- rawg, on 09/27/2008, -14/+488Obama should have opened with, "Glad you could make it."
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -10/+165What was with the lack of eye contact? McCain couldn't even look at his opponent once and just stared either at his podium or at Jim Lehrer for the entire ninety minutes. I picked up on that within the first ten minutes of the debate, and it came off unprofessional, unpresidential and unauthoritative to me.
I'm not sure whether Obama defied expectations tonight, but he met them, and that's what he needed to do. - evelynvesta, on 09/27/2008, -18/+170I found his eye rolling , smirking, sneering, and screwed up faces not only completely disrespectful of Obama's position, but his humanity as well, and wholly inappropriate for the situation; a real Eddie Haskell display. He reminded me of a fresh, spoiled eight year old. This is statesmen behavior?
Actually, it was all too reminiscent of another "leader"; the mediocre jokester called GW. These guys display their deep seated sense of entitlement and white privilege merely by being the snarky brats they are.
It reminds me of the folks who never look at the help. McCain thinks he's better than Obama. He couldn't be more wrong. - lancert, on 09/27/2008, -8/+142Disclaimer: I'm voting for Obama. With that said, I thought both of them did better than I thought they would. Obama impressed me even more than he normally does and McCain was more clear and articulate than I've ever seen him. But then McCain releases this online commercial totally taking what Obama said out of context and any respect that I had that was creeping back was gone.
This video from the McCain camp is a disgrace:
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/09/26/ ... - Cycline3, on 09/27/2008, -24/+149McCain dropped some names of people and places to distract from the fact the policy he was discussing is failed and far less comprehensive than Obama's. Obama owned him on his home turf - foreign policy and it rocked.
- wukillabee, on 09/27/2008, -8/+90why didnt mccain look obama in the eye?
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -11/+90McCain likes to point his gun at people at shoot it. That's exactly what he's all about. Aggressive and domineering. His whole debate featured polemic about US Patriotism and name dropping and I think he said "We need to cut spending" like 5 times. Barack keep his cool, McCain had that feral look in his eye like he was out for blood. It shows what people have 'conditioned' themselves to expect out of a president, a gruff GIT R DUN good ol boy that wants to save us from the devil. Obama represents logic and a whole new kind of demeanor in a president with composure and well thought out intentions.
McCain also liked to point out "the new president must have to deal with the War that is handed to him", Obama represents the foresight not to leave any one a war to solve. - duckley, on 09/27/2008, -12/+90Debate poll numbers broken down into EIGHT topics:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wup4nsIWe8A - Rushbo2, on 09/27/2008, -19/+91I thought McCain looked like a tired, angry old man. An old man with a bad temper. Obama appeared youthful, vital, knowledgable and, most of all, presidential.
Obama won this debate and he will get the votes of my wife and I. - retzed, on 09/27/2008, -14/+85Obama totally burned McCain on his 'bomb Iran song' comment. McCain can't take the higher road because he bases his campaign on fear and deceit.
- pintomp3, on 09/27/2008, -14/+84"i've got a bracelet too." was priceless.
- aandkh, on 09/27/2008, -17/+86http://drudgereport.com/
Lets get our voice on that poll... - AverageJane2, on 09/27/2008, -11/+77Obama was fair, respectful, cool and level headed -- all the more admirable considering McCain kept using up valuable time slamming him instead of answering the questions put before him.
I would dare to say Obama conducted himself in a manner befitting a President. - tcbishop12, on 09/27/2008, -10/+75FTA: A CBS News instant poll finds:
40% of uncommitted voters who watched the debate tonight thought Barack Obama was the winner. 22% thought John McCain won. 38% saw it as a draw.
68% of these voters think Obama would make the right decision
about the economy. 41% think McCain would.
And even Time's Mark Halperin weighs in with his grades: Obama A-, McCain B-.
Update: CNN's poll has all Obama winning overall, on the economy and on Iraq:
Who Did the Best Job In the Debate?
Obama 51%
McCain 38%
Who Would Better Handle Economy?
Obama 58%
McCain 37%
Who Would Better Handle Iraq?
Obama 52%
McCain 47% - roxgod666, on 09/27/2008, -9/+69I hated how McCain constantly repeated "well senator Obama seems to not undertand..."
I think Obama understood everything and he was the one not making sense - wishninja, on 09/27/2008, -3/+60...and the popular vote. winning the election is a different matter all together.
- hopefuel, on 10/22/2008, -17/+74McCain came across as an arrogant liar.
I'm sure that he refrained from looking at Obama to keep that notorious temper in check. All this 'he doesn't understand' BS failed spectacularly and was just plain rude. And stop the equivocation - he either doesn't understand anything of relevance or he's an elite overeducated fancypants.
Obama was technically sound but came across as too bland imho. He was very polite though. - SolidForce, on 09/27/2008, -8/+58Anyone else notice that McCain never actually looked at Obama? Not once?
- somegeologist, on 09/27/2008, -16/+66Even Fox is reporting Obama win among independents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wup4nsIWe8A
Greta had a odd look on her face, well even odder if you know what I mean. - buddhika86, on 09/27/2008, -0/+46Yes, Totally agreed on the ad. What Obama followed was a general humble practice in any debate. First tell what you agree on very few points and then disagree with most. What McCain did was he didn't say anything that he agrees upon even though there were few. It's a disgrace to debating culture.
- mcgaff23, on 09/27/2008, -3/+44Oh man, that would have been priceless.....a little unprofessional, but I like snark
- mcgaff23, on 09/27/2008, -0/+39Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kennedy is already out of the hospital.....in fact, I think he was out before the debates started - it was only a reaction to medication.
- vegx, on 09/27/2008, -2/+37Senator Kennedy was already released from the hospital in good health and at his home by the time of the debates.
- BlaqReaper, on 09/27/2008, -2/+37The only poll that matters is the one on election day. If people truly want to make a difference, go out and vote.
- TheWorm, on 09/27/2008, -0/+30wtf? They trash him for being classy and admitting that he had a couple good points?
- kelstock, on 09/27/2008, -6/+35link to see the debate in full: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7639075.stm
- Schmapdi, on 09/27/2008, -10/+38Really, I thought it was a tie - no one really scored points big points on the other. It was rather boring as well imo.
Politically - that means Obama won, both because he's ahead in the polls, and because it was McCain's strongest areas. But I hope future debates are more exciting, and more back and forth and less talking point-oriented. - nedzeve, on 09/27/2008, -7/+34http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1 ...
Grading the First Presidential Debate
By Mark Halperin / Oxford, Mississippi Friday, Sep. 26, 2008
Barack Obama and John McCain during their debate at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi.
John McCain: B-
Barack Obama: A- - aben9woaha, on 09/27/2008, -3/+29McCain recited a travelogue.
- Revlution4ever, on 09/27/2008, -5/+31poprocksandsoda, if you think McCain won this debate then you go right ahead and vote for McCain. It's your vote. But I'm not sure you and I saw the same debate.
see how well generic statements work on both sides? - thedsack, on 09/27/2008, -25/+52I am for Ron Paul, and would pick Obama... I see this one as a tie.
- peter3118, on 09/27/2008, -7/+32Al Gore also won the 2000 election (The popular vote) AND the electoral vote...but the electoral vote was stolen in Florida thanks to corrupt Katherine Harris, Florida's Secretary of State at the time, (At the behest of the Bush camp) deliberately tossing out (Technically known as "Voter Purging") the votes of a large chunk of voters likely to vote democrat (Blacks and Hispanics who republicans know overwhelmingly vote democrat). Just Google the phrase "Voter Caging" or "Voter Purging" for a detailed explanation.
- pintomp3, on 09/27/2008, -2/+26mccain just looked angry. he couldn't even bring himself to look at obama.
- TheDHC, on 09/27/2008, -2/+26Internet polls, serious business
- medfreak, on 09/27/2008, -0/+23Yes that irked me a lot. It seemed as though he would not want to look at the devil... I think McCain is still a deep down racist. He grew up and studied in the early 50s when segregation was the norm and black people in army academies was a big no.
- webergolf, on 09/27/2008, -1/+23well when you see things in people's eyes like he sees KGB in Putin's eyes, you may freak out about what you may see......he was probably afraid he'd see a presidential seal
- IllBeBack, on 09/27/2008, -1/+23And Sarah Palin DECLINED NBC's request to participate in the GOP's rebuttal.
Pussies. - zephyrnug, on 09/27/2008, -0/+20Not one time during the debate did McCain look at Obama. Even when asked to by the moderator, he wouldn't speak directly to Obama. Just shows the mans character.
But maybe he can't turn that way because of his POW injuries. - kingfelix, on 09/27/2008, -2/+22Kerry made Bush look like a fool in the 2004 debates, too. It's not over till all the votes are counted. Sometimes, not even then...
- niradg, on 09/27/2008, -9/+27Fudge Druck
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -0/+18McCain was a typical negative republican in the debate. Obama could at least admit that he agreed on some points instead of calling him naive. McCain claims to be bi-partisan? What a joke.
- imgstacke, on 09/27/2008, -1/+19No soldier who dies in service of his Commander in Chief dies in vain = Presidential...
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -1/+18The fact that McCain didn't look at Obama once during the actual debate speaks volumes. Same with Obama trying to engage McCain and address him directly. I don't want my next president talking past people, I want him talking TO people.
- DigitAl56K, on 09/27/2008, -1/+18What annoyed me the most tonight was the emotional speech McCain made at the end of the debate about loving the veterans and taking care of them, and how they knew he'd take care of him.
Just Google for a moment for all the votes McCain has made against funding for support of the veterans. Heck, there are groups of veterans campaigning against him! - charm803, on 09/27/2008, -3/+20I was a Ron Paul supporter myself, but we have to be realistic as who our vote goes to. We know Ron Paul is no longer running, and I wanted to vote Nader, but he won't win.
So, I also choose Obama. - AManWithNoName, on 09/27/2008, -2/+19It's amazing that so many people think McCain won. McCain not only misrepresented Obama's stance on several issues, even when Obama called him out on it (Like the whole little tiff between them about the president meeting directly with Iran as opposed to preparing to talk with them), but at times, outright lied about Obama.
If you believe McCain won, you either are dumb enough to believe McCain's lies, or corrupt enough to not care. - AmericanElitist, on 09/27/2008, -9/+25Obama needs to do more to show Americans just how much his policies and views tap into their current frustrations.
- thefezman, on 09/27/2008, -0/+16I really didn't like his tactic with the "doesn't understand" junk either, he must have said it 20 times during the debate that and the word naive.
Basic brainwashing 101, repeat something enough and the stupid people start to believe it. - mebble, on 09/27/2008, -6/+22Excellent observations.
