- acroyear2, on 09/04/2008, -10/+186That was certainly one of the dumbest things she has said. Seriously. One of the most profound failures of the republican culture (not political ideaology however) is this notion that giving, caring, and doing things for your fellow man is some sort of "bleeding heart" trait that they feel compelled to stand against. It stems obviously from the political stand point that government should not be involved with social programs but the fact that it morphs into this level of idiocy is insane.
The fact that this elected official (not their supporters) would actually belittle the activities of people who try to empower the people on the ground floor I believe actually goes against some of the foundational claims of the republican party. IF ITS ABOUT SMALL GOVERNMENT then it should be about EMPOWERING THE PEOPLE outside of government (2nd ammendent?). But this party has nothing to do with helping the people...
Even on the state level, I can only imagine a red state using the tired boostrap axiom as an excuse to not help poor schools in poorer districts.
Although many of these institutions survive off of government grants I don't hear any other proposals from the republicans on how to handle these matters. - michaelpinto, on 09/04/2008, -5/+111"I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I will ask every member of my government to become involved. The old ideas are new again because they are not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in."

- acroyear2, on 09/04/2008, -7/+62"How's about instead of debating the relative merits of community organizing, the candidates take a cue from community organizers and start talking about the real problems Americans are facing and the real solutions we need? Maybe then candidates could make as valuable of a contribution to our nation as community organizers are making every day!"

That's where the real deal is. Right there. - stonecircle, on 06/11/2009, -7/+61A Presidential contender with Anger Management issues, a Loose Canon running for VP… can it get any worse?
- bradharrelson, on 09/05/2008, -7/+55Pretty insulting to anyone helping out people across the country.
An excerpt from Obama's Wiki entry for those not knowledgeable on the subject:
"After four years in New York City, Obama moved to Chicago to work as a community organizer for three years from June 1985 to May 1988 as director of the Developing Communities Project (DCP), a church-based community organization originally comprising eight Catholic parishes in Greater Roseland (Roseland, West Pullman, and Riverdale) on Chicago's far South Side.[12][14] During his three years as the DCP's director, its staff grew from 1 to 13 and its annual budget grew from $70,000 to $400,000, with accomplishments including helping set up a job training program, a college preparatory tutoring program, and a tenants' rights organization in Altgeld Gardens.[15] Obama also worked as a consultant and instructor for the Gamaliel Foundation, a community organizing institute.[16] "
Just more trashy attack rhetoric from the right. Hopefully the debates will focus on the real issues and they will get slammed with FACTS, FACTS, FACTS. - Fremen93, on 09/05/2008, -5/+48I got the same impression from their speeches. Apparently caring for one another, isn't something they believe in. Which is so odd, because I could have sworn that was one of the biggest things about the christian religion....isn't caring for one another part of the religion?? Did they change to some other religion recently?
- Fouad34, on 09/05/2008, -4/+41I'm a community organizer in Philadelphia and when I listen to these clips of Palin belittling my efforts (http://www.entertonement.com/clips/22206/Sarah-Pal ... it really pisses me off. It's not the most glamorous job in the world, but I make a difference in people's lives. It was ironic watching McCain's speech tonight where he went on and on about service - don't they get the fact that we're in the trenches serving our fellow Americans?
- BossKey, on 09/05/2008, -1/+38Why does Palin hate America?
- kyyv, on 09/05/2008, -4/+40Remember – Jesus was a community organizer, and Pontius Pilatus was a governor.
- TheXeno, on 09/05/2008, -3/+37"The last thing we need is for Republican officials to mock us on television when we’re trying to rebuild the neighborhoods they have destroyed."
Ouch. - acroyear2, on 09/04/2008, -1/+30Instilling power into community organizations should be a tenet of any political party. This modern repug/neo-con party is absolute _failure.
- acroyear2, on 09/05/2008, -2/+29Have you ever worked in a community organization? Clearly you haven't. Also, do you have any proof that Obama was involved in the corrupt practices of ACORN? Also, "proud" is spelled with a 'u'.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -6/+33Her and Giuliani should try it sometime rather than criticize it. Anyone watch the Colbert Report? Completely smoked all those 'joking' remarks from those two.
- ErickStevenson, on 09/05/2008, -5/+32What happened to the Republican party? You know back then they weren't this bad, but the new Republican party after GW jr. this party has changed into something horrible. No one really knows what they stand for anymore. What I feel sorry for is that they let these people into their party and let them take control. So sad, for all of us here in America.
- kylerg, on 09/05/2008, -3/+29Don't community organizers help get these people elected? Way to smear your own helpers.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -5/+30I thought it was at the center of Christian values to help the poor, feed the starving, try to tend the sick? I have read the NT many times, and this is all Jesus goes on about.
Suddenly, according to these horrible, awful human beings, it's a bad thing. Christ had a lot to say about hypocrites - he hated them. It was his worst insult for people. How can these bastards use the Bible to bolster their political platform and spit in the face of Christian values so obviously, and why do Christian voters fall for it? - jmanfivek, on 09/05/2008, -6/+30If Palin is so great at problem solving, why can't she solve the problem of writing her own speech?
- MorganMghee, on 09/05/2008, -1/+24I've said it before, the people holding the Republican stick aren't Republican any longer, they don't hold American values, and if they would actually read the bible, they'd find they aren't even Christian.
- jayfarer, on 09/05/2008, -3/+26Community Organizers are the people who spend their time trying to change the lives of the people around them, one-on-one. They are doing the work that others cannot or will not.
This is about Republican elitism. This is about fueling the culture wars. Guys like Giuliani and Palin think "community organizing" isn't a real job because it doesn't pay six figures and you don't wear a suit every day. It saves people one at a time, and that's infinitely more important than trying to get hunting wolves from helicopters made legal. - glasnostic, on 09/05/2008, -0/+22not my words but they made me laugh..
"somebody should tell Sarah that Jesus was a Community Organizer, Pontius Pilate was a Governor." - akirashimablue, on 09/05/2008, -3/+22Definitely fired one off to the campaign about community organizing as a American Tradition. Boston Tea Party, the American Revolution with the militia groups, the Abolitionist movement, the Underground Railroad, Women's Suffrage, the Civil Rights Movement, Environmentalism, and even the Obama Campaign all have seen their success because of community organizing. It is the grassroots level that has allowed Obama, African-Americans, minorities, women, and this country to come so far. Sarah Palin can't diminish that work, but in that statement she reveals how she just doesn't get what makes this country great. It is the freedoms our citizens have made for themselves and not what they were given. It is the work that we have done for ourselves when our governments ignored the moral right. We come together to make the lives of our friends and neighbors better. Community organizers aren't given responsibilities, they take them, take them up when their government fails them often seeing no financial return other than the betterment of their community, state, country, and every once in a while the World. Don't tell me that community organizer do not make a difference. Don't tell me Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, John Brown, and Harriet Tubman did not make a difference.
- NyteStarNyne, on 09/05/2008, -2/+20Wasn't she in beauty pageants around that time? What was her responsibilities then?
- BossKey, on 09/05/2008, -0/+18"Jesus was a community organizer, and Pontius Pilate was the governor."
- sapphire9488, on 09/05/2008, -5/+23That one line pissed me off so bad- but also motivated me like never before.
Since I was young, I've watched my mom spend hours a day volunteering and working together with locals. She helped form a nonprofit organization that helps families with bills when they need it the most. For months now, she's spent weekends registering new voters and informing them of their rights. My family wouldn't even be considered lower middle class, but still my mom would rather dedicate her life to service and helping those less fortunate. For over 12 yeasr, she's worked her ass off as a community organizer and hasn't recieved a cent for it. And you'd better believe she has responsibilities.
I couldn't believe the level of disrespect Sarah Palin and Rudy Guiliani showed to people like my mom, ordinary citizens that don't have thousands to throw at random charities but dedicate their life and countless hours to help others and make a difference. After their insults, the crowds burst into laughter. I was offended.
But, that's okay- instead of being bitter about it, I dropped off a $150 check to the local Obama campaign HQ yesterday. I'd never made a donation before then. Yeah, Palin is such a ***** that I actually gave up my own cash partly to spite her. - seltaeb4, on 09/05/2008, -3/+20I hope all Republicans remember how she feels about community organizers when the local Party office calls up and asks for help with phone banking, precinct walking, lawn sign delivery...
- sugarazor, on 09/05/2008, -4/+21Is it really any surprise coming from Palin? She's a complete ***** who is pretty much clueless about what goes on outside of Alaska. They probably don't have a lot of community organizers up there since their communities are about 1/20 the size of those that Obama worked in twenty years ago. Barack Obama put "country first" one neighborhood at a time, Palin was just in the right place at the right time.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -2/+19Seriously, it kind of is beginning to seem like Bush was just a warm up for the insanity the Republican party wants to unleash on the world.
- enclaved, on 09/05/2008, -0/+16While reading that, the only thing playing in my mind was Dana Carvey
can't find the right clip, but
George Bush: Let me sum up. On track, stay the course. Thousand points of light.
Diane Sawyer: Governor Dukakis. Rebuttal?
Michael Dukakis: I can't believe I'm losing to this guy! - thecwin, on 09/05/2008, -1/+16That is, I find, the biggest inconsistency in most neo-con beliefs. They seem to hate anything that might help other people, particularly those less fortunate than themselves (for example, free healthcare, better public services, etc.). Yet they also try to force everyone to follow a religion that's core tenet is love other people, care for other people, especially less fortunate people. Good samaritan and all that...
- webergolf, on 09/05/2008, -1/+16Well, they probably saw that Scientology can just make ***** up and brainwash people so they figured 'hey why not give that technique a shot'
- tramblings, on 09/05/2008, -3/+18Yea. I'm glad they're speaking up for themselves. That was a low blow. I never had much appreciation for what a community organizer does until reading this but it sounds like they work tirelessly to make the lives of lower income workers better. Way to kick them in the head, Palin.
- ErickStevenson, on 09/05/2008, -2/+16These people are allergic to FACTS.
- thespiff, on 09/05/2008, -0/+14Best quote from the TP comments:
Shayne:
"Hey, she only got interested in special needs children now that there’s one in her family. Maybe when she’s out in the street she’ll start respecting community organizers." - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -6/+20My girlfriend is a community organizer and I will be the first to tell you it's because she cares about her community, state and country. She was making $25-$30 an hour as a waitress and now shes makes $16 an hour doing this (WITH A B.A.). Think about that for a second. Certainly a charismatic and intelligent speaker (lets not forget lawyer) like Obama could be wealthy if he choose to be?
People take the position of community organizer because they give a ***** about this country. Suck on my balls lady. - sugarazor, on 09/05/2008, -1/+14Yes, she has so much experience as mayor of a town where 650 people voted for her. She may as well have been my high school class president, she would have had a bigger constituency... more responsibilities too.
- deadonbroadway, on 09/05/2008, -3/+15Great idea Palin! Lets demean the people who basically helped build this country!
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -1/+13Yeah many are, but those of us that aren't are trying desperately to take our country back from them. Obama isn't perfect but I think he's the best shot we have at bringing some sanity back to our nation.
- allengeer, on 09/05/2008, -1/+13wow that's so terribly wrong and misinformed its mind boggling. if you bothered to read his books you would know that he worked for the "Developing Communities Project" which was basically a group formed by a bunch of south side churches looking to help their communities rebuild after massive steel mill layoffs. you ignorant ***** are a cancer to free thinking.
- jmanfivek, on 09/05/2008, -0/+12nixfu's thought process: "acroyear2? hmmm...ACORN, ACRO? Coincidence?!"
- 47f0, on 09/05/2008, -0/+12"The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan. As soon as you sacrifice this slogan and try to be many-sided, the effect will piddle away, for the crowd can neither digest nor retain the material offered. In this way the result is weakened and in the end entirely cancelled out."
Mein Kampf - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -5/+17Try a little humility sometime, Republicans.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+12The Right Wing *invented* that technique. Scientology is a latecomer to the game, my friend.
- aussiejan, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9The opinion expressed by hiriumi is understandable. Those of us that live in the Rest of the World cannot understand how the likes of Bush and McCain keep getting elected. People like Gore, Kerry and Obama who express themselves with intelligence and compassion are met with derision from the Republicans. It is illogical and incomprehensible to us.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9Because they profess to be pro-life, creationist and small government; and that's all some rural Christians want. It's a contradiction, you know: dictate my medical options, create a state religion AND have small government. It's not possible. It's also *****. They only profess these thing to fool the feeble minded. In truth they have no morals, no faith, only one guiding point: the unbridled lust for power.
- Tonamel, on 09/05/2008, -1/+10The repub belief is more in line with "give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime." Though somewhere along the line they seem to have forgotten that if you don't give him fish while he's still learning, he'll starve to death.
And while Jesus was an advocate of helping your fellow man, he didn't seem to be a big fan of meaningless charity. "There will be poor always," and whatnot. - mj34, on 09/05/2008, -3/+12More ammo for Obama, I hope he makes use of it, I think its got some staying power.
- VinnieDaMac, on 09/05/2008, -4/+13Saying community organizers have no responsibilities is different than pointing out that being a small town mayor isn't enough to qualify someone to become VP.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+10"And the Pharisees asked of Jesus:
'Rabbi, which of the laws is the greatest?'
And Jesus spoke, saying:
'First, Love the Lord thy God with all of thy strength, all of thy heart and all of thy mind; and this also: Love thy neighbor as thy Love thyself, for on these two the whole of the law rests.' - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+10what?
