Crazies and haters make out as though gay parents will use their adopted children as sex slaves, or pass their homosexuality on to them. These benightedly ignorant arguments assume homosexuality is learned from example, or by initiation in early childhood, which it is not. And the incest taboo effectively neutralizes any erotic attraction except in frankly pathological cases.
If humor is any indication of the realities of the situation, I'd be a lot more worried about incest in the wingnut community, where it rings true enough to have given rise to a whole genre of redneck incest jokes.
Based on what I've seen among people I know, I think gay folks in general make great parents. They have the psychological individuation, self-esteem and courage that it takes to stand up and be themselves in a hostile world. These traits are assets in raising children. And, of all people, they can understand "what it's like to be in society with a shackle on your hand." Evolution has NOT dictated that humans stay in monogamous heterosexual relationships for life. The church has. Even in biblical times, marriage was often defined as being between a man and however many wives he could buy as property.
And even if you could show evidence that pair-bonded heterosexual marriage came about as the result of evolution (you can't), who says evolution is the ultimate arbiter of what's best for modern human children?? Evolution didn't give us clothing, it didn't give us electricity and it didn't give us antibiotics. Are you saying we should do without those as well?
