- profgiles, on 04/27/2009, -26/+1204And that's the biggest joke of all.
- Echota, on 04/27/2009, -15/+572FTA:
I think a lot of conservatives are going to pissed when they realize that Stephen Colbert's performance at the 2006 White House Correspondents' Dinner was not, in fact, an awkward and ineffective attempt to praise President George W. Bush, but actually a bitter and satiric criticism of his incompetence!
Now that is damn funny! - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -41/+511what do you expect from people who think the earth is 6000 years old ?
Sadly enough i am Not joking. - McNash, on 04/27/2009, -65/+426And that ladies and gentle men, is how you troll.
- c010rb1indusa, on 04/28/2009, -36/+386Conservatives don't understand a lot of things
- booksnmore4you, on 04/27/2009, -20/+342It's that black/white good/evil right/left librul/conservative us/them literalistic worldview. It eclipses out anything like ambiguity, nuance, satire, and the like.
- thelastcivilian, on 04/28/2009, -13/+239I love comedians like Colbert. O'Reilly and Glenn Beck are two of my other favorites.
- enantiodromia, on 04/28/2009, -24/+222Conservatives stopped understanding metaphor about 2,000 years ago, when they confused it with 'reality'.
- ZachsMind, on 04/28/2009, -5/+187Echota: "I think a lot of conservatives are going to pissed when they realize..."
Uhm... If they haven't figured it out by now, they're not gonna. Colbert could burn Rush Limbaugh in effigy and these people wouldn't get it. Colbert's a silver-tongued devil. I love that righteous bastard! - Firstdaughter, on 04/28/2009, -35/+212
Conservatives seem to be lacking the genes responsible for humor which I suspect are closely mapped to those of intelligence. - baldbomber, on 04/28/2009, -17/+170I love labeling people! Conservatives, liberals, letists, right-wing nutjobs! So much fun! This way we don't have to go all the trouble of actually discussing any issues. We can just dismiss people with a label and feel good about ourselves. Hurray for critical thinking and reality!!
- sammryder, on 04/28/2009, -13/+161Stewart and Colbert are both genius at what they do. Their shows are on comedy central, so if people don't understand that its supposed to be satire, there's no helping them.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -7/+146Yeah I know a guy who frequently tells me he agrees with Colbert, I tried explaining that it's all a joke, to no avail.
- mu0p, on 04/27/2009, -12/+136I assumed as much...but you'd think with the audience cracking up every few seconds they'd be smart enough to catch on. Guess not.
- BrownieMix, on 04/28/2009, -10/+120Stewart is the serious one.
- RansomHoldiay, on 04/28/2009, -17/+91study: less educated are less educated
- Lefts, on 04/28/2009, -2/+71He still uses the same satirical and sarcastic humor.
The thing is, the entire Colbert character is sarcastic. Stewart drops it to say "WTF" or whatever, Colbert usually doesn't. - novenator, on 04/28/2009, -7/+73This is why he should have forked out the $50 grand to run in the GOP primary in South Carolina last year. It would have been hilarious to see how many voted for him, thinking he was the 'real conservative' candidate.
- kurttrail, on 04/28/2009, -0/+59Liberalism - A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans and the autonomy of the individual and favoring civil and political liberties, government by law with the consent of the governed, and protection from arbitrary authority.
So why do you think that the political philosophy of our Founding Fathers is the "biggest joke ever?"
What are you, if not a liberal?
A fascist, a monarchist, a theocrat, an oligarchist, a communist, a socialist, or an anarchist? - u8myfoood, on 04/28/2009, -8/+65Prove the world is older than 6000 years old!
I have the bible, it has detailed records of approximate dates of deaths of biblical figures what do you have to prove that wrong?
/s - kurttrail, on 04/28/2009, -9/+60LOL! Us liberals have a great sense of humor.
I laugh at idiots like you all day long.
But the real funny part is that until the rise of rabid conservatism, I had stopped voting, because I didn't see much difference between Republicans and Democrats. Boy, did Bush and his crew make a joke out of that belief!
So how many more people are ya'll gonna politically energize against Conservatism? - u8myfoood, on 04/28/2009, -3/+53*WHOOSH*

- kurttrail, on 04/28/2009, -0/+48You do realize that it was an Ohio State University study that HuffPo was reporting, or are you just stupid?
- phike, on 04/28/2009, -3/+51Hmmm.... maybe O'Reilly and Beck are comedians, and their shows are actually a comedy where only republicans get the jokes, and we are the oblivious ones..............
- TheWriteGuy, on 04/28/2009, -19/+66Many conservatives I've personally known seem unable to comprehend/parse irony. Seriously. (Wasn't there a recent scientific article that delved into this, which explored how many people's brains seem to react differently to, or were not able to recognize, irony or sarcasm?)
Most conservatives' reaction towards Colbert may be similar to that of South Park's Kayne West character is to the "you like fish sticks, so you're a gay fish" joke. - RagManX, on 04/28/2009, -10/+57I find this so funny because it's only been a few weeks since the last time my wife and I discussed the idea that someone needed to poll conservatives and see how many believe Colbert is serious rather than satire. I had a suspicion that most non-liberal viewers would watch while saying "Hell yes! This man is exactly right." rather than understanding the mocking he is doing. I so love this story.
- acephreak, on 04/28/2009, -7/+54That's exactly why they booked him for the White House Correspondent's Dinner in 2006. Also, check out his IMDB page. People are actually debating if he is a conservative for real. Conservatives sometimes fail at humor, apparently. Anyone remember that ***** show Fox tried to pull off as an alternative to John Stewart? Probably not.
- jsebrech, on 04/28/2009, -0/+45There's a video floating around somewhere of an interview with the chief scientist of the creation museum. She's a cellullar biologist, obviously a very intelligent woman, but her viewpoint was pretty much what you describe. "The bible is the undeniable truth, so everything else has to be reviewed in a way so that it corresponds to it." The reality is that these are people that are incapable of debating the factual accuracy of the bible because for them the fundamental truth of it is an article of faith. Abandoning that truth means abandoning their own identity as a faithful person.
It's sort of depressing because you know that even if aliens landed tomorrow and said "well, you know, our race has documented evidence of being around 200.000 years", these guys would go "that's just not possible, you must be mistaken."
For all the talk about reason and debate, very few people change their mind about anything fundamental past the age of 25 or so. The mind gets set in its ways, and whatever viewpoints you got from your parents and community, that's what you're stuck with. - ZachsMind, on 04/28/2009, -7/+51I recently fell for this guy's schtick. http://www.youtube.com/user/Jesusophile I strongly recommend checking him out if you like your satire very dry. ...At least, I *think* he's kidding. Maybe he IS legit..? Well I wouldn't wanna ruin it for you. I'll let you decide for yourself.
Before you pass judgment, I recommend at least watching the one with the banana. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMwuRVY_qaQ - Shiftgood, on 04/28/2009, -11/+55Yeah it really is the biggest joke of all.
.. but why does it make me want to cry? - mithrasinvictus, on 04/28/2009, -3/+46And facts and numbers and common sense.

- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -1/+41The Huffington Post was simply summarizing a study. For those interested, the abstract of the study can be found here:
http://hij.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/14/2/2 ...
The study, titled "The Irony of Satire", was undertaken by researchers at Ohio State University.
Not that I expect you to change your mind, you'll probably just resort to name calling. - Lisa136, on 04/28/2009, -2/+42From Wiki:
Although by his own account he was not particularly political before joining the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert is a self-described Democrat.[70][71]
In an interview at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Institute of Politics, he stated that he has "no problems with Republicans, just Republican policies." - Cyclist110, on 04/28/2009, -8/+48I've never heard Rush Limbaugh laugh, he just seems angry all the time.
- jmwood42, on 04/28/2009, -9/+48that line is sometimes called Fox. Which side of it are you on?
- Altair27, on 04/28/2009, -12/+50Indeed it is the biggest joke of all. Just like I recently realized why Carlos Mencia is funny: by stealing other people's jokes, he is intentionally referencing the stereotype that Mexicans steal things (even though he isn't really mexican). In his case, the biggest joke of all is his career itself, and once you get it it's HILARIOUS.
so... yea... guess that was only kinda related. - WorldLeader, on 04/28/2009, -1/+39Pianist.
- vonbrachner, on 04/28/2009, -10/+48It sadly reminds me of how children view the world (children often can't understand sarcasm and satire).
- morandir, on 04/28/2009, -1/+37<-- Conservative.
I know he's joking. I also think he's a very funny man. The ability to laugh at oneself is a necessity for a full life.
Just sayin'. - kyleaune, on 04/28/2009, -4/+40It's a university study made popular by Huffington Post. Find yourself a 4 year education.
- emailowndme, on 04/28/2009, -15/+50Hmm..Conservatives don't get the joke, color me suprised...
Glen Beck does the Colbert Show script and presents it as news... - u8myfoood, on 04/28/2009, -2/+36WHAT? WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THIS?
How dare Colbert bash Bush, he protected us from the terrorists and helped boost the economy to a new level never seen before. Best of all he believes in Christ unlike Obama who we all know is secretly a Muslim terrorist!
/s - andytronic, on 04/28/2009, -1/+35Not Constantinople.

- takamalak, on 04/28/2009, -2/+35Liberals have a great, long-suffering sense of humor. We sat through that joke of a presidency for 8 years just to get the punch-line on Nov 4.
- bobbi21, on 04/28/2009, -0/+33Colbert and even Stewart mock whoever is in power and whoever is most easily mockable. If they're on the left or right it doesn't matter much. While they are obviously left leaning, they've always been willing to mock them when they did something stupid.
- Groucho88, on 04/28/2009, -0/+32Nihilist.
