- lightsandcolors, on 09/22/2008, -5/+553This is the financial equivalent of the Patriot Act. Write and email your representatives. We can't allow this gross reach of abusive power to happen again.
- rearlgrant, on 09/22/2008, -6/+287Following the 9/11 attacks, the Administration claimed that it needed enormous new powers to meet the threat of terrorism. Members of the Office of Legal Counsel spun out wild theories under which the President had virtually dictatorial powers when he acted under his authority as commander-in-chief. The OLC also drafted an extremely broad authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) that the Administration would later use as proof that Congress had already authorized virtually anything it wanted to do.
The past seven years have required enormous efforts to keep the Administration from making ever more outrageous claims of unreviewable authority and engaging in ever more unaccountable practices.
Bush Administration: Give Us More Unreviewable Power; We Did So Well The Last Time We Asked
As Ronald Reagan would say, there they go again. - jeffbw, on 09/22/2008, -10/+289Are these criminals still in power?? Thanks a million, Madame Speaker.
- gyronic, on 09/22/2008, -6/+170HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
If congress says no: Obama and the Dems hate America, Its all their fault we are bankrupt!
Ahh you gotta love GOP politics, shrewd, nasty and cutthroat.
And to think there is still 45% of Americans that want them some more GOP.
Bu$h Co will dump all this on the laps of Americans and walk away laughing. - paintgrl, on 09/22/2008, -1/+137BAD BAD BAD!!!! Please write every rep in congress and the senate for your state and tell them this will not fly.

No way, no how.. - HamHead, on 09/22/2008, -2/+129How can this possibly be in the best interest of the tax payers???? These corporate heads should all be in jail. If the CEO were held personally accountable for the company performance you'd see brighter decisions comming from the top and they would understand that a 7 or 8 or 9 whatever figure income comes with a cost.
- kg37, on 09/22/2008, -5/+107So basically we have a crisis created by rich people giving poorer people too much money in loans. The poor people can't pay them back, so the rich people are not so rich anymore. The government is proposing to take the poorer peoples' money and give it to the rich people so the rich people can continue to party on. That will leave the poor people, and government, in deep, deep debt. The deeper the government's debt, the lower the value of the dollar, because the government will print more money. This will make everything more expensive for everyone, but the rich people won't notice because they have our money. Does that make more sense?
This will all happen if there is lack of oversight on this bailout. - lisa3711, on 09/22/2008, -4/+99More criminal acts, trying to squeeze them in before they leave office. Addington wrote it I bet. Perhaps the Bush family, will help us out here with their personal income, considering they were in charge the last time banks failed as well.
- Echota, on 01/05/2009, -8/+99Bush and Company seem to take delight in crapping on us!

Talk about a real blank check... - nmezib, on 09/22/2008, -1/+74This is obscene. This is an absolute slap in the face. We elected them, and they go off and do whatever the HELL they want WHILE telling us we can't complain. It's like a playground battle, where the stronger, richer kids keep making up rules so they never lose in whatever game they are playing, while we foot the humiliation.
Write your state reps, your congressmen, what have you. tell them you do NOT support what is going on. Get off the blogs, off the message boards and write someone in charge. We are the people of the US, we are tasked with the power to change things as we see fit by way of elections. If you don't support this, don't vote fo those who do, and make sure they bloody well know it.
I swear, if this were a third-world country, they'd be strung up in the middle of Gramercy Park with their entrails hanging out for all to see. But then again, if this WERE a third-world country, I guess we wouldn't have nearly as many Starbucks :P - liberD, on 09/22/2008, -1/+63Bush is obscene.
- georgecolombo, on 09/22/2008, -1/+62Is there nothing so outrageous that it's beyond the pale this administration? A provision like the one mentioned here is breathtaking in its contempt for democratic governance. If there were ever a time to draw a line in the sand, this has got to be it...

We're *****. - huntress58, on 09/22/2008, -3/+57I oppose the proposed bailout plan because, it is not the responsibility of the American public to bailout poorly run free enterprise when they fail.
Most of us can't afford to invest in these kinds of organizations and with what little we have can't afford the risk so we invest in savings that is FDIC protected. Our government is not in the business of guaranteeing risky investment.
Why burden the average taxpayer with this? Where is the government oversight?
Let's make a deal: transparency in this deal, if at any point in time it is found that there is wrong doing, unlike FISA, there will be criminal repercussions. Then for every taxpayer dollar, each taxpayer gets a credit voucher that they can use to save their home from going into foreclosure, help pay off car or school loans, pay off credit card debt.
That would be reasonable. - BossKey, on 09/22/2008, -0/+49Translation:

Call. E-mail. Act.No oversight, no passage..at the very least. It's that simple. - JKap, on 09/22/2008, -3/+46It's called National-Socialism, folks. Back in the early 20th century it was called Nazism.
The libertarian-authoritarian paradigm has nothing to do with the fraudulent left-right paradigm of the War Party. - why3th, on 09/22/2008, -0/+42What happens is unchecked absolute power put into the hands of the Secretary of Treasury. Regardless of where you stand on this issue of bailing out companies, such blatant disregard for ANY check and balance is absurd.
- huntress58, on 09/22/2008, -1/+39This whole thing smells.
Something fishy in Denmark, ahem DC?
Brings to mind WMD's, and FISA - wariscrime, on 09/22/2008, -3/+40There is no other terrorism but the U.S. Government Terrorism!!!!!!

oh, you forgot PALIN SEES RUSSIA FROM HER HOUSE LOLOLOLOL!!!!1one1! - nmezib, on 09/22/2008, -2/+39indeed on the obama hating america point. there really is no winning! if congress says no, it's Obama's fault. If yes, we're screwed with footing a ridiculously large bill.
If obama loses the election, we're still screwed. If he wins, he inherits a broken-ass economy, people are still pissed they have no money, and he still gets the blame.
Republicans these days don't know how to run an economy but they sure as hell know how to not make themselves look bad in front of their supporters. - inactive, on 09/22/2008, -3/+37yupp it does. thank you.
- nmezib, on 09/22/2008, -2/+30when we elected Banana Republicans into office?
Wakka wakka!
ba-dum-tish!
(downdigg me if you must, that lame joke certainly deserves it) - dustmoo, on 09/22/2008, -1/+29Stinks of the Patriot Act--- Big time.. just look at that price tag.. and they are telling congress to "Hurry" and that "Time is Short"

- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -1/+27Throw 'em all out in November.
- GoneGreen, on 09/22/2008, -3/+29Un-*****-Believable.
- Comatoast, on 09/22/2008, -4/+29WAKE UP PEOPLE! This is (as someone above said) the Patriot act applied to our finances! This no oversight, no challenge BULL***T has to stop! When do we stop giving up freedoms for this calculated, contrived fear-mongering!?
Ask yourself why there is a need to have no oversight or questioning of the Treasury Secretary's actions? I am not one to be into conspiracy theories, and I have always been a bit of a pacifist, but I do believe I will look into getting myself a firearm. Can't be out there unarmed with a bunch of Republican "Patriot" loyalists running around with all the guns.
Obama can't even fix everything at this point, but McCain is now a complete puppet of the GOP. He will do whatever his handlers say and will surround himself with the same "old guard" that GW and GHW took directive from. We will lose MORE freedoms under this man (and, eventually that woman).
I'm calling and writing, but I don't have much faith in my representatives doing the right thing - they didn't the last 2 times they voted to take away my rights. - ConcernedCanuck, on 09/22/2008, -3/+26Hey the Patriot Act was presented following another catalyzing event... That ended up being good for americans... so this plan should be good for Americans too!
After all, our Governments only have our best interests in mind!
Yay Kill more insurgents and send our tax dollars to the big banks. They screwed up SOMEONE has to save them! Its our duty as citizens to Help those that make bad decisions, is it not? - afx1, on 09/22/2008, -0/+23even with full oversight and review, $700 billion is a ridiculous amount of money. asking for it without being accountable to anybody is brazen even for this administration.
- ccblaker, on 09/22/2008, -0/+23Yeah and we can't forget that we're all a nation of whiners.
- CrazedLeper, on 09/22/2008, -1/+22Unless your opinion is not backed up by billions or dollars or weapons of mass destruction, you have no power to stop it.
- falser, on 09/22/2008, -2/+22THIS IS AN OUTRA-- ooh a Victoria's Secret commercial just came on...
- AndrewDB, on 09/22/2008, -2/+21Checks and Balances?
Adios. It was nice knowing you. :( - why3th, on 09/22/2008, -1/+20And get the next round of the top 1% in there!
Nothing changes in November. Nothing. - maceelk, on 09/22/2008, -0/+18Write my representative and senator's, CHECK!
- fluxion, on 09/22/2008, -1/+19means bush and his homeboys can take our $700 billion and do whatever the f*** they want with it with absolutely no accountability or repercussions
- inactive, on 09/22/2008, -4/+22Wait -- why aren't all the RepTards jumping in to defend this? Could it be that finally -- FINALLY -- this criminal regime has exceeded even their tolerance for getting ***** over?
Naaaaah. - HartgE46, on 09/22/2008, -3/+21With everything that has happened in the past 8 years, I just can't help but think it's all been a conspiracy... meticulously planned since the first day "W" was elected. 9/11 was just the first step... caging votes ensuring McCain's election will be next. Thus ensuring the continuation of this Puppet Presidency controlled by our "friends" the NeoCon Terrorist Regime.
- EarlOfLade, on 09/22/2008, -4/+21Madam Speaker?
Where are all the gun nuts who page up and page down cry about how much they need guns in order to overthrow the government?
Where are they? Jerking off to Guns & Ammo?
It's time to put your money where your mouth is and use these weapons to what you claim they are for. -
