- kyravon, on 06/02/2009, -12/+562Wait, the writer called his 2006 White House Correspondant speech a "gaffe".... why?
It was in no way a gaffe. Does that person need a dictionary?
It was brilliantly scripted. The only gaffe was maybe the person who invited him who didn't get the joke! - stoanhart, on 06/02/2009, -12/+546FTA: "Perhaps his most public gaffe was his 2006 performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner"
That was no ***** gaffe; that was completely intentional and pure gold. - scottknick, on 06/01/2009, -45/+458Theory of Mind is a well known developmental milestone. It involves being able to distinguish what a person has in mind based on his or her expressions and actions. It allows the child to detect deception, sarcasm, etc. Generally you develop it by age 4.
But I guess Conservatives are developmentally stuck in toddlerhood. Explains a lot.
[Fun fact to know and tell: one of the important researchers in the Theory of Mind is Simon Baron-Cohen, Sacha's cousin]. - looopy, on 06/02/2009, -5/+286holy hell, the submitter's profile picture is frightening
- TheHerk, on 06/02/2009, -4/+161Precisely what I was thinking. Gaffe? It was genius. One of the best political speeches I've ever heard. Sure he was being the court jester, but intentionally.
- Barnstormer, on 06/02/2009, -14/+165So he's like Beggin' Strips: dogs don't know it's not bacon!
- CyclonusRIP, on 06/02/2009, -3/+128Ya I think maybe the writer didn't get the joke. Colbert knew what he was doing the whole time, he was probably just amazed they actually let him get away with it. That was like his crowning achievement. You've got the most powerful man in the world 2 seats to your left and you break his balls for like a 20 minute speech. I doubt any of us will ever get the chance to do anything that awesome let alone take it and run with it like he did if it does present itself.
- TheUngod, on 06/02/2009, -26/+136Apparently the educated understand sarcasm better.
- geodebug, on 06/02/2009, -2/+97Well, Fox and bushies describe it as a gaffe because they weren't laughing. But I don't think Colbert was going for ha, ha funny - he was there to settle some scores. I will always respect Colbert and his enormous iron balls for doing what he did. For me, it was a ray of sunshine in a dark, depressing time.
- solecize, on 06/02/2009, -10/+94When you stop using words like "libtard"
- offrdbandit, on 06/02/2009, -5/+87I'm curious why the study mentioned was not referenced and only mentioned passingly, despite the fact it was the premise for the entire article.
- Takfam, on 06/02/2009, -14/+91Let's be honest, it's entirely possible he could say the same thing about Liberals and be 100% serious. Stephen Colbert is a question, wrapped in an enigma, soaked in mystery, with a bear-repellant candy coating.
- AndrewMoyer, on 06/02/2009, -1/+77Did Ann Coulter have a baby with a raccoon...?
- Hetman, on 06/02/2009, -10/+85Awesome another liberterian. I have not seen many republicans since januarary but for some odd reason there has been a ***** ton of people calling themselfs liberterian. You know if there was that many of you in november bob barr would have probably recieved more than 3% of the votes in America.
- Indiscipline, on 06/02/2009, -4/+77Did you read the *first* line?
- readacook, on 06/02/2009, -4/+71Whatever. This study was in a journal, and I don't trust journals. They're just a collection of words and facts. I trust my gut.
- FredFredrickson, on 06/02/2009, -2/+64Yeah, I remember watching that and thinking to myself, "does Bush & Co. realize that Colbert is not for real?"
Everyone at the dinner seemed like they didn't realize he was a comedian until that dinner. It was both brutal and awesome. - alpharaptor, on 06/02/2009, -0/+60how did the raccoon manage to carry the baby?
- TheNik, on 06/02/2009, -6/+63When is Rush Limbaugh being sarcastic? Everything he says _should_ be sarcasm, but I'm relatively certain it never is...
- Smokeydabear, on 06/02/2009, -11/+66I guess you don't get the joke. He's pretty liberal, but he plays a super conservative dude on the show. It's mocking conservatives all the time on the show, and people don't get that he isn't serious. You're on of those people.
- twiztidsinz, on 06/02/2009, -6/+55Shhhhhhhhhhhhh...
Don't spoil it! - datdamonfoo, on 06/02/2009, -3/+50@Granfalloon
Except Winston Churchill never said that. - Mootabolife, on 06/02/2009, -10/+54I think it's a testament to how conservatives have adjusted to the past 8 years of Bush. You can now put a comedian on the air who is so far right as to be ridiculous, but no one seems to notice with how far things have been stretched in real politics.
- ShingoEX, on 06/02/2009, -2/+45Anyone on either side who doesn't realize it's solely political satire is a moron.
- raydeen, on 06/02/2009, -1/+44Good God, kill it with fire!
- mwilhelm, on 06/02/2009, -9/+51I hate to beat a dead horse - but please make the distinction between conservatives as an ideology and republicans as a political party.
Republicans have hijacked the conservative value system, and politicized a number of religious talking points and irrelevant social stances - but are in absolutely NO way conservative or exhibit true conservative values.
Conservatism is protecting the environment (environmental CONSERVation...?) at the expense of industry.
Conservatism is protecting the inherent rights and liberties of all people in the face of liberal assault (gay rights).
Conservatism is making prudent and informed decisions to appropriately fund our programs on the forefront to save money in the long run.
Conservatism is protecting the needs of the individual against the tyranny of fascist corporate interest.
Conservatism is living within your means. (Bush's deficits...).
Conservatism is also the natural state of physical and biological evolution. Is it called the "liberation of angular momentum"? Look at every observation of our natural world and know that energy and effort are conserved in a harmonious balance that ebbs and flows with changing conditions. The only prevalent concept that continues Change is the conservation of such.
The republican party is nothing more than a corrupted core of neo-liberal mercantile politics founded on liberal economic theory that campaigns on tenants of a traditionalist christian belief system. The differences between Republicans and Democrats are about the same as the differences between Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill... If you've never read; Wikipedia that ***** and find out that all major accepted economic theory stems from the same fallacious concept of individual responsibility to a sovereignty. Nothing has changed in 400 years, INCLUDING hereditary rite.
I think, if a majority of self-proclaimed liberals sat next to someone with true liberal values, you/we would all look very "conservative" by comparison. - novenator, on 06/02/2009, -11/+52I still with the man would have ran as a Republican in the SC primary. I bet he would have raked in 10% of the vote in a very crowded field
- ThugThrasher, on 06/02/2009, -8/+48I've been a Libertarian for years. (Capital L meaning I'm in the party)
However, I didn't vote for Barr. Because I disagreed with him on some issues that are very important to me.
Guess what? Just because you are a Libertarian does NOT mean you had to vote for Bob Barr. Just like not all Republicans voted for Mccain and not all Democrats voted for Obama. - otbeverly, on 06/02/2009, -5/+44@KJeffV: No, that's just the Neocons, who are the ones Colbert is really making fun of. Too bad that for most people, Neocon might as well be conservative. This is what happens when you mix hyperbole and labels so now progressive=liberal=Democrat and Neocon=conservative=Republican.
If only it were that simple. - effex100, on 06/02/2009, -3/+36Here's a link to an article that goes pretty deeply into the findings of the referenced study.
http://www.miller-mccune.com/politics/the-truthine ...
FTA:
"The Ohio State University), subjected 322 participants with a mix of political ideologies to a three-minute 2006 video clip of Stephen Colbert discussing media coverage of the Iraq war with "super liberal lefty" radio host Amy Goodman.
They then asked participants to evaluate Colbert's ideology and his attitude towards liberalism. What they found was that the more liberal participants reported their own ideology to be, the more liberal they thought Colbert was. And the more conservative they reported their own ideology to be, the more conservative they thought Colbert was. Both, however, found him equally funny. The results are published in the April edition of the International Journal of Press/Politics." - twiztidsinz, on 06/02/2009, -10/+42Those stupid college-educated libuuuurrrrlllls
- yunus, on 06/02/2009, -2/+32They thought he would kiss butt.
They were wrong. - burntcookie90, on 06/02/2009, -1/+29From his bio "Don't let the picture scare you. Screaming progressive/liberal dude here."
too late dude...too late - otbeverly, on 06/02/2009, -1/+28Damn you, Doritos! Damn you to Hell!
- Hetman, on 06/02/2009, -9/+36Colbert The great conservative or the greatest conservative?
- malex, on 06/02/2009, -4/+30CharlieShipp here demonstrates the very textbook definition of "Truthiness:" If scientifically valid research produces a conclusion you dislike, simply contradict it. No facts or evidence required, just your gut.
- Smokeydabear, on 06/02/2009, -8/+34A person who majored in poly sci is like a mule with a spinning wheel. You don't know how he got it and damned if he knows how to use it. You're the one who thinks that he has a leg up on everyone because he has a certain major. I know it's a comedy show, you douche, I watch it about four times a year. I just can't believe that people – conservative or otherwise – think that the man is serious, and it is not a comedy show. I mean it's on ***** COMEDY CENTRAL for Christ's sake. BTW how's managing McDonalds treating you?
- McNerd, on 06/02/2009, -1/+25Nah, if you read the article the writer expresses admiration for what he did. I think she just doesn't know what "gaffe" means; she thinks it means "stunt" or "hijink" or something.
- otbeverly, on 06/02/2009, -5/+29For the love of God, NO!
I DO NOT want Republicans associated with Libertarian because it will eventually mean Libertarian will become the new "buzzword" for Republicans. I promised myself I wouldn't be active in the Party again (because Libertarian Party meetings are full of ideas and discussion; but short on action ... plus the state government marginalized all third parties in Alabama, making it time and resource-consuming just to get on a ballot). But if I do begin to see some association I swear I'll volunteer to help the Party re-brand and disassociate itself from the Republican Party.
Remember this: Both the Republican Party and Democrat Party benefit from a consumed Libertarian Party. If you hear Democrats using the same word when referring to their opponents, it's probably because they realize the benefit of associating the word Libertarian with Republican Party in order to kill off the Libertarian Party. Anyone who uses the term without qualification should be called out on it. - TheMahdi, on 06/02/2009, -0/+24hahaha, no....
- rayen99, on 06/02/2009, -3/+26The guy's lucky... How many people have a full time job as a troll? Let alone trolling nationwide TV.
- treehugger87, on 06/02/2009, -1/+23I don't think conservatives are dumb. I think that those who call themselves conservatives after spending their day nodding in agreement with Fox news propagandists are extremely misinformed. True conservatives tend to be educated, smart & thoughtful, but you won't find any of them watching Fox news or listening to Limbaugh and his ilk.
- McNerd, on 06/02/2009, -7/+29Do you actually believe "tolerance" is about staying silent while people continue in demonstrably untrue beliefs? He's doing those people a favor, saving them from their idiocy. The accompanying schadenfreude is just a bonus, unrelated to the moral character of the act.
- dehn, on 06/02/2009, -6/+27My grandpa is a huge conservative and i asked him the other day if he liked watching colbert. He said yes except hes on at the same time as O'reilly and he likes bill better. I wanted to break out laughing.
- masterkenobi, on 06/02/2009, -0/+20You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
- twiztidsinz, on 06/02/2009, -14/+34I find it hard to believe you majored in ANYTHING given your total lack of capitalization, proper or otherwise.
- mentallyinhell, on 06/02/2009, -20/+39Its always fun to meet the people who believe he's on their side. And then tear them down.
- wretcheddawn, on 06/02/2009, -4/+22I'm a conservative and I know he's joking. He's also hilarious!
- charlie6969, on 06/01/2009, -23/+41I just wish my dad would watch him. Bet he would be fooled.lol
