- futureb, on 10/12/2007, -11/+229Every single day I drive past a sign on the GW Parkway for the "George Bush Center for Intelligence". No joke.
- shawnfassett, on 10/12/2007, -10/+200We are living (again) in the days of Kings and not men.
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -3/+130Yeah, it's named after his dad who was Director at the CIA. Funny joke though.
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -4/+96FTA: "Over the faculty’s opposition, the school will now have “to erect ‘suitable markers‘ noting the college’s new name and include the revised name in all university documents, including catalogues and brochures."
How about a little sign over the toilet? Sounds "suitable" to me. - patch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+73All of the named buildings here at UF have million dollar donors. Getting your name on an entire college here is huge. Why on earth would we want to give Jeb such a honor when it was already made clear that not enough was done to help the University during his office.

When? After he shot someone in the face? - Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -6/+73The Jeb Bush Rectal Cancer Center has a nice ring to it. Nothing says "ass cancer" like a Bush.

in my town george bush drive meets coke street. that is comedy.
google maps link: http://www.google.com/maps?q=George+Bush+Dr+%26+Coke+St,+College+Station,+Texas+77840,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title - greeneyedmama, on 10/12/2007, -5/+67The university faculty voted not to give him an honorary degree. I think they sent a pretty clear message that they are not happy with his leadership, especially when it comes to policies dealing with UF. Doesn't the legislature have better things to do with their time?
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+64"...rename its education department the Jeb Bush School of Education"
...and taco stand. - JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -14/+71checkmate,
You forgot to take your medication today. - Netmindstorm, on 10/12/2007, -7/+54"...rename its education department the Jeb Bush School of Education"
Talk about an oxymoron...okay, just moron(s) - fahrenheitlf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40"Jeb Bush School of Education For Those Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too"
- CandidateZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37This move shows how chummy and in-cahoots these country clubbing state legislators are with the Bush power network. They're willing to degrade and embarrass this institution of learning by forcing such an uncalled for and ridiculous name upon it, childishly taking "revenge" on it for saying no to Jeb? It makes quite clear how little respect the Florida legislature has for education and how cheaply they will throw away its dignity and respectability, doing so only for sake of this Bush's damaged pride. Shameful.
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Ahh, the age old battle:
The Smart Vs. The Vain - LukeSkope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Could you imagine that scenario? Bush 1 VP 80-88, Pres 88-92, Clinton, B. 92-2000, Bush 2 00-08, Clinton, H. 08-12, Bush, J. 12-16.
We'd be talking 36 years dominated by two families. I already have my doubts about American "democracy" but that would be the nail in the coffin. - bongo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33From this article (linked from the submitted article):

"It won't happen at least in Bush's lifetime, though, if the former Republican governor has any say in the matter, according Bush spokeswoman Patricia Levesque.
"While Gov. Bush appreciates the gesture, he believes public service is an honor in and of itself and naming a building, road or program after an elected official will diminish that service," Levesque wrote in an e-mail. "Additionally, the most appropriate time to name something after an elected official is after their passing." "
It's just a stupid statement by the Florida House. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35What's up with the Republicans and renaming everything? Especially airports (Houston and DC)? If a pile of bricks already has a name, leave it alone; take your insecurity somewhere else.
- 1337Einstein, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33@tenlow
My name is George W. Bush, and I approve this message... Tacos Rule! - kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33I like how the article makes a special effort to point out that Black enrollment dropped when they ended race-based admissions, and no longer allowed the race to be seen by admissions department. So, all of a sudden people who aren't qualified academically, are no longer taking the spots of people who ARE qualified, and that's a bad thing???
I'm sorry, but if you're upset that not enough blacks are getting into college, the solution is not to bring the school down to their level, but to bring them up the school's level. - Rivetgeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26enough rumor mongering.

*That* would be priceless. - Sambone67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Hillary's not getting in and no one is going to vote for a guy named Jeb. Especially with the last name Bush. Since you're fortune-telling, I thought I might too.
- Wonkanobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20In related news, the Law School has been named after Alberto Gonzalez.
- dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20@dpb33300
Uh, where do you think the government gets it's money? From you, me, and all the other citizens. I'd be happier if they named it the dpb33300 College of Education. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Jeb built more prisons than schools in florida in his tenure.
IDOLIZE THAT?!! NEVER!! - airwalkery2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18That or they could name a deadly disease after him.
- Maxamegalon2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16They're not forcing the school to him a honorary degree. They're forcing the school to name its College of Education after him.

Reminding me of the Texas university not wanting the G.W.Bush library. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Is there an obscure form of Alzheimers that makes you corrupt? "Jebngeorge Syndrome" has a ring to it...
I mean seriously; have you seen what Jeb's done to the voucher system in Florida? Most of the money goes to religious schools, and several checks were found to be going to "schools" with no physical location beyond a P.O. box. - getjustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10As a person who graduated from UF with a minor in education and who is currently a teacher, I will shiat myself if they name the C. of Ed. after this roaring asshat. He and his brother have done more to corrupt and dismantle education (especially in Florida) than damn near anyone else that comes to mind.
/build schools now or build prisons later
//however, word to Jeb for thinking this idea is not so hot
///rant over - ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11How about "The Jeb Bush Center For Children Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too"?
- iceperson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"What is this 'their level' crap? Assuming white students are better is pretty damn ignorant."
Were you born stupid or do you work at it? He was clearly meaning the black students who didn't meet the standards of the institution but were being accepted for no reason other than their race. - GMorgan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10So you think passing legislation to force a university to be renamed in your honour is a valid use of power and not an abuse at all then.
This is precisely why the state must be treated with suspicion. - hawk0168, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@catalysis
He was the governor of Florida... Now I'm no expert on state government, but I'm FAIRLY sure the governor can veto bills and usually submits a preferred budget to the legislature to vote on. Governor doesn't like funding education leads to education not liking him. - surf314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8As a fellow UF grad I am also displeased, but they kind of lowered the bar when they renamed North - South to Gale Lemerand (sp?) drive just because he donated a huge amount. Plus the name makes it harder to give directions, whenever I try to tell my mom how to get anywhere she is like Gale what now and makes about 5 U-turns.
- Mr2Bits85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Many of you are not familiar with the initiatives Jeb Bush has pushed in Florida for education. My sister is graduating from UF's school of education this semester with her masters and in her five years there has never had a professor that supported Gov. Bush's education policies.
This makes as much sense as renaming a school the Kenneth Lay school of accounting.
UF has a highly ranked education program. I would not be surprised if this knocked the school of education down 100 spots and right out of the rankings. - shortarabguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This is just childish and asinine on the legislature's part... They're ostracizing a center for higher education simply because they wouldn't honor a man who they felt did not help them in their ultimate goal of educating students. The American education system needs a major ethical overhaul before it loses any of its redeeming qualities. Every university has sold its morals at one point to a millionaire with an ego, and that needs to stop before they start auctioning off degrees to the highest bidder.
- RoboRay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The "Jeb Bush School of Edumacation" would be more appropriate.
- evilevil, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@dggeek
or they can just borrow more money from the fed (which is a corporation that can create money out of thin air) thus increasing our debt and raising inflation - aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Just wait After Jeb and Hillary get their two terms, Chelsea Clinton will have a go, as she is running as the incumbent the bush sisters Jenna and Barbara will be running as president and vice president respectively. Then Barbara will run for president after that.
- Drakkor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Bush can't even spell "lieberry" !
- maggiesue0303, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Maybe if he wants a degree so badly...he should go to college. This sounds alot like a sobbing toddler who just got a lollypop even though his mommy said no. Such *****.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The university faculty voted not to give him an honorary degree."
It was just a small committee that voted on the issue, if I remember correctly. Apparently the faculty initially supported giving Jeb Bush the degree but then a group of them voted and decided not to give it to him after all. I could be wrong, but that's what I picked up around campus. - ChanceLonestar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Something tells me the stencil "artists" will find creative ways to make the new name shine!
Shame everyone voted for Buchanan down there else they might have a decent legislature... wait the vote was a fraud?
2+2=5 because we say it is! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha! Some funny comments and suggestions from the crew!
Down here in Texas, they're having a similar problem at the ultra-conservative Southern Methodist University. Over 120 faculty members have signed a petition that they don't want the Bush crime family name displayed on their campus. The downside if a GW Bush Library is created is that The Moron's presidential papers will be under seal as long as an heir says so:
"Although the inclusion of the Bush Foundation is drawing the hottest attention on campus, professional librarians and historians are voicing loud opposition to the proposed presidential library as well. As the result of an under-reported executive order, EO 13233, issued by Bush just two months after the 9/11 attacks, presidential papers are now sealed for as long as a former president, or his or her //heirs// wish to keep them private. In other words, Jenna Bush may now legally prevent the public’s right to have open access to historical documents!"
Academia opposes Bush
