- OsceneInTx, on 11/09/2009, -6/+214Despicable.
Unacceptable. - empeethree, on 11/10/2009, -10/+184Can we let the DC Sniper out for one more go around before he is executed.
- StrangeFamous, on 11/10/2009, -2/+127If Jesus himself came down in a flying saucer and told them just how misguided, toxic and dangerous their behavior and beliefs are, they'd dismiss him completely and call him a traitor. "What would your father say if he saw you like this, Jesus?"
These people are hardcore old testament fire-and-brimstone weirdos. They should all be shipped off to Siberia. - brbeaird, on 11/10/2009, -7/+123Stop giving these idiots news coverage. Just stop.
- Batfishy, on 11/09/2009, -3/+102I've seen some footage of people getting in their faces, and they're completely unfazed by any amount of screaming back at them or attempts at reason.
Fred Phelps' particular brand of hatred is going to live on for generations - he's made sure of that. - jrm125, on 11/10/2009, -0/+98It's true. Jesus would likely get called a socialist and a member of the left wing conspiracy.
And then they'd kill him, again. - lead2thehead, on 11/10/2009, -4/+101Why do we have to keep calling this a church? This is a cult.
- greendalek, on 11/10/2009, -5/+77"My religion tells me to" seems to be nothing more than an all-purpose excuse for bad behavior.
Truly, how is this NOT a great racket? You can be as despicably rude to total strangers as you wanna be, simply because you made up your own mind that YOUR invisible-man-in-the-sky sanctioned it. - joejitsu, on 11/10/2009, -5/+75God hates Westboro Baptist.
- neognostic, on 11/09/2009, -9/+77Somebody is DC needs to personally take care of this.
No violence, just scare the hell out of them, get in their faces until they crap their pants. - BerateBirthers, on 11/10/2009, -3/+67That's his business model. They are all lawyers and they'll sue the individuals who bother them, the school for not protecting them, the city for violating their right to petition. How else do you think they live?
Fred Phelps is a human, living, breathing troll. And he's quite good at it. - BerateBirthers, on 11/10/2009, -2/+66Unfortunately Fred Phelps is real.
- SolitaireRose, on 11/10/2009, -5/+61IRL troll is trolling.
Of course there is something so wonderfully ironic about how large numbers of bigots denounce his methods but say the exact same things he does. They'll go down in history the same way the KKK, "Know Nothings" and other bigots do.
"You are an inspiration to me. You are my inspiration of how not to be. You are my inspiration to achieve a better way of life." - Jaz Coleman - clippclop, on 11/10/2009, -4/+55With 100% certainty, I can say that if someone showed up to my kids funeral saying it's good he is dead because he was gay, they would receive a bullet between the eyes. No questions asked.
I cant believe the nerve of some people. - Coffeedemon, on 11/10/2009, -5/+56"Love" is a registered trademark of MomCorp.
- Propethic, on 11/10/2009, -15/+61How do you know they don't represent god? He invented polio, he can't be all that great
- neoquietus, on 11/10/2009, -1/+46If you were God, I wouldn't be able to digg your down. :)
- jrm125, on 11/10/2009, -2/+47I still haven't figure out yet how these nutjobs perceive gay people as a threat. It's not like gays show up at your home and stab you or something.
These people need a job...and to stop twisting what's supposed to be tolerance and love from their religion, not an excuse to needless bash other human beings (presumably created by the same god that created themselves. - Solkre, on 11/10/2009, -3/+45They make Scientology look good!
- lorddazzer, on 11/10/2009, -15/+51Love is merely a result of a series of chemical reactions occurring in humans
- solunas, on 11/10/2009, -2/+38Gawd - that was funny :-D. Sick but funny.
- FormerBabby, on 11/10/2009, -36/+71God isn't love because God does not exist.
- iskin, on 11/10/2009, -2/+36Well, the Holy Bible is loaded with passages that state that homosexuality is immoral and therefore a sin. It's not like The Westboro Church people are trying very hard to find this stuff in the bible. You give hateful people a book like the bible, tell them that it is "God's will and testament", and the will use the legitamcy of the Bible to do awful things.
Of course, we don't stone adulterers to death, or women who aren't virgins when they are married, we don't force widows to have sex with all of her husbands brothers either, we get haircuts. As a society we have decided to reject some of the Bible's teachings. Homosexuality is just one more thing we should accept. - Kitakaze, on 11/10/2009, -2/+35Has anyone here read the online book about Fred Phelps? It has an amazing insight into his story — the religious issues, his gluttony, becoming obese, feasting on chicken dinners while the children had to eat some bizarre sludge porridge thing, followed by a fanatical weight-loss meth binge, his violence towards his family, how more than half the family ended up becoming lawyers, the hatred and lunacy of his story is breath-taking. Four of his thirteen children eventually abandoned him, and this is apparently "the norm" for children who were seriously abused — only one in four will ever admit that it happened. Bloody scary.
One of the things that Fred Phelp's children said of him was that he is addicted to hatred. And that after some of the kids defected, and another's girlfriend committed suicide after Phelps treated her like crap, the family finally stood up to him while he was beating his wife, and said no more. And it was at that point that he started directing his hatred towards homosexuals. He and his family is completely nuts. But damn, it's quite fascinating to learn about them.
In another universe, this guy could probably have been Stalin, Hitler or Pol Pot. It's madness, but on a smaller scale. - BerateBirthers, on 11/10/2009, -0/+33I think you meant the Fred Phelps brand of "being aggravating as possible, get someone so annoyed they bother you, and then sue" business. It's a business strategy for him and it works.
- solunas, on 11/10/2009, -2/+32Phelps is a nutjob, with insane sauce, wrapped in crazy bread.
- sugarazor, on 11/10/2009, -0/+29I highly doubt he meant "unacceptable" as "this should be illegal." This kind of behavior is unacceptable for any people who want to be taken seriously or welcomed into society. These people are cretins.
- Batfishy, on 11/10/2009, -0/+28Yes, they would. That family is entirely crazy.
- neognostic, on 11/09/2009, -2/+29Go to youtube, there are a bunch of great videos of them getting their ass kicked and run off.
http://digg.com/d319Wss - rockytop9808, on 11/10/2009, -3/+28I'm just ashamed that this is the view of Christians a lot of people get.
- jtscira, on 11/10/2009, -3/+28Leave the kids alone !
- tgjerusalem, on 11/10/2009, -0/+24It is all they have to do. They're a personality cult centered around Phelps, and Phelps is completely obsessed with his "protests." He literally thinks he's a vengeful prophet and/or the new Messiah and that he's doing battle against the devil.
He's not just anti-gay either (though we're his favorite apparently). He's almost as viciously anti-Jewish. His mission is to have all queer people and all Jewish people killed. He thinks all military defeats and natural disasters are the result of God punishing America/humanity for continued failure to execute us.
This is a guy who's (still) trying to raise money to build a monument to the goddamn tsunami, in honor of it killing Swedish tourists. Nevermind all the (predominantly Muslim) local people who died, they're irrelevant, but apparently Swedes are all gay and God sent a big wave to kill them all.
He also showed up after a West Virginia mine cave-in that killed a bunch of men, with signs saying "Thank God for dead miners." And at the funerals of Iraq war dead with pictures of soldiers photoshopped into hell.
He's insane. They're all insane. Not in the normal, metaphorical/insult "you're insane" kind of way. In the Jim Jones/Charles Manson kind of way. - tim620, on 11/10/2009, -22/+46I know you are trying to be funny, and God is love. But these people don't represent God.
- Mnementh2230, on 11/10/2009, -0/+23The only solution is to kill them all at once... it's worse than a hydra, who you can at least take a little time with, chopping off heads and burning the stumps - here, you have to chop off all the heads at once.
Note: I'm NOT advocating murder. - WhiskeyWrites, on 11/10/2009, -0/+23Unfortunately they seem to have the idea that because we do not persecute homosexuals that God is punishing all of us for it, looking at pretty much anything bad that happens as proof.
- xenuxenuts, on 11/10/2009, -0/+21and again and again and again.
- BaphClass, on 11/10/2009, -0/+21*****, that sounds delicious.
- lead2thehead, on 11/10/2009, -1/+21I think this is the video you were trying to post. The police had to evacuate them because they were about to get lynched. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZGKx2pTBQc
- jrm125, on 11/10/2009, -1/+21Oh...so like...God might be punishing us for tolerance of Gays the way Glenn Beck might have raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.
Neither God nor Beck have disputed the accusations...so it's entirely possible. - inactive, on 11/10/2009, -2/+21Everyday I think the antics of these extremists can't surprise me anymore, and every next day they prove me wrong.
- seltaeb4, on 11/10/2009, -0/+19Michael Moore already did. Hilarious!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABH_RFeeGAs - murrayc1968, on 11/10/2009, -1/+20Hmmm.... Which would I prefer??? (holds up imaginary scales with hands weighing the options) The existence of gay people who are generally peaceful and have never harmed anyone, or, a crazy family standing on the street corner every day (because they don't seem to have anywhere to go) shouting and preaching hatred, and violence, and obscenities.
- fatherdoom, on 11/10/2009, -6/+24"Hi, Im God, and I endorse this message."
- MWeather, on 11/10/2009, -1/+19You don't have to accept something for it to be legal.
- mrw07180, on 11/10/2009, -42/+60God is - fake.
- JDLamb88, on 11/10/2009, -1/+18Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Christians thought of that first.
- the2989, on 11/10/2009, -0/+17Not sick at all. These people are hopeless and are a complete burden to society. No good comes from their existence.
- WhiskeyWrites, on 11/10/2009, -2/+18Maybe the best thing to do would be to ignore them completely. If no one payed attention to them, would they bother to go out there anymore?
- tgjerusalem, on 11/10/2009, -1/+17This group likes to show up at the funerals of Iraq war dead, with signs saying stuff like "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "Dead soldiers burn in hell" & etc.
This is an expansion of their much older tactic of showing up at the funerals of queer people saying the same thing. Sometimes accompanied by pictures of the deceased with flames drawn around them. -
