Ignorance Is Strength - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42They might as well go ahead with it. In fact, they should just go ahead and change their name to Republican News - with a new motto, "Telling Conservatives what they want to hear."
I mean, it's not like they don't already censor themselves. The entire company is dedicated to delivering a steady stream of focused conservative opinion under the facade of news.
BTW the + / - rating of this comment is likely a good reading of the ratio of conservatives to liberals here. = P - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40Well, come now, friends! If you're not a terrorist, you've got nothing to hide!
Good Americans sit down, shut up, and do what they're told to do. Don't they?
I've got it! Call it the Ministry of Truth! - jester11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34As much as I am a right-wing zealot and I don't like this.
- rocjoe71, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34As much as I am a left-wing pinko, I agree with you!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29It really isn't about whether or not I have anything to hide, its about basic civil liberties.
We are fighting the same war that was fought 230 years ago, the difference is that this time its the American Government that is the enemy.

- p9s50W5k4GUD2c6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25This is an IDIOTIC suggestion coming from anyone in America - let alone a journalist.
These 2 FOX employees should be tied to a pole in front of CNN and mocked!
Actually - being FIRED would be better. - kp3469, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32i know these were just a couple of talking heads trying to use up airtime, but holy ***** this is still scary. cause you know a bunch of Fox Newsheads heard it and thought, "you know, that's not a bad idea..." SCARY.

- helix400, on 10/12/2007, -11/+28I can't believe it. They really said "Office of Censorhip". Bush is really leading this country towards fascism.
- Sophistifunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16So, that whole "free speech" thing actually means you guys get to hear Bush's speeches, free? Whoda thunk it. Now stop preaching about how much more freedom you have than the rest of the world :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16"Does this hurt our country, or is it newsworthy?"
Morons. This is very simple: CENSORSHIP HURTS OUR COUNTRY.
See also two major parts of the first amendment to the constitution: freedom of speech and the press - Amnesia10, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18The problem is that this came from the Fox Network, who censor the news anyway. They claim to be fair and balanced and are anything but. All this would do is stifle the election debate in the forthcoming elections.
- karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Well, actually, one of them was a Congressman from Arizona. The people of Arizona can fire him.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+143,000 died on 9/11. It was the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history. Out of 300,000,000 people, 3,000 died. Tell me that terrorists are a threat, I dare you! Yes, it was a terrible tragedy, but it's not like they're a serious threat to our country, it's not like they're going to invade the US and take over. No, what we have to fear is our own government, which is slowly taking our freedoms away from us right before our eyes. 3,000 dead is a terrible tragedy, yes, I won't deny it, but what we're talking about here affects the whole nation, if not the whole world.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13jester11, your party has betrayed you
- karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13We're not liberals or conservatives any more. Not on this issue. Those labels have been twisted so badly that nobody can remember what they really mean.
We're all becoming libertarians. (with a small "L") - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Helix:
>You guys make it too easy. "Bush is really leading this country towards fascism." Seriously, what does Bush have to do with two fox news people chatting on TV?
News Corp. is the largest contributor to Ted Stevens, for example, and probably most if not all of the Republican Party. It is an extension of the Republican Party. If you're not sure that's true, notice that Tony Snow was just promoted from Fox News anchor to Bush's Press Secretary.
Bush's cousin called the 2000 election for Bush... in Fox's studio where he's an executive. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Tuba:

When they can tap your phone, monitor your finances, then imprison you without charge or trial.
Hey, I'm fine with them monitoring the bad guys, just clear it with a judge. - jeh0753, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12go watch "Out FOXed" - the whole dam station is republican propoganda - the scary thing is them gaining more control...
- SIDSI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Obey little sheep don't want the terrorist boogie man to get you. Im more scared of our government than the terrorist.
- mrhaines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Canada implemented that type of test in the 1960's...all of the people who failed the test were exported to the United States.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10We are also fighting an enemy which poses very little of a real threat to us. Sure, there will likely be more attacks in the future, but realistically, how much damage can they really do? The primary damage caused by terrorist attacks is psycholgical, not physical. Fear is their aim, not loss of life, and I, for one, refuse to fear them.
Besides, I have much greater things to worry about. I'm much more likely to be killed in a car accident on the way to work, or die of cancer, or even be struck by lightning, than I am to die in a terrorist attack. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I don't think I'd call what that man produces "speech"
unless you follow it up with the word "impediment" - karmakanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Yep. If the Far Right had their way, then we would become "The Land of the Restrained and the Home of the Paranoid".
I keep waiting for the Department of Homeland Security to issue really sharp-looking black uniforms to all of their employees, complete with funky hats and shiny boots. (You think I'm joking, don't you?) - raid517, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@otherland is hardly the smartest cookie in the jar here either. He simply says the same thing in all of his posts over and over and over.
That's not exactly tackling the issues either now is it?
And I'm sure you will find that there are people on all sides of the spectrum with a wide spread of ages here. I don't see many 14 year olds running the Democrat party - and I don't doubt there is anything different here either.
As for Churchill, he was a great war time leader but a piss poor peace time politician - a fact made plain by his many blunders and errors before the war and after it too. Moreover the entire population of the UK is not as you appear to assume 14 years of age - a fact Churchill learned to his cost when the genuine adult population of the country, booted him out hard on his ass just after the war ended. Similarly, the demographic of voters who have voted for Democrat candidates in the past in the USA is also not 14 - as I am sure you will discover with only a cursory examination of the facts. The voting age in America is 18 - and unfortunately most 18 year olds are simply too disinterested in politics even at at that age to care very much about voting at all. So the percentage of people who do care about politics and who do engage regularly in political debates of this nature, is I suspect likely to be significantly older than you assume.
In any case Churchill was an interesting person, he was a man of his times born to lead a nation during a time of great national crisis (although any kind of direct comparison to George W. Bush and his little spat with a few dirt poor Arabs hardly warrants credulity, particularly as Bush would probably be lucky to be granted the privilege of licking Churchill's boots in terms of their relative intellect and greatness). However as great a man as Churchill was, he wasn't a God - and as well as some great things, he said some pretty stupid things too. The above comment you referred to is one of them.
Anyone could use a similar argument to make conservatives appear equally unreasonable. Like for example, it is my contention that some people are able to maintain their sense of idealism and optimism through their lives and are a result of this able to spread hope and encouragement to others, while some people are just born mean, greedy and spiteful and stay mean, greedy and spiteful through all their lives. I will leave you to work out who I think iis the conservative and who is the liberal within this particular analogy.
Moreover it is highly unlikely that Churchill would have been referring to conservatism in quite the same way you mean it. When Churchill refers to 'conservatives' he is almost undoubtedly referring to the old school of conservatives, who were both fiscally responsible and socially progressive. In days gone by (a long time ago now it seems) conservatives were responsible for a lot of good things in the world, like creating the correct climate for innovation, for new science, for progressive industries and for supporting the human rights of black and ethnic minorities. I doubt he would have even recognised the neo fascistic, backwards, anti science, fiscally suicidal, anti libertarian, anti democratic and down right repressive bunch of self serving profiteers that passes itself off as being the current face of conservatism in the USA today. I don't doubt that he would have had no truck with it at all.
So again, if I were you I would be very careful in future both of making erroneous assumptions and of drawing comparisons that are not supported in any way by the facts. Life is a lot less simple and clear cut than a lot of people of your ilk often appear to asume it to be. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8its amazing that its working, i cannot believe it either
- rodbibeau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The American way, in case some of you have forgot is to dig up the truth. We want to be informed. We DO NOT WANT TO BE TOLD WHAT WE CAN OR CANNOT DO. Remember how we don't like China because of no freedom of the press and that whole free speech thing? Remember how back in the day, we didn't like britain because they wouldn't let us do what they want?
For anyone who proposes that we cannot have private individuals (aka not government employees) digging up and reporting the truth, shoot yourself. The government said you could. - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Military secrets should be kept by the military, it shouldn't be the burden of the press when the military doesn't do it's job. If they don't want the press to know something, just don't tell them. Free speech without censorship is one of the freedoms we need to protect, and giving away a freedom without a fight does nothing to protect it.
The government on the other hand, is not the military, and should not be doing things that need to be kept secret. If they don't want bad press for something, then they should be doing it. If the are going to do it anyways, then the need to accept the consequences, which means at the very least, bad press about them.
A lot of this weird public secret stuff comes from politicians trying to run the wars that they get us into. If they feel the need to declare war, they need to learn to give the generals autonomy in running it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You don't like freedom of the press? Then you can leave, simple as that. Many people fought and died for the liberties we enjoy today. Those are the principles upon which this great nation was based. The worst part is you claim to be patriotic.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"...if you aren't a conservative by 30 you don't have a brain." Interesting. Then how do you explain the paradox of George W. Bush?
Seriously, when US conservatism started bearing a eerily-close resemblance to fascism, I dropped my "moderate" tag and re-dubbed myself a liberal. And I'm 39. - Dipsomaniac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You know who gave the media the power they have, right?
It was your very own FOUNDING FATHERS. They saw that having oversight of the government by the media - by an outsider - was a good thing. There's been no 'treason' in the media - that's just a talking-point that the talking heads use because the Bush Admin. doesn't like having their law-breaking exposed. - Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Okay bonchbonchbonch, I read your comment at the top, and I dugg it up because I agreed with a lot of it. But then I scroll down and see the exact same comment with different wording... and then a little below that, yet another comment saying exactly the same thing. You've made your point already, stop spamming.

"Why of course the people don't want war. . . . That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, a parliament or a communist dictatorship . . . the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. . . . All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.
