- selmer, on 08/20/2008, -22/+116Interesting...kind of reminded me of Kerry and the swift boat guys, although they were way more brutal (and better financed).
To the GOP: What goes around, comes around, bitches... - angeladtao, on 08/20/2008, -10/+89I find it interesting that the last statistics that I read showed that military people were donating to Sen. Obama 6-1 over Sen. McCain. As a retired vet, I can do and say what I want. Active duty military are constrained by military orders not to say anything that would show preference for one candidate or another. However, they can speak with their pocketbooks and their votes. Let's hope that their votes will be successfully counted this election unlike all the fiascoes with mail-in ballots in 2004. There are enough "heroes" of one type or another around these days in the active duty military not to be so impressive to them any more, and it is unseemly behavior to brag about it. These folks aren't fooled by McCain's use of his record as a campaign gimmick.
- USArugula, on 08/20/2008, -15/+82Except the swift boaters lied. Butler sticks to the facts. Entirely different animal.
- TCSavant, on 08/20/2008, -17/+62Frankly, I would be shocked if every American POW voted for McCain. People are different. This isn't news.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -12/+56Swiftboating has become a common term for lying.
Butler was there, and he's telling it like it was.
McCain's attempts to paint himself as a hero for being a failure as a soldier are laughable. - slugicide, on 08/20/2008, -3/+43Skip the AOL blogspam and go to the source:
http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,164859_1,0 ... - pintomp3, on 08/20/2008, -8/+39the irony is that mccain is now using a former swiftboater in his "truth squad"
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/06/30/bud-day-truth/ - brandonchicago, on 08/20/2008, -5/+36The linked article of McCain dismissing a fellow Vietnam veteran is worth a look too. It's amazing how much you can learn about someone's character by just watching them deal with unprepared adversity.
http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/07/10/m ... - suckanucka, on 08/20/2008, -9/+37Yes the GOP is ***** these days... ever since it became an extension of an evangelical christian church.
- frostbyt, on 08/20/2008, -15/+43I don't need a paper to have reasons not to vote for McCain.
- 100 years of more war
- More wars
- Not knowing how to use a computer (Yes that is very important)

"Troops serving abroad have given nearly six times as much money to Obama's presidential campaign as they have to McCain's, the Center for Responsive Politics said."
now stfu and get your own facts that prove otherwise - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -5/+29My god, that was so hard to look up.
Google "military donations to obama".
Rightards can't do research?
Plus that number has been all over the news for weeks. - thetoasterking, on 08/20/2008, -14/+35You all forgot about the fact he is a ***** racist saying
"I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live."
GET BENT McCain ! You racist Bastard ! - theutopian, on 08/20/2008, -4/+24- Cheated on his wife while his wife was recovering from an accident
- Wife has a drug problem
- Violated the Uniformed Code of Conduct when held by the Vietnamese - archiesteel, on 08/20/2008, -2/+22dexter411, did any of these statements come from Obama? No? Well STFU then.
It's a sad thing that the GOP needs to lie to win elections, but I guess that's the new motto of the Republicans: "the End Justifies the Means." - n00ptic, on 08/20/2008, -1/+18Obama's up overall, and up 6-1 with deployed troops. You can work it out for yourself from the public financing data, or you can just go here: http://www.opensecrets.org/news/2008/08/troops-dep ...
- davewashere, on 08/20/2008, -2/+19There are a few differences. For one, the swift boaters were outright lying. Only 1 of the 80 something men who signed a statement saying "we served in Vietnam with John Kerry" actually served in the same unit with John Kerry. Some might call that an issue of semantics, but I think it's deceiving to the point of lying to imply that you served with a person and therefore knew their character when they were really just saying "we served in the same war at the same time as John Kerry". I guess that means my uncles served with John Kerry as well. This Dr. Butler actually knew John McCain from the Naval Academy and he knew him while they were both POWs.
The second difference is that Barack Obama will probably not attempt to exploit this at all. Even if Butler makes a TV ad supporting Obama, the media will probably jump all over Obama and call him anti-American. After a few days he'll be forced to make a statement denouncing the ad. This article, read by the avid readers of Digg, Reddit, and maybe a handful of other sites, is likely as far as this goes. - JekJob, on 08/20/2008, -5/+21Zogby polls are notoriously inaccurate. Obama is ahead in mostly all of the polls, and way ahead in the Intrade prediction markets.
- sodade, on 08/20/2008, -2/+17Actually, it is more like we are *****...
- publiclurker, on 08/20/2008, -4/+18Truth really sucks for you doesn't it?
- VitriolAndAngst, on 08/20/2008, -4/+16How could this be true? 4 out of 5 chickenhawk Republicans tell themselves that the Military likes Republicans more.
/snark - diggit83, on 08/20/2008, -16/+28***** John Mccain
- schneidafunk, on 08/20/2008, -6/+17This guy isn't just another American POW, if you RTFA you'll see they went to the Navy Academy together and "As fortune would have it, John, a First Classman (senior) and his room mate lived directly across the hall from me". In addition, they ended up in the same prison camp! Since Dr. Phillip Butler was caught first, he was there the entire time McCain was there. For those reasons, his opinion should be news and he has plenty of credibility.
- treehugger87, on 08/20/2008, -3/+13Dr. Phillip Butler != Barack Obama
Obama promising a new kind of politics doesn't mean that NO ONE can criticize McCain. - CasualReader, on 08/20/2008, -2/+12"libtard" ??? "hate story"??? Did you actually READ the story???
If you don't have something intelligent to say about the story, calling it stupid names is childish. Or maybe you know something about this POW that deserves these insults. If so, you should support them. - jamesklyne, on 08/20/2008, -5/+15I can dig parts of the excerpt from the last paragraph on the first page of the miltary.com link ...
...
John is not a religious person, but he has taken every opportunity to ally himself with some really obnoxious and crazy fundamentalist ministers lately. I was also disappointed to see him cozy up to Bush because I know he hates that man.
... - frostbyt, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10McCain being old is a problem because old people
- Get sick a lot
- Can't think clearly
- Are slow to react and make focused decisions
Obama being black has no negative recourse. - damndj, on 08/20/2008, -13/+22Cool, one person isn't voting for McCain. We have this in the bag!
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -6/+15Disagreeing with his worldview and not wanting him elected is one thing; wishing him dead is another.
I think most of you will agree that despite his suspect political views, he has done nothing to deserve death.
If you don't like his politics, don't vote for him; but for the love of God, people, don't wish ill on somebody you disagree with. - treehugger87, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2008/08/14/Report_US_m ...
- sodade, on 08/20/2008, -4/+12Personally, I put way more stock in the intrade market than any stupid poll...
- Pigeon, on 08/20/2008, -2/+10Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945). Theres a reason he didn't.. can you figure it out bubsie?
The reason people care? Computers are a part of everyday life in todays society. I wouldn't want a man passing laws about something he has no understanding of.
Ah wait... maybe your being /s - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -3/+11Appropriate since RonPaul supporters write exclusively in crayon.
- CasualReader, on 08/20/2008, -1/+9He seems to be exaggerating (or lying???) about his POW experience. Given that it factors into a lot of his campaigning, this is significant.
If he actually hates Bush, but wants his political support, that says something about "plain talk"
If he cozies up to religious groups that he used to criticize, that is important. - Mejari, on 08/20/2008, -3/+11"You realize Bud Day shared a prison cell with John McCain? He would be the best person to hear the truth from about McCain."
How shocking that someone who could expose McCain's falsehoods is now on his payroll! /s - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -3/+10And by "polls," you mean one poll.
- Whackly, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9Since when did Republicans have a problem with violating another nation's sovereignty? John McCain would follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell.. but not into Pakistan. Nice.
- archiesteel, on 08/20/2008, -4/+11Hint: it was his wife who adopted the non-white kid, and apparently McCain wasn't too happy with it.
And, yes, he is a racist for lumping all Vietnamese in with the "gooks" who held him prisoner. - zeusthemoose, on 08/20/2008, -4/+11"The Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) is a nonpartisan research group based in Washington, D.C. that tracks money in politics, and the effect of money on elections and public policy.[1] Founded in 1983, the nonprofit Center aims to create a more educated voter, an involved citizenry and a more responsive government. CRP’s website OpenSecrets.org has won four Webby Awards (2001, 2002, 2006, 2007) for being the best politics site online. Support for CRP comes from a combination of foundation grants and individual contributions. The Center accepts no contributions from businesses, trade associations or labor unions."

Ah, but you can guarantee that NOOObama will not be responding to this. I love how you guys think that we don't know that you are actually reading our responses. Typical right wing response, run away and hide in the corner when the facts get in your way. - archiesteel, on 08/20/2008, -2/+9Yeah, because computers were commonplace technology back then...
Why do Obama critics all have to be so predictably stupid? - Pigeon, on 08/20/2008, -1/+7Actually I'm a DS/Wii programmer, I know a little bit more than 'jack' about computers. Take that as you will.
I'm actually British so your snide remarks about MSNBC are useless. I know Congress is where the laws are actually passed, but it is still important for the president (and the members of Congress imo) to understand.
So McCain used computers which have no bearing today? Whoop-de-do. Does he understand how the internet works? Why it is important to society and the ecomomy? - archiesteel, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6"I'm not voting for him, hes old" get modded up, yet if some poor sap says "I'm not voting for him, hes black" all hell would break lose. Both comments are the same form of bigotry."
False. There is a higher incidence of dementia among old people - that's just a side effect of aging, and while it doesn't affect everyone, it affects a sizeable portion of the elderly. The percentage also increases the older the person gets.
There is no higher incidence of a condition that would impair judgment among people who have a higher concentration of melanin in their skin, nor does being "more black" have an impact on this.
Also, consider that people are born black or white (or somewhere in between). People aren't born old, but most people eventually become old.
For all these reasons, you cannot compare racism and ageism. It is also legitimate to raise concerns about a candidate's venerable age as it may in fact have an impact on his mental acumen. Now that you know you were wrong, please refrain from making the same erroneous statement again. - Whackly, on 08/20/2008, -4/+10Only if being black is to Obama as being a POW is to McCain...
I don't think it is. - CasualReader, on 08/20/2008, -2/+8If you go back to the time Kerry was being attacked by the Swift Boat group, you will find John McCain attacking the Swift Boat group. Also, saying Kerry "probaby lied" is a copout. Present evidence or shut up.
And what makes Butler "obviously" not a Republican. One can be a Republican and still be disgusted by Bush and some of the extreme religious right.
And finally, is a stint in the military a requirement for the Presidency? How would Reagan fit in? - inactive, on 08/21/2008, -1/+7Is that the same Zogby that was throw around as a "credible" poll when Obama had the upper hand?
Yeah, I thought so. - inactive, on 08/20/2008, -5/+11In other words, you have no other argument but bitching. Thanks for the win.
- winmywii, on 08/20/2008, -3/+8 Certain group != ethnic group
- stinieroo, on 08/20/2008, -1/+6From the complete Op-Ed available at: http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,164859_1,0 ...
"John was offered, and refused, "early release." Many of us were given this offer. It meant speaking out against your country and lying about your treatment to the press. You had to "admit" that the U.S. was criminal and that our treatment was "lenient and humane." So I, like numerous others, refused the offer. This was obviously something none of us could accept. Besides, we were bound by our service regulations, Geneva Conventions and loyalties to refuse early release until all the POW's were released, with the sick and wounded going first." - CSheikh, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Yeah his name is Rev. Jesse Jackson and we all heard about him taking Obamas nuts off a month ago.
- CSheikh, on 08/20/2008, -6/+11All you Pro-McCain People:
The purpose of the article is to show that there are many people with the same military background as McCain but that has no meaning on whether they are qualified to be President of the U.S.
If you want to vote for McCain for his religious policies, economic policies, or foreign policies then all the power to you. However, this article goes to show that just because Obama wasn't a POW does not mean he isn't ready to handle the job as President. Simple as that. -
