- LibertyForever, on 09/21/2008, -9/+37I hope this young citizen gets enough years in the slammer to reflect on what our country is all about: with great freedom comes great responsibility.
- Stevanoski, on 09/22/2008, -13/+27 Let something like this happen at GITMO and I bet the Left would howl. Only terrorists have privacy rights.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -3/+11People saying things like you are the ones howling about Bush invading their privacy. Are you okay with President Bush 'investigating' your email, your post mail, your library book history, your internet history, etc? No matter how public a figure is, they deserve the ability to communicate with friends and relatives in private, they deserve a space that's theirs, and comments like yours shows how scummy liberals really feel about privacy. You want privacy rights for everyone except people who disagree with you.
- youliveinfear, on 09/22/2008, -0/+8they say he'll probably get charged with a misdemeanor. I realize this will leave many of you right wingers sexually frustrated since it ruins the prison rape fantasies you so eloquently describe in every thread on the subject.
- swrostmore, on 09/22/2008, -0/+7More relevant, individuals responsible for invading the privacy of millions of US citizens go free, while an individual citizen responsible for invading the privacy of one government employee feels the full force of the law.
- Navicerts, on 09/22/2008, -3/+10My take on what is occuring...
Mob mentality has taken effect on this one, each person trying to "1-up" the next by offering a more damming description of the actual crime and harsher punishment. You can't defend the kid without getting viciously attacked as being an avid support of what he did (even though, truthfully you think it is wrong but are trying to simply look at the issue in it's original context without all the "hype").
A reasonable punishment IMO = 100 hours of community service + probation from using a computer (unsupervised) for a period of time of a year or so, no need to destroy his life (more than it already has been) with a federal conviction. Of course this will probably get me dugg down along with some thoughless comment about "how terrible this kid is" and "what a crazy leftist" I must be.
We shall see what "the mob" comes up with once it is blow out of context (Comparing this to illegal wire tapping, srsly?). - Olon97, on 09/22/2008, -0/+7And yet people arrested in a car filled with automatic weapons within a few miles of Denver who TELL the police they were planning on assassinating a presidential candidate do not get charged with any crime at all (thanks to Bush appointed "how do you feel about gay marriage" litmus test replacement prosecutor)....
Republican justice at its best. - 80hd, on 09/22/2008, -3/+9Next, can we do some real investigation into Palin's supposed abuse of power on the trooper issue? Why do legal matters only serve the interest of candidates?
- tkstock, on 09/22/2008, -2/+7Pertaining to federal wiretapping:
[The CIA] has done a service to this country and anyone who thinks that [their] actions were malicious and not merely investigative is catching fumes. No damage was done besides to [the individuals] pride and legitimacy as a [American].
When the shoe's on the other foot, it's OK, no doubt. - SupaFupa, on 09/22/2008, -3/+8He should just refuse to cooperate with the investigation. It's becoming too politicized.
- swrostmore, on 09/22/2008, -0/+4"Not every violation of the law is a crime." US Attorney General Mukasey
- wishninja, on 09/22/2008, -2/+5"Whether you agree or disagree with Bush, it was legal"
Why did they need immunity for it if it was legal? - Barbarino, on 09/22/2008, -7/+10Could you imagine if the scenario was reversed. Biden's account gets hacked by the son of a Rep state rep... Wow, it would be on the front of digg 15 times an hour...
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -3/+6Um....you know Palin's a vice presidential candidate under the protection of the Secret Service right? You know this type of activity is viewed as a threat to national security, right? She could have had some sort of detail in her emails about routes she was taking during campaign stops, details about her schedule, details about John McCain's routes and schedule, things purposely kept private but discussed between her and someone she trusts. This is not a private individual he targeted, this is NOT a small crime. He deserves to be hit and hit hard.
- littlequeenie, on 09/22/2008, -1/+4Years in prison to a college kid for computer hacking??? Right, it is wrong, it is against the law - and if he is found guilty then he should gets TONS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE - but prison time???
Oh, and talking about obeying the law - wasn't "First Dude" Palin served a subpoena that he has announced he will ignore? MOST people get thrown into jail for comtempt for ignoring a subpoena. - SillyRabbits, on 09/22/2008, -3/+6Wow, he runs from the FBI when they show up? After having bragged online about hacking into the e-mail of the VP candidate? I'm beginning to see that this guy isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer. His dad, a state senator, must be about ready to strangle him - nothing like helping out dad's career by pulling stunts like this.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3You have access to the screenshots, show me where she's discussing government business. Just one email. If you can't, I guess that proves you're a liar running around harassing conservatives like me because you have nothing better to do. Do you think you're going to harass me into shutting up? I will outlast you, out think you, and if I have to eat right and start exercising to do it, I'll out breathe you. You....willl....not....win. Ever. Everytime you respond it excites me a little bit, I love it. Keep giving everybody something to laugh at you about. You bring humor into my life, I'd miss you if you left.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -2/+4Wow good point, we're talking about threats to national security and in your head hair is one of them. I'm sure no one who knows you is surprised.
Me hitting you hard from behind in a prison cell? You planning on being in prison? Check out thesmokinggun, you'll see there's quite a few Obama supporters getting sent up. I guess you're a criminal just like them. - ileftfark, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3That was in reference to the whole Civil vs. Criminal type of infractions. But, taken out of context, it does make for an effective soundbite.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -4/+6Talk about stupid, if hacking that account did one thing it proved she didn't discuss state matters. Your liberal sunglasses are causing you to see what ain't there again, as usual. Prove she did. The screenshots are still out there, provide one link, just one. If you can't, that shows you're deceitful and no one reading these comments can trust you. Prove you can be trusted.
Secondly, everybody deserves a little privacy. That's the difference between me and you. If this happened to Biden, I'd be upset that someone would try something like that, because it doesn't help anybody. And most other conservatives would feel the same way. But losers like you and your liberal friends rejoice. That's what happens when you operate without any principles or values other then "let's kill the other guy."
The country sees it. People like you are trying to ruin America, but Sarah Palin shows there's still good folks around here, and a lot of them, who won't let you succeed. You hate our country and try to use any backhanded deceitful way to doubletalk your way out of it. To you, liberty is only good for people who agree with you, privacy's value ends when disagreement begins, and the personal respect all men deserve is abolished at the point where politics is born. - RuffRidr, on 09/22/2008, -2/+4I don't care if he gets time or not, but 100 hours of community service is a little light. This needs to be a felony. The sudden loss of rights will hammer home the seriousness of his crime.
- swrostmore, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2Good point - but I see Mukasey's comment as emblematic of a larger pattern of denying accountability, regardless of how he meant it.
- wishninja, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3If he would have found something out we(well at least I) would have been celebrating him as a patriot. However in any case, I would have been advocating that he go to prison for it. Its the very concept of martyrdom.
In the case of torture if you feel it has to be done, go ahead but in no way should it ever be legal. If it saves thousands of lives anyone doing it should have to go to prison.
No way should there have been immunity in the FISA bill. If those companies broke the law even serving their patriotic duty they still need to go to prison. In the past this has been the case that is why we have things like pardons.(not so the president's friends get away with crimes like is the case today)
The law is the law. - Bith8654, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3I feel like your letting your dislike for Palin get in the way of your judgement. Breaking into someone's email is like breaking into their house. Just because it requires hacking skills rather than stealth doesn't mean it isn't just as bad. Endless amounts of personal information can be in emails, just look at what happened to mediadefender. Just because they didn't find anything particularly damning doesn't mean the guy shouldn't be punished for hacking. Again that is like someone breaking into your house but not getting arrested because he didn't steal anything.
- swrostmore, on 09/22/2008, -1/+3Or, as an intellectual giant of the 1960's pointed out, "buy the ticket, take the ride."
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+2So I accuse you of foaming at the mouth one time, and now every response of yours accuses ME of foaming at the mouth? This is why I love it when you respond, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and you're flattering me to death. I might as well talk into a canyon and listen to the echos, it's the same thing as talking to you.
- Waiting2awake, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1OK, America... I keep asking... is THIS enough for you to finally take a stand and see what even ray charles can now...
- Navicerts, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1You don't punish people based off "could haves" - you punish people based off the crime they committed. Let me give you another example. What if some high school kids were caught stealing a road sign for deer crossing (some silly prank), should they all be tried for murder because a deer *could have* jumped in front of someones car and killed them? Do you punish all drunk drivers with murder charges and life because they *could have* killed someone?
You are a prime example of the *I am holier than thou and never make mistakes" mentality I was referring to in my original post. You offer no leeway or forgiveness and at the same time probably think you are "doing Gods will". You *think* you are some type of saint or at minimum a better person than anyone who has made a mistake but you are really just too obtuse to see your own. You are an ass hole sir, but you will never see it through the thick cloud of smug hanging around your head. - Bith8654, on 09/23/2008, -1/+1@waiting: I agree they should be punished too, but we can't just go "well the government did it, so it should be ok" or else we may as well just let people who torture or kidnap off the hook too.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1I am thanking you. McCain should be told about you, he and you could debate on the campaign trail. He'd win in a landslide.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1Please listen to Navicerts, it sounds like he may be able to help you sort through your problems palindeffect. I am being serious here, all kidding aside. He has totally called you out.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -5/+5Whether you agree or disagree with Bush, it was legal, and Congress had a hand in passing these measures. That makes for a big difference between the two.
- Waiting2awake, on 09/22/2008, -2/+2Are you kidding me? What is the difference between what this kid did, and what your telecom companies just had to get absolved of guilt from?
I mean other than who it was too. One side the ruling class.... the other...
What was that you were saying about your country LIBERTYFOREVER?? My god how your head doesn't asplode from the irony I just don't know.. - vroom101, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1Master Foo and the Script Kiddie
http://www.catb.org/esr/writings/unix-koans/script ... (www.catb.org/esr/writings/unix-koans/script-kiddie.html) - littlequeenie, on 09/22/2008, -1/+1Navicerts, I dugg you up on that one.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -3/+2Can you even read Palindeffect? Try again.
By the way, when it comes to that doo of yours, if it is not a national security issue, it is a fashion police issue. Get a haircut then talk to me. When you talk to me, tell me why Sarah Palin is talking about official government business on a private yahoo account. - inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+0I know you are but what am I? LOL! Just tryin to stir up votes for McCain on digg. You should be thanking me...........
- Waiting2awake, on 09/22/2008, -3/+2Bifh.... OK, then if spying on one person gets this kid whatever - What do you think the telecom's, Bush, Cheney, etc, etc, etc should get for doing the exact same thing on 300 million?
- Nathrat, on 09/22/2008, -3/+2because you're un-important, go kill yourself.
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+0Debate McCain on the campaign trail? I bet my Dad can beat up your Dad!
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -4/+3Actually, your parrot hairdo is a threat to national security. Why the hell would Palin have detailed e-mails about her schedule and routes in a private yahoo account? Oh, I forgot that this is the way repubs hide their emails from INVESTIGATORS. She should be using official encrypted e-mail for sensitive material.
Oh look, I forgot to cut and paste your rhetoric to prove my point. Damn!
Maybe this student will get hit hard. Hit hard from behind by you in a prison cell......... - Navicerts, on 09/22/2008, -7/+6In all fairness Bush got off scott free didn't he? This this kid won't...
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -3/+1Ahhhh........stupid ass reverse psychology........sounds even better when you are foaming at the mouth.
Did I accidentally hit a button? Go ahead palindeffect, tell the internet where the bad libertarian touched you....... - ascott9, on 09/22/2008, -6/+4I'm a UT student and just saw this on the news, hilarious.
- stinkybinky, on 09/22/2008, -12/+3come on now man... you can't really be that stupid. she has the potential of being vice president of this great country. she has no privacy. the same way paris hilton doesn't. the same way bill clinton didn't. and you're telling me that you can honestly sit there and not care about the fact that she has disobeyed alaska law by discussing state matters in a private email account, and then deleting said account, either knowingly, which makes her a complete criminal, or unknowingly, which makes her an idiot and subsequently unfit for leadership? scummy liberals? hah. ***** idiot sheep conservative.
- look4alec, on 09/22/2008, -14/+5He has done a service to this country and anyone who thinks that his actions were malicious and not merely investigative is catching fumes. No damage was done besides to her pride and legitimacy as a candidate. Why didn't the FBI raid when my hotmail account got hacked?
