- gvoakes, on 10/23/2009, -9/+248Al Franken has made a smooth transition from comedy to politics, good on him
- WordsnCollision, on 10/23/2009, -5/+201Franken's making a habit of this - carry on!
- barrimon, on 10/23/2009, -6/+187This guy is looking like Muhammad Ali up there. He is knocking people out!
Just imagine if we had 50 more Senators like him. I wouldn't be yelling at my TV. - killyoutoo, on 10/23/2009, -3/+128Who's the hottie staffer behind him :)
- enantiodromia, on 10/23/2009, -0/+111Most Congressmen unwittingly do the reverse.
- LtAction, on 10/23/2009, -7/+104Gosh darnit, diggers like him!
- PuddMaster, on 10/23/2009, -1/+75is it me or is there always a hot staffer behind franken every time he is nutting all over someone?
- homedaddy, on 10/23/2009, -8/+81We need more people like Franken on both sides. More substantive argument and less "you lie" or "Fox is the enemy" B.S.
- valetudomexican, on 10/23/2009, -4/+61Paul Wellstone would be proud.
- charlietuna, on 10/23/2009, -0/+49Bill Clinton is looking into that at this moment.
- apastafarian, on 10/23/2009, -3/+51Thank you Minnesota!
err..now can we talk about that Backmann thing? - TheIndigoSky, on 10/23/2009, -0/+47His point was that that is just one cherry-picked aspect of health care. That's akin to saying "The Mets have a better left fieldsman than the Yankees, so therefore the Mets are better." For the money our country puts into health care, we should be getting a lot better results than we are.
Thousands upon thousands of Americans die each year as a result of their inability to get proper health insurance, in addition to the thousands upon thousands who file bankruptcies because they get sick. - nmanguy, on 10/23/2009, -0/+46I'm as conservative as they come, and I have to say, this "funnyman from the TV" has already done a lot more than most of the other politicians on both side, including the President. In fact, he's the only one who's even gone and done something that I agree with. I mean, I believe that rape=bad, no matter what, and those Republicans who voted against his bill shame their entire ideology. Companies that essentially condone rape need to be punished, not rewarded.
Don't get me wrong, I disagree with him on everything else that I've seen him say, but at least there's one good thing coming out of the government this year.
Well, unless that Hawaiian Democrat (forgot the name hehe) pretty much removes the only thing I actually liked Franken for. - Ryokuchaa, on 10/23/2009, -1/+47The comedian many thought by being elected was going to make a joke of the system turns out to be the only senator that seems to treat the job he was elected to serious.
I find it amazing that there is anyone at all in the US with health insurance that file for bankruptcy because of medical related bills. If our insurance companies were as good as they preach themselves to be, they should not have to be told by Al Franken how ***** a job they are doing compared to "socialist" countries in this aspect.
I don't even get the debate against health care reform, how can anyone in the country think the system is just fine and nothing needs to be done, and government just needs to step back and do nothing? We saw what we get left with if we leave an entire industry to regulate itself, it is one thing for people to lose their homes, now we are going to leave our lives in the hands of the same greed minded corporations? - MacBookForMe, on 10/23/2009, -7/+49Amazing politician...(we miss them here)
- MistySteele, on 10/23/2009, -6/+47I was always luke warm on the guy, loved his skits and standup, didn't care for his books much. I was concerned that he was just attention whoring with his candidacy like he did with his talk show.
Who would have guessed that his greatest joke ever would be to become a totally serious, engaged, intelligent representative and one of the few politicians currently trying to talk sense?
That's the most awesome and hilarious thing he could have ever done. - MistySteele, on 10/23/2009, -1/+39I agree with your wish, but I'm afraid it too often feels like Fox actually IS the enemy of your sentiment.
- calypsoschnitzl, on 10/23/2009, -7/+391, 2, 3, 4.... knock out. Reform opponents have no rational arguments.
- timothycrash01, on 10/23/2009, -1/+33There seems to be a hot chick behind him in every video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6kiZIlMFto&fea ...
Is that the same woman? - MrMischief20, on 10/23/2009, -1/+31Well done Senator Franken!
- valetudomexican, on 10/23/2009, -1/+31 Those are successful treatment rates, NOT survival rates. In the US a lot of folks die from cancers without seeking treatment. The cancers with the higher survival rate are the ones that are noticeable as cancer early on (skin cancer, esophageal cancer, etc.), and are therefore more likely to make people seek treatment. In the US, if you don't have insurance and your knee or hip hurts a little you won't seek treatment until the pain is unbearable. In France or Germany patients seek treatment because it's affordable to them. If the patient has bone or pancreatic cancer they'll probably die, but it'll only show up in a study like the one the woman in the video is referencing in the country where it was treated(France, for example), and not in the US.
@indigo, nice baseball metaphor. - caramba421, on 10/23/2009, -1/+30Seriously, she is fine as all hell.
- DooM, on 10/23/2009, -1/+29And the Senate is a part of... anyone? anyone? The congress. Which makes a Senator also a.. anyone? anyone? Congressman.
- termerjur, on 10/23/2009, -2/+29I like how Furchtgott-Roth sloooowly and slightly tilts her head. I get the feeling she is so interested and ready to pounce on a flaw...but craaaap...nothin's poppin' her way damnit!
Head tiiiilt...
(not exactly faulting this human trait - it's just funny) - valetudomexican, on 10/23/2009, -0/+26Do you own a woodchipper?
- stevenhatfield, on 10/23/2009, -0/+25They recounted the votes until they were positive that he didn't lose.
- Paranor01, on 10/24/2009, -1/+26wow, Franken is getting his own personal trolls on digg.
you know he's doing quite well when that happens cause someone feels threatened somewhere. - WraTH017, on 10/23/2009, -3/+27You know who would have guessed? People who read his books and listened to his radio show. He's a very fair, thoughtful, and does his research before he puts anything on paper, or on the air, and he's also very funny.
- geodebug, on 10/24/2009, -1/+25No wonder they're called 'staffers'
- 17999, on 10/23/2009, -0/+24You slept through the 12th grade.
- barrimon, on 10/24/2009, -1/+24Where do you get narrow minded? You just make it up. You just say something ridiculous and then pretend it makes sense. Good job.
- Paranor01, on 10/24/2009, -0/+22I'll take them side by side... if ya know what i mean /* nudge nudge say no more! */
- 17999, on 10/23/2009, -0/+22Agree or disagree with him, if more Congress members went about things the way Al has been, the US would be better off.
- SRSco, on 10/23/2009, -0/+21No...here's a side by side:
http://i.imgur.com/0G4fJ.png - valetudomexican, on 10/23/2009, -0/+21Even if the cancer rate study is 100% accurate, that can be attributed to current infrastructure(medical equipment), which won't disappear if we change how medicine in this country is paid for. Even if her one little point was right, all that means is we can have the high cancer survival rate AND not bankrupt those (un)fortunate enough to survive.
- valetudomexican, on 10/23/2009, -0/+21And YOU, barackalypse, will have to pay for it ALL.
- theSAMOL, on 10/24/2009, -1/+22You should go tell the rest of the industrialized world how ***** their health care is, I'm sure they'll have a few things to say about it.
Seriously, shut up. Socialized health care would drop prices for everyone and cover people who cannot currently get coverage, what's the ***** problem?
Or are you just from the Reagan school of thought: "GOVERNMENT IS BAD CORPORATIONS ARE GOOD". We've seen for the past couple decades how well that has worked out, along with the whole "trickle-down" economics theory.
The rest of your post is sensationalist *****, not worthy of a response. - cryonix, on 10/23/2009, -0/+21I find that offensive, only we're allowed to use that word,
Unless you have a friend who is on digg and he said it was cool, the we could let it slide. - JTRSe7en, on 10/23/2009, -0/+21They are talking about individuals having to file for bankruptcy because they can't afford their medical bills not companies going out of business.
- tmonsta1, on 10/23/2009, -0/+19well Dr. Thunder actually he's both
all members of congress (that are male) are Congressman
Senators in the Senate
and Representatives in the House - bobbi21, on 10/23/2009, -3/+22The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and GENERAL WELFARE of the United States.
sounds like making sure ppl don't die from pneumonia and making sure 1/2 of bankruptcies (which are from medical costs) don't happen is part of the general welfare of the US - SpeedSteamBoat, on 10/23/2009, -1/+20Joke's on everyone who ever dismissed him as "just a comedian" during his candidacy.
Though, having read his books, I had pretty good idea this was going to happen. All kidding aside, his stuff was all very well researched and argued. It's hard to imagine someone reading that and thinking he wasn't going to take place in the Senate very seriously. - stonebear, on 10/23/2009, -0/+17He's talking about patients being bankrupted by the cost of their medical treatment.
- kd1s, on 10/24/2009, -0/+16I know, it's like perfectly executed deadpan comedy. He had her looking like she'd just swallowed something nasty. I don't think they expect Senators to be antagonistic like that.
I'm glad he's calling them out on their *****. It's about god damn time we got some guys in congress that don't just toe the line. Hmm, here's a presidential ticket: Franken/Grayson in 2012! - geodebug, on 10/24/2009, -3/+19ooh that was a belly flop of a civics fail
- bobbi21, on 10/23/2009, -1/+17this is the type of misinformation al franken was talking about. Because of the increased diagnosis of benign cancers in the US you have increased "survival" rates and increased numbers of dangerous treatments which are included under deaths from surgery or deaths from chemo side effects. If you measure actual life expectancy, europe and most other industrial nations beat the US
- nickrct, on 10/23/2009, -0/+16Its not you
http://www.buzzfeed.com/awesomer/al-frankens-hot-a ... - captspaulding, on 10/23/2009, -1/+16we are working on it.....
- Phaedryn, on 10/23/2009, -0/+15You do realize that Congress is made up of both the House and the Senate, right?
Senators and Representatives are both congressmen. - Moralogic, on 10/24/2009, -0/+15I was kinda thinking, "okay he is going to get into politics, half ass it and be better than a normal politician, but still not really do a quality job," but damn he is actually being the politician people actually deserve and should be getting to choose from in elections. This guy doesn't mess the ***** around. If both parties had more people like him that actually worked out quality arguments like this, we would actually have a mostly functional government again.
