- novaculus, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2FTA: "Obama's openness early on to meeting Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, without preconditions has given way to equivocation."
First he reveals both a willingness to pander and a stunning ignorance and naivete by making foolish statements about meeting with tyrants, fanatics, and our enemies without preconditions. It is touchy-feely, everybody's-beautiful-in-his-own-way, can't-we-all-just-get-along nonsense that plays so well to factions on the Left that despise their own country or refuse to admit that evil and dangerous enemies exist, or both. In reality he would give these evil and dangerous men legitimacy they do not deserve and presently do not have. (His foolish remarks have already undercut Iranian opposition to Acmehandjob and strengthened that fanatic's position by making it appear that his vile racism and threats have earned him enough fear and/or respect for an American President to come calling.) Now he will not admit his foolish error, and instead equivocates, pretending he did not say that which he most clearly did.
The entire episode reflects badly on his qualifications and his character. As another commentator has noted, he has already done significant damage, and he is not yet president, only a candidate. How much damage can he do if elected?
