- xatomic, on 10/03/2008, -10/+132Let me honest, back in 2004 I voted for McCain for senate in AZ. I thought He was a (dare I say) "maverick", and I thought he would could be a temper to Bush. But as this impending election cycle began I began to see McCain change. From being a Maverick who stood up for what he believes in I began to see a man pandering to whom he thought would help him get elected. In the past 15 months I have seen him say what ever he wanted to appease the audience. I have seen him speak untruths about his own voting record, talk down on policies that he championed or passed, and down right lie about others he ran against in his own party or not. I see a man who wants to be Voted in just to be voted in, and I think he has lost touch with what it is he is applying for.
- xac00fm, on 10/03/2008, -11/+106Debate: Palin Dodging Questions Jibbering Topics, Twisting Lies...
Palin sounds like a pre pre-programmed robot fresh from boot camp, not focused...
Palin won't answer not one question.. instead she attacks biden and obama with twisted lies...
My nine year old daughter could have done a better job in the debate.. I do not want this woman palin representing me or my Country. - kroses, on 10/03/2008, -13/+96Joe spoke from his heart and knew his subject matter intimately. Sarah spoke from her head and had memorized her lines!
- AnakSeria, on 10/03/2008, -11/+90Did anyone really listen to what Palin was saying?
It was the same level of gibberish in the Couric interviews.
Different words, but the same technique of stringing up a bunch of words to make meaningless sentences.
I therefore challenge ALL those who said Palin stood her ground.
This was actually a VERY pathetic performance. - ugottabejoken, on 10/03/2008, -10/+72Sarah Palin would be a useless vice-president but a great newscaster. She is great at reciting lines in a thoughtless manner.
- hark, on 10/03/2008, -0/+39I don't see what you did there,
- Concern2008, on 10/03/2008, -11/+43Palin came across as a "Stepford candidate" who was programmed to say a series of talking point. On the other hand Biden was articulate, spontaneous, and very real and that’s what the audience saw.
I thought she was very condescending, and had no vision of McCain/Palin ticket would be different than the last 8 years. She must have said “Maverick” at least eight times referring to herself and John McCain. She used the word s of Ronald Reagan a lot and yet she spoke like GW. (I.e. saying nuculuar and being folksy and trying to be likeable).
She did not come across as a statesman, Biden did. She came across as out of her league.
She just wasn’t credible. - Yimyack, on 10/03/2008, -4/+30Cracks me up when people say Palin won the debate. If by 'win' they mean she:
1.) Didn't fall on her face by saying something stupid.
2.) Skirted around the question by answering it with something she wanted to talk about in all her maverickiness.
3.) Jumped around points showing no coherency (and being downright confusing in the process)
4.) Sounded like a hockey mom, not a politician I could take seriously.
5.) They see the little 'shout out' at the end of the debate to be 'cute'.
Then yeah, she was outstanding - inactive, on 10/03/2008, -5/+27 For sure, those who voted for Bush will vote for Palin, shes as bright as a 3 watt light bulb, in a power outage. But I guess "Joe six pack" likes that.
- skatoolaki, on 10/03/2008, -3/+23She did better than I thought she would - which isn't saying all that much. She kept trying to play the "cute, folksy, likeable" and "just like you" cards, which have no place in a serious debate. She dodged questions, looked nervous as all get out at some points, and looked at her notes all too often.
To me, it seemed - as Concern2008 said - she was "out of her league". She just did not seem right or comfortable in the position, and though Palin may be good at small town and suburban state politics, she simply is not ready for the big league. Perhaps some day she might be; I will give her that - but that time is not now.
I did, in the beginning, have such high hopes for her, too. - raydeen, on 10/03/2008, -2/+22Every single goddamn time Palin said she was a 'maverick' I desperately wanted James Garner to step out on stage and slap her silly face off and say "I'm Maverick. And you know nothing of my work!"
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -6/+25Palin lost the minute she came out with a GIANT LAPEL PIN WITH DIAMONDS.
Jebus, wtf... The pin was bigger than her answers. - BXRWXR, on 10/03/2008, -1/+19I don't see what I'm doing here.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -2/+20Your desperation tastes sweet.
- tommyfocus, on 10/03/2008, -1/+16That was my impression as well. She did better than I thought she would, but I still was not impress.
- magus_melchior, on 10/03/2008, -4/+19She only appeared to stand her ground, because Ifill, due to time and format constraints, didn't chase her. But Joe Biden did chase her and pin her down intellectually.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -1/+16He doesn't see what you didn't do there
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -1/+16I knew she had a tanning bed but I didn't realize she did waxing too.
- tdclark23, on 10/03/2008, -2/+16Sometimes I think Republicans like to vote for someone less intelligent than they are to make them feel superior. This time they had to go all the way to Alaska.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -4/+18Palin came across so fake. Anyone with half a brain can see through her winks and soccer mom references. This woman is just a puppet trying to appeal to a certain demographic. It truly scared me to sit there and watch this android speak.
- raydeen, on 10/03/2008, -2/+15What bizarro world debate were you watching? She couldn't give a straight answer to any question that was asked of her and kept parroting back the same set of lines the entire time. "I'm a maverick, I come from a big energy producing state, We need to drill for more oil..."
- DavidGuetta9, on 10/03/2008, -3/+15All of her answers felt like she pre-recorded them.
*click* "I am a from a small town and I know small town values*
*click* "John McCain is a maverick"
Same bull over and over again - desertcoffin, on 10/03/2008, -3/+15Palin for hockey mom, Biden for Vice President!
- DangerCollie, on 10/03/2008, -3/+14Twice she made some statement about looking at the past instead of moving forward. I'm surprised Biden didn't point out that was coming from the party that's still blaming Clinton for their own incompetence and mismanagement. I would have been all over that.
- nickels, on 10/03/2008, -1/+11A bunch of polls back it up:

A McCain supporter blind to the facts, what are the odds? - whodoes, on 10/03/2008, -1/+11Palin's only test last night was proving she could go an hour without howling at the moon and chewing her leg off to escape the cameras.
- sharkd, on 10/03/2008, -3/+13Gwen, if I could just, BRIEFLY, respond to the issue of Joe Biden, before the next question. Say it ain't so, Joe... by actually addressing and, dare I say, answering these questions, you've waved the white flag of surrender, playing to the terrorist media who seek to destroy us.
John McCain and I, both -- ya know -- Mavericks™, have fought people, places and things which have sought to destroy us, such as Charlie, books, banking regulations, Russia, moose (that's the plural, not the single, ya know, Charlie), wolves, polar bears, Vladimir Putin's giant floatin' head, oil industry taxes, brain cells and intelligent, high-level political discourse. U.S. Americans know full well that a latte-sipping, Constitution-studying Community Organizer, who's fathered two black children, is no match for a rabid moose, but a Maverick™ hockey mom/Joe Six-Pack with an AR-15, circling the moose in a Piper Cub, piloted by her fighter pilot Maverick™ running mate, stands a pretty good chance of holding their own against a celebrity-esque anti-Christ who wants to Change you into charred corpses, like a secret muslim is apt to do. That's a Revelation™ of what I am, a hockey mom, wearin' lipstick, with a giant American flag pin, to ward off witchcraft. And, that is the reason that I, a Maverick™, respectfully refuse to answer any of your America-hatin' questions... unless they involve Alaska seceding from the Union or all of the horrible, mean nasty things that the Vietnamese did to John McCain, under the direction of William Ayers, Tony Rezko and an 8-year old Barack HUSSEIN Obama. [Wink] [Wink] - geekwithsoul, on 10/03/2008, -0/+10The one that stuck with me was when the moderator offered them a chance to address the conventional wisdom's understanding of their "Achilles heel" -- Biden answered with humility, humor, and addressed the question. Palin didn't even begin to address the question. It reminded me of all the times someone asked Bush if he had regrets and he either didn't give a straight answer or answered with something about not making mistakes. What the hell is it with these people on the right that they can't even acknowledge their own weaknesses?
- Talphin, on 10/03/2008, -0/+9I agree. Although, I have to admit, she actually did better than I imagined she was going to do. I am not saying she was great, I am saying I had EXTREMELY low expectations. heh
- geekwithsoul, on 10/03/2008, -0/+9Um, you do know how long McCain has been in DC right? You do know he was one of the Keating Five, right?
- StrangeFamous, on 10/03/2008, -0/+9So says the digger with the name "OMGWTFROFLMAO"
Unless it's one of those "ironic" meme names. - SpinningHead, on 10/03/2008, -0/+9Everyone should read her responses in the transcript. Its even more disturbing than hearing them.
- takamalak, on 10/03/2008, -2/+11How does it feel to solidify in people's minds that Christian = Racist, Lukas?
- Whackly, on 10/03/2008, -2/+11Dude, what debate were you watching? I think someone who obviously heard and saw what they wanted to ought not accuse others of only taking heed of the echo chamber. Palin only answered one question and that answer was 45 seconds of gibberish followed by a stuttered, qualified, and feeble "yes." You need to maintain some objectivity. You do realize that you can disagree with Mr. Biden's opinion and refuse to vote for Obama/Biden but still recognize that Palin lost the debate right? Feigned (or, god help us, real) indignation in a digg comment won't suddenly change the past and make it true that Palin did well. Scroll down a bit and read Skatoolaki's comment.
- IndigoMoss, on 10/03/2008, -2/+11While I agree that Huffington Post sucks, you are a retard.
- VanishingLex, on 10/03/2008, -1/+10@LukasSmith
Resorting to Ad Hominim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem) is not a civilised or reasonable response to Takamalak, whilst his comment was indeed out of order, one would encourage you not to stoop to his leve.
A) Your opinion on being labelled christian being more insulting than racism suggests you either harbour deep prejudice against christians yourself, or that you believe racism to be inherently acceptable. If you want to be fair, rather than judging christians en-masse you would judge that the organised group of people pushing infringement of civil liberties and suppressing science are to be judged unfavourably. Judge people by their actions not their group memberships.
B) Mentioning skin colour is not inherently racist as you say, however your comment can quite easily be seen to imply that obama would be dissatisfied or ashamed of the colour of his skin, If you were in fact implying that he would wish to change it for reasons of success in avoiding the racism from external sources then you should have made this clear.
However, I would contend that Barack Obama would much rather that the external racist influences were removed, than he would like to change something which a) does not detract from his abilities in the slightest, and b) has led to him experiencing things that have quite possibly enhanced his ability to empathise with the hardships others go through.
C) Stereotypes are not always as bad as racism, racism is a negative stereotype, but there are plenty of examples of positive stereotypes also.
D) The people who have held power before him and the colour of their skin really has no effect on his ability to do the job. You ask people to prove you wrong, on your accusation that he does little to improve upon. Given that the only proof would be his record if he was elected president your arguement is a non-starter, and could apply to anybody who has not already been president of the USA.
In the absence of previous time spent governing the USA on their Curriculim vitae, one must judge candidates for their job both on their prospective plans for what they intend to do in that job, and on how trustworthy they are to carry out that plan if you perceive it to be desireable. In the case of trustworthyness, one must look at their track record in other jobs and work they have done, and whether they have upheld the principles and ideology that they have based their campaigns on. - M4dC0ns3rv4tive, on 10/03/2008, -4/+12Keep this in perspective. When you say Joe "won" the debate, be careful in how you define "win". I agree, Joe clearly has a grasp on his information, is a sharp debater, and his experience shows. As absurd as it sounds, lack of a disaster for the McCain campaign was a win. Sarah held her ground enough to shift the headlines to the next debate. I write this as I switch between CNN, MSNBC, and FOX. They are focusing on the Tuesday debate and Congress's bailout bill. Sarah's task was to not be another headline and to be sure not to create more material for SNL and the late night talk shows, she accomplished that. There weren't the, "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy" moments (for those of you old enough to remember). I will say, polls seem to say that Joe won, however, there are several polls that Sarah was seen as more likable. Unfortunately, American seems to be more interested in popularity than substance. Take that to mean whatever you want.
- secrity, on 10/03/2008, -0/+8I bet that SNL can find a skit in Palin's answers and remarks.
- jdibiase, on 10/03/2008, -0/+8Confirmed ... don't go to the link.
- ViSioN, on 10/03/2008, -0/+8Really? Because I couldn't even make sense out of half of what she said.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 10/03/2008, -0/+7Jack Cafferty said it best: If McCain is elected president, we're a 72-year-old's heartbeat away from Sarah Palin becoming commander in chief; and that should scare you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8__aXxXPVc - roebeet, on 10/03/2008, -4/+11She did OK, but she lost. Biden was confident, direct, and personal. She was clearly nervous at first (listen to her voice early on), and there's only so many times she can answer questions by saying "he's a Maverick" before it gets annoying. I also didn't like the cutesy smiles, winks and down-home "gosh darn it's" - this is not the Andy Griffith show, this is debate for the title of Vice President of the United States. Is this the person we want meeting with world leaders??
- Lingur, on 10/03/2008, -1/+8DON'T go to this site!! It tries to make you run some exe...! Dugg Down, Reported and BLOCKED!
- Teanuh, on 10/03/2008, -1/+8Yes, I hate how the media keeps giving her credit because she didn't majorly screw up like in the interviews. To me, dodging questions - though it avoided her talking out of her ass about some subject she didn't know about - was a big weakness.
Yes, we were expecting her to totally blank out on questions and ramble nonsense - and she did in some instances - but no, she didn' totally ***** up. Sorry, but to me, that isn't a victory.
Oh, and what was with the winking and flirting with the camera and the audience??? This isn't a beauty pageant, Palin. Cute does not win elections. At least I hope not. - rondeth, on 10/03/2008, -0/+7Yeah, I'm not sure what the "Joe-Six-Pack" stuff indicates. Are they going to be sitting down with foreign heads of state with a cold Coors 24-ouncer? I know one can overcompensate the other direction towards 'elite', but I just don't like the 'folksy simpleton' perception surrounding my leaders.
- incredibilistic, on 10/03/2008, -1/+8Biden is the winner (maybe not the runaway victor but I think he had more substance and confidence in his positions) and I think if they held another debate he'd win that one too but I think it's based on the fact that Biden can wax political for hours on end because he's a seasoned politician. Whether that's good or bad there's no denying he knows his stuff and "cramming" for a debate just to "look" like you know what you're doing is not the same as being confident and well versed enough to hold the number 2 or number 1 spot in the Oval Office.
And while Palin performed well at the debate I'm surprised no one has questioned why she did so well in comparison to her interviews with Couric and Gibson. Imagine a track runner that never won a race or never placed higher than 3rd or 4th place. Then all of a sudden a week later at the big race he comes in first and leaves others in the dust. Do you honesty think he got that good in just a few days time that he was able to outperform the rest or did someone pump him with a billion milligrams of steroids?
If Palin is such a rock star when it comes to specifics and facts and knowledge about national and foreign affairs then sit her down for an interview immediately and don't rehash any questions that were presented during the debate or ask her follow-up questions from the debate and see how she does. Chances are we'll see a repeat of the moose-in-headlights Couric interviews. - drowningfish, on 10/03/2008, -2/+9How exactly did she win?
Is main street to you defined as people more coerced by a naive arrogance (not innocence) wrapped in an attractive female body winking incessantly at a camera to woo away her detractors?
Was her " arrogant folksy" tone conducive to bringing both sides together in tough times, or was it dreadfully polarizing, much like the current administration has been these last 8 years?
Was her unwillingness to provide substantive answers to any of the questions, questions which directly impact the very lives of her alleged audience, helpful to main street?
This is not about spin this about calling her out on her blatant incompetence. Her tactic in this debate was simple. When she did not have a pre-programmed answer to a question she attacked. She read off the same stump speech rhetoric with absolutely no substance. I find it quite ironic that her supporters were the same people calling Obama out on his "Hope Speeches" (no substance); yet are swooned by her Cheshire-cat like folksy demeanor of non-substance.
The Republicans are running this campaign on one basic principle: Americans are short-sighted, American Idol watching, ill-informed sheeps. They don't want Americans to pay attention because if Americans suddenly pay attention; Republicans lose.
Prove them wrong.. vote Obama if you support him or Ron Paul if you support REAL conservative ideals. - eibborjames, on 10/03/2008, -2/+8It's obvious to anyone with a brain that Biden could have nailed her on many issues. It was not the intension to make her look like a complete fool. Palin thanked Biden and the moderator "very much". What do you think she was thanking them for? JMO
- darkstar949, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6Just because someone is likable doesn't mean they are capable of running a country though.
- medfreak, on 10/03/2008, -2/+8And that is exactly why you are hack.
