- richirwin, on 09/26/2009, -9/+282"Rush & Beck who aren't too smart themselves, talking to dumber people.
This is EXACTLY what I've told my wife when she wonders why people listen to Rush and Beck.
Dumb people listening to people who are only slightly smarter than themselves think (a) the person talking is intelligent and (b) they themselves are smart for listening.
It's like an Escher-esque portrait of dumb. - stubarwick, on 09/27/2009, -2/+215"A village cannot reorganize village life to suit the village idiot, it is as simple as that." Haha, I like this guy...
- novenator, on 09/27/2009, -5/+196FTV - "The main stream, not just media but culture doesn't sufficiently take stock of the fact that within our culture we have a subculture that is literally a 5th column of insanity, that is bred from birth through homeschool, christian school, evangelical college, whatever, to reject *facts* as a matter of faith."
Boom! Nailed it. - Slashered, on 09/26/2009, -6/+177I know this segment is a bit old, but I didn't see it submitted or on the front page. It's great to see such views - pinpointed exactly no less - from someone who grew up in the heart of the evangelical movement, and whos father was one of the most influential people of the Christian right.
A good article from today recapping some things: http://blogs.salon.com/0002255/2009/09/25.html - sputnikv, on 09/27/2009, -1/+149"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
- Galileo Galilei - MalarkeyPN, on 09/26/2009, -5/+136Damn, that guy didn't pull any punches. It's good to have a little jolt like that every so often, just to remind me that 1/4 of Americans are insane members of a doomsday cult. It would be nice if there were some way to just snap them out of it. Somehow Mr. Schaeffer escaped.
- Pyehole, on 09/27/2009, -3/+95Dugg for repeated use of the term "village idiot".
- EatingPie, on 09/26/2009, -11/+97Kind of an interesting commentary given Mr. Schaeffer's roots.
His father took on the "non-thinking" Christians, and thought Christianity was ill-equipped to deal with post-modernism. When the drug culture of the 60s introduced the question of reality, how should Christians respond *logically*. His work built logical arguments for the existence of the Christian God. Similarly, today, we have a non-thinking generation that blindly accepts certain things without question. The 6-day creation being one of them. We need another Francis A. Schaeffer,
In a Christian worldview, it is certainly *possible* that Obama is the anti-Christ. Is there *evidence* of this? No. And that's key... with the same rationale, it's certainly *possible* that you or I are the anti-Christ too. The thinking Christian looks for evidence, applies logic, similar to Francis A. Schaeffer. But reactionary rules the day, and that's a sad legacy... a legacy similar to that which Francis A Schaeffer wanted to combat in his time.
-Pie - Maddoktor2, on 09/27/2009, -3/+87Dear Christians,
Proverbs 6:16-19:
These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Love,
God - heliumflash, on 09/27/2009, -3/+82Wow. As a former Republican (and current Democrat-Libertarian) I agree with everything this guy said. Religion has taken the Republican party hostage and won't give it up.
- Propethic, on 09/27/2009, -1/+73I think there actually was a study done about this, something about how dumb people naturally distrust those who seem smarter than they are
- kaosethema, on 09/27/2009, -3/+65''a village cannot reorganize village life to suit the village idiot''
brilliant!! - rocknog, on 09/27/2009, -1/+52I've been saying for years that evangelicals are the greatest threat to Christianity today. And I mean, I'm an atheist, but I do have respect for mainstream Christianity - but these people, with their craziness, are scaring more and more people away from Christianity.
- Zoshchenko, on 09/27/2009, -2/+52I highly recommend Frank Schaeffer's book "Crazy for God." It's an enjoyable, quick read and will open your eyes to the lunacy of the conservative Christian movement. He managed to use his intellect and reason to escape its grasp and shares his unique insights in a way that makes the book impossible to put down. Read it.
- nixr, on 09/27/2009, -1/+51This needs to be repeated over and over again until it starts to take root in the mass consciousness. We as a culture need to be actively removing the far right's influence over our political process. While we're at it we can run those corporate ***** out of Washington as well. There's just one question we need to answer first. How?
/soapbox - algaeturd, on 09/27/2009, -2/+41I've said this many, many times before:
Dumb people like to be led by those who are just as dumb as they are.
Dumb people feel like when intelligent people speak with facts, figures and use science and evidence and citation...that they're being spoken down to.
It's like dealing with dogs....you have to speak on their level and trick them into hearing what you say.
Rush and Glenn Beck can do it because they know who they're dealing with. They want to make money from these people so they pander to them, lead them on with carrots and reinforce exactly what these people want to hear.
There is no logic behind this *****...it's fantasy facts...it's a fairly tale told by idiots who are making money off of the audience left and right simply by telling them what they want to hear. And then they become the messiahs of the ignorant, the stupid and the uneducated.
What a mighty, mighty cross to bear. This isn't going to end well for Glenn Beck, that's for sure. He's painted himself into an intellectual void and created an audience out of the lowest common denominator in the United States. Those people have no allegiance and when the next big thing comes down the pipe, Glenn Beck will be the guy who maybe murdered and raped a girl back in 1990 and nothing else. Oh, and an alcoholic.
Many, republicans sure know how to pick their leaders, right? Rush, Bill'O, Sara Palin, Glenn Beck...a who's who in the dumbest minds America has ever produced with the most offensive personal problems ever....drugs, loofahs, pain pills, teenage pregnancy, public lies, murder (maybe), rape (maybe) that all amount to the most worthless lot in political history. At least back in the day, the evil guys that the right worshipped were almost smart. - Propethic, on 09/27/2009, -1/+40Since when does god give you any rights?
- had3l, on 09/27/2009, -1/+38The problem with homeschooling is when idiots are doing the teaching.
- unknownpoltroon, on 09/27/2009, -4/+41There is 0 evidence for god either.
- ninjaofpatience, on 09/27/2009, -1/+37This is why we can't have nice things!
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 09/27/2009, -2/+37it's not about whom you listen to. it's about your ability to tell truth from fear-mongering b.s.
intelligent people naturally question what they are told and try to prove/disprove it through rational means before reaching their own conclusions. stupid people just say, "baaaaa," and follow the one who shouts loudest the things the the things they want to hear. - richirwin, on 09/27/2009, -1/+35Which explains why evangelicals end up with things like "The Creation Museum" instead of something based in science and fact.
- jayjayjoni, on 09/27/2009, -13/+42What else would you think? They read a book that's based upon *****.
- thejackyl, on 09/27/2009, -2/+30The problem is that when you apply logic to faith you realize that it's illogical.
- HeizeusX, on 09/27/2009, -4/+31Quiet, you'll piss off Zeus!
- thejackyl, on 09/27/2009, -1/+28Did you watch the video? He never said anything resembling that.
- Sucka27, on 09/27/2009, -2/+29I come from a fundamentalist Christian household too. Believe me, the thinking Christian is not smart, because if they are really being objective when "looking for evidence and applying logic" they'd become agnostic.
If you think you know everything, living on a planet that orbits one of 300 billion stars in our galaxy, in a universe with upwards of a trillion galaxies...well let's just say the odds are stacked against you. You don't know *****.
Oh, and this one little planet can't even get it straight. Only a fraction of its religious people agree with you, the rest think you're dead wrong. Oh, and only a fraction of those people are actually even religious. So we have maybe 1/8 of the entire population of a planet orbits one of roughly 300 billion X 1 trillion stars (a ***** huge number) that know it all.
Seriously, drink a beer...smoke some weed...do something bad. If you're altering your life for Christianity you're really just doing it wrong. - Kickerr, on 09/27/2009, -1/+25If Jesus was alive today and fed the multitudes as it says he did in the bible, would his followers of today not call that socialism? Better yet, many, many times he healed the sick.....for free. The very idea....
- secrity, on 09/27/2009, -2/+25It isn't so much that they read a book, it is that they take it seriously.
- rocknog, on 09/27/2009, -2/+25The man is a Christian himself. He wasn't attacking Christianity. What the ***** are you talking about?
- Paulorific, on 09/27/2009, -11/+33God probably does not exist. Just saying.
- Paulorific, on 09/27/2009, -1/+23Especially since many haven't even read the book they say they believe in.
- detcade, on 09/26/2009, -3/+25His Fordliness be praised!
- nmanguy, on 09/27/2009, -1/+23I'm digging you up. All the other atheists are here trying to tell us Christians that we suck, that we are ranting loons, etc. The only non-ranting atheist happens to be the one that at least gives us some respect. I respect that.
- shawnsonium, on 09/27/2009, -0/+22Although not totally the same, the Dunning-Kruger effect might come into play as well. It's the observation that people who are incompetent in a particular field of activity or study will grossly overestimate their skill, or as per Charles Darwin, "Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning-kruger_effect - tava0002, on 09/27/2009, -0/+21I also enjoyed that quote.
- ButterBuddha, on 09/27/2009, -4/+25I like this guy, he's 100% right...he will be shot :(
- oriondr, on 09/27/2009, -2/+23There's a difference betwen being intelligent and being able to parrot things you hear.
- Bartboy919, on 09/27/2009, -4/+23How do you know, Did god tell you? You may wanna get that checked out. Its called Schizophrenia.
- kd1s, on 09/27/2009, -2/+21I don't know. A friend of mine is fairly intelligent but a Rush listener.
He's one who derisively calls Obama the "Messiah" and pretty much takes any opportunity he can to slam Obama.
I think that atent racism is a very big part of it. I remember when his brother announced to the family that he was marrying his Puerto Rican girlfriend it caused quite the stir in that family. - joeditto, on 09/27/2009, -2/+21Thanks for the link...Best article of the Year IMO
- Atario, on 09/27/2009, -0/+18And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. MAT 6:5-6
- inactive, on 09/27/2009, -3/+21You're wrong.
- Marc11, on 09/27/2009, -1/+19"Creator" isn't subject to interpretation?
- seltaeb4, on 09/27/2009, -0/+18It's "inalienable rights," not "unalienable rights."
Now what were you saying about homeschooling? - inactive, on 09/27/2009, -4/+22Homeschooling is too easy to abuse; evangelical parents in particular take advantage of it to stunt their children's intellectual growth.
- arsheroica, on 09/27/2009, -2/+20Great quote;
"When we talk about the Left Behind series of books... what we are really talking about is a group of people who are resentful because they know they have been left behind: by modernity, by science, by education, by art, by literature. The rest of us are getting on with our lives, these people are standing on a hilltop waiting for the end." - huxleyan, on 09/27/2009, -10/+27Evangelicals aren't the problem, only part of it. Ideologues are. People that think they are absolutely correct and no one can sway their opinion. Evangelicals are like that but so are atheists, environmentalists, neo-cons, capitalists and anybody else who is completely CERTAIN that they are correct and the rest of the world is wrong.
Having an opinion is great but not even listening to someone else's point of view because you will never be change your mind is really, really dangerous and intellectually immature. - oriondr, on 09/27/2009, -0/+16"There is no god" <- that is an absolute statement, and it implies that I am certain.
"There probably are not any gods" <- That is a non-absolute, and thus non-certain statement.
Here's the statistics; there are hundreds of current religions, and hundreds of dead religions, going under the assumption that each of them is mutually exclusive, and each has an equal chance of being correct, there is a low probability that xyz sect of christianity is correct. -
