- diggeradoo, on 04/05/2008, -19/+214Released at 4pm on a Friday. Usually a sign that the news item needs to be buried in the slow weekend news cycle, so that it can be "old news" by the time Monday rolls around. Clinton wouldn't do anything like that, would she?
- NameTry2468, on 04/05/2008, -3/+118Hmm...I don't see why this would be bad news. I mean, as an Obama supporter, I've been salivating for these to be released, but everything on their tax returns seems to show income gained through honest means (even if it is an exorbitant amount of income). They paid tons of taxes, gave a lot to charity...I don't see why they took so long to release something so benign.
- HeDiggMe, on 04/05/2008, -6/+111I need to marry Chelsea now.
- Chompy, on 04/05/2008, -5/+99Who gives a *****? Bill gets six figures just for speaking; what, is he supposed to refuse the money? I'm voting for Obama, and I think there is plenty to criticize Clinton for, but being rich isn't one of them.
- thezettabytes, on 04/05/2008, -11/+67It ruins the persona that Hillary has been putting forward of connecting with poor blue collar workers.
- ServAce85, on 04/05/2008, -23/+74It's good to see that they really know what it means to be a "typical American family."
**barf - catachip, on 04/05/2008, -0/+45Average senator salary is $170,000 per year. You can't even get into Federal politics without earning 5-6 times the wage of the average American. It's a non-argument.
- Rodman930, on 04/05/2008, -6/+44It's over 9,000,000!!!
- sljepi, on 04/05/2008, -2/+37In another news, politicians make a lot of money.
- inactive, on 04/05/2008, -5/+39Like Obama, and his $400,000, right? That's about minimum wage.
- Renian, on 04/05/2008, -5/+39After seeing "President Clinton's Presidential Pension" on there, I just realized something.
This means Bush will get a pension.
Eff that, I don't want Bush taking my tax dollars and providing himself with a permanent income due to a job he did ineptly. - MiltonWaddams, on 04/05/2008, -4/+36Ya, because she should have to talk about her dad's hummers in public.
- Chestnutridge, on 04/05/2008, -0/+28The interesting thing here is that we finally see what an ex-President makes these days. Since neither Nancy Reagan or Barbara Bush ran for President, we never got to see how much their husbands were making. We knew Reagan was making a killing on speech making but we never got to see the totals. Obviously, it is good to be an ex-President.
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 04/05/2008, -8/+35In 2005, the Clintons had $5 million of income form Yucaipa Global holdings and $2.6 million in 2006. UH OH!
- frogman54, on 04/05/2008, -2/+24That's about what I make, minus 109 million or so.
- DarkShroud, on 04/05/2008, -2/+24The Clinton's didn't have money when Bill got into office. They weren't born rich, they became rich. I don't like them and I'd never vote for them. But I see no problem with people earning money legally as long as they pay their taxes on it.
- HanSolo69, on 04/05/2008, -0/+22Yea, but this one is more accurate because it doesn't saying "BREAKING!!111!1111!!"
- TheSwashbuckler, on 04/05/2008, -3/+24One does not need to be poor to connect with the poor - unless you think Obama can't connect with whites because he isn't white...
- ragar01, on 04/05/2008, -4/+24Wow, that's a lot of zero's.
- actorboy, on 04/05/2008, -7/+25The problem is that they did not release their 2007 return, which means we have no idea where their income has been from during her campaign. Special interest groups?
- whorunbartertwn, on 04/05/2008, -3/+20He's a former president, and a well-spoken one. His speeches are worth what the market will bear. I'm an Obama supporter but being critical of the man for earning as much as he can is absurd. Someone in Laos would find it absurd that people in America will pay $80 for a 1/2 hour massage.
- pakakapa, on 04/05/2008, -0/+17that makes me wonder who'd actually pay to hear Bush talk
- catachip, on 04/05/2008, -1/+15Damn... hopefully people are smart enough to see that I meant .... which is much MORE than the average of that income level...
- biotch, on 04/05/2008, -0/+13Its actually not as exorbitant as they make it seem. The after tax income after charity donations deducted was an averaged 3.3 mil each per year... Im not saying thats not a lot of money ... Im just saying they sure made it sound like its a lot more than it actually is.
FTA:
AFTER TAX EARNINGS: $57,157,297
CUMULATIVE TOTAL(GROSS) INCOME: $109,175,175
Including, among other items:
Senator Clinton's Senate Salary: $1,051,606
President Clinton's Presidential Pension: $1,217,250
Senator Clinton's Book Income: $10,457,083
President Clinton's Book Income: $29,580,525
President Clinton's Speech Income: $51,855,599 - catachip, on 04/05/2008, -1/+14Your incoherent post with random capitals and ranting demeanor make it impossible for anyone to take you seriously. Calm down, collect your thoughts, and post again. Right now, you're just looking like a jackass.
- catachip, on 04/05/2008, -3/+15The real interesting thing here, that no one is talking about, is the fact that she has paid 31% in taxes over the last 7 years, which is much less than the average for people of that income level, which is around 21%. So, it looks like the Clintons have been paying "full fare" since leaving office, not taking any exemptions or loop holes.
I support Obama, but, this is commendable: people like them, who have the means, are paying more than their fair share. - mal1964, on 04/05/2008, -3/+15Cool 10% to charities that's right on!
- alarchy, on 04/05/2008, -3/+14Finally. 51+ Million for speeches...I need to start paying the bum on State Street more to keep him competitive.
- simonbp, on 04/05/2008, -1/+12Wow, that is a lot of money they made for Bill's speeches. I may have chosen the wrong career path...
- loganhuddleston, on 04/05/2008, -1/+11most presidents are.
- invinciblenow, on 04/05/2008, -1/+11Amen, and it's not like they inhereited it, they actually earned it.
- catachip, on 04/05/2008, -2/+12These are cumulative totals. Average salary for a senator is about $170,000 per year. She's been a senator for 7 years, so, 7 x $170,000 = $1.2 million. She's actually below average for salary. Nothing unusual.
- actorboy, on 04/05/2008, -2/+12Wait, I thought words weren't worth anything.
- ZHEStorm, on 04/05/2008, -4/+13You realize they earned that income? They were not born into richness.
- redcolumbine, on 04/05/2008, -10/+19Yep, these are folks who understand the needs and priorities of the wage-earning majority, and care about keeping America working. Hillary understands about working late. Anybody wanna buy a bridge?
- mikeas, on 04/05/2008, -3/+11You would think someone that pays that much in taxes would realize big government is a waste.
- brandonchicago, on 04/05/2008, -1/+9Goddamn! That buys a lot of cigars!
- ralphodog, on 04/05/2008, -2/+107 years of income, but I wouldn't expect most people to pick that up as the title is deliberating made to be a slight bit misleading.
- ZHEStorm, on 04/05/2008, -6/+14Obama has not released his 2007 returns. Nor any return prior to 2000. So what about his special interest groups? Rezko? etc....
You realize there are now 27 years worth of Clinton tax returns in the public domain and only 7 by Obama? None of the 3 candidates currently have their 2007 returns in the public domain. So next time, do yourself a favor and do some research so you don't look like such an idiot next time. - muchachoburacho, on 04/05/2008, -2/+10Was that a real statement? Do we really need to digest the last 30 years of his taxes. This wouldn't have even been a big deal if she had released hers with everyone elses.
- mal1964, on 04/05/2008, -0/+8Their are people that make 20,000 or any amount a year and give 10% to church or charities
- invinciblenow, on 04/05/2008, -1/+8Considering most senators/congressman have 3-7 years more education than the average american, I don't argue with their pay, they earned it.
- test5477, on 04/05/2008, -0/+7so what, they are rich and so are most politicians in the US. Its the American way.
- emjaymj, on 04/05/2008, -1/+8$80? Only with happy ending
- Manchowder, on 04/05/2008, -1/+8Chelsea has been looking good.
- catachip, on 04/05/2008, -1/+7Read much?
I corrected myself in the first comment response. I was going to write that others have paid much LESS taxes, then as I started writing thought I might say that she has paid much MORE. In the end the two got messed up.
Thanks though. - LordVance, on 04/05/2008, -1/+7Theres a world of difference between not wanting Americans to have health care, and not wanting Americans to have government run or controlled health care. Personally - I definitely think that the HCSystem in the states is in serious need of government intervention - just saying, the small difference in wording means a huge difference in position.
- daviangel, on 04/05/2008, -0/+6You can blame Truman and Grant since they both came close to living with the bums on the streets after leaving the WH-LOL!
In 1958, Congress passed the Former Presidents Act, offering a $25,000 yearly pension to each former president, and it is likely that Truman's financial status played a role in the law's enactment. The one other living former president at the time, Herbert Hoover, also took the pension, even though he did not need the money; reportedly, he did so to avoid embarrassing Truman.[139] Hoover may have been remembering an old favor: Shortly after becoming President, Truman had invited Hoover to the White House for an informal chat about conditions in Europe. This was Hoover's first visit to the White House since leaving office, as the Roosevelt administration had shunned Hoover.[140] - olddirtycr, on 04/05/2008, -1/+7I'm not running for president.
- Sizzor, on 04/05/2008, -7/+13So why can't she pay her bills?
