- nicktx, on 11/23/2007, -0/+28While this isn't a real secret, I doubt many are aware that cell companies can triangulate the approximate position of any active cell phone at any given time. Turning the phone off might not help you because some handsets can be activated remotely. If you want to be really safe, take out the battery.
I don't know about the specific cases where this surveillance has been granted but courts have rejected such requests without proof of criminal activity in the past. http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6045827.html - laudyms, on 11/23/2007, -2/+14It is only a matter of time until we are required to have (cancer causing) RFID chips implanted just like those in many pets.

Ben Franklin - Lynxplus, on 11/23/2007, -0/+7I'm in your countriez stealing your freedom! The ironic part is i bet some people actually feel safer by this. They think it will stop terrorism or they wouldnt be doing it. To me it's things like this chipping away at our freedom that shows that the terrorist are winning more everyday. What a sad country, I'm moving to Norway....
Govt should serve the people not the other way around. This is Fascism plain and simple. - pimpsallad, on 11/23/2007, -0/+7damn, thats scary
- deltron, on 11/23/2007, -0/+7PONG!
- Look4Truth, on 11/23/2007, -1/+7This must be part of that special new freedom they've been promising us.
- PhonicUK, on 11/23/2007, -0/+5GPS isn't required... Its done by measuring the phones distance (Signal Strength) to 3 or more cell towers, by which you can triangulate someones position.
- thcobbs, on 11/23/2007, -2/+5You're getting dugg down because its a lame-ass joke.
- krawkula, on 11/23/2007, -1/+4Its funny that I get dugg down cause that means people are mad at what I made them watch. But I wish it could be kept up so that more people can get pranked.

- PhonicUK, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Sure, if you're not too fussed about making calls on it either.
- 3tcp, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1did you come up with that joke by yourself!? Is htat you in the video!?! tjhat was the first time I've seen it and it was funny! hey I heard about this thing called lemon party that you might want to use for your next prank. Its a bunch of old gay guys!1!! roflmao also google goatse
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1This is nothing new. I was told by all the executives in a company I helped build out to leave the access to the FBI open all the time. They are supposed to have a warrant to use the access and even then, their commands are supposed to be logged. I was told to turn logging off and to just leave it open for them. This was in 1996-2000 at Pac Bell Wireless, now known as Cingular. All of California and Nevada was open access to the feds and I am sure it still is. Other states were probably open monitoring as well, but I only knew first hand about California and Nevada.
This is not always a bad thing. I helped them track numerous kidnappers and other interesting people like that. I was also given a couple of bloody cell phones once and told to recover the last numbers dialed from them. Who says being a mainframe engineer isn't fun?! lol
I also helped build a script that could help locate people even if they were driving quickly through neighborhoods by effectively pinging the phone and giving back the sectors of the cell sites they were handing off to. I believe that data was eventually ported into something visual, but I left due to working for a bunch of brits that openly hated all Americans. They would page me at 3am to go reset a modem and other crap like that, but I digress... - ch0p57ickz, on 11/23/2007, -1/+2OMG!! did you also know that Feds can also figure out where you are based on where you use your credit cards!? It's a travesty!
Solution: Don't use cell phones, don't use credit cards, don't use your real name, anywhere.. live "off the grid". Not saying I approve of this, but there's no way around it. Even the oldest phones without GPS can be pinged to find out which cell tower it's reporting to, and narrow you down to a 10 mi radius. - toetagger, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stasi
- psyjoniz, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1the timeframe in which that was funny has long since past.
- psyjoniz, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1or receiving them..
- darlyn, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1As long as it's not used to track innocent people, I'm game for this.
/who am I kidding, this is America!! - paker, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Leave it at home.
- inactive, on 11/23/2007, -2/+3Too lame.
- Izult, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1*****
- psyjoniz, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1yeah, because i want "just a piece of metal and plastic" hanging around in my body..
- bentrinh, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1RFID chips meant for use in organisms are passive, meaning they are powered by waves sent out on demand. AKA they only turn on for short periods of time when told to, otherwise it's just a piece of metal and plastic.
- fixedcoma, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1No ***** sherlock! Everyone's cellphone is their RFID chip if they didn't already know it! "wake up, put on a little , wipe the tears ,you wanted too!!!"
- inactive, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I've seen this on NCIS
- Elderon, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1So any ways to avoid this? I mean besides not being a "drug trafficker"? turn off phone and what? Can you put this into some sort of metal mesh cellphone holder, Like a faraday cage to stop them from picking you up?
- fauxXenophanes, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1It doesn't matter if you care, it's used DAILY.
- heystoopid, on 11/23/2007, -1/+1and wraps in foil too !
- faskippy, on 11/24/2007, -0/+0You big, dumb, roll over and spread 'em idiot. There's nothing wrong with our Govt! They NEVER abuse anyone! You can trust them with anything! They would never even THINK of using their power against someone who doesn't deserve it! You're a ***** disgrace.
- KeepItTight, on 11/23/2007, -1/+0This has been going on for a long time. For those who remember the slow chase of OJ Simpson and his friend in the White Bronco prior to his arrest for murder of his wife years ago, the approximate location of OJ was triangulated by the LAPD while he was on his cell phone.
- JusticeAK, on 11/23/2007, -2/+1If you have nothing to hide...... why should you care. /sarcasm

- KeepItTight, on 11/23/2007, -5/+1Yes...It is social engineering at its finest.
- thcobbs, on 11/23/2007, -7/+3"Federal officials are routinely asking courts to order cellphone companies to furnish real-time tracking data so they can pinpoint the whereabouts of drug traffickers, fugitives and other criminal suspects, according to judges and industry lawyers,"
So, they are still getting court orders to do so.
"In some cases, judges have granted the requests without requiring the government to demonstrate that there is probable cause to believe that a crime is taking place or that the inquiry will yield evidence of a crime."
So, because some judges aren't doing their job, there's a "big bad government" privacy scare being drummed up by the Anti-Establishment(possibly even Anti-USA) crowd on digg. Color me surprised. - timjim31, on 11/23/2007, -5/+1sensationalism at its finest
- YouKnowHim, on 11/23/2007, -6/+1uhmmm dont get a phone with gps, get an old one if you are worried
- krawkula, on 11/23/2007, -19/+5Its easier than that, try it out.
