- TheEngineer2008, on 02/09/2009, -2/+37The Poker Players Alliance is also fighting for poker rights in Kentucky (where we just won in the Court of Appeals), Pennsylvania (where we just won a case by proving poker is a game of skill), the other 48 states, and at the federal level. Those who would take our rights just because they don't want others to play poker can count on opposition whenever and wherever they try to interfere with our liberty! http://www.joinppa.com
- Feenix566, on 02/09/2009, -2/+29Why should you have to prove that it's a game of skill? It's none of the government's business whether it's skill or chance. It's your money, and you can gamble with it if you want. The government shouldn't be able to tell you what to do with your own money.
- JackpotCity, on 02/09/2009, -2/+17Nice to see a few victories for poker coming through. Let's hope that this situation reaches an agreeable resolution sometime in the near future.
- Fizpez, on 02/09/2009, -2/+12Only someone who has never played a game of poker could claim that it doesnt require any skill. Sure the idiots at the table will win occassional hands - but if you've got more than 4 people playing, the odds of the worst player at the table busting everyone else out is fleetingly small.
Its funny how the same people who have no problem playing Whist, Cribbage or Bridge can claim those games require skill (and a little betting never hurt) but poker does not. - JCH897, on 02/09/2009, -1/+7Especially since there are plenty of slot machines in the U.S.
- hansauph, on 02/09/2009, -2/+7a step in the right direction, finally...
- maxpower2911, on 02/09/2009, -3/+7I have no problem with this... Unless people start calling poker a sport. That's when they leave the real world and start to live in a self glorifying fantasy land.
- shredswithpiks, on 02/09/2009, -1/+5wellfare is a separate problem :(
- Spoomeister, on 02/09/2009, -0/+3Here's hoping the same can come to Washington State. The local tribal casinos rammed through some very thorough state laws preventing any kind of online wagering.
- homah, on 02/09/2009, -1/+4You could replace the word "gamble" in your post with a lot of legal things as well. The fact is some people cannot handle gambling, but most can. You are right, though, the government should not be aiding those who blow all of their money.
- idano, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Hey, they show it in ESPN all the time. Doesn't that make it a sport? /sarcasm
- Feenix566, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2That's why it's a bad idea to give the government the responsibility to take care of you from the cradle to the grave. They'll use it as an excuse to control your entire life, and then they'll fail to take care of you anyway.
- Cerebron, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2If anyone understands how to play Whist, Cribbage, or Bridge, I'll take their word about the skill required for any other card game they play.
- cynicalsarah, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Poker scored sort of another victory in South Carolina too. The judge agreed that poker was a game of skill, but still found some people guilty of running a gambling establishment. Half victory for the game at least.
- MadHarvey, on 02/09/2009, -0/+2Why do people think the word "sport" has some special meaning, like a title of honor for an activity?
Honestly, I wouldn't want people to call Poker a sport because it puts a of game of such beauty, subtlety, and complexity on the same level as Football.
Even though poker certainly fits one of the many definitions of a sport, lets try hold it to a higher standard. - chesterogilvie, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1Woah woah woah there skippy. We got this one and marijuana decriminalization but what about banning the sale of cigarettes in drug stores because they're "not healthy?". But the king-size bag of Snickers is healthfood right? What about trying to collect sales tax from Mass residents who shop in New Hampshire? How about banning indoor smoking in the city and including cigar bars under that ban? What about forcing citizens to have health insurance and imposing fines if they don't? What about making it damn near impossible to be a gun owner? I've lived here all my life so I love the AREA, but the politics SUCKS.
- Mothrog, on 02/09/2009, -1/+2Not to mention state sponsored gambling... aka the lottery.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1@Alpha: Nope I wasn't trying to bother you. My post was just an extension of yours.
Yes I liked to gamble online, yes I was decent enough at it that I didn't lose money. Yes I have problems with the government telling me what I can't do as long as there is no real victim beyond me.
The only bodies that the government is concerned with *fiscally* with these laws are theirs through the loss of taxes on winnings and probably more so the casino lobbyists who feel they can lose BIG bucks to online gambling sites. - cman2020, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Poker is a skill game. Glad that people in power are taking notice of this fact!
- inactive, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Great story, http://www.roomreview.net/play-poker/ read more here.
- whiskeythief, on 02/10/2009, -0/+1Wait, what? Bowling cannot be the only sport that includes drinking beer and smoking cigarettes.
- inactive, on 09/09/2009, -0/+1It is definitely a game of skill. Check out what I submitted and that is just ONE HAND!
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -1/+1I guess we need to make all non-essential items illegal then. Make alcohol, cigarettes etc all against the law.
I sure as hell have seen plenty of losers w/ 3 kids in tow walk out of some random convenient store, kids wearing ***** ass clothes, whining that they didn't get a candy bar, but the parent is opening up their new pack of smokes.
So yeah, if we are going to mandate if I can play poker in my own home, using fiscal responsibility as an argument, the government needs to address the OTHER items that can hinder fiscal responsibility too. - Phonk, on 02/12/2009, -1/+1If it is a game of skill he should approach the dept of education to introduce it to kids curriculum
this guy is a skilled in greed - alpha19, on 02/09/2009, -1/+1@mineame: You suggest these things like it would bother me or something. Go ahead, get rid of cigarettes. Alcohol... no biggie. I can learn to live without it. All this bickering and arguing is two sides. One side wants to put crap in their bodies and doesn't think government can tell them no. The other side doesn't want people to put crap in their bodies because they think it's no good and maybe they're use to living under a stroud of protection and conformity. Thankfully, I'm in the position that either way it goes, it doesn't bother or effect me too much. Except when I have to pay for losers (however they may have come to the point of being a loser) to live when sometimes I can barely pay for myself to live (yay economy).

- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -5/+2No better way for poor people to succeed than online gambling. Yup, that's the ticket.
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -5/+1I have no problem with priss... Bless steeple art falling joker a wart. That's when they reprieve the real world and start to live in an elf-glorifying fantasy land.
- alpha19, on 02/09/2009, -9/+2Except that when you gamble all your money away and can't afford to pay for anything (like food and rent), the government steps in and helps you out (food stamps). Give up that right to government aid, then go do whatever you want with your money. That way I don't have to pay for you being a loser.
