There aren't 12+ million canadians attempting to get into this country illegally. There aren't millions of documented cases of us having to deport illegal canadians from this country. Canadians aren't coming here to work and then sending a majority of their earnings out of this country. The list goes on.
But hey, call us racist for associating a country with a history of its nationals illegally entering into this country. - Nudar, on 10/11/2007, -26/+62@0xbaadf00d
Give one logical reason we can't send the illegals back from whence they came. Ever hear of something called Operation Wetback?
Just start sending everyone who hires illegal aliens to jail and you will quickly see the illegals leave. It's not rocket science. - edstate, on 10/11/2007, -11/+45@0xbaadf00d
BS. If you want to count on the Government to make this *work*, then you are beyond help. Just enforce the laws we have now, and streamline the legal immigration process. If they can do that... then... maybe. - CiXeL, on 10/11/2007, -9/+39have you seen miami lately? illegal aliens own it. the only thing that makes them legal is the wet foot/dry foot law. you'd basically have to declare war on south florida to reclaim it for the US. the US doesnt stand a chance to throwing these people out, this was the only solution.
when the motor vehicles place has a english only window that gets you out in 20 mins or less you know youre a minority
when the US post office in hialeah has to call a translator because noone speaks english you know youre a minority - Maaarrrk, on 10/11/2007, -5/+35This deal appears to be just like the deal made during Reagan's Presidency that took it easy on the people currently in the country but cracked down after that. That strategy failed because corporate interests lobbyed politicans to "not enforce" the immigration laws.
IMO this whole bill is a smoke screen just like building a fence at the border. Illegal immigration could be stopped quickly by just enforcing the laws created during the Reagan years. Throw executives from big corporations in jail for hiring illegals and the whole situation would be fixed. No jobs, no reason to be in the USA. - robojerk, on 10/11/2007, -11/+40@ y2jcrisis
You're a moron. How many Canadians are living illegally in the US? I bet it's a tiny number compared to that of the latin america countries to the south of US. Allowing large amounts of unskilled, uneducated to invade our country is not wise. We need more intellectual and skilled immigrants in the US, not third world trash that leeches off our social services and will cost the taxpayer an obscene amount of money. The type of immigrants that would be brought in by this bill will also degrade the education system so our future generations will be less intellectual.
What the US needs to do is enforce current laws and stream line the current immigration process to allow a more diverse group to come in that will be more beneficial to the US.
Southern California is now controlled by the southern invaders. - sjl127, on 10/11/2007, -38/+63All you politicians and congressmen are criminal psychopaths and you just sent our country to hell. Shame on you.
- czernel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+251. The purpose of U.S. immigration policy is to benefit the citizens of the United States.
2. Since immigration policy can profoundly shape a country, it should be set by deliberate actions, not by accident or acquiescence, with careful consideration to ensure that it does not adversely affect the quality of life of American citizens and their communities.
3. Immigration policy should be based on and adhere to the rule of law. Immigration laws must be enforced consistently and uniformly throughout the United States.
4. Non-citizens enter the United States as guests and must obey the rules governing their entry. The U.S. government must track the entry, stay, and departure of all visa-holders to ensure that they comply fully with the terms of their visas, or to remove them if they fail to comply.
5. The borders of the United States must be physically secured at the earliest possible time. An effective barrier to the illegal entry of both aliens and contraband is vital to U.S. security.
6. Those responsible for facilitating illegal immigration shall be sought, arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law and shall forfeit any profits from such activity. This applies to smugglers and traffickers of people, as well as to those involved in the production, procurement, distribution, or use of fraudulent or counterfeit documents.
7. U.S. employers shall be given a simple and streamlined process to determine whether employees are legally eligible to work. Employers who obey the law shall be protected both from liability and from unfair competition by those who violate immigration law. The violators shall be subject to fines and taxes in excess of what they would have paid to employ U.S. citizens and legal residents for the same work.
8. Those who enter or remain in the United States in violation of the law shall be detained and removed expeditiously. Illegal aliens shall not accrue any benefit, including U.S. citizenship, as a result of their illegal entry or presence in the United States.
9. No federal, state or local entity shall reward individuals for violating immigration laws by granting public benefits or services, or by issuing or accepting any form of identification, or by providing any other assistance that facilitates unlawful presence or employment in this country. All federal and law enforcement agencies shall cooperate fully with federal immigration authorities, and shall report to such authorities any information they receive indicating that an individual may have violated immigration laws.
10. Illegal aliens currently in the United States may be afforded a one-time opportunity to leave the United States without penalty and seek permission to reenter legally if they qualify under existing law. Those who do not take advantage of this opportunity will be removed and permanently barred from returning.

It's about the law. Plain and simple. I don't care if it was they were all albino British, being here illegally is just that: illegal. It's cheating, it's selfish and it's disrespectful. And the thought of an official Government endorsement of this flouting of the law is mind boggling, and maddening to a LOT of people. And sure, there are racists on both sides of this issue. But when people like you automatically insist that this is *solely* about race, and that people who don't agree with you are racist, then you show your hand. And that is you have no argument. - amunet, on 10/11/2007, -16/+37If this bill passes it would grant me the path to US citizenship. Most people think of the stereotypical "illegal immigrant." Well I am an illegal immigrant who has lived in the US (moved here with my mom from Germany when I was a baby, 2 years old). I did not smuggle over here into American soil, I am illegal because of the complex immigration laws. My family lost my I-94, which is pretty much a piece of paper that was in my passport that says I came here legally. Since this paper was lost, I have not able to apply for citizenship. As a result I am not able to work, or get my driver's license.
I don't want to start an argument here, but just want everyone to be aware that there are a lot of people like me that would be grateful of something like this passing, and we are not illegal because we smuggled here. This is my only hope, I grew up here (I currently am in my third year in a University) and want to stay here and be able to get a job when I graduate. I am sure of this because I have an immigration specialist lawyer who has been working on my case for the past two years. - HappyMax, on 10/11/2007, -7/+28Reality check, consumers benefit very little from cheap labor in most cases. Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Now it seems anytime anyone has an opinion that is anti-illegal immigration, anti-homosexuality, anti-gay rights, anti-legalizing marijuana, anti-abortion, that person is either ripped to shreds, or immediately dugg so low that their comment is below the viewing threshold.
I do not care if you are pro Mexican or Anti-Mexican, I do not think that you should be labeled a racist because you want what is best for the country. I served my country in the armed forces during desert storm. I was proud to be an american, but truth be told, the world is a far different place today, then it was even 10 years ago. We have been shackled by Political Correctness, and the US is being so pussified, that people are scared to even voice their opinions anymore.
I am not even going to state my opinion on the amnesty bill, it does not matter, congress does not listen to us anyways. But you people that ask the rediculous question of why we do not push for a fence at the border between America and Canada? The simple answer is that Canadians live a much better quality of life, have less crime, better economy, less pollution, nearly no overcrowding, and very little issues with illegal immigrants. So why the hell would they want to come here?
Sooner or later people are going to realize that the US has the same problems as their countries, only then will illegal immigration start to see a decline. Maybe someday people will sit back and think of ways to fix the issues with their own countries, instead of bringing theirs to us...

- mrmousepotato, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Many of you do not understand what this really portends for our country.
We keep hearing people saying "millions" of illegals.
Well, folks, it ain't millions. It isn't even tens of millions.
Consider that the government numbers are ten to twelve million. Remember, too, that in 1986, the estimate given by the government (1.5 million) turned out to be only a third of the number that actually crawled out from under the rocks.
A far more reliable estimate was done by Bear Stearns (the accounting group) several years ago, and they put the number at 25 - 30 million. Even if that was correct then, it has to be hugely more by now.
So ... instantaneously, we are going to have another 30? 40? million, non English speaking, unskilled, uneducated, illiterate third world welfare recipients.
Worse than that, though, is the fact that, historically, every immigrant brings in another nine. Called chain migration. It is a Fact. Parents and Grandparents to live off your social security taxes, etc.
Do the math:
30 million times 9 = 270 million.
That's 270 million non English speaking, unskilled, uneducated, illiterate third world welfare recipients.
Still waiting to hear someone explain how that can be good for this country.
Personally, I think that it is horrifying. - DreKor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11So, right now, people illegally walk across the border to work at ***** jobs. By doing this they're breaking dozens of immigration laws. When companies in the US hire these workers, they're breaking dozens of immigration and employment laws.
In the future, people will illegally walk across the border to work at ***** jobs and the companies that hire them will still be breaking immigration and employment laws. The only difference is that there will be more laws on the books.
If the INS actually enforced the existing laws, this wouldn't even be a discussion. The fact that they don't means that somebody wants these immigrants to be here. - DonCarcharo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I recently moved to Florida and while traveling I stopped in one of those little Mexican Convenient Mart stores in the middle of nowhere. If you've ever been through this state you've probably seen them before. Anyway I figure a store is a store so I go in. It was an interesting experience. Everything was written in Spanish (of course) but what surprised me was that the prices were actually in Mex$ (Pesos). Plus they didn't charge tax for anything. The oddest thing though was an area of the store where they were handing out IDs. I saw someone go through the process and it was pretty simple. Sign up, take a picture get some sort of ID.
Now I'm not against immigration. I've only got two generations of family here in the US myself. And I respect that preserving your culture is a good thing. But not when it's at the expense of established laws. It seems to me most of them want all the privileges of living here without any of the troubles involved with actually being a citizen. - riverside71, on 10/11/2007, -12/+20YOU"VE BEEN SOLD OUT!!
Start preparing for the Mexican invasion.. more gangs, more teenage pregnancies, filled to capacity medical facilities, deteriorating schools in which the majority is unable to speak, read or write English..
And before you open your trap about racism etc.. I'm not a Caucasian and wasn't born a citizen but came through legal immigration, paying my dues, waiting in the line the LEGAL FRICKING WAY which the 20 million illegal CRIMINALS did not.. - one2gamble, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8"Illegal Aliens are Criminals
Possibly; MayBE"
ummm no its actually a fact - NoWayDude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Reality check, that same cheap labor to pick crops are overwhelming SoCal school systems to the point where they are in the toilet (except for small pockets of rich white areas). Cal spends thousand upon thousands per student, and test scores for many districts are in the toilet. Many schools have to beg parents for money to pay for basic materials. Many brand new schools built are ***** on by illegals... This is a documented fact, well publicized in LA papers.
Reality check, if those laborers aren't paid under the table so no income goes to the Govt, they get at most, what $10K $20K? They get all social security benefits if amnesty comes through, which means they get WAYWAYWAY more than what they paid in. Guess who gets to pay that? Well, I guess it's OK you now have to work until you're 90 years old. But hey, we're helping 20mil people in need, right?
Reality check, SoCal hospitals are closing due to the court mandated treatment of those laborers. It's great for businesses that they don't have to pay those health care costs! Guess who does? You do.
Reality check, yeah, I guess we should be thankful that we can pay $0.01 less on a tomato. BTW, you think the money saved from not having to pay for health care + other mandated Gov't laws (minimum wage) is going to you. Keep dreaming. The money saved is going to either big businesses or by thousands of ***** small business contractors that dont have one shred of caring for anyone but themselves. And I've personally met contractors who hire illegals and yes they are ***** through and through... - willcode4beer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11What pisses me off about these debates is that it comes down to "birth rights".
I thought, here in the US when we kicked out the Brits, that we were trying to create a system where "THE PEOPLE" are equal.
With this debate, people are given different rights based on where they are born. This is just crap.
I say, citizenship should have to be earned, regardless of where you were born. The fact that the majority of adults in the US know less about the history of the country and the functioning of government than any immigrant who has taken a test is truly sad. And they had to do nothing other than be born to become citizens. - pidge, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Point system? This is the government. Do you really expect the government to keep accurate track of the points? I understand from a international PR point of view, you can't send all illegals back home but I think this will just be another government blunder. While we are at it, can we please stop the loopwhole where anyone who is born here is automatically a citizen? At least one parent should have to be a citizen in order for a newborn to be granted citizenship automatically once he/she is born. I am hispanic so I am not someone who hates hispanics or something. My parents came here legally and I am sure many legal immigrants feel the same as I do.
- fight4yourright, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Here's a racist thought......Why don't the Mexicans fix their economy? Please don't say it's the United States fault....
- moracity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Passage of this bill will mark the beginning of the end of the United States of America. Low-end estimates project an additional 100 million legal immigrants through the proposed system over the next 20 years. This does not include the illegal immigration that will continue. The U.S economy simply cannot sustain that type of growth in only 20 years. It's taken over 200 years to get to 300 million. This is pure economics.
No other country in the world would ever introduce this type of immigration--because it's suicidal. They're all going to sit back and laugh while we decompose into a 3rd world country. Our nearly ideal 4.5% unemployment rate will skyrocket very quickly.
The one positive side is that we will probably have a Democrat in the Whitehouse soon. By the time the next elections come around, the disaster will be well on its way and we'll see another Republican takeover of the Whitehouse and Congress. Hopefully, the mistakes and Republican sell-out over the past few years will be remembered and not repeated. - dougbell, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Hopefully this is all a ploy.
They will get all the illegals to come forward for the "amnesty" and then as soon as the border fence is complete, they'll round them up and dump them in Tijuana.

2. 95% of warrants for murder in Los Angeles are for illegal aliens.
3. 75% of people on the most wanted list in Los Angeles are illegal aliens.
4. Over 2/3's of all births in Los Angeles County are to illegal alien Mexicans on Medi-Cal whose births were paid for by taxpayers.
5. Nearly 25% of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican nationals here illegally.
6. Over 300,000 illegal aliens in! Los Angeles County are living in garages.
7. The FBI reports half of all gang members in Los Angeles are most likely illegal aliens from south of the border.
8. Nearly 60% of all occupants of HUD properties are illegal.
9. 21 radio stations in L.A. are Spanish speaking.
10. In L. A. County 5.1 million people speak English. 3.9 million speak Spanish (10.2 million people in L. A. County).
(All 10 from the Los Angeles Times)
o Less than 2% of illegal aliens are picking our crops but 29% are on welfare.
o Over 70% of the United States annual population growth (and over 90% of California, Florida, and New York) results from immigration
o The cost of immigration to the American taxpayer in 1997 was a NET (after subtracting taxes immigrants pay) $70 BILLION a year, [Professor Donald Huddle, Rice University].
o The lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) for the average adult Mexican immigrant is a NEGATIVE
o 29% of inmates in federal prisons are illegal aliens.
o If they can come to this country to raise Hell and march by the thousands, why can't they take charge over the corruption in their own country?
We are a bunch of fools for letting this crap continue.
to this should be added the following:
1. mexico is not a poor country (compared to most, anyway). in fact, mexico has the fifth largest economy in the world and sits on a mountain of natural resources.
Check out the CIA's website about Mexico's economy; it reveals that Mexico's per capita income in 2005 was $10,100 compared to Russia-$9,800 or Bulgaria's at $8,100 or Bosnia-$6,500 --- (all quasi European countries).
Brazil's per capita was $8,100 and I don't see Brazilians flooding the US with claims they are starving and have no other choice.
Let's stop making Mexico out like there is mass starvation or no jobs whatsoever.
Mexico's economy did ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in business in 2005, not bad for a country that Bush claims is in such dire straights people must invade the US just to stay alive.
As I told someone else in another thread, my dad had a chemical company and did mucho business with Mexicans in Mexico, and he always marveled how people had the wrong impression of Mexico as this backward country with donkeys and siesta's all day and night.
I urge everyone here to do some investigations on your own about the economy and jobs available in Mexico.
One caveat. There are statistics claiming that 40-percent of Mexico is under the poverty line, but as we all know, in America people under the poverty line have two cars, two TV's, and are fat and happy, so take THAT statistic with a grain of salt
2. 80% of illegals already had jobs in Mexico when they left to invade this country. They just wanted a job that paid American wages; namely, our jobs. Good work if you can get it.
Goosestep 'em to the border, and catapult them over the wall. Fine and imprison the companies conspiring with them to destroy our country. Fire the politicos who have inflicted this on us. - Pfhreak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"The same people who don't want us to require ID for voting because people are to poor to buy IDs are also the same people saying we will fine the poor immigrants $5000 for being here illegally? WTF? Something isn't right here."
The people opposed to two forms of ID to vote aren't opposing because of "omgtehpoorpeeps", they oppose it because it violates the Voting Rights Act by desenfranchising voters. Even if you were correct that two forms of ID are opposed on grounds of poverty, there would still be no cognitive dissonance between supporting ones own citizens' (by ensuring they're not being disenfranchised at the voting booths) and opposing illegal immigrants (by heavily fining them, poor or not).
That said, I still think this is a useless gesture. We already know how to deal with immigration problems, Eisenhower showed us how. Operation Wetback, as un-PC as the name is, was very effective in combating illegal immigration: a massive program to round up illegal immigrants and dropping the Mexicans caught *deep* inside Mexico, instead of just across the border so they can try again later that same day. All other nationalities get dropped off in their own country, at a point as far from the US as possible.
On top of that, hit the enablers (which OW didn't do): random but extensive audits of the employers most likely to employ illegal immigrants, and fine them heavily instead of the undocumented workers. I'd say something > $10,000 a worker, so the fine outweighs what the employer is saving by hiring undocumented workers.
Finally, don't target "Mexican-looking" people, like OW did. Root out all illegal immigrants regardless of nationality or race. ("Hispanic" is not a race: there's a lot of African-descended and European-descended people living in Latin American countries, not all are of mixed Amerindian/European descent.) It needs to be an equal-opportunity deportation: keep an eye on deportation ratios, and if they're skewed from the illegal immigration ratios, take measures to ensure the immigration officers aren't discriminating. 57% of illegal immigrants are from Mexico, and 24% come from other Latin American countries, so about 81% should be getting deported to Latin American countries, but 9% of the deportees should be from Asian countries, 6% from Canada and European countries, and 4% from other countries (Africa and Oceania, basically). - scubajim, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9You are correct. The crackdown provision is BS also. If they don't secure the border in 18 months then the illegals get the z visa anyway. (some incentive)
- lordmike, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9"I wonder if they are going to give amnesty to all the other petty criminals in this Country."
I don't know... I think people in jail for smoking pot probably should get a break.
The problem lies entirely with Mexico. There is plenty of money in Mexico, but the Mexican state has no interest in helping its citizens. If Mexico wasn't letting their people rot and starve, there would be no impetus to risk live and limb to come here and work for pennies a day.
The focus on illegal immigration stars and ends with them, but few have the courage to say it. (irnically, loudmouth Joe Biden is)

So now, 30 million ***** who began their invasion of our country by breaking ours laws are going to rewarded with all the perks that come with citizenship. Swell. Are you all aware that a least 25 Americans are killed DAILY by illegal aliens? Are you aware that rather than "doing jobs Americans won't do" they consume more in services (welfare, health care etc.) than they give back. I favor George Carlin's solution to stopping illegal aliens coming here, I REFUSE to call it immigration! Carlin says we should ship 'em all to Iraq, if they want to stay in the US, become citizens etc. they'll fight for the US in Iraq. Can you imagine how fast illegals would vanish from our country. When I read that I laughed my ass off!
- jiggleflop, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Identity theft is illegal and everyone gets upset when someone gets their name stolen on ebay, but when Juan Valdez gets caught with an I.D. for Gunther Schmidt we are just supposed to ignore it because hes an immigrant?
I like immigrants, I work with legal immigrants, and lately, I've been thinking I might become an immigrant somewhere else.
12 million criminals, and I'm sure this deal isn't good enough, I expect the activist/rioters to start crying... 3... 2... 1... Whaa! Boo-hoo! - teleporter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6This is not about race, this is about national sovereignty and its exponential erosion.
We are on the verge of witnessing one of the final steps in paving the way for a North American Union. As long as the sovereignty of the United States as we know it--the most powerful and free nation--exists, it presents a huge roadblock in the ultimate goal. Couple this amnesty plan with the superhighway being built through the middle of the country to allow unrestricted travel from border to border--in the name of free trade--and the United States is all but finished. Canada's next, but they'll be a pushover--no offense to you Canadians; you're powerless to stop it just as we are in the United States.
We no longer have a government represented by the people, for the people, but rather a government represented by the corporation, for the corporation.
Enjoy your right to property, liberty, free speech, "low" taxes, and the pursuit of happiness while it lasts. - crash128, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Possibilities...
1. armed revolution. The gov't is acting at the behest of lobbyist groups, not the american people. Taxation without representation and all that. One million gun owners in each state willing to act would be a start. Probably won't happen.
Actually, all that would be needed for a little "jihad" would be a couple containers full of ak-47's, some ied's, a couple of stingers, and some stun grenades.
2. Third party candidates emerge. Maybe, but doubtful.
3. america becomes france-lite. I'd place my bet here. A socialist/communist construct. Can't wait for Hillary's socialized medicine. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8If you listen to today's Democracy Now at democracynow.org you'll hear that they want to use biometric identification in the immigration reform policy. This is the introduction to Real-ID.
