- rcook18, on 12/19/2008, -73/+265Al Franken would be a nice change from that lying weasel Coleman.
- Deadpixel1221, on 12/19/2008, -43/+185He's good enough, he's smart enough and doggone it, Norm Coleman SUCKS!
- AznAstronaut, on 12/19/2008, -54/+157Great success! I will point out that this was Paul Wellstone's seat, and Minnesotan liberals (myself included) get huge (political) hard ons for Paul Wellstone. I'm glad to see someone who both shares Wellstone's values and was a personal friend of his take the seat back; that seat never belonged to Coleman and I'm glad to hear it never will again.
- DustyMagnum, on 12/19/2008, -20/+99I bet a filibuster from Sen. Franken would be hilarious. I'd TiVO that *****!
- gtluke, on 12/19/2008, -43/+119If this was a republican doing this, it would outrage across the news and digg
- Goochman, on 12/19/2008, -8/+61You get what you pay for....oh wait that's Illinois
- AndrewMoyer, on 12/19/2008, -10/+59He's good enough, he's smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like him!
- RansomHoldiay, on 12/19/2008, -54/+97good news for america.
- Jericho6, on 12/19/2008, -10/+49Wow, some bitter people in this thread. A state mandated recount occurs, and a different result pops up and all of a sudden it's a vast conspiracy? In this day and age, I have a hard time believing that to be true. This isn't the first time a recount has yielded a different result. It just goes to show the amount of error in these vote tabulations.
- EtherGnat, on 12/19/2008, -5/+43Dan Quayle. That guy cracked me up.
- OzzieAlThor, on 12/19/2008, -7/+42If this was the Joker doing it in an Apple store it'd have 6000 Diggs already.
- Bartboy919, on 12/19/2008, -7/+41Im going to come out and say that Franken would have won this single handed if Barkley wasn't on the ballot, but oh well, a couple weeks delay from a decision is a minor inconvenience at best.
- NoDrama, on 12/19/2008, -37/+69It should be noted that while MN went strongly for Obama, the decision on Franken vs. Coleman was obviously much closer to a toss-up. Franken has shown bravery in his willingness to call out Fox and sundry other spin-meisters; but he has virtually no experience with the tools a politician needs to wield and ran a not-entirely-convincing campaign despite being a demonstrably intelligent man.
If he succeeds at unseating the incumbent Republican who, in all probability, would not have won the office but for Wellstone's tragic death very close to the election, it will have been by the narrowest of margins. He has his work cut out for him earning the respect of his constituents. - OzzieAlThor, on 12/19/2008, -1/+30If this went down to an exact tie, they would literally have to draw straws or flip a coin to see who would win.

I love my state. - sulthernao, on 12/19/2008, -1/+27WTF. You're comment is ridiculous. It's like you don't have a clue about what's going on.
1. Votes were never found in a car, that was made up by Coleman's lawyer.
2. "Projected" to win
3. Coleman is the one who has challenged far more ballots
4. Coleman is also the one who is not letting mistakenly rejected absentee ballots count
5. You don't understand the recount process. - PGPirate, on 12/19/2008, -1/+25I'll believe it when its certified
- 3nder99, on 12/19/2008, -16/+39Franken did wonders for Air America Radio.
/s - Dalhectar, on 12/19/2008, -3/+26LIZARD PEOPLE!!!!
- terracottapai, on 12/19/2008, -0/+23That vote wasn't counted.
The Coleman campaign argued that you couldn't prove that 'Lizard People' wasn't a person's name, and the board agreed. - strib666, on 12/19/2008, -4/+26Why do I think that the fact that that's not true won't prevent you from repeating it again in the future?
- Dawggoneit, on 12/19/2008, -4/+26Yeah! How dare they spend time at his funeral supporting the causes and values that Wellstone spent his life fighting for!
- BarrettAnderson, on 12/19/2008, -6/+26@DangerCollie
Sorry, Digg is not a cross section of society as a whole. If that were the case, Ron Paul would have won the republican primary, 98% of society would be atheist, and almost everyone would act like they are between 13 and 16 years old.
For the record, I voted Romney in the primary, am Christian, and 23 years old. I do not feel like there are many other people like me on Digg, but there are tons like me in the real world (at least where I am from -- California). - whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -2/+22"There's little doubt" is going way too far. Have you looked at the exit polling?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25383923
"If these were the only two candidates for senator on the ballot today, for whom would you have voted?"
43% - Al Franken (Dem)
46% - Norm Coleman (Rep)
10% - Would not have voted for senator
Both candidates did a lot to alienate the electorate. There were plenty of us who weren't very happy with either. I filled in the bubble for Franken, but not very enthusiastically. - Seemefearme, on 12/19/2008, -1/+21Because his previous career as a comedian means he has no business as a politician? I bet he has more business being there than most politicians do. Please offer something more than petty judgment next time.
- Bartboy919, on 12/19/2008, -11/+30Like a pole vault sir, like barely pass it.
- avianeddy, on 02/17/2009, -6/+25It's good to have a truly progressive, reasonable, and knowledgable voice in the senate. Goes to show that at least one former talk show host actually knew what he was talking about.
I'd like to see Limbaugh or Hannity even TRY their hand at policy. And I mean democratic policy, not self-service and nepotism. - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -3/+22You're right, not many people outside of Minnesota are aware that there was an independent candidate on the ballot here, Dean Barkley, who drew a considerable amount of the vote -- about 18 percent iirc. There's little doubt he pulled much more of the electorate away from Al Franken than he did Norm Coleman.
Anyway, if Al really scrapes it out and wins by less than a hundred votes -- holy cow. I wonder if there's ever been a closer victory margin in US senatorial history before? - inactive, on 12/19/2008, -1/+20Yes, enertainers belong on TV, not in office!
...which explains so well why Repubs love Reagan, Schwarzeneger, and Ventura (who has strong conservative support). People in entertainment should never be elected for office, right? - inigomntoya, on 12/19/2008, -0/+18You should lobby your local congress to change that to a cage match in the octagon. A lot can be said about someone who wins the popular vote, but even more can be said if they can also physically kick another man's ass!
- pgoetz, on 12/19/2008, -1/+19Wow, after the last 7 11/12 years you actually have the nerve to say that? Chutzpah to you. May you enjoy the torture you've magnanimously afforded others. Call it the Golden Rule -- in reverse.
- Jicima, on 12/19/2008, -7/+24ya, I am totally conservative and I will still use this site, and all you wankers who can't stand a dissenting view should grow up.
- apeweek, on 12/19/2008, -5/+22That whole 'votes in a car' story was a complete fabrication, designed to cast doubt on the process. Look, even Fox news knows that story isn't true:
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2008/11/18/coleman ...
"...no mention was ever made of them being "found" in her car, but rather, the ballots, which remained sealed until they were counted, were part of the normal delivery of absentee ballots late on Election Day."
Pay attention to stuff like this. It gets circulated by some in the Republican party who want to make you think the counting process hasn't been transparent and legal, when in fact it has. - laserdog, on 12/19/2008, -0/+17Not to mention one of the keystones of the argument that it was a political rally was based on realtime teletype for the deaf attendees.
So when the crowd cheered and then the sign said "cheering", it was reported out of context that the organizers were cajoling the crowd into cheering at political moments, rather than just a teletypist doing their job capturing what was happening.
If anyone is guilty of exploiting Wellstone's death it is Coleman. - bentman78, on 12/19/2008, -1/+18Why are you telling Jesus about the runoff?
- Aadain, on 12/19/2008, -17/+33Pretty much. Digg has a very liberal bias (well, its users do anyway), so this should not be a surprise to you. If you do not like this, there are other websites on the internet that will cater to your political views :) That's the beauty of the internet!
- UselessTrivia, on 12/19/2008, -2/+18This is way far from over.
The supreme court ordered yesterday that both campaigns have to MUTUALLY AGREE on which of the absentee ballots were rejected in error BEFORE opening the envelope and counting it.
If every rejected absentee ballot were subject to an exact neutral standard Franken is estimated to pick up something like 100 net votes. But since the campaigns have to agree, Coleman is pretty much going to veto opening every single ballot, or only open enough of them that Franken can't pick up more than 15-20 votes.
And they have to be done by Dec 31st. But they don't really, because the court ruling didn't prohibit either campaign from contesting the election in court again after that date.
This will drag on for months. - Antimatter85, on 12/19/2008, -3/+18I dugg you up for "political hard ons"
- jftitan, on 12/19/2008, -2/+17ummm but Al Gore didn't win in court.
- moxley, on 12/19/2008, -0/+15He's been involved in politics for a lot longer than most peple realize, and he is a good man, definitely. I met him at the 2000 shadow convention in Philadelphia.
I give him props for sticking up for himself and ensuring that votes are counted.
Coleman is a piece of *****. - swrostmore, on 12/19/2008, -3/+17Ted "series of tubes" Stevens?
Don "Those who bite will be killed, too. And I'm very good at that." Young?
Coincidentally both Alaskans... - djholybolt, on 12/19/2008, -3/+17Not so fast, Douchebag. Franken isn't STEALING anything at all. ***** Coleman.
- DrVic, on 12/19/2008, -0/+14Dan Quayle was elected to the Senate, twice ('80 and '86). But thanks for playing.
- Nosferotu, on 12/19/2008, -5/+19And, you know, they found votes that hadn't been counted. That seems like a pretty legitimate reason to have a problem with the outcome, right?
You Republicans are just so bitter these days, aren't you?
I love it. We'll drag you, kicking and screaming, into a brighter future. It's okay, it will all be okay. - pintomp3, on 12/19/2008, -8/+22god forbid they count every vote. nothing enrages republicans more than that.
- Jericho6, on 12/19/2008, -11/+25I thought it was funny that Coleman wanted Franken to waive his right to a recount. Considering this result it doesn't make him look any better.
- pintomp3, on 12/19/2008, -1/+15stop recount, diebold, daddy's supreme court appointees select you. it's hilarious to see republicans complain about recounts.
- o0joshua0o, on 12/19/2008, -0/+13Few comedians, but lots of clowns.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 12/19/2008, -11/+24I hope Franken wins but the math of projections gets fuzzy. It's basically saying that so far Franken has had x% of challenged ballots go in his favor whereas Coleman as only had y% go his way. I hope he wins but will reserve elation until the last ballot is counted.
- lolwaffle, on 12/19/2008, -5/+18"If this was a republican doing this, it would outrage across the news and digg"
Yeah... how dare anybody want a fair vote count! - cathpah, on 12/19/2008, -11/+23actually he did. He was one of the few hosts who I could actually stand. (he, ed schultz, and rachel maddow). The others were just a bunch of knee-jerk liberals who don't ever change their stance or truly think through any of their ideals.
The fact that they couldn't generate enough ad revenue and therefore couldn't stay afloat in most markets, has absolutely ZERO to do with Al Franken. -
