- dremango, on 04/28/2009, -29/+160So if it was only a photo op then why the need not to inform public?
- quirkopatra, on 04/28/2009, -16/+108You know, it would have been sensible to say to New Yorkers something like this, "On Monday, April 27 a movie will be shooting in our city. The movie will involve an airline escorted by fighter jets flying at low altitude over the city. DO NOT PANIC."
That would have been courteous. Instead we some cloak and dagger secrecy ***** about a mission that I don't know how they can justify anyway. - scottknick, on 04/29/2009, -7/+90Nothing about this story makes any sense. The purported reason for it is ludicrous. The FAA's harsh demands of secrecy just seem bizzare. That Bloomberg wasn't informed of it by his own staff seems inexplicable. While it's wishful thinking by the dead-Enders to blame Obama, I wish somebody had a version of this story that was coherent.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -64/+147I'm calling ***** on Obama not knowing about it.
- jstohler, on 04/29/2009, -19/+99You clearly haven't been watching the news -- they've been talking about this nonstop.
- DirtyVicar, on 04/29/2009, -4/+60Hannah Montana, Patrick Swayze, and Carrot Top. It's probably better you don't know any more.
- le0pardess, on 04/28/2009, -20/+73Fear-mongering and confusion, baby...they enjoy it!
- Troika37, on 04/28/2009, -49/+102Why are they hiding the manifest of who was aboard.
Transparency, right O? - Firstdaughter, on 04/29/2009, -23/+71
Can someone please explain to me why this is President Obama's fault? Since he is not an all knowing deity, there is no possible way he can know everything! - JasonCox, on 04/29/2009, -15/+60Yeah, I'm sure the President knows the exact location of every car in his motorcade and plane and helicopter in his fleet. I'm also 100% sure that he personally signs off on every single movement request and has no underlings that do this for him.
/sarcasm - sockpuppets, on 04/29/2009, -22/+66THE THREAD IS FILLED WITH NUTTY DELICIOUSNESS AND PARANOIA!
- LatticeProject, on 04/29/2009, -3/+44The real question is exactly why any segment of our government is being authorized to drop $320,000 in an economic recession on a photo op without the President or Congress having any knowledge whatsoever about it. Is this part of the stimulus?
- novenator, on 04/29/2009, -31/+69Nice to see the first 20 comments on this thread are nutty flavored.
Yawn, wake me when the adults arrive. - dremango, on 04/28/2009, -64/+100More hope and change and media cover up! Wake me up when the media is not run by the KGB!
- DeepProbe, on 04/28/2009, -129/+158As usual the only comparison is if it was Bush, the media would attack non-stop 24/7. With Obama - silence.
- ThaDRD, on 04/29/2009, -4/+32For $60,000, I'd have photoshopped it for them.
- NorthMass, on 04/29/2009, -6/+33Why is a stupid photo op so important that it is necessary to scare the living daylights out of people?
- bellasmom2, on 04/28/2009, -65/+91So everyone knew except the President? Who knew it would be so easy to take his plane and fly around without his knowledge. Of course this is Bush's fault it always is. Maybe the teleprompter knew and that was enough.
- publiclurker, on 04/29/2009, -17/+41Easy, Obama's a black, Muslim, atheist, Antichrist, fascist, communist who's flag pins hate America.
Don't expect anything resembling reason from these cross burning idiots. - aywwts4, on 04/29/2009, -1/+24Of ***** course Air Force One doesn't fly without authorization from the White House, The president needs to be ON THE PLANE for it to BE Air Force 1.
- TD_Birds, on 04/29/2009, -5/+28So happy my tax dollars are being spent on "souvenir" pictures of AF 1, it's not like there's an $800 billion bailout to finance or anything...
- Cowboy1015, on 04/29/2009, -10/+33America, A Nation Of Fear
- USArugula, on 04/29/2009, -11/+34Correct. And yes, even MSNBC.
- AgeofMastery, on 04/29/2009, -1/+23I'm sure the other one was, there's two of them.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/about/air_force_one/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_One - inactive, on 04/29/2009, -5/+25An Army Admiral? You gotta wonder how Bush's Administration found that guy!
- ThaDRD, on 04/29/2009, -3/+23Even with a warning, the whole thing is in bad taste. "You guys are going to do what?"
- humperdinck, on 04/29/2009, -19/+37Yes, because Obama himself was on the phone booking photo ops for his plane.
I don't blame him, nor would I have blamed Bush. - sindex, on 04/29/2009, -2/+19The fact that it was "ordered by the White House Office of Military Affairs so it would have souvenir photos of Air Force One with the Statue of Liberty in the background," and "The cost of the frivolous flight was about $60,000 an hour and that was just for Air Force One. That doesn't include the cost of the two F-16s that came along," should piss people off.
At a time when our economy is crumbling, they spend what likely amounts to $100,000+ to get a photo op for a ***** souvenir?
Photoshop *****, ever heard of it? - JasonCox, on 04/29/2009, -9/+25Honestly? Because the aircraft normally called Air Force One was basically going to be flying circles over the city for around an hour and would have made a pretty easy target.
I see both sides here. This was a pretty dumbass move from the Government and the Military, the city and it's people should have been informed, but then again I can perfectly understand why the Government would want to keep Air Force One's (yes, I know the plane wasn't Air Force One since the President wasn't aboard, but if I call it by any other name, 90% of Digg will have no idea what plane I'm talking about) flightplan a secret. - NorthMass, on 04/29/2009, -1/+17Your idiotic comment made anyone like me who opposes Obama's insane policies look like an idiot.
Buried. - humperdinck, on 04/29/2009, -8/+23The level of stupidity on Digg never ceases to astound me.
- UNDERSTAR, on 04/29/2009, -3/+18***** Dane Cook.
- MightyUpsetter, on 04/29/2009, -14/+29Apart from the fact that its all over the news? You utter cretin.
- enantiodromia, on 04/29/2009, -6/+21silence eh? that's funny, because CNN ran the story all day yesterday.
i know, i know, you don't actually watch many news channels, and just assume you know what they are talking about, but around other people you should use your big boy voice, and not talk about of your behind. - aychseven, on 04/29/2009, -8/+23you guys are nuts. air force one isn't "his ride," it's is just a designation for ANY (airforce) aircraft carrying the president. (marine aircraft are called marine one, navy aircraft are called navy one etc) SAM 28000 and SAM 29000 belong to the DOD. the president just happens to fly on them. he doesn't make decisions on how it is to be used while he's not using it.
that said, white house military office directory louis caldera (the man who made the decision) should be fired. actually i think any excessive use of these aircraft (including photo ops and personal / vacation use) should be either banned or payed for out of the pocket of the person using it (likely the president) - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -31/+46Narsasistic group of *****.
- TheInformer, on 04/29/2009, -15/+30Amazing how Obama never seems to know anything, yet is touted as the Smartest Man to ever be President (tm).
It's one way or the other. Can't have it both ways. Either he had no idea which makes him a buffoon, or he knew and is lying to everyone. - AgeofMastery, on 04/29/2009, -5/+19Just because "The Feds" know about it doesn't mean the president himself does.
- enantiodromia, on 04/29/2009, -8/+22you can always tell the Diggers who have never worked at a large company, when it is obvious that in their minds, no one place could be so busy that the CEO isn't aware of every single thing happening at the company.
do you honestly think the POTUS sits at his desk int he Oval Office, waiting for people to tell him every single thing the Federal Government is doing at the moment? - dstz, on 04/29/2009, -1/+14"You know, it would have been sensible to say to New Yorkers something like this, "On Monday, April 27 a movie will be shooting in our city. The movie will involve an airline escorted by fighter jets flying at low altitude over the city. DO NOT PANIC."
As a kid, when i wanted to do something that i knew wouldn't be allowed, i didn't ask. - twiztidsinz, on 04/29/2009, -10/+23While you can ride in a plane, a plane isn't a "ride"...
He doesn't take it out for a "spin", doesn't take it down to the store.
I don't recall seeing a hangar attached to the White House last time I was in D.C. so it's not like he can look out the window and see if it's there or not. - tpmidd, on 04/29/2009, -9/+22$60,000 per hour. Your tin foil hat is cutting off blood to the brain.
- peters1023, on 04/29/2009, -6/+17meh. Reminds me of a radio program that drove people to suicide because aliens were invading.
- johndavidjack, on 04/28/2009, -13/+24"Why must you all be so partisan? Help Obama squirm out of this for once!"
Obama campaigned on being not-Bush. Why should we help anyone 'squirm' out of anything? I hold all President's accountable.
Right now, Obama needs to get out of his diapers. - ironhide, on 04/29/2009, -20/+31Please tell me why impeachment would have been mentioned.
- yourbrokenoven, on 04/29/2009, -0/+10why are the mighty morphin power rangers so slow to respond to these threats now? rrr!
- HappyScrappy, on 04/29/2009, -12/+22This is the 3rd ***** day they won't stop talking about this. What kind of silence is that?
- beerhound, on 04/29/2009, -0/+10@redhook There are 2 VC-25 aircraft and neither of them is AF1 (as aywwts4 pointed out) unless the president is on board. Otherwise they are just referred to by the call sign SAM xxx. SAM = Special Air Mission. The reports I have seen so far said the DoD requested the photo shoot. If that is the case the only involvement anyone at the white house is likely to have had is when the folks at the 89th Airlift Wing (the folks that maintain and fly the VC-25s) called to check the president's calendar and make sure he wasn't scheduled to fly during the proposed block of time so that the spare aircraft could be taken off of standby status and flown for the photo shoot. The president has way too much on his plate already to be wasting his time dealing with aircraft flight/maintenance scheduling.
- bmac526, on 04/29/2009, -13/+23Whoever knew about this, it was a bad idea. Not 'bad' on the scale of letting people die in New Orleans after Katrina. Or getting involved in a war in Iraq. Or ignoring intelligence that actual terrorists were going to fly airplanes into building....
- NonServium, on 04/29/2009, -11/+21The media sure went after Bush for planning and participating in the 9-11 attacks. It sure went after him for lying to the people about the evidence that Saddam has WMDs. It just wouldn't shut up about his laughing in the faces of people on death row in Texas who asked him for a stay of execution while he was governor. It certainly never shut up about that rape case brought against him that was conveniently silenced when the woman who filed it committed suicide by shooting herself in the head from outside her car (in which she was sitting) from about 20 yards away. Why remember when Bush's AWOL status came up on CBS news? Nobody got fired for leaking that to the public at all!
Wait... there were other things... oh yeah, things that didn't matter! Bush would often get his words confused, and occasionally a person in the media would point it out and then 100 other media people would show that as proof of the anti-Bush media. How could I forget! That media was so mean to Bush! -
