- JenniferInMO, on 09/24/2008, -2/+68The fact that McCain jumped to criticize Obama on the current crisis rather than work to resolve the issue is telling. The fact that McCain's ad is full of lies (again) in an attempt to take advantage of our economic crisis for his own benefit is disgusting.
McCain's move to try to slip out of the debate and go back to Washington has nothing to do with trying to solve the crisis we are facing and everything to do with grandstanding. After flailing around all week, shooting his mouth of with hair-trigger responses that he later reversed or that have now been universally disregarded as irresponsible and after publicizing his ignorance of economics generally he is rushing to Washington to involve himself in a public debate on Capitol Hill. This after he has been the most absent member of the Senate, after 26 years of not showing interest or even showing up for debates on economic bills and after his campaign has come under intense public scrutiny for being run by the very people who caused the crisis ... and being caught lying about it.
Obama has refrained from going to Washington for fear of having the serious debate over how to resolve the crisis turn into a political circus. Instead, Obama has consulted with the foremost economists, CEOs, foreign SEC chairmen and Treasury Secretaries (both Republican and Democrat), and last week put together a well thought-out proposal to address bailout request. He has been in constant communication with members of Congress in both political parties and working behind the scenes of the press to reach a reasonable resolution to the crisis.
A NO BRAINER:
Let's get the comments rolling:
Which candidate do you think cares more about resolving the crisis?
Which candidate do you think is using this crisis for his own selfish political benefit?
Which candidate is better suited to lead our country out of this crisis and out of all of the troubles?
If you say McCain, tell me why. - SurryElle, on 09/24/2008, -4/+65I really can't believe him - it's absolutely deplorable
- trickstertales, on 09/24/2008, -0/+43It's obvious that McCain lies--blatantly and even when confronted continues to; the issue that concerns me are the number of people that he is reaching and convincing with his lies given that mainstream media is basically corporate owned and give to his election bid. He has swamped the airwaves, few bother to check the facts, and human nature being what it is, the more something gets repeated, the more people assume it's the truth even though no backup is ever given (brain research, psychological research, educational research all back this up), especially when it involves playing on people's fear, panic, and anger. Repetition is a powerful tool; the problem is in combating it. So rather than simply repeating here that McCain is a liar, I hope all of you are talking to friends, undecideds, blogging, sending skeptics to factcheck, and otherwise getting the word out. Thanks.
- psy333che, on 09/24/2008, -0/+40 This is another LIE from McCain/Palin they repeat their lies and copy what they can from Obama I cannot believe they think their people are that stupid..maybe they are if they cannot check what is the truth and what is a LIE

Keeping Quiet?
September 24, 2008
A McCain-Palin ad claims Obama has been "mum" on the economic crisis. That's false.
Summary
A new McCain-Palin ad says that "McCain and his congressional allies led" on the financial crisis while Obama was "mum." That's simply not true:
* Obama has in fact made several statements about the crisis on Wall Street in recent days, delivering his most specific remarks on how government regulations should be changed on Sept. 22, a day before this ad was released.
* McCain gave his most detailed speech on a response to the crisis on Sept. 19, a few days before Obama did. Obama, however, had been pushing for what he called a “21st century regulatory system” back in March.
* The "mum" quote is from a Sept. 20 Washington Times story, which went on to say Obama did "not to divulge details of his recovery plan ... fearing it would stir Wall Street jitters." The ad falsely says that Obama stayed quiet because "no one knows what to do."
* The ad ends by saying: "More taxes. No leadership. A risk your family can’t afford." Actually, most "families" would pay less taxes under Obama's tax plan. An independent analysis shows 95.5 percent of households with children would get a tax cut under his tax proposals.
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/keeping_qu ... - Hillsfar, on 09/24/2008, -0/+40Everyone who's been watching the news has seen Obama giving his speeches on the economic crisis. So EVERYONE can see these are McCain campaign lies that John McCain approves of ("I'm John McCain and I approve this message.")
So, you Republicans on Digg... You wanna try digging the truth about LIAR MCCAIN down? You'll make Baby Jesus cry if you do! C'mon, WWJD. - cg4et, on 09/24/2008, -2/+34The facts are irrelevant to the Republicans. Their only hope is that the American people will be as stupid as the McCain campaign apparently believes they are.

- jodimcmullen, on 09/25/2008, -0/+16I think all the lies are the reason he's trying to cancel the debates, Obama will call him out on them.
- bongfarmer, on 09/25/2008, -0/+14links?
also, thanks for those thoughtful insights, I'm glad to see you can repeat what you've been told to think - JenniferInMO, on 09/24/2008, -0/+14Typo above - "foreign SEC chairmen" = "Former SEC chairmen"
- jasoninoakland, on 09/25/2008, -1/+15Don't even bother doing any fact-checking anymore. Start with the assumption that the McCain ad is a lie, and point to his 0% track record of telling the truth.
- bitfreak, on 09/25/2008, -2/+15There's more to this. Sen. Dodd said last night on television he has not spoken to Sen. McCain ONE TIME about this plan, or what's happening. He also said Obama has been on the phone with Dodd and Paulson and a number of other people, several times a day, assisting remotely and staying up to date.
McCain is full of *****, this is a ploy. The facts DO NOT match the story he's made up. He wasn't even going back to Washington until today. His calendar is free other than the 1 hour meeting that Bush helped him out with. He is not on the committee, and has never been briefed by the authors of the plan. - jericho4119, on 09/24/2008, -0/+13McCain's lies are growing ever more easy to spot and deflate. His campaign is reeling from one bad move after another and he is watching his standing in the polls recede further and further behind.
Believe me, the Obama campaign is getting people to:
Call.
Canvass.
and
Communicate across every henhouse, hothouse and outhouse in the land. - wooderson23, on 09/25/2008, -0/+13You know it doesn't matter whether you're a republican or a democrat, ENOUGH with all of this lying. I know both sides have ads that don't perfectly represent each others health care plans or tax plans. While there is no excuse for those either, it is the ones like this that really get me angry. Don't tell me that Obama voted for sex ed for kindergartners when it's really part of a broader plan that would include age appropriate education that would mean stranger danger in the case of the young ones. Don't have Sarah Palin tell me she didn't support the bridge to nowhere when she very vocally supported while campaigning for gov. Those are flat out lies where there is no wiggle room for alternate interpretation differences or out of context remarks. The McCain campaign veered off the road of decency long ago and they are spiraling out of control now. It started with me disagreeing with some of his policies and now I just can't f'ing stand the guy period. Sold his soul for the presidency. Hard to respect that.
- thepoliticalcat, on 09/25/2008, -1/+13He's got nothing. Nothing but lies, slander, defamation, character attacks, personal attacks, and straight-out plain as the stain on his Depends *****. Run away, run away, little chicken. Lie and run, that's all McCain't can do.

You can e-mail, you can blog, you can write LTEs, you can talk to your friends and family (and have them talk to their friends etc.) Hell, print up a fact sheet to copy and pass around.
You have the power. Use it! - niradg, on 09/25/2008, -1/+13In retrospect, this ad must have been made after McCain decided that he was going to "suspend his campaign" to "help solve the financial crisis" (nevermind that he's not on the relevant committee and not in the majority party and that nobody asked for his help).

“Look, we couldn’t get the ‘bridge to nowhere’ out, although we tried. … Yeah, the pork barrel project, $233 million bridge in Alaska to an island with 50 people on it. She, as governor, stood up and said, we don’t need it, and if we need it, we’ll pay for it ourselves.” [Fox News, 8/31/08]
“You know, I tried to stop the $233 million bridge to nowhere in Alaska. She got it done! She stopped it! (Cheers, applause.) You know what she said? She said, we don’t need that money from Washington. If we’re going to need a bridge, we’ll build it ourselves. That’s Governor Sarah Palin!” [Rally in O’Fallon, MO, 8/31/08]

“I told the Congress ‘thanks, but no thanks,’ for that Bridge to Nowhere.” [GOP Convention, 9/3/08]
“And as the senator said, I told the Congress thanks but no thanks for that bridge to nowhere. If our state wanted to build a bridge, we would build it ourselves.” [Rally in O’Fallon, MO, 8/31/08]
“And I championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. In fact, I told Congress — I told Congress, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’ on that bridge to nowhere.” [Nomination speech, 8/29/08]
CAMPAIGN ADS
“She stopped the Bridge to Nowhere.” [9/8/08]
CAMPAIGN SURROGATES
Carly Fiorina: “The facts are that Sarah Palin rejected the money for the bridge to nowhere.” [ABC’s This Week, 9/14/08]
Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA): “I think the proof, the proof is in the pudding, and the fact is Sarah Palin, when she was governor of Alaska, rejected the monies that came from Washington to construct the Bridge to Nowhere. She has said repeatedly that Alaska did not need that money, did not that bridge, and if they ever need that bridge, they will build it themselves.” [MSNBC, 9/12/08]
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK): “Here’s the point to take away: The ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ in Alaska got killed because of Sarah Palin.” [The Politico, 9/10/08]
McCain Campaign Memo: “Governor Palin consistently opposed the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ once she was in office and officially stopped it.” [McCain Campaign Memo, 9/10/08]
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC): “Mrs. Palin also killed the infamous Bridge to Nowhere in her own state.” [Wall Street Journal, 9/10/08]
“She did tell Uncle Sam that we could keep our money on that Bridge to Nowhere even though the money ultimately ended up in Alaska.” [Fox News, 9/10/08]
Spokesman Mike Duhaime: “She killed it. There’s no — that is an indisputable fact.” [MSNBC, 9/9/08]
Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty: “Every action she took once elected as governor, officially, her budgets, her comments, her legislative proposals all were in the direction of killing the project. So, any action she took as governor was to kill the project.” [MSNBC, 9/9/08]
Palin Spokesman Ben Porritt: “Governor Palin killed the bridge to nowhere, period.” [Christian Science Monitor, 9/8/08]
Spokesman Tucker Bounds: “And she was the one that drove the nail in the coffin that killed the Bridge to Nowhere.” [MSNBC, 9/8/08]
Spokesman Brian Rogers: “After taking office and examining the project closely, Governor Palin consistently opposed funding the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ and ultimately canceled the wasteful project.” [Memo, 9/8/08]
Campaign Manager Rick Davis: “Congress didn’t beat back the ‘bridge to nowhere.’ … That funding was in the grant, and she said, ‘I’m not spending that money.’ And what they did — they took a $500 million bridge and she turned it into a $2 million ferry. And that’s what she did on her own without any help from anybody else.” [Fox News Sunday, 9/7/08]
Cindy McCain: “My husband always wanted someone that would think like he did, in terms of approaching the issues in a tough way and not afraid to say to you, ‘No, we don’t want that Bridge to Nowhere. We’ll pay for it if we want it.’” [The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, 9/3/08]
Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL): “Everyone wants to be more introduced to this fantastic governor who gets up to go moose hunting, who defeated a legend in her own party to become the governor of that state, who’s taken on wasteful Washington spending and told Washington what they could do with their Bridge to Nowhere.” [MSNBC, 9/3/08]
Senior Adviser Nancy Pfotenhauer: “In Washington, Mr. McCain spoke out against the ‘Bridge to Nowhere,’ a $400 million waste of the taxpayers’ money that led to an island with a few dozen residents. In Juneau, Alaska, Ms. Palin made sure the bridge went nowhere, canceling the earmark.” [Wall Street Journal, 9/2/08]
Pfotenhauer: “She refused the $400 million bridge to nowhere that people like Senator Obama and Senator Biden, you know, supported.” [CNN, 8/31/08]
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC): “She has done things that Barack Obama would never dream of. To go in her state and say, I’m not going to build a bridge to nowhere.” [ABC’s This Week, 8/31/08]
Spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker: “She vetoed the bridge to nowhere earmark.” [8/30/08]
Hazelbaker: “Gov. Palin has spent her time in office shaking up government in Alaska and actually achieving results — whether it’s taking on corruption, passing ethics reform or stopping wasteful spending and the ‘bridge to nowhere.’” [Chicago Tribune, 8/30/08] - DFutureIsNow, on 09/25/2008, -1/+8McCain is a chicken he is afraid to debate Barack Obama on the issues and needs a "time out". I wonder if Barack Obama brings donuts and coffee to the debate McCain will show up, maybe even a few pillows to make John McCain comfortable. What Wall Street Should Be Required to Do, to Get A Blank Check From Taxpayers
The frame has been set, the dye cast. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, presumably representing the Bush administration but indirectly representing Wall Street, and Fed Chief Ben Bernanke, want a blank check from Congress for $700 billion or possibly a trillion dollars or more to take bad debt off Wall Street’s balance sheets. Never before in the history of American capitalism has so much been asked of so many for (at least in the first instance) so few.
Put yourself in the shoes of a member of Congress, including our two presidential candidates. The Treasury Secretary and Fed Chair have told you this is necessary to save the economy. If you don’t agree, you risk a meltdown of the entire global financial system. Your own constituents’ savings could go down with it. An election is six weeks away. Besides, in the last two days of trading, since rumors spread that the Treasury and the Fed were planning something of this sort, stock prices revived.
Now – quick -- what do you do? You have no choice but to say yes.
But you might also set some conditions on Wall Street.
The public doesn’t like a blank check. They think this whole bailout idea is nuts. They see fat cats on Wall Street who have raked in zillions for years, now extorting in effect $2,000 to $5,000 from every American family to make up for their own nonfeasance, malfeasance, greed, and just plain stupidity. Wall Street’s request for a blank check comes at the same time most of the public is worried about their jobs and declining wages, and having enough money to pay for gas and food and health insurance, meet their car payments and mortgage payments, and save for their retirement and childrens’ college education. And so the public is asking: Why should Wall Street get bailed out by me when I’m getting screwed?
So if you are a member of Congress, you just might be in a position to demand from Wall Street certain conditions in return for the blank check.
My five nominees:
1. The government (i.e. taxpayers) gets an equity stake in every Wall Street financial company proportional to the amount of bad debt that company shoves onto the public. So when and if Wall Street shares rise, taxpayers are rewarded for accepting so much risk.
2. Wall Street executives and directors of Wall Street firms relinquish their current stock options and this year’s other forms of compensation, and agree to future compensation linked to a rolling five-year average of firm profitability. Why should taxpayers feather their already amply-feathered nests?
3. All Wall Street executives immediately cease making campaign contributions to any candidate for public office in this election cycle or next, all Wall Street PACs be closed, and Wall Street lobbyists curtail their activities unless specifically asked for information by policymakers. Why should taxpayers finance Wall Street’s outsized political power – especially when that power is being exercised to get favorable terms from taxpayers?
4. Wall Street firms agree to comply with new regulations over disclosure, capital requirements, conflicts of interest, and market manipulation. The regulations will emerge in ninety days from a bi-partisan working group, to be convened immediately. After all, inadequate regulation and lack of oversight got us into this mess.
5. Wall Street agrees to give bankruptcy judges the authority to modify the terms of primary mortgages, so homeowners have a fighting chance to keep their homes. Why should distressed homeowners lose their homes when Wall Streeters receive taxpayer money that helps them keep their fancy ones?
Wall Streeters may not like these conditions. Well, you should tell them that the public doesn’t like the idea of bailing out Wall Street. So if Wall Street doesn’t accept these conditions, it doesn’t get the blank check.
