- verge, on 05/10/2008, -11/+66And these are the folks that are to protect Obama?
- Monolith4, on 05/10/2008, -32/+76Who friggin cares? The article itself says they were JOKES. You expect these people to be emotionless cyborgs?
These people have gone through years of training and discipline to get this job -- when the time comes, they do what they're supposed to -- THEY PROTECT THE PACKAGE. Do you think every solider fighting Hitler on D-Day was free from off-color jokes? Gee, who do you think originated the "france always surrenders" joke, anyway? Maybe those very grunts who still went ahead and gave their lives to bring europe freedom from fascism...?
Honestly, it's ridiculous how much weight is given to humans acting like humans. i.e., imperfect. Grow up. - MaryCait, on 05/10/2008, -2/+33this is why none of us can ever become important...
our digg comments alone are enough to make us look like douches - enclaved, on 05/10/2008, -6/+30yeah man, nooses are hilarious.
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -4/+27"The disclosure of the messages follows an incident last month in which a noose was found in a room used by a black instructor at a Secret Service training facility in Beltsville, Md. Agency officials said that episode was under internal investigation."
What black person wouldn't find that hysterical? - Zcott, on 05/10/2008, -8/+31This is really no different to any other workplace, ever.
- JasonCox, on 05/10/2008, -16/+34BREAKING: The Secret Service makes off-color and inappropriate jokes just like the rest of the country.
- milkmage, on 05/10/2008, -1/+18sure. hang a noose in your office. see if you don't get invited to a meeting with HR.
- AzureRise, on 05/10/2008, -3/+21FIRE THEM AND HIRE NINJAS. Just a suggestion.
- Pinkertinkle, on 05/10/2008, -4/+20Why yes they are.
- MrCleann, on 05/10/2008, -2/+18You guys are hilarious. Racism isn't cute, cool or funny. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if the SS wasn't charged with protecting lives. Its funny how white people think its cool to create a stressful and insensitive workplace for everyone else but themselves.
How is being RESPECTFUL being Politically Correct?
Someone explain that? - underdugg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+16To all those saying this is just a "joke," consider the actions going on, here:
1.) Failure to supply evidence upon a court order. (multiple instances.)
2.) Failure to promote Black workers when they earned it
And:
* Threatening to kill a black leader; declaring that it is possible for the SS to do an get away with it.
Just for #1, people should be getting fired. - underdugg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+14Wait -- you joke about killing fellow Americans in your workplace?
Your workplace refuses to promote Blacks?
Your workplace gets away with refusing a court order?
Where do you work? - reeder, on 05/10/2008, -2/+13Like they did in Dallas when they stopped searching for weapons at a rally of over 17,000 people because they looked "friendly."

***** Disgusting. - toddcat, on 05/10/2008, -1/+12Oh yeah, we love us some assassination jokes.
- etx313, on 05/10/2008, -1/+13So who watches the watchers?
- darny, on 05/10/2008, -3/+14Nobody in my corporate, private organization circulates racist jokes in email, why should they be doing it in our government? To the citizens of this country and to the world this looks like executive branch-sponsored racism. It shouldn't be happening.
- darny, on 05/10/2008, -0/+9It's one thing to be stupid enough to make racist jokes at work, it's another thing to do it through email, and a whole other thing to do it using secret service email. Please.
- darny, on 05/10/2008, -1/+11How STUPID can you be...if you're going to be racist you should use your personal email account. Even if my supervisor(s) were trading potentially damaging emails using my company's resources I wouldn't participate. Add the extra layer of high-powered and potentially high-profile government agency...and then add the layer of the current controversial presidency...
I mean, how STUPID can these guys be?!? And to think they're members of one of the most powerful and prestigious agencies in the world... - darny, on 05/10/2008, -0/+9If you blow off steam by making racist jokes, and then feel the need to have it all documented in email, god help you, because I'm not.
- underdugg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+10Spot-on.
Just substitute "Jokes condoning the killing of Blacks" with "jokes condoning the killing Americans in a terrorist act"
I think the SS agent who made the joke about killing Jesse Jackson should be fired, and put on a Terrorist-watch & no-fly list. (And everyone in this thread who is defending him/her?) - underdugg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+9Your workplace discriminates against Blacks?
Your workplace refuses to obey court orders?
Your and your coworkers threaten to kill Americans?
You and your coworkers get *rewarded & promoted* for threatening to kill Americans? - EarlOfLade, on 05/10/2008, -0/+8Secret Service?
- TimDigg, on 05/10/2008, -0/+7actually the blacks who came back from World War 2 came back and could not eat at the same restaurant and the FOUGHT for this country
oh yea lets forget what happened to the asians...
http://orpheus.ucsd.edu/speccoll/dspolitic/pm/1942 ... - EarlOfLade, on 05/10/2008, -6/+14That, in itself, is scary enough.
Racism and religion - USA in a nutshell. - alilhappything, on 05/10/2008, -2/+8They already are protecting him.
- rhabd0mancer, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6FOX NEWS?
- charmaniac, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7No, its not just a joke. These government offices should be held to the same standard that corporations hold their employees. In the modern corporate world, if a high level executive starts shooting around racist e-mails, they will be fired very quickly. Even the appearance of impropriety is wholly unacceptable because it instantly creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and risk. Not just that, but the organization responsible for the safety of the President should not employ supervisors who are so undisciplined that they would make even ONE racist comment through e-mail.
- gigasquid, on 05/10/2008, -5/+11Goes to show (again) that underneath all the *****, arrogance and bluster, these SS folks are bigoted little proto-hominids just like the rest of us. Not YOU of course, but the rest of us.
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -3/+9In my opinion there is a difference between posting "***** stole my bike" jokes through email, and threatening black instructors with a noose. The former is most likely harmless fun which doesn't necessary makes them racist, they probably go drink a beer at the pub with black people at the end of the day. While the later is damn right psycho, he should be tracked down as soon as ***** possible before he does anything stupid, like you know, attempting to assassinate a black president candidate for instance.
- toddcat, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6What does that have to do with anything? The lawsuit is not about their failure to protect a President. It's about making a workplace inhospitable for black people. (And I'm white)
- jessehadden, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7That's a really good point. If I had made such a comment (in writing no less), and the government became aware of it, I would be under investigation. I would very likely no longer be able to fly. Why is it different for the SS?
- underdugg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7No, someone:
* created a threatening and hostile hostile work environment
* denied promotions to employees because of their race
* failed to obey a court order to supply evidence, multiple times
...and that doesn't even address the "jokes" where government employees are threatening that if they murdered an American citizen, they could get away with it.
That's like making jokes about committing a terrorist act -- shouldn't such people end up on a no-fly list? - toddcat, on 05/10/2008, -0/+6You're right Pablo. I'm white too and find this callousness regarding race horrific.
- Bakebehe, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7Let's see, in the entire history of the Secret Service, with multiple presidents, candidates and other high-profile dignitaries, they have had exactly...no black presidents.
But yea, I disagree with people saying this would make them less capable of protecting Obama should he win. They'll do their job. - TremorX, on 05/10/2008, -3/+9You mean people are expected to act professionally at work? What kind of ***** is that?!
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -2/+7I couldn't get served at an Italian restaurant outside Atlanta 15 years ago. My kids were called "half breeds" in South Carolina about 10 years ago.
Yeah, ancient history, douche. - mabhatter, on 05/10/2008, -1/+6so the next time some secret service agents are around my town I can break out the impeach bush t-shirts, tote my rifle case around and crack jokes about taking out Darth Cheney? I'm sure they'll see it as "just a joke" too.
I would get in big trouble for those jokes at my place of business... a steel mill with very crass workers... that behavior is not tolerated in the private sector, why would it be tolerated by people who we are bound by law to comply with if an emergency happens. It's not appropriate for business communication. period. - toddcat, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5Still doesn't make it right.
- underdugg, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5The SS only had *TWO* years of emails searched. They have refused to turn over other documents and emails.
The years? 2003-2005. ...which is AFTER the lawsuit was filed in 2000.
Not only should SS agents and administrators directly involved be FIRED -- the people who are supposed to do the firing (and have failed to, up to this point) should be fired. - sk11, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5"freedom from fascism?"
You mean like forcing people into camps because of their race? - luken7, on 05/10/2008, -2/+6Interesting that while we freed the world from fascism, we increased segregation here at home.
- toddcat, on 05/10/2008, -1/+5Damn right man. It's comparable to a death threat being made against white folks (I'm white) and a supervisor saying just ignore it. Some of you Diggers are terrifying.
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4Yeah you do, this guy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_J._Anslinger - Monolith4, on 05/10/2008, -4/+8Maybe because jokes are JOKES, not actions?
Maybe because the point of comedy isn't to be all-inclusive and kumbayah, but to get a laugh out of people? Maybe because the world is already full of serious *****, and most people think comedy shouldn't be censored because a few people take it too seriously? - toddcat, on 05/10/2008, -1/+5I know, what kind of BS is that? We have to make racist jokes on our own time? /end sarcasm
- underdugg, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4Will you laugh at jokes about killing Jews?
Really, why not? - cquinnd, on 05/11/2008, -0/+3Does that mean Republicans would have to hire Pirates as a counter move?
- DarkPrincess74, on 05/10/2008, -2/+5Geez, at what point DOES someone become a racist to you? Do they have to hang someone before you consider them to be derogatory? Keep telling yourself that telling a racist joke doesn't make you racist. A lot of people out there realize this is super offensive and if you were the race that was being made fun of I bet you would think that too.
- Tyrghast, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4Digg does.
