a Miss......and still hold the bat upside down.
- alphacoder, on 03/26/2009, -8/+51What I want to know is when do the Democratic Reps and Senators start being real teammates and call these people out?
If you remember not so long ago, no Democrat could say a word about Pres Bush without getting a gaggle of Republicans holding press conferences and going on their local media.
I know it is his plan to sell more or less but after all, he is on their team and it seems only reasonable that some of these Democratic leaders should step up. - Maddoktor2, on 03/26/2009, -12/+53Sorry GOP, party's over. Go home.
Greedy pigs. - ChristmasPoo, on 03/26/2009, -11/+51I wonder what's going through the minds of the folks in Ohio's 8th congressional district. Who would elect this dick. Another district I question is Minnesota's 6th.
- Insightful, on 03/26/2009, -3/+40GOP's new motto:
"We will tell you what we will do next week - which is to say "no" after the President announces this week what he will do." - deadbaby, on 03/26/2009, -2/+36Aren't budgets supposed to, I dunno, outline spending or something?
- profgiles, on 03/26/2009, -3/+36No. He doesn't. Which pretty much sums up the whole problem.
- killthekingx, on 03/26/2009, -9/+42So let me get this straight. The GOP supported giving billions to failing banks and now support giving massive tax breaks to the wealthy. Now I'm not one to go and boldly state that this country is an oligarchy, but with the Republican party so convinced that this country will fall apart if the rich aren't saved, should I be worried?
- Insightful, on 03/26/2009, -7/+40This is so evident in their defense of the AIG: they worked hard! They are smart people! They deserve all the bonus given to them, maybe more! How dare Obama fan the outrage against rich people!
Never mind they too joined the chorus and let's not forget Grassley (R-IA) calling AIG executives to kill themselves. - ThsGuyRightHere, on 03/26/2009, -3/+35Don't forget the billionaires.
- inactive, on 03/26/2009, -7/+38Did Boehner get a spray tan tax cut? I'm sure he wants one.
- joeditto, on 03/26/2009, -12/+4350 yard penalty for being stupid!
Hey Boehner, your time outs have expired.....Your team are losers.
Game over....get on the bus and go home... come back in 2020 with something that actually works for all of Americans...but don't come back with the likes of Sarah Palin. - booksnmore4you, on 03/26/2009, -0/+26I beleive in something, too, but I'm right.
I beleive you're an idiot. - Homerr, on 03/26/2009, -6/+29You know the Marine anthem about never leaving a buddy?
Why aren't we looking at the US as the whole team? I'm willing to take one for the team in terms of higher taxes if we all benefit. - CrimsonBlur, on 03/26/2009, -1/+24Plus the document he was waving around wasn't even the budget plan, it was a blueprint of a proposed plan they are going to release the details of in a week. They don't even know what those details will be today, but next week they'll have it all together. Right...
- homercles337, on 03/26/2009, -6/+27The cutting *must* continue until the bleeding stops, right?
- multiformat, on 03/26/2009, -9/+30Prepare for the inevitable class war. Most people can accept mild snobbery from the wealthy. However, when that wealth is gained by greed and deception and then carelessly paraded in some form of class superiority, the rest of us get angry.
- liquisoft, on 03/26/2009, -13/+33Huge tax cuts are what helped get us into this mess.
- AbsurdParadox, on 03/26/2009, -6/+25How about a huge tax cut for everyone?
- deadbaby, on 03/26/2009, -1/+20And... it's not even a budget. It's one policy.
It's like these Republicans decided being government officials was too hard so they decided to start an improv group comedy act that happens to operate out of the Capitol building. - JasonCox, on 03/26/2009, -8/+27I think the big 3 MSM networks should schedule an interview with Bill Gates and see what he has to say about this. Hearing the world's richest man railing against these tax cuts for the *already wealthy* would really bitch-slap the GOP.
- Maddoktor2, on 03/26/2009, -6/+24That's too stupid to even justify with an answer.
- ganymede2010, on 03/26/2009, -3/+20Unfortunately, Republicans are the masters of propaganda and voter manipulation. When it come to playing dirty, the Democrats can't hold a candle to the Limbaugh's, Hannitys, and Eric Cantors of the world.
- sbader, on 03/26/2009, -0/+17you forgot the /s
- homercles337, on 03/26/2009, -2/+18The repugs own the Corporate Media. Good luck trying to get air time calling out the stupidity of the right. Never gonna happen.
- pdxnick, on 03/26/2009, -6/+22oh, gop and their shenanigans!
- lordmike, on 03/26/2009, -3/+19There's a budget plan here? I thought it was a picture of a windmill... There are no numbers of any sort... no costs, deficit reduction or increas numbers, no totals or estimates on revenue loss from the billionaire banker tax cut... this is a joke, right? A practical joke?
- kingofinternet, on 03/26/2009, -7/+20the man-tanned face of intellectual and financial bankruptcy
- homercles337, on 03/26/2009, -6/+18Do you live in society? With that attitude i hope you live in the wilderness, off the grid, with no other people around.
- gryphon50, on 03/26/2009, -1/+13no, you are absolutely dead on.
- DooM, on 03/27/2009, -2/+14@Spyker - No. All of that was done last year by the Bush administration. From Bloomberg:
"President George W. Bush's administration "specifically contemplated" paying bonuses to American International Group Inc. employees in its November agreement to provide federal bailout funds to the insurance giant, the inspector general for the Troubled Asset Relief Program said today." - fullzer0, on 03/26/2009, -3/+15I'm going to be obvious and figure that some people may not have read the article and or the actual proposal.
- lordmike, on 03/26/2009, -2/+14The budget is being voted on next week! So, he's lying... what a surprise!
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 03/27/2009, -2/+14If there was empircal evidence that trickle down worked, then that would be the case. Since the only evidence regarding the GOP's implementation of trickle down stands to the contrary, it's hard to draw a conclusion other than books' comment.
- dsmx, on 03/26/2009, -4/+15Personally I would propose a massive tax hike for the wealthy and then put the increased revenue into paying off the national debt.
- ratherstupid, on 03/26/2009, -2/+12"[T]he top marginal tax rate would be slashed from 35 to 25 percent, facilitating a dramatic transfer of wealth up the economic scale".
That is not misleading, that is the sentence before yours. - lordmike, on 03/26/2009, -5/+15That's worked so well so far this century, hasn't it?
- ChiaGod, on 03/27/2009, -4/+14And now some context!
http://www.visualizingeconomics.com/2007/11/03/nyt ...
The upper tax brackets during the late 50's and early 60's were indeed astronomical (upper 80% I believe, maybe lower 90%). Then they were lowered to reasonable limits, then lowered again.
Then came Reagan and *really* lowered them. Then Bush Sr. came and followed this up with another tax cut.
Now, look at our national debt over the years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_public_ ...
Notice the upward slope staring about the Reagan years?
Notice the near plateau during the Clinton years?
The upper bracket tax rate under Clinton was 39.6% which seems to be the sweet spot. Bush I lowered it to 36% (note how quickly the debt grew) and Bush II lowered it to about the same levels (again, note the increase).
Now if 39.6% was just right and about 36% was very bad, what will a 25% upper tax rate do?
Sidenote, Obama's "Socialist" tax plan involves getting us back to the Clinton years tax rate which is nearly half of what it was during JFK's term. - AndrewMoyer, on 03/26/2009, -1/+11Same *****, different shovel.
- sbader, on 03/26/2009, -1/+11so from several tax brackets to just two?
