- Kewlduderules, on 10/10/2007, -7/+84This is really outrageous. I can't believe this man and this congress. How on earth did we end up with this situation. I really do not want to think about an uprising but you know, when I see things like this happening, it makes you question it!!! This is really sad. For goodness sake, we are Americans!!! Not mindless bureaucrats and corporate warmongers.
What has the American Dream turned into when you feel threatened by your own government? Who is to say as I even write this post that it will not be monitored by the government? Hey, they can make the argument that it can be viewed by foreigners so they can track me down. How sad is that.
I think this surveillance is really about monitoring decent and figuring out ways to oppress and repress differing viewpoints especially as it pertains to Afghanistan and Iraq. Dare we find out any other truths our government has been hiding from us and post them on the internet. We could be arrested and jailed. I am so ashamed of this government but nevertheless, always proud to be an American. - PATSCRU, on 10/10/2007, -5/+47It's so funny how everyone's pointing a finger at the Dems for this when only 16 dems voted for the bill, the rest voted against....it's those 16 that tilted the majority.
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/10/2007, -4/+42I thought the whole reason democrats were voted into power was to limit Bush's power. Not INCREASE it..
- backoff34, on 10/10/2007, -5/+38Absolutely ridiculous.
"Those alleged to have assisted our Nation" what utter ***** *****. This nationalism thing makes me sick. When people start putting this symbol of country in front of real statistics. The soldiers died for our COUNTRY, a COUNTRY is more important than a PERSON, or in this case 3600 of them. It is hard for me to imagine someone who would die for this country any more. I have lost almost everything I used to feel about this country. It is not the land of the free any more. It hasn't been for quite some time.
Its just small steps.. Every time one of these things comes up you have people who say "come on guys, its just for calls from the USA to other countries", well of course it is, but how long do you think it will be until its all callers inside? How much can these guys get away with? And you know that when this stuff gets passed through, there is no going back. Nobody will just say "eh, we dont need it any more, lets just drop it".
It is a very dangerous precedent to have companies like this that are in bed with the government spying programs. As bad as Bush is, there will be worse. The fact he has stayed in office, and they refuse to throw him out is invigorating to those that are even farther right. One day in the near future, someone will show up and all of these little things that we thought were so bad in 2007 will be real... and then people will wonder how it happened.
This is it, this is that time. Get ready, because the ***** hasn't even begun to hit the fan. - Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28Nonsense! Absolutely everything is the fault of the entire Democratic party (and their 49/100 senate seats), and the answer is to vote all of the bums out regardless of their individual performance.
/sarcasm - Gadren, on 10/10/2007, -8/+28There's only one solution I can think of: vote against ALL INCUMBENTS. Sounds radical, maybe -- but as long as these corrupt law-makers keep staying in office, the more they can get away with.
I'm a strong supporter of strict term limits for members of Congress, but of course that won't happen as long as those who would make such a change are the ones who benefit from that change not happening. So for the time being I'll vote against all incumbents. - JimXugle, on 10/10/2007, -8/+27-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE-----

-----END PGP MESSAGE----- - Bajeda, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19I hate the two party sytem. People think they are voting for change when in reality its the same *****, different day.
- Ghoztt, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24Democrats FAILED? No they didn't. THIS IS A FARCE PEOPLE! Wake up and realize that the Republicans and Democrats are one and the same. The government is controlled by the Oil corporations, the Military Industrial Complex, Drug corporations and the globalist bankers!
- Bdog2g2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12How about this...
-The chances of dying in a car accident in America is substantially higher than in a terrorist attack, fund more officers to police the roads
-The chances of me dying in an airplane is much greater than a terrorist attack, get on the FAA's ass with all the near misses of late.
-The chances of me dying from some dumbass crook that was let out because of overcrowding jails are far higher than me dying from a terrorist attack, fund more jails.
-The chances of me dying in a bridge collapse are REALLY higher than me dying from a terrorist attack, FUND AMERICA'S Infrastructure.
Basically my chances of dying from the governments inaction on other domestic items is much higher than a terrorist attack.
I want proof that all these so called anit-terrorist measure are working. Just because there hasn't been another attack since 9/11 doesn't mean that this ***** is working. Hell I bought a new car since 9/11, maybe my new car stopped a terrorist attack. - Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Theory: Saying "vote them all out" is not the solution (barring literal full implementation) but instead a symptom of one of the big problems.
The problem? Many citizens are too lazy to to actually single out congresscritters based on specifics, and to then hold them accountable or to give them kudos. Generalized angst is so much easier. - KMye, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12I've just begun rereading "The One Percent Doctrine," excellent book, and was reminded last night of the fact that since FISA was put into place (because of the CIA shamelessly spying on American citizens), of 19k+ requests, only 5 were ever denied. Don't get me wrong, this Bush program is horrible, but it really has never been much better, since the creation of the CIA in the late 1940's...the only purpose FISA ever served was as a rubber stamp. We need to chuck the whole thing and put something that truly protects our privacy into the future in place.
- Hegemon05, on 10/10/2007, -7/+16Democrats have been failing since they won in November, there's a reason that in less than a year their approval ratings are in the low teens.
- addisonmeeks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12America will be far safer if we reduce the chances of a terrorist
attack in one of our cities than if we diminish the civil liberties of our own people. -- Nancy Pelosi (www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/n/nancy_pelosi.html) - EllimistX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8America is more than just the people in it, it's the ideals that we live and die for. Without those civil liberties, there is no America to protect.
- UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Mind giving me your public key so I can read what you posted?
- EllimistX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I didn't get enough time to make my edit, meant to say:
America is more than just the people in it, it's the ideals that we live and die for. Without those civil liberties, there is no America to protect. Sure, lives may be saved, but the founding fathers didn't declare independence to save lives, those were safe in British hands. They declared independence for those civil liberties that no one in any branch of our government seems interested in protecting. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I'll tell you exactly why we keep getting this crap from Congress.
There's an old saying that sums it up:
If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten.
As long as the People keep swallowing the election lies and only voting along Party lines we'll continue to get politicians who are spineless and traitors to their oaths.
People need to start electing people not bought and payed for.
To name a few: Gravel, Kucinich, Paul and some other "third" Party candidates. - BrapAllgood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Or crying for us.

Write them, call them, yell at them. - FredoBerfil, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi did *not* have to allow these votes to happen. They're the ones that schedule votes. They control the floor. They're the Senate and House leaders, remember? They could have filibustered (something the Republicans have been doing an awful lot of lately).
The Democrats have failed the Constitution. - profertel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm very ashamed that my Rep, Ellsworth (D-IN) voted with the republicans
- ATHEISTinHELL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7How are we supposed to catch terrorist with this so called "fourth amendment"? Bush says they hate us for our freedoms and he is trying real hard to make sure that will no longer be a problem.
- fatdog789, on 10/10/2007, -7/+13EVERY ***** REPUBLICAN VOTED FOR THE BILL.
Only 16 Democrats voted for the bill. The Democrats do not have a majority, they have a plurality. (That simply means they have more than the other parties but not more than half of the total body.)
If you want to blame anyone, blame the Republicans who overwhelmingly voted for this bill, this time, and when they were the *majority*. - Soulprint, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7President bush to congress: MOAR!
- addisonmeeks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9Shhhh! Survivor's on...
- Terr01, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Statistics or it didn't happen.
While the ratings (ABC poll) have been falling in general, approval ratings for "Democrats in Congress" are actually higher than Bush or "Republicans in Congress". It's only when people just ask about "Congress" as a lump that it's in the low teens, but that's not what you just wrote when you said "their". - atheinostic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Most Democrats voted AGAINST this. The Blue Dog Democrats are the ones that caved, plus all of the Republicans pretty much. Ron Paul didn't bother to votefor some reason.
If you really think there is no difference between the parties on this issue, I suggest you look at the bills last year that the GOP was trying to pass which legalized the whole warrantless wiretapping "program". The only reason that isn't law now is because of the Democratic Party. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Representative democracy is a sham if the politicians from the get go only go to debates to appeal the maximum breadth of the audience, than to debate their actual intentions.
- minox, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I bet half the people who comment on these stories weren't even born when those things first happened.
- UnstableMind, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Anyone designed a VoIP and PGP integration solution yet? Nope, ok, I'll get on that....

- insanebrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Do you hear that sound ??? it the sound of America going down the drain.
- minox, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7How dare you introduce the truth into this conversation, sir. You may just find out you are Olbermann's Worst Person next week!
- masgrada, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Funny how we've completely given up hope on the *****-hole r'pubs and anything that goes wrong is dems fault because they were supposed to save us.
- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5I should start taking bets on whether 9/11 will come up in any quote that has to do with the taking away of personal freedoms. Heck I should start taking bets on HOW MANY TIMES it will come up.
I recognize that the Democrats are the lone opposition to republicans, but I still don't like that the recent wiretapping bill getting passed is being largely blamed on the Democrats, seeing as it's the President and the Republicans who are the ones pushing it. - BrapAllgood, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3And now you know solidly that there is no difference between the 'sides'.
NWO. - JusticeAK, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
"But the terrorists will use our freedoms against us!!!" - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6Jesus Christ...now crooksandliars.com, instead of copying/pasting excerpts from articles on to their website and spamming Digg to get traffic, now is copying rawstory.com content, which does the same damn thing.

- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Without the demos non of this would be possible, no war in Iraq, no PATRIOT ACT, no REAL ID.
- saigumi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, everyone on digg kept telling me that they would. Or do you not remember all the politico posts from last year?
- Monk22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"because he's too much of an ass to support the nominee of his party"
why would he? they ran a smear campaign against him, and he still won. sounds like he independently said "***** you guys, I'm glad i supported you so you could stab me in the back because i want to be tough on the war." - 0xbadfood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The reason for electing the Democrats in 2006 was that they would put a stop to this. They now have the majority, so as long as they can maintain a unified front, the Republicans can't do any more of this. But they aren't. They're allowing it to happen. The fact that it's 15 of them instead of 50 is of no consequence -- if you're going to vote for a party and the party can't hold together to do what you elected them to do, stop voting for the party. Either find a party that will stick together to stop this nonsense or just stop looking at the branding and start looking at the product. Vote for candidates, not parties. It's idiotic to vote for an anti-civil liberties Democrat instead of a pro-civil liberties Republican just because of the letters next to their names.
- TheSolomon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That's not a good idea either, because then you'll have politicians that will do whatever the hell they want, to hell with the consequences. It seems like the Bush administration's most egregious bending and breaking of the law has come in his second term, which is convenient since he has no chance for a third term. Sometimes the fear of not getting reelected forces politicians into line. Then again, they might do just enough to look good, but actually do nothing substantiative.
- CourtesyFlush, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Now if only the youngsters will read them and learn of their beloved heroes.
Those links aren't from KooksAndLiars or RawSewage, so I doubt they'll bother. - profertel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The way around this is : don't use your phone; don't use your computer, but speak face to face and use other physical hardcopy, non-electronic means to communicate with your compadres. You know, the way our grandparents used to do it.
