- thatguy331, on 01/08/2009, -10/+62lol, just think if Burris was a Republican, there would be 20 HuffPo spam articles on the frontpage about it and everyone on Digg would be against seating him.
- DillingerSmooth, on 01/07/2009, -0/+32Cool the men governing our country are like poker players! "I'm ALL IN"
- FearlessFreep, on 01/08/2009, -1/+32Always great to cheer for one corrupt politician out-maneuvering a bunch others.
- mrgarci1, on 01/07/2009, -9/+35Damn right he called it - I don't support the man, but this was a masterful display of political gamesmanship. He knew he still had the power to make the appointment, regardless of the senate's opinion on the matter, and he did it.
If nothing else, he has earned my respect for having huge, brass balls. - oboshoe, on 01/08/2009, -1/+26Wow. The newly seated senate is off to a fantastic start. No more "business as usual". No more gamesmanship and insincere rhetoric.
/sarc - sockpuppets, on 01/08/2009, -2/+23I think Blagojevich's freakish hair is actually an alien in disguise, symbiotically attached to his brain, controlling his every thought and move.
- hackiavelli, on 01/08/2009, -1/+22Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. Makes me ashamed to be a Democrat.
That Burris would accept the office under these circumstances tells me everything I need to know about his character. Don't seat him! - ShellShock11, on 01/08/2009, -0/+20Regardless of this ***** appointment Blagojevich should have been impeached by now. Classic, they just let this scumbag run on without taking any real action.
- poprocksandsoda, on 01/08/2009, -2/+19Could you imagine the ire this would draw if the Republican party pulled this kind of stuff?
- FearlessFreep, on 01/08/2009, -1/+17because a Republican elected is so much worse then a Democrat selling the seat for personal gain
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+15It seems like the Democrat-controlled Congress is trying to best the record they set with a 9% approval rating from the last session.
- FearlessFreep, on 01/08/2009, -0/+13He favors massive subsidies to the brain-slug planet
- rotundo, on 01/08/2009, -0/+13He's lost all my respect for not coming clean. He thinks he's so powerful he's above the law. We'll see, maybe he is, but it sure as hell doesn't earn him respect. It earns him great resentment for making Americans trust their government even less. To hell with him.
- TMTurtle, on 01/08/2009, -5/+17No *****. If I voted for a Democratic Senator and he was replaced by a Republican Senator I'd be pretty upset about it.
- tavallai, on 01/07/2009, -0/+11Trail Blazer. *chortle*
- Blinker1315, on 01/07/2009, -5/+14Harry Reid's an idiot who ought to be replaced by a more competent Majority Leader, say Chuck Schumer. I don't like Blago either, but the fact is that he hasn't been convicted of anything yet and is still government. To hold up Burris' appointment would be unfair to citizens of Illiniois, who rightfully expect to be represented by two senators.
- Shaggy3, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9It does risk that, but I'm going to have to disagree. Blagojevich has made a joke out of the appointment process and is now humiliating the Senate.. On top of that its like this corruption thing never happened, nobody is talking about it now.
- Barackalypse, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9Blagojevich purposely picked a minority as a big screw you to the Democrats because he knew, for political reasons, they wouldn't be willing to oppose a minority pick like Burris. Had Blagojevich picked an non-minority candidate, the little power struggle between him and the party would have caused them to try and block his appointment.
- TSK05, on 01/08/2009, -2/+10That's how Democrats roll.
- Maddoktor2, on 01/08/2009, -1/+9Well played, Blagojevich; well played.
- akamurph, on 01/08/2009, -3/+10Or he knew the Democrats are a bunch of pussies and wouldn't do anything?
- fxu1989, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8And this didn't have nothing to do with the fact that he was black and that the Senate needs more "diversity" (more black leaders)?
First of all, is the Senate able to reject the Governor's decision? If so, why didn't they stick to their guns? Sounds to me like affirmative action. If not, then I guess there's nothing they could've done. - flgood, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6seriously. yay corruption... if you're good at it?
- Falldog, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6http://ultraorange.net/media/2007/11/weird-futuram ...
- DreKor, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6He is, himself, a Chicago Democrat. For a party that just won the White House, the Democrats sure don't seem to have their act together. But, at least they know enough not to start throwing punches at Chicago, because that would be a fast way to self destruct.
- Bartboy919, on 01/08/2009, -3/+8While I was watching Blago's first press conference after the story came out he supposedly tried to sell the senate seat, I realized that even if he did do that, he has not been convicted of anything. I am getting the ever creeping feeling that once something "allegedly" occurs, you are going to be treated as if you are guilty until proven innocent.
While I do not like what Blagojevich had supposedly done, in this country, people are innocent until proven guilty, and with this, I find that he was completely within his power to appoint a senator to that position.
Having said this, I guess Reid was put between a rock and a hard place on this issue. If he had done nothing, it would just end up as republican fodder on all the conservative news outlets.
In all, just give Burris his seat, he isnt the one who is supposedly selling senate seats. - Barackalypse, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6Ordinarily it would be hysterical to watch the Democrats infight, but the country really is in serious trouble and sticking people like Burris in the Senate isn't going to help fix it anymore than taking someone like Obama from the Senate to the Presidency is going to fix it.
- jbmcb, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5He looks like a particularly seedy professional wrestling manager.
- kronzdigg, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6What about the party as a hole (correct spelling a pun intended)?
- kronzdigg, on 01/08/2009, -4/+9Democrats are worse than Republicans who are horrible.
- fxu1989, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5That's what I thought...
What a son of a bitch. - oboshoe, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Ask Nixon about "recorded talks"
- ChefGroovy, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4It's double funny, because a democrat played the race card on other democrats. That's rare. And I thought since Obama got elected, race was no longer an issue in the country.
And I didn't know there were no black senators. That is weird. - emjaymj, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4It's a BS move but really... what can be done? Like anybody else in the USA, Blagojevich has a right to a fair trial and is presumed innocent UNTIL proven guilty. Just because he's a politician and in the public eye doesn't change this. I believe he is guilty of wrongdoing and hope he is harshly punished, but until it is proven so he is still governor.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Democrats fold to the race card...again. It's nice to see that blacks are so proud of their advancement...even if it comes under questionable circumstances. Oops, I just made a racist comment because I dare to question motive...
- cowie, on 01/08/2009, -3/+7The government really needs to make impeachment of any gov. official faster and less cluttered with bureaucracy, because if I had my way, he would be out by now. Along with Bush.
- deema1, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I love how they made it about race. The Democrats actually had a legitimate case to not accept the appointment, but once the race card was played it was all over.
I am all for an African-American taking the seat, just not one appointed by a disgracefully corrupt politician. - akchrs, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4Yes.
- honeybrass, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I have plenty of ire for a guy with his head that far up his own ass. I'm just hoping that in everything this guy does for himself and his friends some of it freakishly ends up helping the general population.
- ctdkid, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4I'm pissed Blago wasted his pick on Burris. He only chose him to piss people off and show that they couldn't stop him. Yeah, he made his point, but now I'm stuck with a crappy senator for 2 years until there's another election. Thanks *****!
(too bad Jesse White's refusal to sign the papers didn't work out. I thought he was on to something) - thunderclap, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Remember ctdkid, you elected the '*****' that appointed Burris so you are ultimately at fault. Me, while I think Blago is amazingly corrupt, I have to give him props for appointing Burris and daring them not to seat him.
- DuffyDirect, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3how does it takes balls to give a lame speech and race bait by appointing your political buddy to be a senator? honestly, what did he have to lose by doing this? Why was it "ballsy"?
- Swellin, on 01/08/2009, -1/+416 diggs supporting a corrupt politician and a governor at that, What the ***** am i missing.
- DuffyDirect, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3governors and executives are supposed to be *exceptional* people -- they are not supposed to be leniently granted "gray areas" of right or wrong. they have countless precedents of how to properly behave and act in public office for crying out loud.
- deema1, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3It's like Krang from TMNT, except on his head.
- Saq0, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3For those not clear on the story so far, senator blagojevich from illinois is being accused of trying to sell the senate seat. Obama tells him to not name a new senator. He names burris, and dems and obama say this will not stand. Burris shows zero class by nonsensically trying to play the race card against a black president and democrats and saying that he doesn't think his appointment should be in question while blagojevich faces charges. Dems back down.
- kaelyiesta, on 01/10/2009, -0/+3Riiiight, because the last 8 years are all that matters yea? Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Kennedy, all exonerated for the catastrophic ***** they put the US through because it's too hard to read a ***** history book right?
***** that. Get out of your solipsistic little bubble and see politics for what it is. Both sides are capable of extremely ***** up actions. If one must judge these actions through the lens of a party, rather than looking directly at the individuals responsible, then at least take off the tunnel vision goggles. - kigcoopa84, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3The people of Illinois need t be represented by 2 senators not surrounded by corruption
- deema1, on 01/08/2009, -2/+5Oh, brother. Where do I begin?
You only have "recorded talks?" That's not enough? Since when should that not count as intent to commit a crime?
So in your world you have to physically do something illegal in order for it to be illegal? So people who plot a terrorist act are innocent? So people who plot to kill their spouse by hiring a hitman is innocent? So people who threaten others aren't guilty of any crime or intimidation? Need I continue?
Just because he wasn't successful in selling the seat doesn't mean the guy is innocent. -
