- pyry, on 08/08/2008, -1/+6I would say this is part of a larger more general issue in the area where larger nations control smaller regions that are ethnically separate from the controlling region. Look at Chechnya, for instance. There has been a nearly endless conflict between Chechnya and Russia, despite that Chechnya is part of Russia. Russia is mainly afraid that if Chechnya were to go, the other regions in Russia would also want to become autonomous. Russia is full of these areas too, and there are troubles in a few of them (Mari Republic comes to mind). If Russia is indeed making a power play for South Ossetia, or is instead helping Georgia quell separitist feelings, they are doing it because they probably want to make a statement to their own regions considering the same possibilities, without having to go attack people who are considered Russian citizens.

I do not wish the citizens of the nation of Georgia any ill will either. As I am aware there are many Orthodox Christians in Georgia too and yes I pray for them too. The civilians of all countries involved are the ONES who ultimately pay the price for bad decisions that their leaders make.
Russia DID NOT attack Georgia. Russia is defending its civilians. I know that is what I would want America to do, if the roles were reversed. Wouldn't you?
