- Eclyps19, on 09/05/2008, -0/+47I'm glad this guy is finally out of office. A lot of people who aren't familiar with what has been going on are assuming he's being removed because of the affair. No, he's being removed because of his 8 felony charges, spending tons of city funds on personal expenses (cars, motorcycles, massages, champagne, parties, etc), the Whistleblower case where two police officers were fired to cover up a party and murder (they turned around and sued the city of detroit for millions).
The list goes on and on, but this guy hasn't done a whole lot of good for the city. The speech he made last night was just humiliating. It's a shame that when he runs for mayor again in the future, Detroit will still elect... - georgemason01, on 09/05/2008, -1/+47"The city is much better shape than the city I received seven years ago..."
Lying until the end. - analogkid01, on 09/05/2008, -8/+46Right, because corruption is only limited to the party you're opposed to.
- solboldi, on 09/04/2008, -25/+60Obama introduced this guy at an event as a mayor doing a great job.
- darneveryone, on 09/05/2008, -10/+411. Democrats aren't the only reason Detroit is messed up. What do you think happens when all the jobs leave a city?
2. You probably don't like the media implying that all Republicans are as corrupt as Ted Stevens. By the same token, not all Democrats are as corrupt as Kilpatrick. There are scumbags in both parties. - ColonelJessup, on 09/05/2008, -2/+26Na na na na, na na na na, HEY HEY! GOOOODBYYYYYEEEEEE!!!!
- Fixhotep, on 09/05/2008, -7/+28Blaming detroit on the Dems? Look, Kilpatrick was their 2nd worst mayor ever (Young) and 100% a mistake. That's going to happen when you vote for the "first hip-hop mayor." But before him was Dennis Archer, also a dem. He rebuilt the city, DESTROYED the racial segregation and hatred that Coleman Young took years to build and made many changes that Kilpatrick ultimately tore down. People don't realize how much of the stereotype that detroit shed when Archer was in office. It's a shame too. Now it's all gone.
- nitemonkey, on 09/05/2008, -3/+24I'm neither an Obama or McCain fan (Ron Paul supporter), but I can guarantee one thing....if McCain had given the same endorsements to someone who went on to gain 8 felony charges, he would be absolutely savaged by the usual digg suspects. What happened to digg? It makes me sad :(
- ldkronos, on 09/05/2008, -14/+35McCain thinks Bush is doing a great job.
Besides, you generally don't ***** all over your host when you are visiting. - joeyGibson, on 09/05/2008, -9/+28Notice how the article fails to mention that he's a Democrat. Also notice how the Digg poster failed to mention it. I guarantee you that had the mayor been a Republican, the CNN article (and the NPR one I read yesterday) would have used the word "Republican" at least 10 times, and made ominous references to our evil overlord Bush and minion Karl Rove. The digger would also have included something like "these ***** republicans are ALL douchebags, you can't trust any of these *****" or something equally erudite.
- iLemon, on 09/04/2008, -28/+47I’m grateful to call him a friend and a colleague.
-Obama - analogkid01, on 09/05/2008, -9/+27Wow, the anti-Dems are really out in force over this one...in spite of being an atheist, I'm reminded of Jesus's words: why point out the speck in your brother's eye, when you've got a plank sticking out of your own?
The only thing that sickens me about this whole thing is that Kilpatrick is only going to do four months for his abuse of power. - HeavyNuclei, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17Archer was a terrific mayor. However, for some reason the city of Detroit hated him to such an extent that he was essentially run out of office. Don't forget, the people of Detroit reelected Kilpatrick, even after he was accused of some of she shady stuff that he'll now serve time for. I'd like to think the people of Detroit will wake up now and elect someone that will try again to do what Archer did, but alas, that's probably not going to happen.
- Eclyps19, on 09/05/2008, -0/+16sex? No, that's not why he got in trouble. Lots of politics cheat on their wives.
This guy had something like 8 felony charges. He racked up $200,000 on city funds for massages, champagne, vacations, etc. He purchased personal vehicles with city funds. He had two police officers fired unlawfully so he could cover up a party that he was a part of (in which a stripper was murdered). Those officers later sued to city of detroit for 9 million dollars and won. While over 5000 employees of the city and police force had been laid off, the 29 close friends and families that he had employeed in the city (almost all of them with little to no experience in their field of employment) are all still holding their jobs. Almost all of those 29 got large pay raises in the last 5 years. One got an 89% pay raise.
This guy is a thug with a law license. There's nothing more to it. The sad thing is that he will run for Mayor again after he does his time, and he'll win... - diggafrica, on 09/05/2008, -18/+34Please dont mix Obama with this guy, Obama is not responsible for Kwame's actions. What Kwame does in his private life is his own affair.
- addrake, on 09/05/2008, -3/+18What happened to digg? The same ***** that happens with any population...group think. The bulk of diggers are under 25 and base their ideology on liberal spew from universities and peers. They then come on here and have a virtual circle jerk around whatever the group has decided is this month's cause celeb. A few months ago is was Ron Paul, then it was Barrack Obama, now it's trashing Sarah Palin.
"Any man who is under 30, and is not a liberal, has no heart; and any man who is over 30, and is not a conservative, has no brains."
-Winston Churchill - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+17Detroit elected this guy twice. You know your city is full of retards when they make DC's dos elected cracked out mayor look like a revolution.
- grgt1994, on 09/05/2008, -2/+17Fair enough, let's not tarnish political parties with the misdeeds of their members. The only fault with your comment is that Kwame's actions here were not affairs of his private life, they were public misdeeds within his elected capacity, and that is not his own affair, it has done great damage to his electorate.
- mcphatty, on 09/05/2008, -2/+16democrats (or republicans for that matter) have nothing to do with why detroit is messed up. kwame IS NOT a politician, he was never anything more than a thug in a position of power.
i am glad that he is out of office, now the great city of detroit can start to rebuild! - gtluke, on 09/05/2008, -6/+19when a party affiliation isn't mentioned, its because they are a democrat.
- saigumi, on 09/05/2008, -1/+14No joke. A Republican has consensual sex with a man and it is EVERYWHERE that he is Republican and digger's call for blood.
A Democrat commits a criminal act, things are swept under the rug and digger's call for blood of the people bringing it up that the criminal is a Democrat. - kolinkoolface2, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14being from michigan, i cannot tell you how refreshing this is. The man is a joke and brings down a reputation not just for detroit but for all of michigan because Detroit is the biggest city in Michigan, or at least it use to be. It's finally good to see something positive happening in the state after some terrible economic slow down and terrible leadership for the past 3-4 years.
- stealthc, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14Everyone in Detroit knows he's a lying, corrupt sack of *****. Trouble is, that's what a lot of Detroit voters want.
- theghoul, on 09/05/2008, -1/+13Wow a corrupt politician! Who'da thunk it.
This kind of ***** happens in just about everywhere in the world. This guy had some promise in the beginning, but lacked discipline and character. He allowed power and influence to overtake him. This is just the latest example. It wont be the last. - jonnyboy1544, on 09/05/2008, -4/+15What Detroit needs is some community organizing!
- bradharrelson, on 09/05/2008, -2/+13This guy is complete scum.
- oldhick, on 09/05/2008, -0/+11Everyone forgets the strippers int he Governors mansion. Everyone forgets the murder and the cover up. People still think this case is about an affair and txt messages. People just don't care to learn the facts anymore.
- isuisorisuaint, on 09/05/2008, -3/+13marion barry smoked crack, got his job back!
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -9/+19I’m grateful to call him a friend and a colleague.
-Obama - mcphatty, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10if you can name two legitimately great things kwame did, i'll give you a dollar.
- iainc, on 09/05/2008, -5/+14He probably is doing a good job. But, like most men in high office and regardless of political affiliation, he has a problem keeping his dick in the right place. That's where it all begins to go awry. Instead of manning up, he abused his power to cover up, so he deserves to pay for his crimes; but let's not forget that this kind of behavior is not limited to members of one party.
- Elliuotatar, on 09/05/2008, -3/+12The 1970's called. They want their suit back.
- secondfiddle, on 09/05/2008, -6/+15He should have known better than to lie under oaf.
- pumpelly, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9Eight felony charges; 120 days in jail - You or me? 10 to 20 years at least - AND you'd be lawyered up with one public defender, not 10 or 20 top attorneys like Kilpatrick had, bought and paid for by the City of Detroit. Oh, and don't hold your breath about whether or not Kilpatrick pays his $1 million dollar restitution to the city - he won't.
- richirwin, on 09/05/2008, -2/+11Good riddance.
The Democrats don't need this guy. - ldkronos, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9"I wouldn't really call him corrupt for having an affair"
No, I'd call him dishonest for having an affair. I'd call him corrupt for the laundry list of things he has done:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwame_Kilpatrick#Cont ... - pinchduck, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9Ripping off the city, assaulting police officers, lying under oath, and setting up his security force as his own private posse funded by the city. He's a crook and a thug, plain and simple. Why don't you study the facts of the case before you make your ignorant comments?
- SteveLRowe, on 09/05/2008, -0/+8How can there be no clever OCP / Delta City comments by now.
I'm just pumped that one sci-fi prediction came true ( Detroit will turn into a corrupt ***** hole ) The obvious conclusion is that cyborg police can not be far behind. - jonnyboy1544, on 09/05/2008, -11/+19Behold... the latest up-and-coming Democrat.
- saigumi, on 09/05/2008, -2/+9Embezzling money from peoples taxes is "a private matter" and should be ignored.
HELL YEAH! I'm running for governer! - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -21/+28And let's not forget that Republicans are guilty of crimes against humanity, crimes of war, buying the media for propaganda, adopting anti-constitutional laws, and caused a 40% loss of the value of the american dollar in 5 years on top of infringing the rights of each and every single american, stealing elections and just plain making life on earth a living hell for an entire country and causing the unwarranted death of hundreds of thousands of people.
But yeah, sex scandals. - d1a1s1, on 09/05/2008, -1/+8"First hip hop mayor"...wow, thats a litle scary. Guess he wont be staying in the mayor's hizouse anymore.
- scarwars, on 09/05/2008, -3/+10well.. judging from the picture he looks like he belongs in jail
- ihavebeenseen, on 09/05/2008, -13/+20Or That "Tubes" Stevens is a Republican from Alaska.
- DeathJux, on 09/05/2008, -8/+15Man, Detroit is *****.
- Midnightrambler, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6I though Kilpatrick was finished after his first term because of the shenanigans he pulled. I was shocked when he was re-elected in '05, I guess all those things you mentioned didn't bother the citizens of Detroit. You're right he'll be back to run again and will probably win just like Marion Barry.
- sacramentalist, on 09/05/2008, -1/+7What about the dead stripper????
- addrake, on 09/05/2008, -2/+8Now if Sarah Palin had said the same thing about him and he was Republican that would be front page material. But here on digg, the "open-minded liberals" bury thoughts that disagree with theirs.
