That's because he didnt. You're degrading a medal.Congratulations. - Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -7/+87"But then again, John Kerry felt as though he deserved his.."
Kerry has shrapnel in his leg. You get a purple heart for that, period. How are you going to ***** a man with freaking shrapnel STILL IN HIS LEG!!!! - Sandozer, on 10/12/2007, -12/+88Thats just about as smart as giving an Iraqi Militant a purple heart for killing a U.S. troop.
- CaptainNoPants, on 10/12/2007, -10/+78Funny, I didn't realize they gave out purple hearts for screwing the American people in favor of your own agenda.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/25/2007, -7/+55And as an encore, the GOP will dig up somebody to give Bush their MENSA membership card.
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51"We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds,"
Certainly. But only those wounded in combat earn the purple heart. NOT those sitting in a nice cushy chair in an air-conditioned office surrounded by yes-men and women.
Oh well, I guess the truth "hurts." - thestuffmeister, on 10/25/2007, -4/+48For irony's sake, can we just go ahead and give Bush the Nobel Peace Prize?
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44Not to mention about 250 years of American military tradition.
- bigturns, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41I am a trained US Marine. If any of the branches are brainwashed it would be us.
This tool is just that, a tool. He has grown feeble with age. Rational minds would not come to such a conclusion.
W is no more a soldier than @retardojesus's cat. Furthermore, those who have served (medals or otherwise) do not deserve to have their sacrifices denigrated by such an action. - radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34It's impressive that swiftboat vets managed to paint it in a light that Kerry didn't deserve a purple heart for actually being in combat, while Bush gets one for sitting in the luxurious confines of the white house.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -5/+34Great...Now the Purple Heart doesn't mean *****. They could give my cat a purple heart for siting on his ass all day
- astatine, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Hell, why not the Literature prize while you're at it?
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29"He said he didn't feel like he had earned it," Thomas said
No, really? - ericatdigg, on 10/12/2007, -7/+31I'm an Iraqi War Veteran.
This is disgusting.
We have guys coming home every day missing limbs or worse.......for what? - implied, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32And why are animal doctors handing these out in the first place?
- vatosplace, on 10/12/2007, -9/+31The Moonbat right
- pinab, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24"emotional damage" warranted the Purple heart?
by this logic, all Americans should get one
...especially since the PATRIOT act came into existence - JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Well, this guy wasn't in Iraq. He was in Vietnam. An Iraq war vet giving Bush a medal he received there would be even bigger news.
And yes, questioning our support for the troops because we disagree with a war would be insulting to someone's patriotism. If you want to talk about support for the troops, let's talk about Walter Reed or the way the GOP removed Rep. Christ Smith (R-NJ) from his chairmanship at the Veteran's Affairs committee because he had the audacity to ask for the recommended level of VA funding. - venicerocco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21So can the Phelps'. They can do what they wish. Doesn't take away that they're dispicable. Same with this douche. Is such a disrespectful act. He's taking the nobility of the Purple Heart and reducing it to the quality of a Staples certificate template.
- theodicey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21He can give his Vietnam medals back to the government, or to a museum, or to his kid, or dump them in the Gulf of Mexico if he wants. I don't really care.
But giving the medals to a cheerleader who used every connection he had to avoid serving in Vietnam...and then went AWOL from his cushy National Guard job...and to present them on account of "emotional injuries suffered"...
That's a travesty. And downright hilarious. - bigturns, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23@quomen....
SHUT THE F UP!
Not a soul, minus you and your W loving pals, believe an ounce of swill pumped out by the swift boaters.
Turns out, regardless of your weird love-thang for W, John Kerry was there W was not.
Lastly, unless you've served, unless you've found yourself in a combat situation, how can you even start to suggest you understand what warrants such a medal in the first place? What, Rush ***** told you so? Or perhaps it was O-Really? Or was it the *****-dick, pussy, you love so much, ins-Hannity?
Just ***** off. Get back in your bunker buddy. Remember, end times are nigh! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23I didn't know you could get a purple heart for mental wounds.
- SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Why won't Digg let me edit my post :(
I misread what quomen posted. Oh well. Digg this down, just had to say it.
I was trying to make the point that Kerry had actual war injuries and they pulled that whole "purple bandaid" stunt, and now Bush symbollically gets a medal for his emotional pain. - HotMovies, on 10/25/2007, -3/+16Is it not opposite day again?
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I'm nominating him for a Nobel Peace Prize.
- mookiemookie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I'm sure the Freepers are masturbating furiously to this one.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17This is the most "WTF" story I heard in a while..
- therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Well I don't think this has been a major news story because the Bush propaganda mill is smart enough to realize the backlash this would recieve.
- Nodaki, on 10/12/2007, -10/+20Brain-washed soldier. It is not his fault, he has been trained to obey and not question.
- bigturns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10A good number of my fellow Marines, at one point, were also Republicans (I was 'once' one as well). The numbers, I am happy to report, have swung drastically in the opposite direction.
The vast majority of those who are in positions of power within the Republican party aren't the same men whom my father once believed in. More and more people are coming to the realization that the Republican party has been subverted. It's time to clean house. The only way to do so is to vote the 'crooks' out. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13this is from The Onion, right?
- pinoyboy82, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15No, it should be PC - "The worst president in the history of the United States - George W. Bush"
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Just so long as he's sitting on his ass for freedom!
- forcedfx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14This is going to make me a little more sad every time I see my Uncle's purple heart hanging on the wall. The fact that Bush has one (even if it was given to him by the vet) sucks.
- mccrusc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If you can look past the fact that there are still people who believe Bush isn't a complete nincompoop, this is actually kind of sweet in a Norman Rockwell kind of way.
He is probably just a simple soldier looking for a way to declare his allegience, maybe to allieve the cognitive dissonance caused by the dissention he was hearing from the media and people around him.
At least Bush admitted that he didn't deserve it-- unless he was just being modest, but modesty has never been a big part of his repetoire. - SultanTravi, on 10/12/2007, -26/+34Am I the only one who immediately thought of them making fun of Kerry, even though Kerry still had a piece of ***** shrapnel in his leg?
edit: Oops, apparently not. Quomen beat me to it. - FRANKeB, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16I heard lonely sailors want to give George their Purple Helmets.
- pinoyboy82, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I fully respect anybody who has served and recently had a conversation with a Marine who just did 6 months in Iraq. He mentioned he was about as Republican as you can get, but does not know what the hell they're fighting for over there. After 6 months, he said it is hell over there and never wants to go back. He fully supports the troops and is still about as Republican as you can get, but he does NOT support 'G-Dub' or his rationale for the war whatsoever.
- reed311, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Remember when at the GOP convention they were passing around purple heart bandages to mock John Kerry? They were putting them on their faces and mocking everyone who has ever earned a purple-heart. Man, I've never wanted to punch someone in the face more than when I saw them do that.
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11If you actually read any of these comments, it is pretty clear that people believe he can do whatever he wants with the medal; but that GW should have graciously said no to the offer, and possibly made some other accommodation to meet with this veteran.
It's too easy to see what you want in other people's words. - elhaf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Mabye he'll decide to wear it some time. That would be illegal, and he could finally get the impeachment he deserves.
- ericatdigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11He didn't earn it. You're degrading the value of this medal by giving it to this guy.
Just for the record......what does America get in return for sending its sons and daughters off to die in Iraq? Yes, it's his medal and he can do what he wants with it. I'm not pandering to the left or to the right.....from my personal experience these things have a very significant value. Nobody joins the military for ribbons, myself included, but damn it I don't think he should have one. - theodicey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can only imagine what Rush Limbaugh would say about this.
If he had any integrity, and wasn't just a pompous, gas-filled propagandist.
A PUR-ple heart for EMOtional injury? - MatthJD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8A service member shows gratitude to the CIC. Then a bunch of armchair generals show outrage because they don't believe he earned it and doesn't really care about the troops.
Wouldn't the service members have a better grasp on that than you??? - samcrut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Nearly choking on a pretzel does NOT qualify a man for a Purple Heart!
- arcticblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Another Marine right here. Just finished my 2nd (and final) tour in Iraq about 2 weeks ago. I just wanted to second what bigturns is saying. Most of the other Marines that I work with have changed their politcal views and will be voting democrat (the lesser of 2 evils I suppose) in the next election. Most officers still love their God blessed republican party though.
My unit was in Iraq for the previous presidential election (I was in Okinawa) and they were not allowed to vote because the higher ups assumed everyone would vote against Bush. During the recent midterm elections, most of the people I was with didn't even know there was an election going on. Not a single word was said concerning the election or even how to vote. I seriously hope that people start watching the news and reading the papers more often and push for their right to vote.
And yes, Marines have got to be the most brainwashed people in the armed forces. - BohicaTwentyTwo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Maybe if Kerry would have released his Medical Records from his time in the Navy, then there would have been less questions about the characterization of his service.
- mlfoley, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Agreed. It should have been written respectfully. For example: "Dumbya" or "Shrub."
- Afreyt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7If decorated veterans can't tell the difference between service and *****, all it does is diminish every other honor ever given to servicemen and women. The purple heart becomes a bigger joke every day. The bandaids at the RNC pissed me off more than one deluded old man giving away his medals but they both cheapened the distinction.
- BongHit10, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Did you know he is trying to enstate a governmental position called "WAR CZAR"?
