I don't know what I would have done, the union needed to be saved. Lincoln argued his suspension was due to rebellion. The Civil War was underway, so it seems like a pretty strong argument. The only realistic comparisons to Bush are Nixon, Jackson and Hoover. Even that is an insult to the Nixon, Jackson and Hoover estates.

While I respect the idea that a state can secede, I don't know if could be called rebellion. For example, if CA seceded because it disagrees with the war of terror, would that be rebellious?

So I wouldn't say he was loved by the entire north as it seems nearly 1 in 2 people wanted him gone. And that 45% of the north were voting for McClellan who was running on a peace platform.

- mrsdz50, on 01/27/2008, -1/+1Secession of the southern states wasn't about slavery, it was about the Federal gov't usurping authority the state believed belonged to it ( along with the Fed. gov't dictating economic strangle holds on the south.) Read the Declaration of Independence again - when should a people separate themselves? I Believe we are very likely on the verge of a revolution again.

More important difference: Bush's war didn't have anything to do with saving the country, except maybe in his own head. Sure, Lincoln made some bad decisions, but at least his were justifiable (to a certain degree) - ZenFountain, on 01/26/2008, -2/+1I can see how Bush arrived at the comparison, but it's an extremely crude analogy and a perfect example of the crusader mentality that destroyed his presidency. Few remember Truman for sticking it out in Korea despite extreme unpopularity and loss of life, we remember Eisenhower for getting us out and labeled it the forgotten war.
