- Equinamin, on 06/30/2009, -3/+31The common sense approach in drug policy.
- Vaiper, on 06/30/2009, -2/+25Also, the sky is blue and the Earth orbits the sun.
- anawnymoose, on 06/30/2009, -3/+19The only people who think the war on drugs hasn't been a disaster are people who are deathly afraid of drugs.
- litleboyuranium, on 06/30/2009, -2/+15Or those that stand to profit from the "war."
- omgwtflawl, on 06/30/2009, -3/+16Whenever it comes to public policy, just listen for 4 words: "think of the children". If anyone ever utters that phrase, brace yourself for something idiotic to fall out of their mouths, and for common sense to be jettisoned out of the window. Of particular mention: alcohol policy, "war on drugs", "sexting" and other things involving teens having sex with each other, and firearms policy.
- ArthorBearing, on 06/30/2009, -4/+16Alright superman go stop everybody from using drugs. Since it's your place to make that decision for people, and it's possible, and you're certain that it's desirable.
Or maybe you should allow humans to act like humans since they will anyway and there's nothing you can do about it except waste time, energy, and money. - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+12What's the OTC equivalent of acid or Ecstasy or dmt. Or Marijuana? WTF are you talking about?
- KevinG2, on 06/30/2009, -0/+12Yeah totally... just the other day my doctor gave me the generic form of PCP for my headaches. Just because something can be reproduced in a lab doesn't mean it's OTC at your local RiteAid.
- danworden, on 06/30/2009, -2/+14Just like... If people stop having sex, the war on AIDS ends and people stop dying. It's really that simple.
- ArthorBearing, on 06/30/2009, -1/+12A government task force and senate committee have been established to investigate your claims
- ArthorBearing, on 06/30/2009, -2/+13People distort the issues this way: "drugs are bad, therefor spending money to reduce drugs is good." Meanwhile the programs all fail, it's a money pit, and it undermines democracy in all the countries in which the so-called war is fought. Time for a change.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+11There are lots of people that have no problem using cocaine recreationally.
- deltron0, on 06/30/2009, -4/+13Coming from someone who can't spell dying.
- rizzo2008, on 06/30/2009, -2/+10but keeping any drugs illegal will allow the drug war to continue. Cocaine is extremely lucrative for drug lords as well. The fact of the matter is the drug war is more dangerous and lethal than the drug itself.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+10dugg for the truth
- Taiyoryu, on 06/30/2009, -2/+10There are more alcohol-related deaths than cocaine-related deaths each year, yet the government isn't about to take your beer away. What the government does do is put out information about the dangers and consequences of alcohol abuse so that you can make an informed decision, and regulates the manufacture of alcohol so that what is on the bottle is in fact what you drink and is reasonably safe to do so.
- EddiePotato, on 06/30/2009, -1/+9Thank you, Nancy Reagan.
- EddiePotato, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9You're obviously not part of the business or entertainment worlds. Casual coke use is nearly as common as pot.
- Mothrog, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7Yeah, just looked at how completely ***** the Netherlands is. Oh, wait.
- crb1987, on 07/01/2009, -0/+7"the "war on drugs" has been a disaster"
dont believe me look at what the dea's budget was last year alone
http://www.usdoj.gov/jmd/2008summary/html/118_dea. ...
2,041,818,000
thats 2 billion dollars people
The current system of prohibition encouraged corruption among police officers, politicians and even judges. "It poisons the whole system, it undermines democracy," Cardoso said. "The war on drugs is based on repression … How can people believe in democracy if the rule of law doesn't work?" Users should be offered treatment rather than jail, he said.
amen anyone who cant see the truth in this is blindfolding themselves
all the war on drugs is doing is raising street prices and producing a lucrative market for criminals to control, if this market where to be abolished and we spent that 2 billion on education about drug use then the result would be exponetially better
right now marijuana is the number one cash crop in the united states, yet its one of the cheapest plants to grow. the only reason? prohibition
"There is a very grave situation in Mexico," he said. "More people are being killed there (through the drugs war) than in Iraq." when will people get their heads out of their assess
cardaso is a very smart man and i want to believe that he can start something bigger here but its simply too ingrained in our government i have little hope - mcsenget, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7ironically, common sense is not common to most people
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -3/+10If people would stop being so god-damned stupid, and stop posting retarded *****, I wouldn't have to bury them. It's really that simple.
- Scottamus, on 06/30/2009, -3/+9From the no ***** sherlock section.
- FLarsen, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6"Grow up", says the guy using the stupid and pretty childish argument "grow up".
- Hetman, on 06/30/2009, -1/+7I can see it now 10 year olds growing marijuana and poppie plants. s/
- Manther, on 06/30/2009, -2/+7This is one of those lessons that history should have taught us already.... Prohibition didn't work for alcohol, and it won't work for anything else.
- scamper22, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5pretty amazing the *shock* over cocaine.
have you ever tried cocaine? It's not that bad. If you can handle exstacy, you can handle cocaine. Obama did cocaine too and he is relatively normal.
That said, we each have our limits. Amazing to see people who are okay with weed cringe over cocaine.
Then they're surprised some goodie goodie might think that weed is crazy.
Other think alcohol is crazy.
One of the many reasons I support the legalization of every single drug. No exceptions.
Even a drug that if taken will kill you in 5 seconds. I'm pretty sure you can buy legal drugs that will kill you as well... try drinking weed killer or something like that.
You cannot stop people from taking things into their body. So you might as well make it as honest as possible by making sure people know what they're taking. Imagine being able to buy pure mdma at the pharmacy instead of risking what some dealer provides that may contain anything that you don't even know. - spokexx, on 06/30/2009, -1/+6if someone wants to do it, let them. if it kills them, thats their fault. Educate first, and if someone abuses it, oh well.
- Leopards, on 06/30/2009, -3/+8Legalize it all!! Just don't expect me to be using any of it!! "Legalize Drugs" "Consider it Evolution in Action". That will do a bit of "Skimming" on the gene Pool!!
- IPrintAll, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4Like many people, at one point in time I believed it was because people gave a ***** about other people. Well, 38 years of life has shown me I am wrong about that.
Then I came to believe that it was all about the money- can't be. While I'm sure it has grown into a money making venture over the course of it's life, I don't think it's entirely true. It's not the main reason.
I have come to the conclusion that those in power wish to stay that way. We are but mere extensions of these people, or so they'd like to think. They often convieniently forget that people possess a little thing called free will. We are born with it. We are not parts of a larger machine, we are individuals.
Drugs, particularly psychoactive substances, causes a revolt in a way. Sort of like a Muslim woman wearing make-up or wearing a dress that's a few inches too short. It directly flies in the face of those in power. And that terrifies the powerful people.
They want autonomy. And I guarantee if you and your friends are sitting around burning a J, the last thing on your minds are what the leaders and CEO's of this world desire from you.
The "J" is a big middle finger. - nietzscheanx, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4The problem might just be caring too much about people who are problematic. I do drugs, that I've researched(not all drugs are bad, I really hate when people correlate drug use with weak moral character), and I function vary well in society. My only problem is how some people want to judge me based simply on drug use stereotypes.
- Mothrog, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Yeah, it's so addictive that the risk of becoming dependent after 10 years of use is 15-16%.
http://www.nature.com/npp/journal/v30/n5/full/1300 ... - FLarsen, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4@"I say if you go into public under the influence, automatic jail term":
Stupid policy. Doing drugs in public doesn't automatically make you commit crimes, so there should be no automatic jail term.
Punish people for the actual crime, not for using a substance that *might* cause *some* people to commit crimes. - scopegoa, on 06/30/2009, -2/+6Nicotine is much more addictive than cocaine
Per user, alcohol kills more people than cocaine
I know many people who use cocaine recreationally
Nicotine is by far the biggest killer, and one of the most addictive substance that we know of (even more so than heroin according to some reports).
Nicotine kills more people per user than any other hard drug out there.
Run the numbers yourself if you don't believe it. - nietzscheanx, on 06/30/2009, -1/+5In all reality Drugs make use of what is already in your body, along with your state of mind. Your body makes drugs. Your body is in a constant state of being on drugs.
Don't confuse a person's inclination to do stupid things with the proactive use of such natural bodily functions. Drug use can and should be an intelligent behavior.
Such is the basis of all pharmacology. - nietzscheanx, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5I've certainly used it recreationally and would again but that doesn't automatically make me a lunatic.
- Mujokan, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3An even more common phrase for the hack politician is:
"We don't want to send the wrong message." - nietzscheanx, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3You're basically right about the possitive correlation between unregulated drugs and the general publics' ignorance on what the quality of the drugs are, what they do and what amount is reasonable but calling all drug use a matter of a fix is kind of degrading. You call it getting your fix when you feel satisfied from eating a large meal? From kissing your daughter good night? from feeling good after a workout? Are the feelings themselves wrong in any way?
- spokexx, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4wow! if there isnt a better argument for someone who NEEDS to smoke marijuana, it's YOU 2facedtruth. LIghten up Mr pessimistic, you only live once and you're dead forever. Go back to Yahoo and complain that we have a black president.
- Mothrog, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3Go to Columbia some time and see the terrorism perpetrated by the drug lords there to maintain their trade. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.
- Mothrog, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3"All of the above mentioned RR, have been reproduced in labs."
Uh, yeah. No *****. Ecstasy and LSD were both lab chemicals. That doesn't mean there's an OTC equivalent. - Talphin, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Well, it sounds as though you have been formally educated on the subject of Marijuana, but still managed to have your brain washed by government propaganda in regards to cocaine.
fascinating - EddiePotato, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2You have a very strange view of the situation, Tom Cruise.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Legalizing drugs = more money for South America. That way we don't have to spend millions of USAID.
- Eccles, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Yeah, it's terrible stuff, you might wind up President.
- nietzscheanx, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2You can digg an article on the main page without viewing the article. Seems like a bandwagon effect.
- nietzscheanx, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2I suppose that actually is true of all crimes even the real ones.
- jcastillo81, on 06/30/2009, -2/+4Hooraaaay!!!
- Mothrog, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2Uh, yeah. Tobacco's pretty damn easy to grow, and alcohol is extremely easy to make. They still seem to make plenty of money off of it.
