- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -25/+204Bush wants to socialize losses and privatize profits.
That is the 21st century version of Republican Communism. - jamesfaction, on 07/17/2008, -21/+174Congress and the Senate flips Bush the bird and sticks up for the little guy! I wish that happened more often.
- wangalicious, on 07/17/2008, -7/+112Wait....Congress didn't further his agenda? It's getting a little cold under my feet.
- relic180, on 07/17/2008, -7/+62As in, more than this one time in the last 7.5 years?
- relic180, on 07/17/2008, -6/+56Actually it's not really anything like Communism.
It's the 21st century version of Modern Capitalism, or Corporatism. - tim04, on 07/17/2008, -19/+68finally Congress begins to stamp down Bush's frequent and ridiculous vetoes.
- tasine, on 07/17/2008, -8/+40I have to wonder if at least half of the posters on this article have even a vague notion what this bill really means. I am 69 years old and am forced to be on Medicare. I have opposed it since before Medicare was enacted. I knew it led to socialized medicine and sure enough, 45 years later libs are trying to jam it down our throats. And I still hate the idea of Medicare.
In 1964 I had sense enough to know the federal government had no legitimate business messing around with medical care, and I have enough sense now to know how very right I was. There is no health care crisis in this country - hasn't been since my birth in 1938. Before libs stepped up to overthrow the US Constitution by taking on what was not constitutionally granted the Congress the poor were taken care of, taken care of by the same people who took care of all the other patients. Most didn't have insurance, Medicaid didn't exist, and Medicare didn't exist ...... but the poor never had to go without decent medical care. You can argue with me, but you can't change facts. But, to muddle things up in the medical field, Congress decided that it was demeaning for people to have to admit they couldn't afford a hospital stay (in which case they could have stayed for free), and so decided to steal money from those who had more money in order to make the poorer feel better ...... NOT to get better medical service. I HATE the concept of Medicare, I think it is wrong, and I do not trust a huge government to administer my health care. Because, and hear me well, when the taxpayers' money runs out, and the government is running your health system, it is the government who will make the medical decisions for you ..... not your doctor and not you. Do not expect compassion, do not expect logical decisions, do not expect mercy as these assets do not exist within the government. Those of you who hate various government programs, I ask how in the world can you trust these same people to give you good health care!!!! - earnjam, on 07/17/2008, -12/+42Great, pay doctors even less for treating those on Medicare. What so many people don't realize is that for many doctors, it actually costs money to treat patients who are on Medicare or Medicaid.
We need some serious work on our Healthcare system. Tort reform and cracking down on the insurance companies' sleazy tactics would be a start. - inactive, on 07/17/2008, -1/+29Good job Congress....don't bother fixing the ***** problem, just slap a band-aid on it for a little while and leave it for the next group of do-nothings.
Veto or not, this bill was a joke. It would be nice if they actually tackled problems with Medicare, rather than parading these "cute little gestures" out for the public. Then again, why would they, they've got another vacation coming up. - mrsteveman1, on 07/17/2008, -0/+28Lunch dates. Congress likes mexican food, Bush doesn't.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -10/+38Just because Ron Paul voted for something doesn't mean it's right.
- Shabow, on 07/17/2008, -11/+38Don't worry, Bush will find some way around this. A new executive order perhaps?
- roho76, on 07/17/2008, -5/+31Welfare is not in the Constitution. Don't get me wrong It was the right thing to do at this point in time, considering we already have these older people hooked on medicare. But please don't say the "Constitutionalists" are getting what they want. The proper thing to do would be to not tax the people, and do real health care reform to bring down the costs.
- relic180, on 07/17/2008, -7/+33You say it like "little guy" doesn't include you. Do you even know who the little guy in America really is? Roughly 99% of the population.
- EvilDr.X, on 07/17/2008, -0/+24FTA "Tuesday's votes marked the fourth time in his two terms that Bush has had a veto overturned by Congress."
Does anyone know what the other three overturned vetoes were? - inactive, on 07/17/2008, -9/+33Because my grandmother is too old to get a job that gives health insurance and her dead husband's pension money coupled with her small pension is barely enough for her to survive. Medicare allows her to at least be healthy, something which is a human right. None of us in our family can take care of her because we're all struggling ourselves. My sister's house was foreclosed because they got a predatory loan, my mother lost her job and is finding it difficult to get a new one, and, oh yeah, none of us have health insurance. Most of my family is conservative, and they are ALL for universal healthcare.
- ftx437, on 07/17/2008, -18/+40why should it be the governments job to provide health care? i thought it was supposed to be
people->local government->state government->federal government
not the other way around. - thebellmaster1x, on 07/17/2008, -3/+24...Er. The paying doctors less is actually exactly what was vetoed here. Bush wanted doctors to be paid less. Congress said nay.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -32/+53Countries that have real national health programs don't have to worry about stupid crap like this. They have medical systems that work. There is a reason that the USA ranks below Costa Rica, Dominica and Chile in health care.
http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html - gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -42/+62and another loss for the taxpayers of America
- Rentro, on 07/17/2008, -13/+33Right. No one on Medicare has ever paid any taxes.
- BadseedJR, on 07/17/2008, -2/+20You do realize that they repealed the cuts to doctors... right?
"By enacting the measure over Bush's objections, Congress rescinded an 11 percent reduction in government payments to doctors" - SmokedL, on 07/17/2008, -0/+17Communism is on the extreme left, while "socialize losses and privatize profits." is on the extreme right of the left-right scale.
I for one am getting tired of people labeling anything they disagree with as being communism.
It's just a tad annoying when the thing described happens to be almost exactly the opposite of communism, as it is in this case.
For all those out there that simply equate communism with evil without any real definition, please read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism
Now i disagree with capital punishment, and also with communism. That does not make capital punishment communism. - iridesce, on 07/17/2008, -14/+30The Constitutionalists take a deep breath - hopefully not the last
- roddack, on 07/17/2008, -8/+24Looks over Article 1 Section 8. Yep I still don't see health care in that list.
Oh that's right now one cares about the constitution unless it furthers their own ends.
The problem with health care is people want it to cover everything then get mad when the cost shoots up. Can you imagine how expensive your car insurance would be if it covered Oil changes and Fill-ups? - Takfam, on 07/17/2008, -2/+17Well, I can think of a way to defray some of that cost, but it involves the U.S. leaving brown people on the other side of the world alone.
- 33PercentGod, on 07/17/2008, -5/+20I feel bad for the person cleaning up after Bush threw his temper tantrum.
- executorzz, on 07/17/2008, -7/+21Why not? I can think of 9 trillion reasons. If you think an expensive war is bad for the budget wait until you see the bill for government financed healthcare.
- SammyJr, on 07/17/2008, -11/+26@billybillyboy - "I just don't know how people got along before programs like Medicare and Social Security."
Poorly. That's why they were implemented in the first place. Its not like everyone was living high on the hog and just decided to create Medicare and Social Security for the fun of it. - homercles337, on 07/17/2008, -3/+17Frequent? He never used the veto once in first 6 years with the rubber stamp repug congress. Since the dems have taken a majority he is on a roll with 8. Is that what you mean by "frequent?"
- roddack, on 07/17/2008, -18/+31Because you know I love having to wait 6months to get a surgery that could save my life because their system is just so effective.
Lets not talk about how in places like the UK with their oh so great health care people that can afford too leave the country to get surgery done, or how people in Canada come to the US for procedures because the waiting list in these countries are just stupid long.
Oh and lets not talk about how health care cost in these countries are spiraling out of control because you know what its for the little man who instead of working harder to pay for a service instead has decided its better if someone else does the work for him and foots the bill. - papastout, on 07/17/2008, -6/+19I suppose they'll do anything to get that congressional approval rating out of the single digits eh?
you know, like doing something right... - executorzz, on 07/17/2008, -0/+13A better idea would be to crack down on doctors and suppliers that use OUR Medicaire/Medicaid taxes as a personal ATM.
Doctors and suppliers charge higher prices for similar services and items because in their view it isn't hurting anyone. - Boohickey11, on 07/17/2008, -15/+28Just so all you idiots know, this bill was voted against by Ron Paul.
Just because a Bush veto is overridden doesn't mean it's a good thing. - roddack, on 07/17/2008, -0/+13http://www.cma.ca/multimedia/CMA/Content_Images/In ...
But I am sure it is just voodoo economics to you and of course since it isn't your source it must be a evil right wing conspiracy source - Enigmocracy, on 07/17/2008, -11/+24If you had actually known people that live in Canada or the UK or any other country with Universal healthcare (Which is, by the way, every single developed one), you would know that long waiting lists are the exception, not the rule. You go into the ER with a broken leg or something and you'll be treated within an hour or 2. If you have a lump or spot that you think may be cancer, they ENCOURAGE you to call them up and you'll be checked out in a couple days, if that. "6 months" is just some garbage number by neocons that love Insurance companies too much to make sensible decisions.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -9/+21I would choose private over government any day. What is your obsession with the government taking care of you? Did your parents fail at teaching you responsibility?
- Hockey13, on 07/17/2008, -6/+18It's not even remotely "capitalism." Just because you stick the word "modern" on the front of it doesn't make it more correct.
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -12/+25"I just don't know how people got along before programs like Medicare and Social Security."
They died. - inactive, on 07/17/2008, -6/+18It's like communism in that it starts from an ideological end-point and constructs arguments backwards to reflect that ideological "truth."
Plus, like communism, it doesn't work in reality. - roddack, on 07/17/2008, -0/+12P0peRatz0 both parties ignore the Constitution unless it suits their interest it has been that way ever since the civil war
- roddack, on 07/17/2008, -2/+14http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=1 ...
For the Canadian wait times
But I am sure that won't be good enough for you because it again shows that you have no leg to stand on. - roddack, on 07/17/2008, -7/+18typical Canadian seeking surgical or other therapeutic treatment had to wait 18.3 weeks in 2007 - an all-time high. About 875,000 Canadians are currently on waiting lists for medical treatment.
Many Canadians can't even get routine care. Of those who sought routine or ongoing care in 2005, one in six had trouble even getting into a doctor's office for a routine procedure or check-up.
It's no better across the Atlantic. The average wait time for bypass surgery in New York is 17 days - compared to 72 days
Patients with serious illnesses like cancer face much longer odds of survival in government-run healthcare systems. In the U.K., the five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with breast cancer early on is 78 percent - compared to 98 percent for similar patients in the U.S. - roddack, on 07/17/2008, -1/+12For what purpose could the enumeration of particular powers be inserted, if these and all others were meant to be included in the preceding general power? Nothing is more natural nor common than first to use a general phrase, and then to explain and qualify it by a recital of particulars. But the idea of an enumeration of particulars which neither explain nor qualify the general meaning, and can have no other effect than to confound and mislead, is an absurdity -Madison

- Wargalas, on 07/17/2008, -7/+17And this is why our deficit is as high as it is. No one wants to CUT spending, only increase it.
- Aadain, on 07/17/2008, -8/+19@billybillyboy
They lived very, very poorly, with most elderly people dying in poverty and homeless. So called compassionate conservatives decry Medicare and SS as wasteful welfare programs, but they have greatly increased the life expectancy and quality of life for seniors in our country, all while being cheaper to administrate than private health care programs. You want to know who the real welfare queens are? Big businesses taking substities while pulling in record profits and profit margins. - T654ii, on 07/17/2008, -14/+24Thanks to this, Congress' approval rating should move out of the single digits.
- roddack, on 07/17/2008, -0/+9If we wish to preserve a free society, it is essential that we recognize that the desirability of a particular object is not sufficient justification for the use of coercion. -Hayek
