- kufurex, on 12/12/2008, -3/+132I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog-gone it, people like me more than Norm Coleman.
- profgiles, on 12/12/2008, -17/+107We are a democracy - count ALL of the votes!
- zelduh, on 12/12/2008, -4/+77Wow! They're gonna count all the votes! What an awesome concept!
Goody for Minnesota!
But wait, couldn't Coleman get the Supremes to stop counting all the votes? - inactive, on 12/12/2008, -7/+56we are a democratically elected constitutional REPUBLIC
- TheGrimLavaLamp, on 12/12/2008, -10/+52Franken might be kind of a loose cannon, but Norm Coleman bears a striking resemblance to Satan.
With that said, we should count votes, as a general rule. - thoughtlover, on 12/12/2008, -4/+40UPDATE: The campaign of Sen. Norm Coleman is taking its case to the state Supreme Court, and is asking that the counting of rejected absentee ballots be halted until a standard procedure is established.

This is now officially BUSH v GORE!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_v._Gore - douglasdao, on 12/12/2008, -8/+30Democracy wins!
- lolwaffle, on 12/13/2008, -11/+32It's a shame that absentee ballots rarely get counted. That's how most troops vote. Our troops are easily the most disenfranchised group of citizens.
- Batfishy, on 12/12/2008, -2/+18I don't know the rules, but right now, with everything going on, Coleman probably better just SHUT UP.
After all, a lot of people are pissed at the GOP today. - elo91, on 12/13/2008, -1/+15i'd like to see the candidates in situations like this forced to get up on a stage and honestly tell people what their motivations are. it has nothing to do with democracy or getting the votes counted. it's all about winning. if their roles were reversed, franken would be doing everything in his power to stop those votes from being counted.
- Revovisionary, on 12/13/2008, -0/+13Actually this is what would of happen in Bush v. Gore if Gore stuck it out.
- Koushiro, on 12/13/2008, -1/+14I really hope Al Franken wins. Norm Coleman is not a person I want representing myself or the great state of Minnesota.
- foofightrs777, on 12/13/2008, -1/+13You do realize both parties always will have lawyers? You do realize that bush won last time there was a recount that received this much media attention? You do realize that the "liberals bad mmmkay" meme doesn't work anymore? And finally, do you realize you have your head up your ass?
- Gerz1219, on 12/13/2008, -3/+15In which all votes should not be counted?
- darlingt, on 12/13/2008, -0/+12No. He can't get the Temptations to either...
- Stitchopoulis, on 12/13/2008, -4/+15Huffington Post habitually misidentifies democrats caught in criminal activities as republicans, and that's enough to be fair and balanced in my book.
Oh wait, flip that around. Huffington post doesn't present themselves as "fair and balanced" and yet they haven't misidentified the political party of politicians caught in criminal activities. (i'd have put deliberately in there, but it's probably an honest mistake that it's only republicans accused of crimes that are misidentified by "the news without a slant")
*terrorist fist jab* - thoughtlover, on 12/13/2008, -1/+12More details with a lot of quotes from Coleman's/Franken's attorneys:
http://minnesotaindependent.com/20025/canvassing-b ...
"[T]here is [sic] no longer any uniform, statutory levels or standards by which legally rejected absentee ballots are being considered and reviewed in Minnesota.”"
“There is a uniform counting standard in Minnesota: It is the election code of Minnesota. … They are hoping to run out the clock. … I don’t know what the Supreme Court or the state would say except, ‘Read the election code.'" - gatorfree, on 12/13/2008, -1/+12"At least Italy elects porn stars"
And we have elected two Governors from the movie "Predator." - codyman, on 12/13/2008, -1/+12yeah you wouldn't want to discuss and opposing viewpoint in an open discussion forum... that's just not right
- jerwin, on 12/13/2008, -2/+12The issue here is not that all votes should be counted, I seriously doubt anyone is really against that. It is the so-called chain-of-custody issue for the 'newly-discovered' ballots, or for any ballots that mysteriously show up weeks after an election, discovered in Billy-Sue's trunk or some such.
There is simply no way these ballots can be considered valid and legit unless it can be legally verified and validated as having come from a legal voting environment and have not been altered.
The reason for this is simple: It is FAR easier to come up with blank ballots than one might think, and it is pretty easy for someone (in EITHER party, I am not taking sides here) to sit down and fabricate a few hundred ballots, make them look legit and place them carefully somewhere where they will be 'discovered' later. This is exactly why we have chain-of-custody laws regarding legal evidence, and the same laws and scrutiny must be applied to discovered ballots. If their chain-of-custody cannot be established, they cannot be considered legit.
On the other hand, of course, if they are established to be legit, they MUST be counted.
To argue any other position is simply irrational. - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -2/+12I feel like this entire fiasco simply illustrates the importance of having the ability to hold a run-off election.
- mabs0, on 12/12/2008, -4/+14You should consider taking a shower then.
- yacks, on 12/13/2008, -3/+13Well if you heard what votes they were rejecting, you'd understand.. They were rejecting votes because some of the voter's ink went outside of the bubbles.. I guess what they taught in Kindergarten were true.. gotta color within the lines.
- amoirae, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10You mean like Dino Rossi, a REPUBLICAN, demanded multiple recounts the first time Christine Gregoire beat him?
- elo91, on 12/13/2008, -0/+10well then you should probably write the pentagon a strongly worded letter requesting that all of the troops stationed overseas be flown home in the first week of november in an election year. i'm sure it will go over great.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -5/+14That's total ***** absentee ballots get counted all the time.
- Herolint, on 12/13/2008, -11/+20I think Al Franken is a complete douche, but I think everybody's votes should be counted.
- zip000, on 12/13/2008, -1/+10Eh. I don't want Coleman to "just shut up."
I want whoever is rightfully elected to win. I would (greatly) prefer for that to be Franken, but I don't want Franken in there if he doesn't actually have the votes for it.
Coleman should do all that he can to be sure that all of the votes are counted fairly, and if that requires for him to do file suits then so be it. I don't want the vote count stopped and neither should any one that believes in the concept of democracy. - DrunkenPirate34, on 12/13/2008, -3/+12Bed-ridden? Military? Eldery? No car and no nearby polling place? Grow up you retard.
- sonicHeart, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9It WAS Al Franken who did the Stuart Smalley sketch. Not Phil Hartman. Do your homework.
- wpc33, on 12/13/2008, -1/+9Yeah! Waitin' in lahnz! That's whut mayks a AMERICAN!
- thenekkidtruth, on 12/12/2008, -2/+9Yes !!!!!
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7@LoneRanger: If it should turn out that the majority of Minnesotans voted for Franken, how would that constitute stealing the election? At this point in the game ideology, even one as jacked up as yours, means nothing. Either you want every legitimate vote counted or you don't. And if the roles were reversed and Franken was the apparent winner by a slim minority, yet within Minnesota's recount requirement, I'd still say the same thing.
This issue is a chance for ideologues to show how important democracy truly is to them. Thanks for showing your true colors there hoss. - fsweep, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7You can view some of the regular disputed ballots (like 6000 of them) at the Strib website http://senaterecount.startribune.com/ --- and I was surprised how many were challenged for "voter intent." Example, a ballot where every candidate is Republican, but Franken is selected as the senate choice. It is all black and white on the ballot---- but to assume a voter made a mistake because it isn't straight ticket?! Thousands of ballots have been scanned and uploaded.
Interesting stuff. - zip000, on 12/13/2008, -2/+9Absentee ballots typically only get counted if the difference in the vote count is close enough for those votes to matter. It seems kind of wrong, but they often don't get counted.
- omegared, on 12/13/2008, -0/+7if nothing, changed why have a recount.
- bagelmaster, on 12/13/2008, -3/+10TheGuyRightHere failed at Civics or never took it.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 12/13/2008, -1/+8Were the roles reversed, you would all the sudden become a champion for voting rights. Absentee ballots normally don't see the light of day because there aren't enough to sway the election one way or the other. In this case they're actually statistically significant.
- rrouse, on 12/12/2008, -2/+9Thank you, not enough call out evil when they see it.
- knute5, on 12/13/2008, -2/+9Looks like Coleman could be dodging a bullet if he loses, or walking right into corruption charges if he wins - still may happen either way. I'm wondering if the canvassing board is considering what MN doesn't need is to look more like Alaska and Illinois, on TOP of looking like Florida...
- smacksaw, on 12/13/2008, -3/+10Hey, didja ever think that you're Sisyphus, HuffPo is your rock and making stupid comments about HuffPo is your mountain?
Keep pushing! You can do it! - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -5/+11You sound like an eight year old playing on daddy's computer.
- sulthernao, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6Just to clarify, this is not Minnesota saying that they should count absentee ballots (they have already been counted and are in the vote total). This is them saying that improperly rejected ballots (there are only 4 reasons why a ballot should ever be rejected and it looks like some people added other things to the criteria of ballots being counted) should get counted.
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -15/+21I hope Al Franken wins. Norm Coleman just voted against auto loans. But apparently the financial bailout was a OK for him. ***** like him should be in the ***** jail right now. Hang the traitors.
- Bartboy919, on 12/13/2008, -2/+8Hey all the votes aren't counted yet, Franken may just win this now that those ballots are counted.
- CarzorStelatis, on 12/13/2008, -2/+8Yeah, because the career politicians have done such a brilliant... oh, wait. Maybe "zero experience douches" are what we need.
- eclectro, on 12/13/2008, -3/+9They actually ban your IP. The backstory is simply this. If you disagree with one of their bloggers or they simply do not like your post because it does not "fit" with the liberal bias they are trying to propagandize it simply does not appear. And, if you question the credentials of anyone posting there (on the slightest), your IP is banned. It's that simple.
I have nothing against a liberal viewpoint. And, being a middle of the road, agree with some of the ideas. However, some of what they post there is simply sensationalist, or they too readily dismiss a possible opposing point. BTW, I am not affiliated with any political party.
You should google this. Someday I hope to call them out on this with a "counter website." Google "huffington post censorship". - alais, on 12/13/2008, -1/+7They should just ask Franken how many votes he had and get this whole thing over with.
- diemunkiesdie, on 12/13/2008, -2/+8Proof? I've never seen this because I don't read Huff Post, but I am curious to know the back story here. Were you censored or something?
- zip000, on 12/13/2008, -0/+6I gotta gtfi to MN.
