http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaH-lGafwtE&fea ... - poopsybythebay, on 03/11/2009, -7/+176We never listened to him and now it's too late. I'm afraid the first person (President) who tries will be dead in a week.
- reuscel, on 03/12/2009, -4/+150"Every gun that is fired, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
- Dwight Eisenhower
Imagine if a Republican spoke like this today. They might actually be able to get my vote. - MemeWarrior, on 03/12/2009, -2/+111Eisenhower originaly wanted to call it the Military Industrial Congressional Complex. It's a mouthfull, but this more accurately describes the situation that exists today.
- hectorlca, on 03/12/2009, -2/+99Too few people know about this.
- Magnolit, on 03/12/2009, -3/+99Yet you still vote democrat and republican.
- InetRoadkill, on 03/12/2009, -1/+85I really wish the GOP would go back the conservatism of Ike and Goldwater. How did the GOP get so ***** up?
- batleycraig, on 03/11/2009, -7/+89There are sites where you can watch "Why we Fight" all in one piece... it's worth doing, Huh?
Smedley Butler was no slouch either, or Caroll Quigley...
*****, just the CIA gets over 2Billion up front now...then they scoop from all the other budgets.
To make matters worse..Canada is getting into the act, they had been content to supply all the uranium and sort of sneaky like.. milk the weapons industry and follow like dogs.
Thier leader..Harper is planning to put 490 billion into this stupid corrupt industry in the next few years and I have heard the whole plan is up to 1.3 trillion.
Whad uh bunch of dubes. - sodade, on 03/12/2009, -4/+55... and an America drunk with the pride of saving the world ignored him.
- RainStreet, on 03/12/2009, -14/+61OLD
/s - MemeWarrior, on 03/12/2009, -1/+48Sadly, Republicans like Eisenhower's are far and few between these days.
- Balanced, on 03/12/2009, -2/+43The Interstate Highways System is probably something that should be considered a good thing... Lots of jobs, lots of benefits. The biggest problem now is that it's falling apart.
- MemeWarrior, on 03/12/2009, -2/+41Two sides of the same bad penny that keeps turning up.
- GARussell, on 03/12/2009, -2/+38Ike waited till the very end of his second term to make the point, however.
- vatosplace, on 03/12/2009, -0/+34I liked Ike
- jsffive, on 03/12/2009, -8/+41You obviously haven't been watching Ron Paul.
- Happysin, on 03/12/2009, -3/+31Ministry used Eisenhower's speech in its most recent CD. It worked really well.
- Ades, on 03/12/2009, -17/+45End the FED!
- bobburn1, on 03/12/2009, -2/+28Yeah, then he authorized the overthrow of the democratically elected Arbenz government of Guatemala in Operation PBSUCCESS. He gave authorization to the CIA to fund, train, and give equipment (including fighter planes manned by Americans) to overthrow a government with over 60% approval from the masses.
- MpVpRb, on 03/12/2009, -1/+27Now THAT guy was a Republican!
If today's Republicans shared his views, I would not have switched parties.
In the past, the Republican party was the party of ideas.
Now, they seem to appeal only to rich people, stupid people, and religious wakkos. - Polishguy24, on 03/12/2009, -4/+29I find it scary that I stayed up last night until 4 am studying for a Political Science Mid-Term and this is one of the Essays! Is my Professor on Digg??
- waleedo, on 03/12/2009, -4/+28unfortunately no one listens to this man
- serif69, on 03/12/2009, -1/+25I keep voting for the penny to land on its side.
- siszam, on 03/12/2009, -0/+23Greed
- Bleue, on 03/12/2009, -1/+24He truly didn't, there are numerous examples of Eisenhower's warning someone. This was just his last ditch desperation try: if congress/washington won't listen maybe the people will. Turns out they didn't, because everyone hates bully's unless they are doing the bullying.
- beesaretasty, on 03/12/2009, -0/+21Yes I am.
- KimmyGibbler, on 03/12/2009, -0/+20@Balanced
I think that the Interstate Highway is a great thing for the reasons you mentioned; I'm just saying that massive public works projects aren't very "conservative". A true conservative would likely advocate private road companies completing the project, like the railroads in the 19th century. Something can be good without being conservative. - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+21Our military budget (over 550 BILLION) is larger than all the developed countries COMBINED. China, Russia, UK, France, Spain, etc.
How could anyone NOT know we are a military run country?
But hey, let's bitch about the "porkulous package" and that 9 billion in earmarks. WAY more productive.
sigh... - uglyteradon, on 03/12/2009, -2/+21I suggest others to read more about Dwight D. Eisenhower because he really was a rather fascinating President. It's sad to think that even with fair warning we succumbed to this. I've heard people reference how World War II pulled us out of the recession in hopes of it doing it a second time, it's too bad that private companies are the ones who really prophet from war these days.
I realize that's a terrible thing to say... - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -2/+21amazing how much sense republicans made before they became neocons.
- Fallout911, on 03/12/2009, -7/+25So did Mike Gravel you Obama/Clinton/McCain *****/***** suckers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSLNwG9pQFY - jsffive, on 03/12/2009, -2/+20Not me.
- zenmasher, on 03/12/2009, -0/+17Actually....this speech has always bothered me. Ike was in office for 8 years before he said this. And a general for who knows how long before that. He had many, many opportunities to do something about it. It clearly bothered him and understood, perhaps better than anyone, who dangerous the MIC really was/is....but he did nothing except give a speech as he was leaving the halls of power. And everyone touts him as a hero. Really? Well, why didn't he do something? He was extraordinarily popular. No one would have questioned his patriotism or understanding of the military. I don't think the man to be a coward, but exposing something you know is wrong when you are walking out the door is very cowardly.
- catalysis, on 03/12/2009, -1/+18This was back when the North and West voted Republican and the South East voted Democrat.
- scottknick, on 03/12/2009, -3/+20Dugg because anybody who hasn't seen it definitely should. . .
. . .although I can't believe there's anybody who hasn't seen it. - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+17You seriously aren't comparing Eisenhower to the Republicans of today, are you? You would despise the man and everything he stands for if he were alive today (judging from your usual digg comments). You do know that, right?
- blackturtleus, on 03/12/2009, -0/+16Nearly fifty years later we're worse off than ever. In fact, we're still engaged in the most pointless military campaign in our nation's history. And then there's the prison industrial complex which is the logical outgrowth of the military industrial complex. Having the world's largest incarcerated population has made a lot of greedy bastards filthy, dirty rich!!!
- BoneheadFarker, on 03/12/2009, -1/+17We're trying to get rid of Harper...one more election and he'll be gone...
- inactive, on 03/12/2009, -0/+16Or, to express the sympathies of awake Canadians... HALLLP!
- t4m5t3r, on 03/12/2009, -1/+16even back then people where ignorant self serving gimps.
Nowadays? way, WAY too late, everything he's warning us about?
it happened about 20 odd years ago!
too late!! - thinkb4utype, on 03/12/2009, -0/+15JFK ran against Nixon in 1960. His biggest issue was the "missile gap" that supposedly existed because the republicans had let the country fall behind the USSR. The missiles had nuclear warheads. He promised to accelerate research and to build more missiles to surpass the Soviets.
JFK was a social liberal, but he for a strong defense and increased military spending. - psion01, on 03/12/2009, -1/+16Eisenhower also warned, "Today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. In the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. Partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. For every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers. The prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present -- and is gravely to be regarded.
"Yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite." - Paranor01, on 03/12/2009, -0/+14Please remember though, that just because Uranium is being supplied by Canada, that a lot goes towards research & energy production as well. It's just just armaments that it's supplied for.
I am proud to be Canadian, but I disliked Harper from the 1st moment I saw his eyes.
However, I am suspect of your information. Please provide a citation for the "490 billion" and the "sneaky like" way which your mentioning. - Henwood, on 03/12/2009, -0/+14Cheney

- CrazedLeper, on 03/12/2009, -0/+13I guess people just dismissed him as a "conspiracy nut". Meanwhile the MilitAry indusTRIal compleX was being built all around us and powered by our apathy. The MATRIX is not a story; it is a metaphor for the "perfect" police state which your white supremacist government is advancing upon the whole world. There are, however, some who will never accept the machine--the problem is choice. There will be a war and the machine will be dismantled but not before it is completed and fully-operational.
Yes, yes; I've heard it all before: "your name is so appropriate", "conspiracy nut", "take your pills". All of you "normal" people do me a favor, hold your trite regurgitations and your unimaginative repetitions. You took the blue pill and nothing further is required of you. - Mpwns, on 03/12/2009, -1/+13one thing i don't like about google is they collect all this info and don't delete it. its like they are a public big bother and people love them for it. it was cool when they were just a search engine.
- leeswagerty, on 03/12/2009, -1/+13these films are great.
everyone should check out "Atomic Cafe" if you have the chance; all those now destroyed/hidden films are in it. - inactive, on 03/12/2009, -1/+12You lost me at McCain and Specter.
- Alheithinn, on 03/12/2009, -1/+12Eisenhower really wasn't much of a Republican.
