Democrats Having a Fit Over Free Speech in Utah

ksl.com — A man in Cedar City, Utah owns the domain utahdemocrats.org. He apparently has exercised his political free speech rights to point visitors to his web site to John McCain's web site. Democrats in Utah are upset, since they own a similar domain, utdemocrats.org.

  • s3pt1k, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Boo hoo Democrats! (Disclaimer: I am a Utah Democrat). Perhaps I need to redirect my domain name to the flutist who shares the same name as I since he is older? I think not. Though I think the man's (Disclaimer: he is a former coworker of mine) choice of candidate is suspect, his rights certainly are not.

    Democrats should have registered utdemocrats.tv, utdemocrats.mobi, utdemocrast.biz, utdemocrast.info, and utdemocrast.eu! What were they thinking?
  • sofro123, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1I am a democrat and I don't see anything wrong with this. He owns the name and he can do what he wants with it.
    I checked the Who Is database and he has owned utahdemocrats.org since July 9, 2006. The state party has owned their name utdemocrats.org since October 11, 2002. That is almost 4 years longer. Sucks that they didn't think ahead and buy that one too when they had the chance. Seems like that would have been a good idea.

    And in the interest of full disclosure, I have a more conservative political bent (as does the domain owner, who I know personally), so call me biased. I also know some Utah democrats, rare species that they are, and quite like and respect them (those I know).
