- fredrated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6All that has been happening to the Republican party recently is just amazing, enough to completely destroy a lesser party. Too bad there isn't an opposition to take advantage of it.
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Just turn off Politics, dude. It's in your preferences.
- cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What does that have to do with Foley?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8See that "Add or Remove Topics" link on the left side of the page? Click that and you'll never have to see any political stories anywhere on digg.
- tsteele93, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hang em high boys. What a hypocrite. The only justice in a case like this is watching his entire life dissolve in front of him. Think on it for just a moment. Imagine working for years and years - most of your adult life - to reach a position of power and respect in the community. This is obviously important to you. Money is probably important too, even though you've never really admitted it, because - after all - you are a "public servant."
Now, your wife may leave you. (Anyone heard any personal info?) Your family has to be ashamed. I mean, imagine your dad was a powerful congressman, and now he's an accused pedophile and resigned-in-disgrace former congressman.
You probably won't be picking up an seats on the board of a public company any time soon.
All the stuff that mattered to you, is gone. And maybe, just maybe, you are going to be in jail. Almost surely you are going to spend a bundle defending yourself from criminal prosecution. Maybe even a juicy civil suit.
Boy, being a Republican and all, maybe those second amendment rights would come in handy right now. You know, just end it all... if you only had the courage.
Either way, while it doesn't make things right, it does balance the scales a little. This guy is ruined and rightly so. You can be gay if you want to be gay. You can talk dirty to people on IM's (if they are of age) if you want to do so. But when you are a married Republican congressman who is representing the party that won't let gay people get married and you are apparently gay yourself and hitting on underage "employees", you are a screwed up individual.
Go away and stay there Mr. Foley. - cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maf54: I want to see you
Teen: Like I said not til feb…then we will go to dinner
Maf54: and then what happens

There's a lot more about masturbating... - Mu99ins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+54 weeks before the elections and our politicians are sitting in the
cesspool, slinging merde at each other, and they want us to vote
for them. Send a message. Vote out those good for nothing
incumbents, regardless of party. If those people are highly
professional politicians, maybe we need new people with a
little less polish. And remember, incumbants have over a
90% re-election rate. That has to stop. - cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Foley himself helped pass a law that makes it illegal to solicit a minor over the internet. The law defines "minor" as anyone under 18.
- cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Wait a minute...the FBI had copies of those emails over a year ago. And now they're just starting the preliminary investigation? WTF?"
The emails were pretty innocuos. It's the IM messages just released Friday that are bad for Foley, bad for the GOP. - cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I understand what you're saying radu -- did he actually solicit. That's a good question.
The act says:
EXPANSION OF DEFINITION OF ``SPECIFIED OFFENSE AGAINST A MINOR' TO INCLUDE ALL OFFENSES BY CHILD PREDATORS.
The term ``specified offense against a minor' means an offense against a minor that involves any of the following:
C) Solicitation to engage in sexual conduct.
D) Use in a sexual performance.
Asking the kid to masturbate may not be solicitation, but is it sexual performance? - thorndike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Unfortunately, Hastert specified that the DOJ was to investigate the IM's that were sent. He specifically did NOT include a request to investigate the emails that he was told about months ago. This way he looks like he is doing something, but removes his culpability from the official investigation.
- tsteele93, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ouch! I was way off on my understanding of Mr. Foley's personal life. My mistake. As you mentioned neuropsychguy, the general point remains intact - everything he wanted to be will probably be taken from him. But my colorful depiction of it is fatally flawed. Huge assumptions on my part and we know what assuming does.
My bad! - ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3When they link the suspicious emails with the sordid IMs, then suddenly prior knowledge of this Foley-*****'s behavior becomes quite scandalous indeed for the Republican leadership. Even if the Dems don't take the house this fall, we'll have a new Speaker. If the Dems do win, then at least it won't be another Scumbag(R).
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3tsteele93, Mr. Foley isn't married. But good point nonetheless.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I found some IM logs here:
http://www.slate.com/id/2150769/entry/2150770/
Pretty dirty, but I don't think it is illegal to talk about masturbation with a minor. While he did hint he is sexually aroused by the kid, he didn't ask him to go have sex together, or cyber with him.. - radu79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Is there any available copy of some of stuff he sent?
Because from an article I read a few days ago, it didn't really seem he was asking children to have sex with him, just asking for their picture and maybe some sexual questions.
Now, I am not defending him or anything, but without more data on the subject I don't think we can make a judgment. - growler1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ nixfu
C'mon, man. Save the Hannity rope-a-dope for people who don't know it.
The main difference between those two conversations? The one you quoted is consensual, not a pervert trying to entice straight young males.
Also, a point you forgot is that Reynolds didn't head a committee on keeping underage kids safe from predators on the net...and a pardon after the fact isn't as bad as a cover-up during the fact. (that is, until you get busted, and then you try to spin it like it's somehow someone else's fault that you've got a Congressional seat occupied by a lunatic pederast)
Bill Clinton isn't relevant in this situation, but the facts of this individual case certainly are. I mean no disrespect to you personally, but the "Clinton Card" is not going to keep the GOP from getting dinged on this one. Most Americans are starting to wish the old fornicating bastard was back in office. - DeadLikeMe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So Hastart will soon say he has weight problems and will be checking himself into a weight reduction clinic and say that because of his focus on food he was unable to address the issues of a pervert from his own party wanting to do the nasty with underage kids.
- fredrated, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I heard the same thing, it was made very specific and constrained to do the least damage to the party and members of congress.
- DeadDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I haven't seen any where other than random posts that say that, I've only seen where he asked them to investage in general Foley ,Congress or anyone who had anything to do with it or had knowledge of it. What is your source?
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It wouldn't be over until after then even if he wasn't in politics. Any investigations of *famous* people take forever.
- puke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The neocons are just trying to link everything bad back to clinton. Some republican has a chair on a Caucus to protect kids and it turns out he likes to ***** them? TIME TO TALK ABOUT CLINTON!
- DeadDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sadly for the FBI ,Hastert asked the Department of Justice to get involved and they'll be investigating Congress and the FBI and anyone else who might have been involved or had knowledge.
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If the mainstream media didn't stop reporting important news, sites like Digg wouldn't have to help get the word out. But the MSM is more interested in telling people what's up with J-Lo than important issues they should know about. This is why virtually every community online is now overflowing with political/news information -- it has noplace else to go.
- ichbinladen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3He's a creepy, Republican (anti-gay? :D), soon-to-be sex offender (with a record) who abused his position as a civil servant to get his deviant rocks off.
Don't even try to diminish the disgusting nature of this pedophilic scum. - Pile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's up on my site.

- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Read the other post on a different thread.
1) It wasn't a full pardon, only partial.
2) He spent 48 months in prison.
3) After the 'pardon' he had to spend another 48 months confined to a half way house.
If anything close to that happens to Foley, good. - akyra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'm sure this investigation won't be complete until after the November elections.
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Definitely my thinking. ***** congress. Let's vote them all out.
- cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Semantics. Bisexual = gay no matter how you slice it.
- cthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nothing new for the Republican party..
http://www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/Republican_Sex_Scandals - donkeyking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You do realize that what he did was not against the law right? The legal age of consent is 16. Now I don't deny he is a sick SOB but he didn't do anything against the law and I also took an unbiased view and it sure seems to me that the kid was sure into it himself and seemed to go along with everything pretty well.
(3) "Child" means a person who has not yet attained the age of 16 years.
§ 22-4108. First degree child sexual abuse.
Whoever, being at least 4 years older than a child, engages in a sexual act with that child or causes that child to engage in a sexual act shall be imprisoned for any term of years or for life and, in addition, may be fined an amount not to exceed $250,000. (May 23, 1995, D.C. Law 10-257, § 207, 42 DCR 53.)
§ 22-4109. Second degree child sexual abuse.
Whoever, being at least 4 years older than a child, engages in sexual contact with that child or causes that child to engage in sexual contact shall be imprisoned for not more than 10 years and, in addition, may be fined in an amount not to exceed
$100,000. (May 23, 1995, D.C. Law 10-257, § 208, 42 DCR 53.) - nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Here's an interesting bit of transcript. This bit involved the Congressman having an explicit IM conversation with a 16 year old with whom he had sexual relations. "M" is the Congressman. "B" is the minor.
M: What you gonna wear?
B: Well, my peach underwear, like you told me to. I was hoping that we could do something really special but I see that's not gonna happen, I guess.
M: I was definitely gonna stick [. . . .] in you.
B: Really?
M: Right in my office. I was gonna [. . . .] too.
B: Really?
M: I was looking forward to it.
B: Yeah, I been thinking about a lot times we had together. We had some really good times.
M: Uh-huh, that summer when I used to [. . . .] you out south in that Riverdale apartment?
Of course THAT WAS Mel Reynolds(D), NOT Mark Foley(R).
And Mel Reynolds(D) got a presidential pardon from Bill Clinton. - corevette, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2this moment brought to you by abc's instant messaging tapping, the media, and the united states of fascism

I may be off topic and not necessarily talking about this topic. I use to read digg what seemed like 24 hours a day but now it is alot less, it seems we have less tech news and more political news. Come on we get enough of this ***** on TV and talk radio I want to read about the wii and the new super fast blow the ***** roof off your house computer. Not George ***** your mother Bush or Congressman ***** your son Foley. I hate the new Political section or rather front page of digg

What is Digg?
