- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+209I'm all for violence and Phelps reminds me why. He needs to be clubbed like a baby seal.
- macaca, on 10/12/2007, -4/+153If he was at my loved ones funeral..I am sure I would kick his ass. I am usually against the violence but this is freaking too much. He and his followers are a disgrace to a human race.

"Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."
The Westboro Baptist Church could stand to read the Bible a bit more. - Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -9/+116It's about time a gunman did some good and went after Phelps.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+109Actually, I hope someone does kick his ass.
It will be in Virginia, right?
VA has a "rage" law. I can't remember the actual name of it to look it up, but a friend of mine had charges dropped because of it. If someone intentionally tried to g out of their way to enrage you, you have some defense. A targeted, intentional assault on someone's emotions can be as damaging or more than physical assault, and physical force can be applied to in "Self defense". I've only heard of this one case, personally, but it involved someone who was constantly tormenting my friend (the guy that his wife cheated with...calling, if he seen him somewhere, getting in his face about it, bragging basically) ... Eventually my buddy had enough and decided to just lay the bastard out. Was initially charged with assault and battery, but the judge dismissed the charges on that account.
Im pretty sure that same thing would apply to this bastard. Freedom of Speech and Expression are one thing, a targeted attack on somones mental state is another. - littlebylittle, on 10/12/2007, -14/+111Also, please don't confuse Fred Phelps & Company's actions with anything related to Christ or His teachings.
The two are like oil and water.
Dugg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98@antifederalist
Totally. he can have his right to free speech, but if I was at that funeral, I'd reserve my right to pound the living crap out of anyone who made my family's grief any harder to bear.
He's a sick, *****-up, miserable, hate-filled opportunist. - Wonderkind, on 10/12/2007, -3/+97I swear, if someone were to show up at the funeral of someone I love just to display their dumb-ass signs, they'd sincerely regret it.
***** free speech. If you think my childs funeral is your political podium, you'd better be wearing a helmet. - 1wy1dange1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+78I really do believe that what goes around comes around, and I do not want to be around when Fred Phelps reaps what he's been sowing. What a pathetic excuse for a human being!
- cheesy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+82These people are ***** nuts. Picketing funerals of gay people because you feel strongly against homosexuality is one thing (not that I agree with it at all), but the funerals of children? They just don't make any sense.
From wikipedia:
In the wake of the tragic Amish school house shooting, members of Westboro Baptist Church planned on picketing the funerals of the five girls killed in the shooting. Their signs were going to call the girls "whores" and that they are "burning in hell".
!?!?!
Since when are Amish children "whores"? The Amish are harmless! - brettt, on 10/12/2007, -14/+82How about the full statement:
Don't confuse Christianity with Jesus' teachings. - curtvdh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+66@donutguy
That's exactly what he wants. Since he couldn't be bothered to make an honest living, he and his scum-sucking brood have hatched a devious scheme: pretend that a tragedy like this has something, somehow, to do with teh gheys and picket a funeral, where your chances of getting the crap beaten out of you are pretty good. Then sue your attacker, the city, the police and anyone else you can think of for damages.
It's better to leave them alone. That's what the PGR does - surround them with big bikes and rev your engines and sing the National Anthem at the top of your voice to drown the vermin out. The 1st amendment guarantees you the right to free speech (no matter how ***** up that speech may be) - it doesn't guarantee you an audience for your hate-mongering. If you get drowned out by someone else - tough *****. - DiggeralToolz, on 10/12/2007, -17/+74Phelps is to christians what Sharpton is to democrats, a real festering boil on the bun.
- anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+57"Phelps, just hang it up, man …. you’ve lost all credibility to humanity"
wait, hold on a minute. when did he have credibility in the first place? seriously. - jxs2151, on 10/12/2007, -4/+51"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ."
--Gandhi - Charlesbian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47Worst thing of all, if you watched the documentory where a British journalist lives with the Phelps family for 6 months, you literally see step by step as the parents brainwash a 4 year old daughter into their ways.
At the beginning, she completely doesnt understand what the sign she is holding means, or why they travel to funerals. At the end, she is yelling "FAG, JEW, ***** SUCKER BURN IN HELL" with the rest of em.
Bad enough to believe the way they do, unforgivable for poisoning an innocent child's mind with the same. - DeathtotheSwiss, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46You have to be an especially crazy "Christian" if you actually get up in the morning and think of protesting a funeral as a good thing.
- oceanmoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44No, Phelps is in a league all his own. Sick man.
To protest in this manner, during this tragedy, is obscene. - PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -8/+49i try not to confuse anything the modern evangelical right does with any of Jesus' teachings.
maybe they shouldn't either. - pgoetz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44Your violent response to their actions is exactly what these people want. It's a persecution cult. The more they're persecuted and hated by the "wicked and sinful" public, the more convinced they are that god loves them and is on their side. This is why they do this in the first place: they crave negative attention.
- orangemarmalade, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36http://duggmirror.com/politics/Fred_Phelps_Gang_to_Picket_Virginia_Tech_s_Funerals/
- eclipse492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30if it was me they'd need more than a helmet... some kind of... everything proof suit.
- 5N00PY, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32Well, one thing's for sure...his tactics are lower than a snake whigglin' in through the grass.
- TGMD, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32Someone needs to go start killing these bastards and not the innocent students.
- Leowyatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Yeah I saw the Louis Theroux programme too and it shocked me how brainwashed they are. They guy Fred Phelps won't actually be at any of the funerals, etc, he coordinates stuff from the ranch or where ever it is the live.
It was very amusing to see Louis questioning Fred as all the guy could answer with to pretty much every question was "what a dumb question". Basically he appeared too stupid and arrogant to understand what Louis was asking. - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26It's just what this low brow, inbred (yes, they truly are inbred, there was a TV show about it), bunch of hicks do for attention. Since nobody gives a flying ***** about them or their cause, they use the 5 year old method of "any attention is better than none at all". How people hold their temper with them however, is beyond me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29This is not about Politics, it's about distortion of Religion.
Now ***** off - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Someone needs to treat them (WBC) like we treated Noriega...show up with some HUGE speakers and blast them with Slayer at full volume for a couple hours.

Heck, they don't even Love their Brothers and Sisters, but rather, condemn them any chance they get. This goes 100% against the teachings of Jesus Himself.

Yeah, but if they're dead it doesn't really matter whether or not they thought they were right. - xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21In Canada if someone agrees to fight with you you can beat the crap out of them and not get sued for it. Someone should very clearly state ahead of time that if they show up with their colorful message that they will be considered fighting words. When they do show up give them a 30 second warning, then beat the living ***** out of them, it'll probably be the best that can come out of them.
If you can't because of laws protecting them everyone should carry a freezing cold bucket of water and do some drive by spraying. - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20this guy goes and insults people during a very emotional time in the worst possible way, sometimes soldiers funerals. i'm amazed he hasn't been beaten within an inch of his life by someone yet.
- pjkli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Just to give you an idea of what this nut job is about.
"In 2003, before the fall of Saddam Hussein during the Iraq War, Phelps wrote Hussein a letter praising his regime for being, in his opinion, "the only Muslim state that allows the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ to be freely and openly preached on the streets."[40] Furthermore, he stated that he would like to send a delegation to Baghdad to "preach the Gospel" for one week. Hussein granted permission, and a group of WBC congregants traveled to Iraq to protest against the U.S. The WBC members stood on the streets of Baghdad holding signs condemning Bill and Hillary Clinton and anal sex.[41] After Saddam was hanged, Phelps released a video commentary that stated that both Saddam Hussein and Gerald Ford (who had died the same week) were now in Hell."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Phelps
Now I'm pretty sure that Muslim teachings do not mention Christ as our Lord. - Pseudorious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It has been said that you do not believe in Free Speech unless you would stand-up and defend the words you would least like uttered.
It appears that when it comes to Civil Rights, the posters above adopt the "say what I will accept or die" approach. It's very totalitarian of them.
Ever ask how a lunatic church of 40 people can afford to attend all these funerals? The Westboro Baptist Church funds itself on lawsuits against municipalities that illegally block their right to protest. They're rolling in dough thanks to people in government as short-sighted as the previous posters and the Civil Rights Attorney's Fees Award Act. - bigjimslade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18
In a related story, God issued a rare press release Tuesday morning:
"I don't know who these people are, but I wish they'd stop using my name." - sathias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17from the article
"Why did this happen, you ask? It’s simple. Your military chose to shoot at the servants of God today, and all they got for their effort was terror. Then, the LORD your God sent a crazed madman to shoot at your children. Was God asleep while this took place? Was He on vacation? Of course not. He willed this to happen to punish you for assailing His servants."
Are they asking for a gunman to turn up to their church or what? - astrofire, on 10/12/2007, -10/+27"Christians made it possible for Bush to steal two elections"
You mean they voted for him, as was their right as US Citizens. - codmate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17That documentary was amazing, and disturbing.
They seem to be functioning human beings with brains and everything - how can they possibly see this as being right? It's totally and utterly beyond me!
Their purpose in life seems to be being hated. I guess it's a vicious circle. They stared off being hated a little bit and were convinced by 'gramps' (the head of their church) that this vindicated their beliefs.
I guess now they think the more everybody hates them, the more their god loves them.
The saddest part of the docuentary was when somebody threw something from a passing car at them and hit a young boy of about seven or eight, who naturally started crying and was upset.
How awful that they bring small children into their hatred!
I'm a total pacifict, but I wonder if myself and my freinds could have controlled ourselves if they had been at either of our parents funerals!
I admire the strength of the families that don't beat the living crap out of them.
I would have a sneaking, guilty sympathy for a family member that did beat the crap out of the adults in the group. - vsujohn2, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Religion isnt evil, people are.
And its people like you that make me really question the morality of athiests in general (im unaware of your religious viewpoint, but from your comment I will take a guess).
Many atheists want freedom from religion, how about allowing christians or any other religion freedom to have their religion without people like you trying to make a political statement about it? - mattxb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21"real festering boil on the bun"?
I can't decide whether to picture you as Ned Flanders or Carlton - gshipley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14He'd be well advised not to protest at a funeral in Virginia. The legislature here got wind of what his group was doing in 2006 and banned protests at funerals. They'll throw you in jail for that here.

Let me put it this way, religion in its very essence is not an evil, it is a faith and an understanding in a concept greater than the self. It is men that corrupt this and do things to put religion in such a bad light. I am an atheist, but I still think people should lay off the religion hating. If you want people to accept you as having no faith, then try and accept those with faith. - contact287, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14While I don't agree with the ways that Phelps goes about delivering his message, I will say that he does some good that many who have not been to one of these protests may realize. I had the opportunity to go to a funeral that he was reportedly going to protest last year.
For those unfamiliar, there is a group known as the Patriot Guard that follows the protestors around on motorcyles and attempts to shield the family from them. This was the case at the funeral that I attended, and ~150 bikers showed up to stage their counter protest. The Phelpses did not show up to protest, but the Patriot Guard stayed regardless. What was ironic about this situation was that at a funeral in the deep south for a black soldier, 150 white bikers showed up to support them. While Phelps is definitely crazy, he does a tremendous amount of good as far as honoring the dead because the community can unite against him and thereby support those who have fallen. - HalFTW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12There needs to be a mission in the next GTA game to waste these people.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I hope someone beats the ***** out of him.
- p2502, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11The real question is if the VA state and local police are going to provide security for the WBC.
if not, then for the locals i suggest you use the WBC as an excellent place to work out your own inner violence about the shootings.
To be honest it still perplexes me how one of these hate mongering drones hasn't gotten himself perished. - codmate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11What about the right to bury your parent or child in peace and with respect?
That is the 'right' that should take precidence in this case. Of that there is no question in my mind. -
