FLASHBACK: In 2000, Bush Called Armenian Massacre A ‘Genocidal Campaign'

thinkprogress.org — Today, President Bush announced his opposition to a new congressional resolution labeling the Ottoman massacres of Armenians a “genocide.” Between 1915 and 1923, as many as 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Turks.

  • martinjd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6My grandpa is a full-blooded Armenian who lost multiple members of his immediate family during the genocide. He and some of his siblings were spared by leaving them at an orphanage in Lebanon, after which he came to America and was naturalized. Personally I tend to support Bush - I think he's had a lot of lose-lose situations to preside over, but it does upset me that he'd refuse to acknowledge this genocide because of political pressure from Turkey.

    They shouldn't worry about the Turks, America is very valuable to them. This is a long overdue recognition. If not now? WHEN?
