- SpencerMc, on 11/07/2008, -47/+325I would point out that the very report that chastised the board for not taking action included a note that Emanuel had little to no influence on the actions of the board:
'The role of the 18-member board of directors, including Emanuel, was not addressed in the SEC's public action but was heavily criticized by the oversight group (OFHEO) in 2003.
The oversight report said the board had been apprised of the suspect accounting tactics but "failed to make reasonable inquiries of management."
The report also said board members appointed by the President, such as Emanuel, serve terms that are far too short "for them to play a meaningful role on the Board." '
However, all charges of corruption should be investigated, regardless of party, so I shall Digg this anyway. - cheezy321, on 11/07/2008, -80/+332If this makes the front page of digg my faith will be restored in it.
- openmind01, on 11/07/2008, -71/+316here we go kids.
- killdashnine, on 11/07/2008, -62/+302Could be worse ... Palin could be in office "running the senate".
- flgood, on 11/07/2008, -141/+291Wow only 8 diggs. Change the title to "McCain's financial advisor linked to Freddie Mac", and digg would be going ape *****. But I guess we'll just ignore real problems because that's not what got us into this mess in the first place, now is it?
- AceyS, on 11/07/2008, -18/+156He served for less than one year and wasn't specifically named. I'm all about seeing all sides and discovering truth, but I'm not so sure there is a lot of meaning here.
- pgoetz, on 11/07/2008, -38/+171Read the article. This story is completely lame. Emanuel had nothing to do with anything other than perhaps being asleep at the wheel.
Buried. - Snap65, on 11/07/2008, -6/+119and improving our foreign relations with the Nation of Africa.
- blizihizake, on 11/07/2008, -61/+156Even though I voted for Obama, this needs to be dugg. Seriously wtf.
- dietfacts, on 11/07/2008, -14/+99Since when is being on the board = being THE director. Dick Syron was the chairman. Plus this is news from 6 years ago! Retarded.
- leontes, on 11/07/2008, -39/+122No biggie: Emanuel is a hard hitting pitbull of a man who will rip out your throat and spit at you while decimating your livestock.
His job is Chief of Staff. He works for Obama. Clinton loved working with him: cause if you told him to do something; he'd know it would be done. I trust Obama's moral compass (save his silly point of view on gay marriage, ethanol subsidies and the bailout bills) and it is Obama we need to rely on, not Emanuel. Let him do the dirty work and let Obama shine the way.
Think Ari Gold meets Josh Lyman meets Conan the Barbarian. That's the kind of man I'd too want for my chief of staff. - DeadPlasmaCell, on 11/07/2008, -12/+94Did anyone even read the story? The guy was part of a board of 18 people and there for only 13 months back in 2001. And this:
[ "The report also said board members appointed by the President, such as Emanuel, serve terms that are far too short "for them to play a meaningful role on the Board." ]
Doesn't seem like this dude single-handedly brought down the economy like people are making it out. - specialK16, on 11/07/2008, -42/+114Burying this as being COMPLETELY biased. Not by the media but by the bunch of retards commenting in here.
Let's see how far down can I get. - 0xbaadf00d, on 11/07/2008, -15/+82You forget that the election is over. Now it is OK to question the chosen one.
- jpkrautw, on 11/07/2008, -45/+101Wow, so the man served on the board for 13 months, pushed for Freddie Mac cooperation with Congressional concerns, and was unable to single-handedly bail out the Titanic? Anyone who is familiar with Emanuel, Chicago politics or the 2006 Democratic House takeover knows very well that he is an absolutely fantastic choice and a great indication of things to come.
- Knowltey, on 11/07/2008, -16/+72But the article doesn't say whether or not Rahm was part of the conspiracy or if perhaps he was a whistle blower that wasn't listened to?
- SemiSarcastic, on 11/07/2008, -36/+86You see? This is why we can't have nice things.
- div2n, on 11/07/2008, -52/+100I don't think this is any more relevant than Wright was for Obama or the Keating Five was for McCain. Buried for being flamebait.
- bigterguy, on 11/07/2008, -29/+75Who better to find the stolen money than the guys who stole it???
I am glad to see that Comrade Obama is installing such high quality non-partisan people into key posts. It is in keeping with his aim to bring us together. - pgoetz, on 11/07/2008, -7/+51If you actually read the article, you will find that the headline is sensationalism at its finest. Emanuel was on the board of directors -- one of 18 people, not the director, for a few months and resigned in May of 2001 -- 7 years ago and a few months after the scandal started. Further, he encouraged the board to take the Congressional concerns about oversight more seriously. Buried as lame.
- dboy, on 11/07/2008, -14/+58if you idiots who are chomping at the bit to tear down Obama would actually READ THE ARTICLE instead of sensationalizing this story based on the headline:
"...Emanuel was not named in the SEC complaint
....The spokesperson said that while on the board, Emanuel "believed that Freddie Mac needed to address concerns raised by Congressional critics."
...Emanuel was named to the Freddie Mac board by President Bill Clinton in 2000 and resigned his position when he ran for Congress in May, 2001.
...The role of the 18-member board of directors, including Emanuel, was not addressed in the SEC's public action
...The report also said board members appointed by the President, such as Emanuel, serve terms that are far too short "for them to play a meaningful role on the Board."
Emanuel had little, if anything, to do with the scandal. He may have been on the board at the time but did not actively contribute to the problem. - MWeather, on 11/07/2008, -15/+548 years ago? Yawn.
- sonofalink, on 11/07/2008, -0/+39Read the article? You mean past the headline?
You're new here, aren't you? - harrisbradley, on 11/07/2008, -68/+102Don't blame me, I 'wroted' for Ron Paul
- 5urr3al5am, on 11/07/2008, -33/+65Barack open is going to 'fundamentally change' or government.. watch out people!
- KingErroneous, on 11/07/2008, -10/+41The difference here is that Emanuel is only chief of staff, not Treasury Secy. like Henry "Goldman-Sachs" Paulson.
- dietfacts, on 11/07/2008, -2/+32A man is not necessarily his father. I sure don't agree with my father 99% of the time.
- Zomgondo, on 11/07/2008, -10/+38I like how you're getting dugg down for pointing out what the article said... apparently the folks who "know the truth about Obama" don't actually like the truth much.
- toshimonkey, on 11/07/2008, -14/+42OMG I TOTALLY REGRET NOT VOTING FOR MCCAIN/PALIN! WHAT HAVE I DONE!
not. - Renian, on 11/07/2008, -15/+43Um, it doesn't matter that he was on the board of directors during the time. What matters is if he was actually one of the directors that helped to ***** everything up, or if he was one that was trying to address the issues. From what it sounds like, he was either the latter or neither during his relatively short tenure, before you go all omgwtftheskyisfalling.
Granted, if he was the former...then omgwtftheskyisfalling. - JekJob, on 11/07/2008, -5/+32Apparently not...they read the misleading title and then opened their idiot mouths.
- GoodDamon, on 11/07/2008, -11/+36Ssh! Don't tell Republicans that, give them at least a few minutes to shred the last little bits of their dignity before presenting them with facts.
- Jeepy, on 11/07/2008, -8/+33In a statement to ABCNews.com, a spokesperson said Emanuel served on the board for "13 months-a relatively short period of time."
The spokesperson said that while on the board, Emanuel "believed that Freddie Mac needed to address concerns raised by Congressional critics."
Emanuel was named to the Freddie Mac board by President Bill Clinton in 2000 and resigned his position when he ran for Congress in May, 2001.
The report also said board members appointed by the President, such as Emanuel, serve terms that are far too short "for them to play a meaningful role on the Board."
As a Congressman, Emanuel rescued himself from any votes dealing with Freddie Mac until just this year.
/FTA
Reading the article makes your comments sound far less douchey. Considering a whopping 30% of the article consisted of facts counter to your point I think it would have helped.
Also buried for the simply retarded title. - inigomntoya, on 11/07/2008, -7/+32Now that the Election is over, the entire writing staff at the Huffington Post has stopped paying attention to this Geek site...
- JEAH, on 11/07/2008, -16/+40pfft... looks like another case of the liberal media and their bias! right guys?!
- unradical, on 11/07/2008, -3/+24The Republican National Committee would beg to differ...
- yojiffyskippy, on 11/07/2008, -8/+29They're too busy dancing in the streets.
- Ne007, on 11/07/2008, -9/+30Looks like we get more of the same: Positions of Power after complete and utter incompetence.
Why are so many people that have shown complete and utter incompetence being placed in positions of power?
I once thought it was because George W. was a moron, but now I'm thinking it's because somebody with money wants it to happen....like because of a foreign interest. - thebaron2, on 11/07/2008, -1/+19You've got to be ***** me.. the Chief of Staff isn't important anymore??
Read up on some previous Chiefs of Staff and their responsibilities; here's just a brief intro from wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Chief_of_ ...
-----
The White House Chief of Staff is the highest-ranking member of the Executive Office of the President of the United States and a senior aide to the President. Some individuals who have held the position, including Sherman Adams, have been dubbed "The Second-Most Powerful Man in Washington" due to the nature of the job.[1]
The duties of the White House Chief of Staff vary greatly from one administration to another. However, the chief of staff has been responsible for overseeing the actions of the White House staff, managing the president's schedule, and deciding who is allowed to meet with the president. Because of these duties, the Chief of Staff has at various times been dubbed "The Gatekeeper" and "The Co-President".

Cut the crap with the rationalizations - it's an important position and a significant appointment. - LemonHerb, on 11/07/2008, -5/+23It's funny the straws that people need to grasp to make them feel better about the ass kicking the republican party recieved.
- Bamboozled, on 11/08/2008, -7/+25The title has some spin. Emanuel was 1 director out of 18 on the director board 6 or so years ago. For all we know he could have been a whistle blower who's voice was not heard. He also only served for a year which in the article they say isn't enough time for him to actually have made a difference.
So you can criminalize him if you want based on a lack of evidence, but that would be a bit redonkulous.
Who knows though, Emanuel could have done something that helped cause the meltdown but I don't think so based on the short amount of time on the board and only being 1 of 18 directors. Seems a little unlikely. - walkea1, on 11/07/2008, -7/+25wow, 4 days ago the knock on Obama was that he wasn't enough of a friend to Israel. Now we're saying that he's going to deliver the country to Israel. Gosh, I would never want to be president.
- falstaff, on 11/07/2008, -4/+21nihilville: Sarcasm isn't normally mixed with that level of insult, so I'm kind of thinking you're serious....holy *****. You're serious?
A) Rahm Emanuel is known as a balls-to-the-wall bulldog. Centrist my ass.
B) Mandate? By the electoral college, maybe. Doesn't match historic "landslides" or "mandates," but it is better than the last 2 elections. By popular vote, though, he barely did better than Bush 2004.
Are you sure you're being serious? - mustache, on 11/07/2008, -2/+19Wow, someone who actually knows what a Cheif of Staff does. What a novelty!
- TheSabre, on 11/07/2008, -3/+20The latter. The title is exactly how it sounds. The "chief of staff" is simply the head of President-Elect Obama's staff. No policy decisions, at least not formally. When I worked for the Pennsylvania legislature, I worked under the Majority Leader and his chief of staff often gave informal advice and all, but Emanual will be nothing like a Cabinet member.
- ajames01, on 11/07/2008, -15/+31Well, It made it. They burried the two other duplicates that almost hit the front page though.
I wonder how the front page would look if it weren't for a bunch of Obama fanboys acting like hall monitors here. - Dubbsacc, on 11/07/2008, -5/+21@haloplayer9672
Already with terrorist comparisons, nice.
They should make a new law similar to Godwin's Law, only terrorists instead of Nazi's.
haloplayer9672's Law? - PleaseJustDie, on 11/07/2008, -4/+20@Boon,
Its true he worked under Clinton and we did have a Surplus, but even Clinton (on the daily show with Jon Stewart) said he couldn't take full credit for the surplus, that it was mostly due to the .com bubble.
Clinton's part in the surplus was essentially to raise taxes back up and with the .com bubble the government took in more money than they had anticipated. As a result, Newt Gingrich's (Republican speaker of the House during the Clinton Administration who was chased out of office for an extra-marital affair) contract with America which was supposed to balance the budget in 7 years was able to do it in 4 and build a surplus.
So while technically your facts are true, he worked under Clinton and we had a surplus, the implication that Clinton and him were responsible for the surplus is a little off since it was a combination of many things, mainly the Contract with America (again a Republican initiative), the .com bubble that no one foresaw, and Clinton's across the board tax hikes. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -5/+21Politics as usual, selling our future for pennies on the dollar.
