- mjk340, on 04/30/2009, -32/+132It seems nobody cares about contributing to a person based on beliefs or values. They only want to contribute based on the 'R' or 'D' following their surname.
- Cojafoji, on 05/01/2009, -9/+85Now you see who the true Americans are...
YOU SUPPORT THE CANDIDATE, NOT THE PARTY.
His views haven't changed much... - BillE3, on 04/30/2009, -17/+82Buyers remorse. They thought he would work for them.
- Lionhart, on 05/01/2009, -8/+67Cry more. If you are stupid enough to donate your money purely because of political party instead of the issues you deserve to lose your money and be smacked. Should have just donated to the RNC campaign committees.
- Dumbledorito, on 05/01/2009, -6/+59Isn't this a tacit admission that donors think they're purchasing something?
Donations as "free speech" my ass. - mjk340, on 05/01/2009, -5/+54You folks are amazing. If a person holds values and beliefs consistent with yours, you should be happy they get elected regardless of which moniker we stick at the end of their name. You are all saying you do not want to elect a person, but a letter that follows the name of a person.
If Republicans thought Specter was that bad of a person, they shouldn't have funded him in the first place. Why did they? Because they wanted a rubber stamp with an R on it. The person didn't change, just the letter. - RumpleForeskin3, on 05/01/2009, -7/+51F- BAD SELLER. ITEM WAS NOT AS PROMISED. WOULD NOT DEAL WITH AGAIN
- pookydirt, on 04/30/2009, -25/+65It's defective... can I get my money back?!
- dygel, on 05/01/2009, -4/+43This is ridiculous. I mean, let's say I donated heavily to a certain cancer research fund. In a few years time, they turn around and unleash a zombification virus on the world instead of preventative drugs for cancer. Would it be right for me to turn around and demand a refund? No. Because I'll be a zombie. I'll demand brains or human flesh, whichever particular variant of zombie virus this happens to be.
...I forgot where I was going with this. - Troika37, on 04/30/2009, -25/+63As I recall, the RNC bailed this guy’s ass out of the fire in 2004 - under the assumption he would serve a full term as a Republican. So are they going to get their money back?
- thecodeman, on 04/30/2009, -25/+63Wheres my money bitch!
- punx, on 04/30/2009, -79/+115One can but hope it will bankrupt his campaign. He's a plague no matter what party he is in. I wouldn't even wish him on the Democrats. Well, maybe just a bit.
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -23/+55I say tough ***** to them. He has been nothing short of a despicable troll since he's been in office. Nobody forced you to donate. The fact that you did only shows you to be complicit with him. Sucks to find out your cash has been stolen and now he's jumped ship? Maybe you should have realized him for the POS he was and booted his ass out long ago.
No sympathy here. Then again, repealing the 17th amendment and allowing the States to send their representatives to DC sounds like a better plan. As soon as the PA people/legislature realized he wasn't working in their best interest, his ass could be sent home. Screwing around with the way the government was originally setup has come home to roost. Senators were never meant to gain office by a popular vote. They were meant to gain office by representing the State. - thedarkwolf, on 05/01/2009, -0/+27I came here to say exactly that. Specter did not change any of his positions or beliefs. All he changed was the party label. I cannot imagine he will vote any differently now that he is a democrat and not a republican.
This just shows that people don't actually care what the elected officials believe in or what issues they actually vote for. People are elected because they are a republican or because they are a democrat and not because of the issues that make them fall into one party or another - tehnico, on 05/01/2009, -7/+33I love when this happens. It's punishment for people who blindly vote for party rather than policy. If people are happy with his voting record and past performance this shouldn't matter.
- danielttt, on 05/01/2009, -23/+47Lots of luck. They got what they paid for. He's been a self serving scumbag for years. I hope they get their money back. Better yet, I hope they learn not to shell out to an obvious sell out.
- PhillyMJS, on 05/01/2009, -3/+26Wow, what a non-story. He offered to return donations to people who wanted them back IN THE STATEMENT ANNOUNCING HIS PARTY SWITCH.
From http://www.philly.com/inquirer/local/20090430_Spec ...
---
"Tucked away in Sen. Arlen Specter's party-change announcement Tuesday was an 11-word sentence that could cost the newly minted Democrat more than $1 million: a promise to return recent campaign donations "upon request.""
---
Anyone *demanding* this when it has already been offered to them is just a tool. - momomathew, on 05/01/2009, -8/+30mjk, this is not about ideology between Republicans and Democrats, this is all about Specter getting re-elected in a now Democrat leaning district.
- Dumbledorito, on 05/01/2009, -13/+35Because the 'R' values worked SO well for this country in the past few decades.
They just "trickled down" all over everything, eh? - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -13/+32Specter is proof we need term limits
- DudeInAustin, on 05/01/2009, -13/+31I favor returning to senatorial appointment by the states as a means to return to the federal system envisioned by the folks who created this country. The states are not vassals.
- dhoneywell, on 05/01/2009, -4/+19Dumbledorito:
"Trickle down" comment FTW!
sprout52:
I can't speak for the whole of Diggnation, but I'm an employed adult, and know several others like myself who frequent the site. Digg is a huge bored-at-work hobby for a lot of people. - leighton0h, on 05/01/2009, -3/+18you have a list of "useless Diggers who make Digg suck more and more each day" ?
Seems like the title is a list in itself.... - dhoneywell, on 05/01/2009, -3/+18Normal? There's no 'normal' in a country of 300 million people. The criteria that constitutes normal in whatever awesome place you are from certainly isn't normal everywhere else. This sounds like a thought born from that delightfully divisive "I'm a real American!" idealogy. Apparently there are some things about the 'R' that Pennsylvanians find repelling, because they don't vote for it anymore.
By the way, I think he should give some dough back, it was pretty misleading and scummy to get elected as one thing and become another. Then again, that's all politicians to some degree. - sandersdamnit, on 05/01/2009, -14/+28you're a D that I wouldn't want to associate with
***** Douchebag - orlyfactor, on 05/01/2009, -3/+17It's called a DONATION not a LOAN.
- designerutah, on 05/01/2009, -9/+22Money is given to influence the votes, not to support the candidate?
- sanibelsnook, on 05/01/2009, -1/+14you can look at any of them and see that fact but they'll never vote that in even if it is what's best for the country .. as if they suddenly care about that.
- stonebear, on 05/01/2009, -2/+14Peels the scab right off, doesn't it.
- numb, on 05/01/2009, -4/+16Indeed. The only reason he switched is because he knows that more people will vote for him simply because he has a D next to his name.
- DangerCollie, on 05/01/2009, -6/+18I realize the Republicans are all about ripping on anyone showing the least bit of disloyalty to the party, but you might want to remember that you're going to need every vote you can get in the Senate, including Specter. So, as much as it gets your panties in a twist, you might want to just chill the f' out. Otherwise, he may be more of a Democrat than you really want him to be.
Converts are the most zealous of the faithful. - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -4/+15That's just one part of it. You don't think Michael Steele pouring money into a negative ad campaign against a sitting Republican senator had anything to do with it. He was being treated like trash by his own party because he wasn't lobotomized to follow party orders.
- madtechnologist, on 04/30/2009, -18/+28LOL...it's the ol' bait and switch routine, ya see
- pilgrim3970, on 05/01/2009, -1/+11actually you could say that of most of the folks in Washington.
- SOS84, on 05/01/2009, -12/+22They should go ask Rush et al for the money. The anti-Americanism he and his ilk encourage everyday through their racist idiotic drivel have pushed real Americans like Specter and tens of millions of former GOP members away from what is now the world's largest hate group. Rush should put him money where his mouth is and refund the money himself, if he does not need it to pay for his drug habit that is.
- paintgrl, on 05/01/2009, -1/+11Gold Star for freaking hilarious!
- GnralHavoc, on 05/01/2009, -7/+17If they truly feel that he no longer represents their views then I don't see a problem with them asking for their money back. Good luck getting it. However asking for their money back is about the only way to get a Senators attention anymore. Other then that they pretty much ignore you, which is sad.
Specter changing sides is the perfect reason for going back to either back to state appointment of Senators or term limits on Senators.
There is very little difference between a Moderate Republican and a Moderate Democrat. He did not change his values, he did it to save his political skin and that is the sad part of it all. . - punx, on 04/30/2009, -9/+19Nice one, Stewie!
- C0ntraRadical, on 05/01/2009, -0/+9I dunno. He was pretty upfront about his motivation in changing parties. He could have ***** about it about like most politicians would have but he didn't.
If anything he's an honest, untrustworthy weasel. - rvandy, on 05/01/2009, -4/+13How could he possibly be reelected after this? I realize he made the switch because he thought he wasn't going to be reelected as a Republican, but are people in Pennsylvania just going to forget that he used to be a member of the GOP?
- cersad, on 05/01/2009, -1/+10So what these people are saying is that their "donations" are really more like an investment in influence over a congressperson's political agenda. Corrupt, much?
- Dumbledorito, on 05/01/2009, -0/+8@aadyss: My goodness, who do they think they are? AIG? A hedge fund? Halliburton?
You don't get a free ride in THIS country unless you're at least an LLC! - lordmike, on 05/01/2009, -5/+13"And you realize that this is a republic and not a democracy, right? That means that the will of the people is to be adhered UNLESS it infringes upon the rights of those not in the majority."
Suddenly, Republicans care about the minority... Where were you 4 years ago when you were screaming about the "tyranny of the minority" or whatever? - inactive, on 05/01/2009, -17/+25It's that time again, folks. Another installment of "When Right Wing ***** Whine and Cry"
Always at this late hour... - Bloodwine, on 05/01/2009, -1/+8I wonder how many people just vote down the party lines without really thinking through the issues. I probably really don't want to know the numbers, it'll depress me.
I do my best to try and understand the issues or the politicians before I vote for them. Their party affiliation means nothing to me. - rushiku, on 05/01/2009, -12/+19I guess I'm not getting what all the hullabaloo is about.
He changed party affiliation to better represent his constituents, isn't that, y'know, his job? - thanakar, on 05/01/2009, -11/+18Why should they get their money back? Though I do not agree with him switching parties, his views haven't changed. Oh wait..they only gave him money because he was a Republican, not because his views were in agreement with theirs..i c..
- pilgrim3970, on 05/01/2009, -7/+14While I don't think that Specter should expect to walk away with money that people donated to help him with his next re-election bid as a Republican, I still think that it is disengenuous to cry about this because, as has been pointed out, he didn't change his views, just his party. That's what you get for blindly supporting the party line.
