About time someone in the administration starts to take responsibility for their actions.- HaywoodJblome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Taking responsibility and holding them accountable are two different animals.
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4How dare the FBI use the tools that are available!
...
Lets criticize the people who gave them the tools... - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ Haywood - Accountability starts at the top. You can not give the "foot soldiers" responsibility and hold them accountable for their actions if you are not willing to *stand* accountable for your actions.
- Lixie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Did anyone not see this coming?
- jdh24, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The government...abusing its powers? Unheard of!
- jackal27, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Isn't this almost exactly what happened on 24?
- sanman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2In Soviet America, commies protest *you*!
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Isn't this almost exactly what happened on 24?"
That's the first thing I thought of when I read this. - PopcornDave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@trghpy
I hope you just forgot the sarcasm tags there. The tools that are available to law enforcement come with rules. When they break the rules, they deserve to be tried in a court of law for breaking the rules.
Imagine if someone gave you a gun and you went out and shot and killed somebody. Do we go after the person who gave you the gun or do we go after you? Obviously if you're not able to handle a gun in the correct manner we go after the person who gave it to you, otherwise we go after you.
- holzp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Shocked, shocked I say! Who could have foreseen this?
- chopenik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0C'mon guys. We're fighting terrorism. As long as we put that tag on something it automatically makes it ok. Doesn't it?
Just throwing it out there.

- dvfreelancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You can bet if they're admitting this much it's only to try and head off any investigation into anything bigger.
- UnstableMind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They're only admitting it because someone brought it to the media's attention. Make no mistake, they did not volunteer the information. With that said, this guy that is taking responsibility is "nice" to a degree, but he's just a fall guy and the person that was "assigned" to take the blame so as to not "hurt" the image of the laws in place for this mis-hap, but a label it a user error. Everyone that I say anything to regarding something like this thinks I'm being a conspiracy theorist or such, but c'mon, when are people gonna pull their heads out of their asses and see what's going on around them. Again, I say, it is time for an American Revolution...2.0.
- piznut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Right, Mueller is soley responsible for this...let's all pretend that he had some personal interest in these privacy abuses and that this didn't come straight from the top.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Attorney General Alberto Gonzales left open the possibility of pursuing criminal charges against FBI agents or lawyers who improperly used the USA Patriot Act in pursuit of suspected terrorists and spies."
yeah..right. - furryplanet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I sware... It's gonna be like "A Scanner Darkly"!
- baalzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8it is the nature of governments to expand power and authority at the expense of the citizen's freedoms & liberties...
The tree of liberty is watered with the blood of tyrants - Thomas jefferson
Jefferson knows the answer to such abuses of power... - ZZax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I am a college Professor and I am shocked how trusting of the government this generation of college students tend to be. I am not necessarily saying that they should be paranoid or completely cynical that every policy is meant to harm them. However, I think a healthy dose of skepticism or cautiousness over the government's intentions or implementation of things like the Patriot Act is not a bad thing.
- kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@zzax:
I'm surprised you'd say this. If anything, I would've guessed that college students are MORE likely to question the government. If you take a look at the breakdown of people who voted Republican vs Democrat in the 2004 election, you'll find that the people with at least a Bachelor's Degree tend to vote Democrat. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wouldn't imply that those who vote Republican would tend have less than a Bachelor's Degree when so many have high education levels too. Both parties do. I think it's more a reflection of students/youth versus those who are older and working.
- kent1146, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, it's the classic separation of correlation and causality. The statistics show that people with at least a Bachelor's Degree tend to vote Democrat more than Republican. That is a statistic, and a correlation.
The question of WHY this is the case is a totally different subject. This is causality. It could be any number of reasons (mind you, these are all guesses I'm pulling out of my arse):
- Higher education degrees imply intelligence, and smart people vote democrat
- Colleges inject some kind of liberal serum into the cafeteria food, making you vote democrat.
- People with college degrees tend to live near urban areas for the better jobs that require college degrees. People who live near urban areas tend to vote democrat.
Oh, and you are correct... there are plenty of people who vote Republican that have college degrees. Traditionally, doctors, lawyers, and the upper middle-class tend to both have college degrees and vote republican. But I would contest that they are the economic elite in this country, which are far fewer in number than the working middle class. - chopenik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is a reason why this generation is so trusting of their goverment. Anything other then complete obedience would require action and that usually means taking time away from more important things such as.... Sorry I'll finish this later, I just heard that Britany Spears farted. Gotta check that out.

- spyd3rweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5wheres the non-whitewash story of 'The PATROT Act is unconstitutional, and should be abolished immediately'
- ZomZom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The glass half-full is the functional oversight of the Justice Department's Inspector General. DOJ is keen to keep the FBI from being moved to Homeland Security, and is quite motivated to ensure Bureau compliance of restrictions on its ability to encroach on civil liberties.
And to the college professor (no capitalization required, BTW) shocked at how trusting of the government this generation of college students tends to be, I have my doubts about the extension of your suspension of governmental trust in the area of, oh say, health care. - Blitzenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. At the rate they are issuing these letters to give up private information, 1 in 10 adult Americans will have received one by the end of 2007. In the following two years, the number will be somewhere between 1 in 5 and 1 in 3. Ten percent of those will have not been reported. My God! Would it be out of line to say that this might be a problem? I guess I should just wait for my letter now that I said something out loud. :(
- skyfire1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wasn't this in 24? I though that tv was supposed to say good things about our government.
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Maybe now all the fans of Bush realize why everyone else said the Patriot Act was bad and could lead to misuse.
...then again, maybe not. They're fans of Bush, so intelligence hasn't been their strong point ;) - averageAZNguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry but i have to say something or I'll be piss.
Today one of my best friend told me something I hope will never happen to him. My friend is rank number four in my senor high school class, one of the nicest person you will ever find, and a peaceful person. He is also Muslim. As of post, he is official under terrorist watch. His COUSIN'S ENTIRE FAMILY yesterday at 6 AM was arrested for SUSPICION of terrorism. SUSPICION. The government broke into his house and declared the cousin's parents and older siblings will be DEPORTED back to Bangladesh. The cousin, only 12 years, old will be put into foster care. W...T...F! No trial, no reason, no media attention, NO F***ING EXCUSE! I F***ing played Halo with this kid and his family. They are one of the nicest family I ever had the pleasure to meet.
I fear for my friend's life. I fear when I go back to school I might not see him again. I never was a person of politics, but if this (no other words can describe but...) s*** happens again, I swear on my honor, I will help bring down the Patriot Act. - JusticeAK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Gasp, the Patriot act will NEVER be used against american citizens.
- ClosedCaption, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The FBI is just doing what Bush's signing statement said they can do on the Re-authorization of the Patriot Act. That is not tell congress what their doing. Anyone else thing those signing statements are just "business as usual"? If so, please leave the country while the rational forward thinking others try to fix this disaster Bush and Alberto has made it into.
- fixedcoma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They tapped phones to listen for terrorists but the feds started abusing the privelidge and began trying to mess with people that have no terrorist ties. Sometimes all peoplewant is alittleprivacyand be left alone, but if others start to step on their toes over petty bullcrap, then peoplecould start taking their own lives or others.
- chopenik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1......we're *****.
