- ColRanger, on 09/15/2008, -0/+23No surprise MORE Palin stuff MORE abuse of power. There is no way that this Governor should be Vice President. McCain really made an error in this case and almost every case since he was voted to be a Nominee.
- aben9woaha, on 09/16/2008, -1/+23'"She's really done a lot of work on oil and gas, but when it comes to violence against women and children. . . we haven't been on her radar as a priority."
But guess who was working on "an ambitious...initiative to seriously tackle sex crimes"? The Department of Public Safety and fired Commissioner Walt Monegan was the plan's "chief proponent." - jesusisblack, on 09/16/2008, -0/+21This is a very important article. Please digg and share!
- writerswrite, on 09/16/2008, -0/+21Couple this with the despicable ad McCain ran implying that Barack Obama wanted to teach kindergarteners about sex (as opposed to what he REALLY wanted, which is to help children avoid sexual predators) and this is probably the most anti-feminist, amoral ticket that I can imagine. People had better wake up.
- DavidLRoth, on 09/16/2008, -0/+21This woman is FAR from qualified to be VP. Just imagine, one heartbeat away from PRESIDENT. If that isn't enough to scare you, you are insane. She's terrible.
- MsBrandon, on 09/15/2008, -0/+18She has 80% approval rate because she gave each Alaskan $1200, in addition to their Permanent Fund checks. She needed something to do with the Federal money she kept from the "Bridge to Nowhere".
Palin has already requested $198 million in earmarks for Alaska in next year's federal budget ... This for the richest state in the union. - hominidx, on 09/18/2008, -0/+13I'm willing to believe that many either don't know about this or realize the extent to which her influence on the situation made it more difficult for rape victims.
- truthfightsback, on 09/20/2008, -0/+13The undercurrent of these reports, which are being lost in the sensationalism of Troopergate press, is that the budgetary issues on which Monegan was not being a 'team player' were actually these efforts to secure funds for anti-abuse efforts. What's going on? Is it just circumstantial? Is it sexist to ask? We can hope not. The news may stay away, but we can be aware, and make rights activists we know aware also.
"Some members of Palin's administration were focused on the issue of
sexual violence. Officials in the Department of Public Safety were
devising an ambitious, multi-million-dollar initiative to seriously
tackle sex crimes in the state, but Palin's office put the plan on
hold in July.
Days later, Palin fired its chief proponent, Public Safety
Commissioner Walt Monegan, after he declined to dismiss a state
trooper Palin accused of threatening her own family members. Palin has
said she fired Monegan because she wanted to move his department in a
"new direction," and he was not being "a team player on budgeting
issues." The dismissal is now at the center of a hotly-contested
investigation by the state legislature.
The status of the plan, which would have "fast-tracked" sex crime
cases via a dedicated group that included specially-trained
investigators, judges and prosecutors, is unknown. "I'd ask the
governor," said one official with knowledge of the plan. Numerous
inquiries to Palin's campaign spokeswoman went unreturned." - MindyB, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12And add the fact that while Palin was mayor, the police department CHARGED rape victims for the forensic rape exam (the "rape Kit" needed to catch and convict a suspected rapist). This rule of charging rape victims for their own forensic examination has since been eliminated by the current mayor of Wasilla.
Palin is a piece of work, if anything she is one of the most sexist women I've ever heard of!
Oh, and McCain has voted repeatedly AGAINST instituting a federal fund to pay for rape kits throughout the country; he has voted against the crime bills that included violence against women acts; he has voted repeatedly against the National Domestic Violence Hotline!
They are both sexist pigs!
McCain/Palin??Thanks But No Thanks!
Vote for Obama/Biden! - jgersten, on 09/16/2008, -1/+13Having the first woman to hold one of the top 2 positions of power in this country be someone who is pro-life and a member of the NRA is the worst possible scenario. This just adds to the many reasons why McCain winning is so horrifying.
- Zuzu2, on 09/19/2008, -0/+12More than one Alaskan has said if you took a poll more recently, you would get a lot lower numbers. Especially now.
- PHiZ187, on 09/20/2008, -0/+5This is how the conservatives deal with sex issues. They thick that they are icky, and they sweep them under the rug. Out of sight, out of mind. Meanwhile, Alaska is one of the worst states for sexual abuse of women and children.
- nanoscare, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4But but but, she took on the oil companies and got me another $1200 check from the guvment.
- Zuzu2, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5The state legislature had to mandate that local agencies pay for rape kits, specifically in response to Wasilla's refusal to do so.
Remember that these rape kits include emergency contraception. Remember also that Palin thinks women should be forced to bear their rapists' babies.
(That may be one reason why her spokeswoman simply says that Palin did not believe that rape victims should have to pay for "an evidence-gathering test." ) - johnnr2, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4http://digg.com/politics/New_Doubts_Over_Palin_s_T ...
Seems Sarah was for Monegan's trip to DC re: rape/sexual abuse before she was against it! She is guilty as sin and thinks she's Heaven-sent - truly dangerous. - MediaWeasel, on 09/20/2008, -0/+3Secrecy in government, secrecy in issues over women's rights and safety, secrecy on Troopergate .. etc etc etc etc etc etc
This is what you'd get with Palin as VP. Do people really not get this? I'm speechless. - thepoliticalcat, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2Actually, her approval rating is in the 60s and dropping. As you would know if you read the Alaska newspapers and blogs.
- chaosium, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1"Yet she has an 80% approval rating as Governor of Alaska. "
Not anymore! - thepoliticalcat, on 09/21/2008, -0/+1If it were "only" sexual abuse of women and children, that would be bad enough. Alaska also happens to be Number Two of the fifty states for domestic violence against women that results in murder. The second highest murder rate in the country -- for women.
- inactive, on 09/20/2008, -4/+0No doubt the democrat party is going to put tremendous pressure on this committee to do as much political damage as possible. And the republicans are equally going to do everything possible to stop or delay the investigation. If the public safety commissioner serves at the pleasure of the Governor, then the Governor (any Governor) has the right to hire and fire the person filling that position. Justification isn’t necessary, but she fired him when he refused a transfer to another position.
- tjoiner, on 09/15/2008, -13/+3Yet she has an 80% approval rating as Governor of Alaska. So those 80% are for sexual abuse, rape, domestic violence and murder? Or maybe ABC News is holding her to an impossible standard. Which makes more sense?
