- Dynamis, on 05/28/2008, -1/+50I have a bad feeling that this is going to get very ugly.
- stjoad, on 05/28/2008, -11/+43go canada
- life38, on 05/28/2008, -22/+51Canada and Greenland really should have the rights to the area.
- jspegele, on 05/28/2008, -4/+30How does that work? Russia has as much claim as Canada. And the US and Norway certainly have claims as well since they both have borders on arctic; hence the 5 countries that are meeting.
- Grummond, on 05/28/2008, -4/+27So, now the global climate change is eating away at the arctic ice, we can use that fact to burn even more fossil fuels?
Great idea! - rpi22, on 05/28/2008, -4/+24What happens when they start strip mining the deep sea vents and kill the Bacillus Infernus, which is the only bacterium that can eat the sulfur atomic structure of the andromeda strain?!?!
- geekchic, on 05/28/2008, -0/+16"Five Arctic coastal countries will meet in Greenland on Wednesday to discuss how to carve up the Arctic Ocean"
Freeze it then use a very large knife. - DrCrankenstein, on 05/28/2008, -4/+17Tough decision. Even tougher considering no one knows where this "oil" may be found.
I drink YOUR milkshake! - wreckosaurus, on 05/28/2008, -5/+18Russia already put their flag there, I think the matter is settled. Legally, the precedent has been set in Finders v Keepers.
- dudefather, on 05/28/2008, -0/+12only mighty Poseidon rules the seas
- ugmold, on 05/28/2008, -1/+10Damn, you've ruined the rest of the world, leave it alone piggy
- blackbeardtron, on 05/28/2008, -0/+9Yeah, that's the way to open up diplomatic discussions... *rolls eyes*
"Give it to America because we have more guns." - shawnanigans, on 05/28/2008, -0/+9Before they realized there was anything worthwhile there it was generally recognized that Canada had the north pole. Even has a postal code for it H0H 0H0.
- kataztrophy, on 05/28/2008, -7/+15Let Canada have it. They will put it to better use that we would anyway.
- pradaaddict, on 05/28/2008, -5/+13We shouldn't have total rights to the area, but we should definitely have the largest shares. Greenland is the closest to the north pole, Canada owns the Northwest Passage and has the military direction to protect our sovereignty over the region.
- tehnico, on 05/28/2008, -3/+10http://www.shunya.net/Pictures/NorthPole/arctic.jp ...
Measured by distance from the north pole, Denmark comes in first, Canada second. Norway and Russia duke it out in the bronze medal game and the US fails to qualify.
Wait, is this international hockey? - binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -1/+8IN 40 years this will be the new caribbean
- Mahluc, on 05/28/2008, -2/+8Dugg for this line "Canada, apparently taken by surprise, responded with a military build-up,". I didn't realize a 50 man patrol on snowmobiles counted as a build up.
- loveforkarma, on 05/28/2008, -0/+6Right when I heard the words "Military Build Up"
- Tyr7BE, on 05/28/2008, -1/+7Is Greenland a country?
EDIT: NM - from wikipedia: The dependencies of Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, however, remained part of the reorganised "Kingdom of Denmark".
So.....sort of. - rhartman, on 05/28/2008, -0/+6Nonsense. Harper may be a lot of things (and most of them bad), but it was he that began the military build-up to protect our claims to the Arctic once it became clear that our territory up there was in jeopardy.
- martinjohansen, on 05/28/2008, -0/+6Headline in Danish newspaper: "Kampen om Nordpolen er slut" = "The battle over Arctic has ended" (http://politiken.dk/udland/article515331.ece%29
The countries just signed a threaty to collaborate on the matter. - banderwocky, on 05/28/2008, -1/+6But...we peed on it first. Territory MARKED!
- Ciryon, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5We (the norwegians) are already in a bit of a ompaompa with the russians over fish in the Norwgian Sea and the Barents Sea.. This could potentially cause more harm in our diplomacy. We have no army either, they could invade us with bows and arrows (no joke)
- inactive, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5Well if Russia has a Flag on it there's nothing we can do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYeFcSq7Mxg - inactive, on 05/28/2008, -3/+8Isn't this like trying to claim the Pacific Ocean? I didn't think you could claim jack that was more than 12 miles away from your coast.
- GhostM, on 05/28/2008, -0/+5Phukin' A
- jerrycan, on 05/28/2008, -1/+6LOL! The ***** weather will keep all but the insanely hardcore away. The frozen north ain't no WTO summer shindig....
- RyanBlack, on 05/28/2008, -1/+5Say that to the 3000 odd Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.
Go to hell - Jlaugh, on 05/28/2008, -2/+6It's part of Denmark. Russia and Sweden border the Arctic as well.
- pradaaddict, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4We also have the largest Ice Breaker fleet in the world.
- MikeSD34, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4Two guys in a row boat with a 9 mm doesn't count as a battleship. /sarcasm
- sodade, on 05/28/2008, -1/+5"which could hold up to one-quarter of the world's undiscovered oil and gas reserves, far more than Saudia Arabia’s."
The point of Saudi (and other ME countries) oil is that it is cheap to get at. I am doubting that Arctic oil would be so cheap... - dualboy24, on 05/28/2008, -0/+4Don't worry we can always open up a wormhole and transmit a message using encoded Buckey Balls back into the past.
- Timetheos, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3I have a vision of a whole mess of ships converging on the arctic. After all, possession is 9/10ths of the law.
;-) - dig1x, on 05/28/2008, -3/+6So, enlighten us. You want us to just open the floodgates for **MORE** exploitation of our natural resources?
This planet has a limit you fcuking idiot. The artic is one of the last un-exploited places on the planet, perhaps we should consider alternatives? There isnt much left you know. - Cytranic, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3Canada: We want MOOOORE money.
- dig1x, on 05/28/2008, -2/+5Ride a bike oil-junkie.
- Garganturat, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3Isn't Canada buying new ones?
- 4degrees, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3It wont matter who gets what piece of the arctic pie, if someone calls on "Burns' slant drilling Co." :-P
- XTX7X, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3Which, according to thousands of scientists more credible than you, they are.
- rhartman, on 05/28/2008, -0/+3I find it ironic that only a couple of those "5 Countries" even cared about the Arctic before it became clear that there were some vast resources hidden beneath the ice. Natural gas and oil aren't the only riches to be found either.
Canadian Arctic Diamonds: http://www.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/mms/diam/index_e.htm - Yokohamalion, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3sorry if i need to get to work to feed my family *****.
- FairDinkumMate, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3Blowing up all your SUV's & other gas guzzlers & realizing that the crap you morons do to the world effects every other country as well would be a great start!
Remember the ozone hole? I can guarantee it wasn't caused just by cfc's from Australia & New Zealand but we're the ones with it above us! Thanks very much for that. So now you want to do more damage with greenhouse gases - GREAT! - Grova, on 05/28/2008, -5/+7Screw it! Drill it now. We've already ***** up the earth. I want cheap gas and then we can get the ***** out of the middleeast.
- Jlaugh, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3It's a commonwealth nation so yeah the have the queen still at least symbolically.
- RyanBlack, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2Canada FTW
- Ciryon, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2Svalbard is Norwegian... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard
- Hetman, on 05/28/2008, -0/+2They have consciousness and understanding.
- Hetman, on 05/28/2008, -1/+3I am jut saying how many human lifes are you going to sacrifice for animal lifes? Are they equal. "does one baby polar bear equal 1 baby human" I do not think so. I eat meat. An animal is an animal.
