- TheKidd, on 10/19/2007, -1/+2Just remember, you sign this petition and you'll get campaign emails from him going forward. Trust me, I know.
- Innova69, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Imagine that,.. another congressman with a spine? I though that there were only 2 or 3.
Maybe this is finally some good news for the citizens of the United Corporations of America. - tHePeOPle, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3I don't really have a problem with that, considering I'd probably vote for him now.

- grapesofbaath, on 10/20/2007, -1/+29I hate our telecoms. "No congress, we didn't do anything illegal we swear! ....But we're not going to tell you what we did without immunity against charges for the illegal things we didn't do."
- Eljefedeath, on 10/19/2007, -2/+1Hate them if you want, but remember they have been instructed by the White House to not say anything.

- MaximusIGN, on 10/20/2007, -1/+14Wow...There's actually hope that the government isn't totally corrupt, however the pessimist in me says to not hold my breath as Bush finds a way around it.
- Innova69, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3It is a thin slice of hope that there are still a few congressmen who'll do as they think and not as they're paid.

Haven't heard that kind of rant on here for a while. Keep up the good work. Apparently we are the only ones who can wake up the minds of the brainwashed baby-boomers and the generations before.

- fixhist, on 10/19/2007, -1/+6How correctly the information gathering had been ? ?
Good tools used for wrong purpose makes the difference. post facto authorization of wiretaps may not had been an issue,if the intent of users was unbiased and was used in national interest.
While National interest and honesty of the present government is not clear, giving authority for their wrong doing will be like condoning their existing crimes and arming dubious characters like Gonzales with newer weapons to shoot very foundations of human rights. - whalefarmerjohn, on 10/19/2007, -1/+12As a resident of Connecticut and someone who voted for Chris Dodd, thank you.

- Slungsolow, on 10/19/2007, -1/+9from TPMMuckraker (via dailykos)
Tim Starks of Congressional Quarterly reports that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) plans to bring the Senate's surveillance bill up for floor debate in mid-November. That's despite the hold that Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) plans to place on the measure....
The kossaks are asking for calls to Harry Reid's office... eh, why the hell not: 202-224-3542 - thcobbs, on 10/19/2007, -2/+6How is this an exclusive? I've been hearing this for the last week.

- smacksaw, on 10/20/2007, -4/+1I think this is the "MrBabyMan effect"...where we get a story that was made popular 8 hours ago and is closing in on 800 Diggs, yet this one hits the front page. Guys...please. There's only so much room on the front page. You popular users should be able to moderate your own submissions so that the existing one is the one we have and something else that's interesting makes it to the front page.
- xxdesmus, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Great news, glad to see someone has some balls these days.
- Rustbelt, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Is there any industry the Bush White House won't try to give immunity to? Gun makers already have special protection, doctor's have a cap on what they can be sued for (and those insurance payments never did come down), there are restrictions on how class action suits can be filed and now they want a free pass for the telecoms. Well, at least Dodd is doing the right thing.
- Baelorn, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4Contact your representatives and let them know you support Dodd's stance on this issue.
- sigtau66, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4This struck me as funny FTA: "Dodd, who has aggressively courted the liberal blogosphere as part of his Presidential run, was being loudly appealed to by top liberal bloggers today to put a hold on the bill." Since when has it become a "liberal" action to have an elected representative in our government stand up for our rights? Have we come that far in this country that to stand up for the Constitution and the rights of the American people means you're a liberal. And of course being smeared as a liberal gives you all that baggage that people love to hate on. If "liberals" are the only ones who want to retake and retain the freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution, well then sign me up as a liberal.
- Slungsolow, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4since when does being a "conservative" mean creating additional government agencies, fiscal nightmares and constitutional ignorance? The political world done turned it self upside down right around the time Nixon was elected president.
- oldhick, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1I think you are confusing the Bush administration with "Conservative". Its a common mistake. I also enjoy the term "neocon". If you look at the origins of the term, the only thing that still applies to the Bush Admin is the ***** up foreign policy to control the middle east.
- UrbanOne, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Fortunately, Washington, Jefferson, et al, were all "liberals."
- Slungsolow, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4since when does being a "conservative" mean creating additional government agencies, fiscal nightmares and constitutional ignorance? The political world done turned it self upside down right around the time Nixon was elected president.
- chrismok, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5AND as predicted where is this coverage in the MSM? It's 10:00am EDT and I can't find this anywhere on http://news.yahoo.com . You tell me the Media isn't controlled by the Korporate Klowns?
I guess America can no longer "afford" the constitution, since the current goverment has literally bankrupted the country. Bush is guilty of High Crimes and Misdemeanors, along with most of his crony administration. The democratic and republican leadership is just as guilty for allowing this to continue. YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK!
This is no longer a conservative/liberal issue, it's an issue of survival of the basic tenets upon which this country was founded. - w3weasel, on 10/19/2007, -3/+1not an exclusive ; )

That word, it does not mean what you think it means - pfunked, on 10/19/2007, -4/+1Exclusive? Inaccurate
- HappyScrappy, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3They should put a hold on it anyway. It's not like Bush needs the FISA bill anyway. If he doesn't get things granted by Congress, he'll just do them anyway and then claim privilege if either of the other branches tries to call him on it.
- UrbanOne, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3In my opinion, it's bad enough that telcos aided the government in this illegal activity, but that taxpayer money was paid to those very telcos for their participation in this crime, make it even worse. They were not being "patriotic" (however they might ill-define the term,) they were illegally whoring their assets.

Well said. Reminds me of a speech by Ron Silver's character on the West Wing:
"I am tired of working for candidates who make me think I should be embarassed to believe what I believe. We all need some therapy, because somebody came along and said Liberal means soft on crime, soft on drugs, soft on communism, soft on defense, and we’re going to tax you back to the stone age because people shouldn’t have to go to work if they don’t want to."
And instead of saying, “Excuse me, you right wing, reactionary, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-education, anti-choice, pro-gun, Leave It To Beaver-trip back to the ’50s,” we cowered in the corner and said, “Please don’t hurt me.”
No more. I really don’t care who’s right, who’s wrong. We’re both right, we’re both wrong. Let’s have two parties.” - thisrobot, on 10/19/2007, -0/+1Write your Senators about this. You can find out who they are and how to contact them here: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/ ... . Here is what i wrote to mine as an example:
Senator _______,
This message is in regards to the latest FISA bill, and to urge you to oppose this legislation. The bill I am referring too will provide immunity for telecommunication companies who have potentially engaged in widespread illegal domestic wiretapping. While there are many reason why I feel this bill is bad for the United States there is one which I feel is the most powerful.
As a United States Senator you have sworn to uphold the constitution:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.
The Constitution separates the government of the United States into three distinct branches in order to protect the citizens, and the rights of the citizens of the United States. By passing this bill the United States Senate, as of member of the Legislative branch will be directly and willingly going in direct opposition to the Constitution. The issue of the guilt, or innocence of the telecommunications companies in a judicial issue, and requires the due process that only the Judicial branch provides. So please Senator ________, support the efforts to block this bill, uphold your oath to the citizens of the United States, and protect the ideals of the Constitution which has been tread on so indigently in the past few years.
With Hope,

- TwinTurboMike, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Hey all, get in there and show this guy some respect on the "Digg the Candidates" page. He's in LAST place among the Dems! He just did a major service to this country by standing up when others failed to do so. On a similar note, Kucinich with the Impeachment votes, Paul for always voting against unconstitutional bills, Gravel for standing up for the constitution, and others who have made strides in these tough times. Let them hear you. Digg them up!
