- axel000, on 09/02/2008, -45/+184Wake up America, Palin/McCain is a dangerous ticket.
Palin was a former advocate of Alaska leaving the US. She is also anti-abortion, pro-assault rifle rights (see youtube of her with an M16), against contraception (see her daught hter, great policy) and demands creationism be taught in high school science class.
She is an extreme right wringer, we cannot have her in the White House. - inactive, on 09/01/2008, -14/+117Cool. ABC has now picked it up.
- johnnr2, on 09/01/2008, -15/+103Glad the MSM is finally catching up.
- teqnita, on 09/02/2008, -22/+98This woman is a totally inappropriate choice for VP. She has no experience and is a right wing ideologue . This is an example of his executive decision making? Yikes!!
- cweathers, on 09/02/2008, -24/+98For the sake of the country, John McCain must drop Sarah Palin from the Republican Party ticket. This is no longer a matter of left vs. right, this is a matter of a Vice Presidential nominee who is proven to be involved with anti-American activities. Being a member of a party that believes in seceding from the union not only disparages the other 49 states, it makes us question Palin's patriotism.
Palin has a lot of answering to do. - Aloisius, on 09/02/2008, -17/+67You must be kidding.
Secessionists? Really? Well I suppose that explains why she risked her baby's life flying to Alaska to have it there - so it would be a Real Alaskan. - Echota, on 01/05/2009, -17/+66Put you boots on folks! The $hits gettin deep!
I wonder if McCain will play his POW card on this fiasco! - dBass, on 09/02/2008, -23/+72Why does Ms. Palin hate America?
- jeffinfremont, on 09/02/2008, -17/+63Ms. Palin may very well eclipse Thomas Eagleton as the worst running mate in presidential history.
- gtluke, on 09/02/2008, -7/+43i thought digg loved dissent?
and hot chicks with guns? - FlaG8r, on 09/02/2008, -16/+51Don't forget global warming denier.
- chrissku, on 09/02/2008, -11/+46This is quickly starting to look like the biggest blunder in Presidential election history.
- sassce, on 09/02/2008, -22/+55Well now Palin being favor of Alaska breaking away from the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA doesn't sound very patriotic does it.?
But I noticed she wears the ole flag pin so of course she loves her country......
The only thing more frightening than the thought of John McShame being named president of the United States is having this anti choice, anti public education, anti sex education, rifle toting polar bear and moose killing, pro Alaska succession dictator under criminal investigation for abuse of power as his second in command. - republicker, on 09/02/2008, -3/+33If I was a state I would secede.
- FlaG8r, on 09/02/2008, -3/+32"Seriously though, I was in a cage for 5 and half years and couldn't secede from anything."
- blorc, on 09/02/2008, -9/+38What is wrong with advocating a state leave the US? If the people of Alaska as a whole do not want to leave the US, that's fine. If they do want to leave the US, shouldn't they be able to? It's the right of the people to govern themselves. The USA is not some holy union that cannot or should not be broken. It's united States.
I just think it's funny how secession has become a bad word, yet that's exactly what we did from Britain, yet somehow that was OK while others wanting to secede from the US are wrong. - TheGroje, on 09/02/2008, -6/+34"Secessionists? Really?"
Really. In a state with enough voters sympathetic to the concept that the AIP was able to put their candidate in the governor's mansion in 1990. Then again, in Alaska, it's less about what the party believes in, and more about who can get you that job in Juneau. - JAB6, on 09/02/2008, -8/+30You have to wonder what new information about Palin still waits to be revealed.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -6/+28The Alaskan Independence Party's introduction page has this quote from its founder:
"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." - gsadamb, on 09/02/2008, -14/+35Alaska First!
- LeRenard, on 09/02/2008, -2/+22That's so crazy it makes sense.
- leif777, on 09/02/2008, -4/+24and admit he made a mistake?... it'll never happen
- thcobbs, on 09/02/2008, -5/+25You mean that a governor who visited troops MIGHT have a video of them holding an M16??? **GASP!**
And it's not "pro-assault rifle rights" its called "pro gun" thanks propaganda hack. - JCH897, on 09/02/2008, -7/+26I hate Palin as much as the next guy, but she never "demanded" that Creationism be taught in schools; she only suggested that it be offered it as an alternate theory. Don't get me wrong...I am hardcore Darwin and I think "intelligent" design is the stupidest ***** ever, but don't take peoples' words out of context. It makes you look like a moron and nullifies your otherwise passionate stance.
- TheUnlearn, on 09/02/2008, -17/+34she has never DEMANDED creationism be taught in school, she said, “Teach both. You know, don’t be afraid of education. Healthy debate is so important, and it’s so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.”
then later explained that statement with this,
“I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum.” stop lying about her position on this.

Also, you have no idea if she is against contraception or if her daughter chose not to listen if/when they discussed it. Maybe she feels that parents and not schools should teach they're children about sex (conjecture). - Bakedwafer, on 09/02/2008, -8/+24My friends, let me tell you a story from when I was held hostage in a Vietnamese prison camp, where I was brutally tortured. During this horrific time the Independence Party was not recognized as an actual party, and wasn't even a state until January 3, 1959. Therefore, anything this party has to say today should be deemed inaccurate.
John McCain - cubicledrone, on 09/02/2008, -9/+23Hi.
Can we talk about fixing the country now?
Thanks. - nopRT, on 09/02/2008, -6/+20As a progressive, I don't care about this, but it's strange to me that the extreme nationalistic right doesn't seem to care either.
- wheresjim, on 09/02/2008, -10/+24When asked about recent revelations about his Vice Presidential running mate, McCain replied: "You know, when the Cong had me locked up in the POW camp..."
- DooM, on 09/02/2008, -3/+16If you advocate teaching non-science in science class, no matter how vociferous you are, you are a class A idiot.
- WasabiBomb, on 09/02/2008, -4/+17Teach BOTH?
As if Creationism was a valid counterpart to Evolution? That's like teaching high schoolers that Santa really DOES bring them presents at Christmas. - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -7/+20This is a good thing! Who would want to be part of this decadent ***** hole the finance oligarch shill government has turned America into? Pro torture, preemptive invasion of countries, millions dead in Iraq, destruction of the constitution and bill of rights, Arresting protesters and detaining reporters?
- Mesach, on 09/02/2008, -8/+21This reply was meant for earyan.
Show us examples of her having more experience than Barack Obama.
is it because Alaska is bordered on 2 sides by foreign countries? well hey, Barack Obama grew up in Hawaii, and that technically is bordered by HUNDREDS of foreign countries.
Is it because she ran a town or governed a State? well lets see, George Bush governed Texas, and let me tell you, he ran this country like he ran several of his past businesses, INTO THE GROUND. - mattyx, on 09/02/2008, -7/+19I guess that's what the republicans mean by "Less government". 1/50th less to be exact.
/m/ - PopcornDave, on 09/02/2008, -0/+12Nobody has the experience necessary to be president except for a former or sitting president but it's never stopped people from being elected or appointed by default.
None of the above '08! - rayjitsu, on 09/02/2008, -3/+14Their Motto: The North Will Rise Again!
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -9/+19It's not about being against contraception, but about being against TEACHING TEENAGERS HOW TO USE IT. She wants kids to get abstinence-only education, which is useless *****.
Maybe if someone taught Bristol about condoms and the pill her mom would have a shot at being VP. - Diggnabbit, on 09/02/2008, -1/+11I have known MILFS, sir, and Katherine Harris was no MILF.
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -3/+13Hey look, a story like the Obama flag pin one....
- Gerz1219, on 09/02/2008, -5/+14Yes, I think a group that wants to start the Second American Civil War is a bad thing. And I'm horrified to think that in less than a year, we could have a president whose motto is "Alaska First" and places the interests of 700,000 people up in ***** Nowhere ahead of the interests of 300 million other people.
- betona, on 09/02/2008, -3/+12Hell, every citizen of Texas would like to secede--rumor has always had it that Texas's entrance to the union has an escape clause. Granted, if you got really serious about it, then the 'Texas Secede' movement would lose steam. It's just something fun to think about when you get sick and tired of a disconnected Washington, DC.
/nothing to see here - BRod1, on 09/02/2008, -6/+15As someone who is voting for Obama/Biden, I have to say that this really won't be seen as a "big deal." Democrats will point to it and say, "See, she's dangerous!" while hardcore Republicans will say, "See, she's one of us!" while it likely will have little effect on a swing voter. While belonging to such an organization might seem extreme to us in the lower forty-eight, these kind of feelings aren't uncommon in Alaska or Hawaii. Make no mistake, I think she's an anti-intellectual extremist right-winger who is dangerous, but no one should be surprised that someone who embraces extreme right-wing politics would be into states' rights - even possibly outright secession - in a big way.
What really bothers me about Palin is that the single-issue crowd - the anti-abortion rights set - seem to be willing to overlook all the other flaws that have come out about this VP candidate all because she chose to give birth to her child despite knowing of the birth defects beforehand. Adhering to one core principle should not absolve one of the responsibility to live up to other principles.
More scandalous is that a poster-woman for the "holier-than-thou" set has a daughter that is pregnant...and unmarried...and underage... - MrSkrilla, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10I agree that it would be very scary if McCain/Palin won. However, I think (and hope) that by McCain choosing Palin he just lost the election. It looks like he did no research into her background and chose someone who has no experience, hates the environment, loves oil companies, gained her town of 9,000 millions of dollars by shady earmarks, is currently under investigation for the firing of a relative, obviously is not really patriotic about our country (not that I really care), and we found out yesterday her underage daughter is pregnant. Sounds like the best choice for VP McCain! We are now truly seeing McCain's judgment. Hopefully America wakes up and sees this woman for what she really is.
- Gerz1219, on 09/02/2008, -2/+11After eight years of being dismissed as a latte-sipping coastal elite due to my choice of residence, I'm decidedly unmoved by your accusation of bigotry. [sips morning latte] Would you care to explain how Alaska, which is sitting on vast natural resources, could possibly secede without provoking a civil war? Presumably, any secession would involve stealing valuable federal lands from the government -- I don't see how Alaska could survive as an independent nation otherwise.
- muckemuck, on 09/02/2008, -1/+10A recent poll showed that roughly one in 5 in the US agree that a state has the right to secede and they would support their state in those efforts. http://www.vermontrepublic.org/news_events/zogby_p ...
I think she was a terrible pick for McCain but... 20% is more than "Fringe". - Yarmin3, on 09/02/2008, -2/+10It was settled in 1865 that a superior fighting force can bring a separatist region back into the country. It did not settle if it was justified. The U.S. has been nation building since 1865. We just recently added Iraq to that list.
- akatsuki, on 09/02/2008, -4/+12What about the irresponsibility of having children so late in life that increases the odds of having Downs Syndrome children? Oh wait - "go forth and multiply". I respect her for sticking to her stance even when it came at some personal cost to herself, but there is nothing heroic in taking responsibility for your own actions, and it is a sad world that doing even that minimum is considered heroism.
If she is pro-abstinence, she should be for herself as well. If she doesn't want to take contraceptives then she should rightfully forgo sex. - Mightbiteyou, on 09/02/2008, -1/+9that can wait until after we find out if her daughter's baby is going to be a boy or a girl
- BaudiIROCZ, on 09/02/2008, -6/+14Country First = 49 states now?
- jdenzer, on 09/02/2008, -13/+21That's right just ignore all the facts and say Obama has less experience than her.
